STRAIGHT INTO THE CORNER Di Vittoria Coen …È la coscienza del tempo che determina l’espressione d’arte la quale, a sua volta, riflette la coscienza del tempo”.

Piet Mondrian scrive così sul primo numero di De Stijl, dichiarando la propria tesi sull’arte che, attraverso principi logici, razionali, esprima la chiarezza di uno stile. Una risposta netta al Movimento Dada che contestava la tecnologia e il positivismo della civiltà industriale.

Per Matteo Negri la “realizzazione delle sue sculture murali si ispira all’idea di ordine visivo e volumetrico rivolto in principio alle opere di Mondrian”.

Torna subito in mente il periodo di New York di Mondrian. In opere come New York City (1942), Broadway Boogie-Woogie (1942-43) vengono a moltiplicarsi i piani nello spazio che pare aprirsi, dove l’arte viene travolta dalla vita spostando il punto di vista dalla immobilità al movimento. In questo senso troviamo, dunque, evidenti analogie con lo studio del colore, della forma, e della percezione dello spazio

nel lavoro di Negri che, con il suo Lego macroscopico, gioca la carta dei pieni e dei vuoti, dei ponti e delle fughe nei contrappunti cromatici con colori primari e secondari, come in una ipotetica partitura di Bach.

Nella modulazione dei tasselli, nell’articolazione della singola opera, individuiamo una visone prospettica, di sapore architettonico-urbanistico, che sfocia successivamente in quelli che Negri definisce Kamigami, sculture – installazioni che si proiettano all’infinito con l’ausilio di pareti riflettenti in acciaio o specchio.

Come lui stesso scrive, “da qui nasce la mostra Straight into the corner”, che per lui significa proprio “concentrarsi sullo spigolo, l’angolo che origina altre visioni, dove apparentemente finisce tutto, inizia un nuovo spazio”.

Dai lavori legati agli esordi come i rottami industriali trasformati e ricomposti con un curioso effetto biomorfico alle mine di profondità esplose, realizzate in ceramica, dai colori vivaci su cui la critica si è molto spesa (oggetti di morte vivacizzati ludicamente dal

colore) la cui forma, per l’artista, costituisce un fascino particolare, quasi misterioso, fino ai giganteschi nodi colorati (per esempio At the End of the Day) esposti in vari luoghi a Genova in una importante mostra, tesi a creare un rapporto immediato di relazione ed interazione col pubblico, il più vasto possibile, di esperti e di curiosi occasionali, compresi i bambini che Negri considera i suoi migliori collezionisti potenziali; tutte le sue opere sono meticolosamente studiate e perfezionate.

Nei nodi Negri sviluppa decisamente il suo rapporto con l’architettura. La resina e il ferro laccato sono il frutto di una iniziale torsione (che nasce da una lavorazione dei mattoncini in cera) e che diventa la metafora del “centro”.

Nell’uso della forma del Lego, che diventa L’Ego, l’artista sostiene di aver trovato un suo “alfabeto”, un linguaggio personale, dettato anche dal fatto che questi moduli danno in sé l’idea di costruzione, di articolazione. Torna alla memoria il lavoro intitolato The Source Code, del 2012, una struttura in resina e ferro laccati che ricorda un grande DNA, un elicoide fatto di aggregazione e intreccio di elementi – molecole in cui l’artista costruisce un nuovo orizzonte mentale. Come lui stesso dichiara in una intervista: “….Il DNA mostra che anche la vita ha a che fare con il design. E’ un’architettura. E’ una costruzione, una creazione. Il codice genetico è un vocabolario con cui la vita

parla la sua lingua”.

Un’altra opera, di un anno prima, Big Landscape, una stampa lambda su carta fotografica Epson e plexiglass, appare ai nostri occhi come una moderna still life in uno spazio che pare sospeso.

Mine esplose su tavolo da biliardo.

Lo spazio, dunque, l’ambiente urbano, ma anche le geografie possibili della serie di L’Ego mappe che rappresentano la felice ricostruzione dei continenti evidenziate da colori forti e giocosi, sono i luoghi della idealità dell’artista, che continua a sperimentare, con l’occhio sempre attento alla anatomia della forma.

La prima opera che ci fa entrare nel percorso espositivo è un Kamigami di grandi dimensioni posto a parete e intitolato Z – to – A rappresenta un’ulteriore evoluzione rispetto ai più noti Kamigami Boxes, in cui si modula la prospettiva del piano grazie alle pareti riflettenti, anche se, in questo caso, si tratta di un piano forato che dà vita a suggestioni di fughe prospettiche.

Incontriamo successivamente i suoi Flatstep in ferro laccato e cromato, i L’Ego Mondrian e dieci straordinari lavori intitolati PSA (letteralmente Pittura Su Alluminio) Straight into 1, 2, 3…..ciascuno di cm. 100 x 80, un chiaro invito a penetrare uno spazio architettonico urbano. In totale, quasi trenta lavori di varie dimensioni e tecniche che esprimono la totale libertà dell’artista di giocare con gli strumenti che ritiene

più funzionali al suo progetto culturale.

Sì, perché questo suo citare l’arte, l’architettura, il design, è sinonimo di cultura del progetto.

Anche nella bella mostra a Casa Testori, che abbiamo visitato recentemente, appariva chiaro questo intento. Vestiti come una vespa, un lavoro di quest’anno, è costituito da fusione in bronzo a cera persa, ad esempio, ma con una carenatura che permette alla scultura di “piroettare”, e poi le lettere disseminate in una grande sfera a comporre parole che invitano alla riflessione, o Aleppo, in acciaio, resina poliestere, cromo liquido, colore per vetro, che pende dal soffitto animata da un motore elettrico, come un monito a porre l’attenzione sui fatti di sangue della nostra contemporaneità.

Quello che colpisce in questa ricchezza di proposte, di idee compiute, è la perfezione stilistica, la rifinitura del lavoro, tecnicamente sempre ineccepibile, caratteristica, questa, più vicina alla “scuola” anglosassone che a quella nostrana. La pittura prospettica e la scultura a parete giocano sui pieni e i vuoti, su leggerezza e concretezza, spiazzando volutamente lo sguardo dell’osservatore. Le margherite di Jeff Koons, di vetro, fatte fare a Venezia sembravano di plastica, poiché erano il risultato di un certo tipo di cultura Pop, i L’Ego Mondrian di Negri sono le sublimazioni di un’idea di materiale solo apparentemente accessibile a tutti. Un’o-

perazione decisamente concettuale.

Come un moderno alchimista Matteo Negri, dunque, costruisce allegorie contemporanee sul solco della tradizione rinascimentale italiana, ma anche con uno sguardo sempre aperto sul mondo e le sue “bio-diversità”.

STRAIGHT INTO THE CORNER von Vittoria Coen …Es ist das Zeitbewusstsein, das den Ausdruck in der Kunst bestimmt, der seinerseits das Zeitbewusstsein widerspiegelt.“ Mit diesen Worten legt Piet Mondrian in der ersten Ausgabe der Zeitschrift De Stijl seine Auffassung von Kunst dar: Kunst muss auf der Grundlage logischer und rationaler Prinzipien die Klarheit eines Stils sichern. Damit erteilt Mondrian dem Dadaismus eine klare Absage, welcher die Technologien und den Positivismus des industriellen Zeitalters ablehnt.

Matteo Negri wird bei der Fertigung seiner Wandskulpturen von der Vorstellung visueller und räumlicher Ordnung inspiriert und folgt damit dem Prinzip der Werke Mondrians.

Vor dem geistigen Auge werden sofort die Bilder aus Mondrians New Yorker Zeit wach. In Werken wie New York City (1942) oder Broadway Boogie-Woogie (1942-43) vervielfältigen sich die Ebenen im Raum, dieser scheint sich zu öffnen, die Kunst wird vom Leben überrollt

und der Betrachter sieht nicht Starrheit sondern Bewegung. Ähnliche Ansätze finden sich in den Werken Negris, der durch das Studium von Farbe, Form und Wahrnehmung des Raums mit seinem riesigen Lego auf das Spiel von Leere und Fülle, von Brücken und Fluchtpunkten in den farblichen Kontrapunkten mit Primär- und Sekundärfarben setzt, wie in einer hypothetischen Partitur Bachs.

Die Modulation der Kleinteile, die Artikulation der einzelnen Werke lassen eine perspektivische Vision erahnen, die architektonisch-urbanen Charakter hat und schließlich in Negris Kamigami mündet, skulpturalen Installationen, die mithilfe reflektierender Stahlwände oder Spiegel in die Unendlichkeit projiziert werden.

Er selbst schreibt dazu: „Dies ist die Geburtsstunde der Ausstellung Straight into the corner“, was für ihn so viel bedeutet wie „die Konzentration auf die Kante, die Ecke, die neue Visionen eröffnet; dort, wo scheinbar alles endet, beginnt neuer Raum“.

Von seinen ersten Werken, wie jenen, für die er Industrieabfälle zu biomor-

phen Skulpturen umgearbeitet hat, über die explodierten Seeminen aus Keramik, die als todbringende Objekte durch ihre leuchtenden Farben eine spielerische Note erhalten und dafür viel Kritik bekommen haben, deren Form für den Künstler aber von ganz besonderem, geradezu magischem Reiz ist, bis zu den riesigen farbigen Knoten, z.B. At the End of the Day, bei einer bedeutenden Ausstellung in Genua an verschiedenen Orten ausgestellt und in besonderer Weise dazu gedacht, einen unmittelbaren Bezug zum und Interaktion mit dem Publikum herzustellen, um mit so vielen Menschen wie möglich in Kontakt zu treten, mit Fachleuten und Schaulustigen, vor allem auch mit Kindern, die Negri als seine besten potenziellen Sammler sieht – alle seine Werke sind das Ergebnis von minutiösem Studium und dem Streben nach Perfektion.

In den Knoten zeigt Negri entschlossen sein Verhältnis zur Architektur auf.

Harz und lackiertes Eisen sind das Ergebnis einer anfänglichen Verdrehung – entstanden aus der Bearbeitung der Klötzchen aus Wachs – welche die Metapher für die „Mitte“ wird. Durch die Verwendung der Legoform, die zu L’Ego (italienisch für ‚das Ego‘) wird, hat der Künstler sein eigenes Alphabet gefunden, eine persönliche Sprache, die auch dadurch bedingt ist, dass diesen Bausteinen an und für sich bereits die Vorstellung von Konstruktion, Artikulation inhärent ist. Denken wir etwa an

sein Werk The Source Code aus dem Jahr 2012, eine Struktur aus lackiertem Harz und Eisen, die an eine große DNA erinnert, eine Spirale, die aus einer Anhäufung ineinandergreifender Molekülelemente besteht, mit der der Künstler einen neuen mentalen Horizont schafft.

Wie er selbst in einem Interview erklärt „… zeigt die DNA, dass auch das Leben mit Design zu tun hat. Es ist Architektur.

Es ist Konstruktion, Kreation. Der genetische Kode ist das Vokabular der Sprache des Lebens.”

Ein anderes Werk, Big Landscape, 2011, ein Lambdadruck auf Epson Fotopapier und Plexiglas, erscheint uns wie ein modernes Stillleben in einem scheinbar unbewegten Raum: explodierte Minen auf Billardtisch.

Der Raum, das städtische Umfeld, aber auch die möglichen Geographien der Reihe L’Ego mappe, fröhliche, durch kräftige und heitere Farben gekennzeichnete Abbildungen der Kontinente, sind die Idealorte des Künstlers, der weiterhin experimentiert, dabei aber stets auf die Anatomie der Form bedacht ist.

Das erste Werk, auf das wir auf unserem Rundgang durch die Ausstellung treffen, ist ein großformatiges Wand-Kamigami mit dem Titel Z – to – A, eine Weiterentwicklung der bekannteren Kamigami boxes, in denen die Perspektive der Ebene durch reflektierende Wände verändert wird, auch wenn es sich in diesem Fall um eine Lochplatte handelt,

die den Eindruck von perspektivischen Fluchtpunkten entstehen lässt.

Daran anschließend finden sich Flatstep in lackiertem und verchromtem Eisen, L’Ego Mondrian und zehn ganz außerordentliche Werke mit dem Titel PSA (Pittura su Alluminio – Malerei auf Aluminium) Straight into 1, 2, 3… jeweils 100 x 80 cm, die zum Eintauchen in einen architektonisch-urbanen Raum einladen.

Insgesamt umfasst die Ausstellung beinahe dreißig Arbeiten unterschiedlichen Formats und verschiedenster Techniken, die Ausdruck sind für die völlige Freiheit des Künstlers, sich spielerisch aller Werkzeuge zu bedienen, die seiner Meinung nach am geeignetsten sind, um sein kulturelles Projekt zu verwirklichen.

Denn seine Anleihen bei Kunst, Architektur und Design sind nichts anderes als ein kulturelles Projekt.

Auch in der wunderbaren Ausstellung in der Casa Testori, die wir kürzlich besucht haben, war diese Absicht ganz klar. Bei Vestiti come una vespa (Angezogen wie eine Vespa) etwa, einer Arbeit aus diesem Jahr, handelt es sich um eine Bronzeskulptur im Wachsausschmelzverfahren, doch eine Verkleidung ermöglicht es der Skulptur, ‚Pirouetten‘ zu drehen; und dann sind da die Buchstaben, die, in einer großen Kugel ausgestreut, Wörter bilden, die zum Nachdenken animieren; oder Aleppo, aus Stahl, Polyesterharz, flüssigem Chrom und Glasfarbe, das von der Decke hängt und von einem

Elektromotor bewegt wird, wie eine Mahnmal, um die Aufmerksamkeit auf die blutigen Auseinandersetzungen unserer Zeit zu richten.

Was an Negris Arbeiten, an seinen reichhaltigen Vorschlägen und vollendeten Ideen besonders besticht, ist die stilistische Perfektion, die Feinheit der Arbeit, die technische Brillanz, die in dieser Form eher der angelsächsischen denn unserer ‚Tradition‘ entspricht. Die perspektivische Malerei und die Wandskulpturen spielen mit dem leeren und dem vollen Raum, mit Leichtigkeit und Konkretem, und lenken dabei ganz bewusst das Auge des Betrachters in ungewohnte Richtungen. Jeff Koons ließ seine Margeriten aus Glas in Venedig fertigen, doch sie sahen aus wie Plastik, denn sie waren das Ergebnis einer bestimmten Art von Popkultur; die L’Ego Mondrian von Negri sind die Sublimierung der Idee eines Materials, das nur scheinbar allen zugänglich ist; ein in höchstem Maße begriffliches Werk.

Wie ein moderner Alchimist ersinnt Matteo Negri also zeitgenössische Allegorien in der Tradition der italienischen Renaissance, hat dabei aber stets auch die Welt und ihre „Bio-Diversität“ im Blick.

STRAIGHT INTO THE CORNER

by Vittoria Coen …It is the consciousness of time which determines the expression of art which in turn reflects the consciousness of time.”

This is how Piet Mondrian in the first edition of De Stijl declares his theory on art which according to him has to foster the clarity of stile on the basis of logical and rational principles. It is a clear rejection of the Dadaism movement which refuses to accept the technology and positivism of the industrial society.

When creating his murals, Matteo Negri is inspired by the idea of visual and volumetric order as it can also be found in the Mondrian’s works.

Immediately Mondrian’s New York period comes to mind. In art pieces like New York City (1942) and Broadway Boogie-Woogie (1942-43) the levels in space multiply and space itself seems to open up, art is swept away by life, moving the viewpoint from immobility to movement. Evident analogies can be found in Negri’s works: by study-

ing colours, forms and the perception of space in his giant Lego he focuses on the tension between full and empty spaces, bridges and vanishing points with primary and secondary colours, just like a hypothetical score by Bach.

The modulation of the small pieces, the articulation of the individual piece of art reveals a perspective fascinated by urban architecture which finally develops into what Negri defines as Kamigami, sculptural installations which are projected into infinity by means of reflecting walls in steel or mirrors.

As he himself writes, “this is where the Straight into the corner exhibition comes from”, which for him means “concentrating on the edge, on the corner which creates new visions; where apparently everything ends, new space opens up”.

Right from his early works, in which he transformed and recomposed industrial debris to create biomorphic sculptures, to the exploded underwater mines in ceramic, deadly objects held in bright colours, which give them an air of playfulness and which

have therefore been vividly discussed by critics, whose form is particularly fascinating, almost mysterious, for the artist, to the enormous coloured knots, e.g. At the End of the Day, displayed in various places in an important exhibition in Genoa aimed at creating an immediate rapport, relationship and interaction with the audience, with as many people as possible, with experts as well as with occasional visitors, including children who Negri considers to be his best potential collectors – all his pieces of art have been meticulously studied and perfected. In the knots Negri develops his relationship with architecture. Resin and lacquered iron emanate from an initial twist which derives from elaborating the bricks in wax and which becomes the metaphor of the “centre”. By using the form of Lego, which becomes L’Ego (Italian for ‘the Ego’), the artist has developed his own ‘alphabet’, his very personal language which is defined also by the fact that the modules themselves include the idea of construction, of articulation.

His piece of art The Source Code, 2012, comes to mind, a structure of resin and lacquered iron which reminds us of a giant DNA, a spiral consisting of interlacing molecule elements which the artist constructs a new mental horizon with. As he himself has put it in an interview: “…DNA shows that also life has to do with design. It is architecture. It is construction, creation. The genetic

code is the vocabulary of the language of life.”

Another piece of art was created one year earlier, Big Landscape. It is a lambda print on Epson photographic paper and plexiglass and seems to us like some modern still life in a space which seems suspended. Exploded mines on a pool table.

Space, urban environment, but also the possible geographies of the L’Ego mappe series, cheerful reconstructions of the continents in bright and playful colours, are the places idealized by the artist who keeps experimenting yet paying attention to the anatomy of form.

The first piece of art which we encounter on our walk through the exhibition is a large-size mural Kamigami with the title Z – to – A which further develops the better known Kamigami Boxes where the perspective of the surface is modulated by means of reflecting walls even though in this case it is a perforated panel which rather suggests vanishing points.

The ensuing pieces of art are Flatstep in lacquered and chrome-plated iron, L’Ego Mondrian and ten extraordinary works called PSA (literally Pittura su Alluminio – Painting on Aluminum) Straight into 1, 2, 3… 100 x 80 cm each, a clear invitation to get into architectural urban space. Altogether about thirty works of various size and techniques which display the complete

freedom of the artist to play with whatever tools he retains functional for his cultural project.

Yes, indeed, since his quotation of art, architecture, design is synonym of culture of the project.

This intention was also clearly visible in the wonderful exhibition in Casa Testori which we have visited recently.

Vestiti come una vespa (Dressed like a Vespa), a work of this year for example, is a lost-wax bronze cast, however, endowed with a fairing which allows the sculpture to ‘pirouette’, and then the letters scattered in a large sphere to make up words triggering off reflection, or Aleppo, made of steel, Polyester resin, liquid chrome and glass colour, hanging from the ceiling and moved by an electric engine, like a warning to pay attention to the bloody events of our times.

What is most striking about this abundance of proposals, of completed ideas, is Negri’s stylistic perfection, the finishing touch, the technical mastery which is typical rather of the Anglo-Saxon than the Italian tradition.

Perspective painting and mural sculpture focus on full and empty spaces, on lightness and concreteness, voluntarily directing the observer’s look into another direction. Jeff Koon’s marguerites of glass, he had them made in Venice, seemed to be plastic as they were the result of a certain type of pop culture; Negri’s L’Ego Mondrian subli-

mate the idea of a material which only seems to be accessible to everybody. A decisively conceptual operation.

Like a modern alchemist Matteo Negri constructs contemporary allegories in the tradition of Italian Renaissance.

However, he keeps his eyes open, scrutinizing the world and its ‘biodiversity’.
