A NOTE FROM LEADERSHIP Dear Friends, There is a saying we use often at Generations Incorporated; from kindergarten to third grade, students learn to read. After fourth grade, students read to learn. Literacy is the vehicle to other learning, yet far too many children in our country lack the fundamental literacy skills to learn. Generations Incorporated is committed to ending the youth literacy crisis within Greater Boston.

2018 marked the 20th anniversary of our partnership with AARP Foundation Experience Corps and Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston.

Both partners have been key to the continued development of our programs within Greater Boston. In 2018, we made many strides in addressing the youth literacy crisis. 281 community volunteers supported a total of 3,506 kindergarten through third grade students, with nearly 2,000 students participating in targeted one-to-one and small group literacy interventions over the course of the school year.

We were selected to participate in two independent third-party impact evaluations, and recognized by Boston and Revere public schools as a priority partner deeply impacting high-need schools.

On behalf of our students, our volunteers, Board of Directors, and our staff, we want to thank each of you for partnering with Generations Incorporated to further positive change in our community through your generous support. In the following pages, you will find evidence of our impact. Witnessing the unique and tested power of Generations Incorporated programming gives us confidence that we have something very special to offer the Greater Boston community.

While we celebrate the successes your support made possible, we have to keep pushing. Too many kids still do not have access to the resources and relationships they need to chart a better path forward.

YOUTH LITERACY CRISIS Percentage of 4th grade students NOT at grade level*

LITERACY IS THE KEY TO LIFELONG SUCCESS. Our Mission Generations Incorporated improves the literacy skills of young children through Grade 3 by engaging professionally trained older adult volunteers as literacy coaches in our partner schools and after-school programs. We serve communities where opportunity gaps exist to ensure all students have the resources to become literacy proficient.

Literacy coaches are paired with a Kindergarten to Grade 3 classroom for the school year. While in the classroom, coaches provide targeted small group literacy tutoring to students identified by the teacher as reading below grade level. Literacy coaches also reduce the child-to-adult ratio, support the delivery of early education curriculum, and increase the ability of the teacher to provide differentiated support to students during literacy instruction.

One-to-One Reading Coaches Struggling readers are carefully paired with a trained literacy coach. They meet twice each week for targeted literacy tutoring.

Reading Coaches activities are guided by the American Reading Company curriculum, and each 30-minute session is designed to improve phonemic awareness, vocabulary, phonics, fluency and comprehension.

STUDENT OUTCOMES IN 2018

IMPACT IN 2018 281 older adult literacy coaches provided 55,451 hours of tutoring Our volunteers’ commitment, training, life and professional experiences are essential ingredients to creating impactful intergenerational relationships that are mutually beneficial for both age groups.

3,506 total students served with 1,923 students receiving sustained weekly tutoring The focus is deeper than reading; we work to increase literacy skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Our model is aligned with district curricula and grade-level literacy instruction.

On average, students participating in sustained tutoring improve by 1.5 reading levels over the course of the school year

of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year improved their reading and literacy performance by at least half a grade.

Our results-driven literacy programs aim to accelerate literacy growth among struggling early readers while building important social-emotional skills and fostering a love of reading.

325 rising kindergarten through third grade students benefited from summer learning support In collaboration with Boston Public Schools and Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, our literacy coaches focused on minimizing summer learning loss for rising first through third graders and promoted kindergarten readiness for students entering school for the first time in the fall.

Through the Education Initiative, Liberty Mutual Foundation seeks to provide educational opportunity by empowering low-income youth to follow a successful educational path and by supporting learning opportunities that will allow them to reach their full potential.

Liberty Mutual Insurance’s commitment goes beyond the investment of philanthropic dollars to also contribute the time of Liberty Torchbearers, employees who provide community service within local non-profits through Serve with Liberty.

Generations Incorporated received its first grant from Liberty Mutual Foundation in 2004. Through our partnership, we have developed and expanded the Reading Coaches Program to engage over 6,000 struggling readers in one-to-one literacy interventions during school and after-school hours. We have also benefited from the incredible support of Liberty Mutual Insurance employees, who have helped us create and distribute engaging tutoring materials to support our high-quality literacy tutoring across Boston.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: LENORA HOLLEY Ten years ago, in her first year as a literacy coach at the Yawkey Boys and Girls Club of Roxbury, Lenora Holley worked with a thirdgrade boy who was struggling to keep up with his classmates.

The pair worked together week in and week out, practicing basic skills and re-reading texts twice each week for the entire school year.

Ms. Holley was there to listen, to laugh, to share her own experiences and provide words of resiliency and perseverance. By the end of the year, there was a noticeable change in the student’s confidence and motivation, and he ended his thirdgrade year reading at benchmark.

In April of 2018, a young man who was about to graduate from a Boston Public High School walked into the same reading room in the same Boys & Girls Club he attended as a child to ask his literacy coach from a decade ago, Ms. Holley, to be his own personal guest at his high school graduation.

“I love reading to the children. I don’t expect them to remember me but I remember them. It meant so much to me to know that he was still doing well,” said Ms. Holley.

2018 GENERATIONS INCORPORATED ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Supporters, Generations Incorporated ended fiscal year 2018 with a small deficit of $5,460 but has continued to increase net assets with multi-year grants and pledges. On June 30, 2018, the organization’s net assets totaled approximately $1.4 million, an increase of $298,039 over the previous year.

This fiscal year was a transition period for the organization.

Third Sector New England/ Mission Works facilitated a search for the new Executive Director, which was completed in October of 2017. The Board of Directors understood that there would be additional expenses associated with this search and has been successful in building a reserve fund for such purposes. The board unanimously voted to approve the transfer of board reserve funds to cover any financial shortfall. The Board of Directors plans to replenish the board reserve fund in the coming years.

Government funding was decreased in fiscal year 2018 due to a strategic decision to reduce the number of AmeriCorps members hosted at our organization. This reduction can be seen in our financials as a decrease in revenue as well as a decrease in expense for member stipends. The organization continues to successfully fundraise for private dollars to offer some volunteers a small stipend for their service.
