Our Mission‌. Generations Incorporated strives to improve the literacy skills of young children through Grade 3. We also provide meaningful opportunities to older adults who serve as literacy volunteers in our partner schools and after-school programs in low-income communities.

2

Dear friends, The 2015 fiscal year was a very important one. And I’d like to share some highlights with you. We just finished Year 2 of implementation of our 3- year Read to Succeed Strategic Plan and I am very pleased with our accomplishments. In 2015, 265 AARP Experience Corps volunteers served 3,199 children in Boston and Revere with newly designed and highly intentional literacy programs. We have transitioned program leadership to older adult volunteers. This shift makes our programs more stable and sustainable, as our volunteers are rooted in the community, and bring their experiences and local knowledge to light, day in and day out. Today, all 17 program locations now have a highly trained leader responsible for day to day program implementation. This strategy empowers residents to be leaders within their communities. We have successfully shifted to early literacy, both in school and in after-school settings. To meet this goal, we developed new training content that is in alignment with the curriculum of the Boston and Revere Public Schools and Common Core Standards. Prior to this shift, most of our work took place with children in second and third grades. Based on expert research, we believe we can make a stronger impact by starting earlier. The redesign also calls for “high dose sustained work” which will result in moving the literacy needle faster. We created better evaluation systems. We have new data sharing agreements with the Boston Public and Revere Public School Districts to measure progress in the school, and a new curriculum from the American Reading Company that has an evaluation to measure progress in after-school programs. We are now better able to evaluate and track our efforts. We have a new, more thorough nomination process for our Board of Directors. We have a goal of developing new Board members into leaders, and we believe that bringing diversity to the board can strengthen the organization. As a result, we elected 4 new board members who met our criteria, including women and persons of color. Harvey Salgo was elected as our new President at our annual meeting in June. We continue to build a reserve fund equal to three months of operating revenue. Two years ago we had no reserves and our cash flow was good for 6-8 weeks. We are half way there and our cash flow extends to 4 months. As an affiliate, we continue to lead the national AARP Experience Corps network in many ways. I was asked to join the Network Impact Council, which consists of 6 members from across the country, to serve as the sounding board for the larger network and to contribute to growth planning, affiliation standards, and program development. In May, AARP Experience Corps CEO, Lester Strong, spoke at our annual fundraising event, stating “Generations Incorporated is best in class, best in nation.” The purpose of Read to Succeed is to get better, not bigger. After two years, our programs are more replicable, impactful, and affordable. We began growth planning in July 2015, with a goal for expansion to two new communities by 2020. We also continue to grow in Boston and will partner with two new schools and two new afterschool programs this fall. We are truly grateful for your confidence in us. Your investment really matters and I hope we can count on it again. Sincerely,

3

Mary Gunn, Executive Director

reading coaches Reading Coaches Program engages trained literacy volunteers to provide structured one-to-one literacy support to kindergarten – 3rd grade students who are struggling with reading. This year, we partnered with the American Reading Company by adopting their proven and innovative literacy curriculum, which aligns with Common Core State Standards and provides us with new books and an evaluation system called Independent Reading Level Assessment. Each Reading Coaches session includes reading a story, working on comprehension and vocabulary, and a writing assignment. Classroom Literacy Program brings trained literacy volunteers into kindergarten – 3rd grade classrooms to work one-on-one or in small groups of children who need help improving their literacy skills. Volunteers help with interactive read-alouds, independent reading, writing, phonics, and skill support.

“Two students who never attended school were assigned to my group. They learned foundations quickly and know their sight words. Their behavior improved from when they started. They blend in well with the group and seek supervision when in doubt as to what to do. -Volunteer

Treasurer’s Statement Generations Incorporated experienced another robust year in fiscal 2015 and our financial condition also remains strong. Our surplus grew slightly from 2014, while our overall expenses and revenues were down 9% and 8% respectively. These reductions were expected and in response to Read to Succeed, our strategic plan. Primarily, this was due to the reduction of our AmeriCorps VISTA program, as we will no longer host VISTA members for outside organizations. The end of this program shows up in our financials as reductions in both government funding and earned revenues (as host organizations would pay us a fee to host one of our VISTAs) as well as a reduction in volunteer stipends. Other changes in 2015 included an increase in both foundation support and individuals as well as investments in our one- on-one program curriculum and our major giving program. We are happy to report that another surplus has enabled us to continue to grow our board designated reserve fund with a contribution of $50,000. With one remaining year in Read to Succeed, our finance committee will be reviewing our goals for the reserve fund to ensure that it is adequate to preserve our financial strength going forward. In addition, we are also happy to report improvements on our Balance Sheet. Our unrestricted net assets increased from $204 thousand to $295 thousand, or by 45%. This is a direct result of the growth of the Board Designated Fund. In closing, 2015 was a strong year, and we thank our supporters for your generous support as we move into the final year of Read to Succeed. Sincerely,

John A. McCullough, Board Treasurer

Teacher surveys “Our EC tutor has been a leading force behind getting our newcomers to speak and use the English language. She practices flashcards, plays alphabet bingo, and many other fun ways to improve letter recognition. One specific student in mind came into kindergarten with a DIBELS score of zero in letter naming and zero in first sound fluency. Because of his daily help from our EC tutor he is now able to identify all letter and their sounds.”

“All the students in my room wanted the EC tutor to assist them and not just the selected few. They wanted her four or five days. They always ask, ‘Is she coming today?’”

“I have had my EC tutor for now the fourth year in a row. She is truly amazing. One thing this year that I noticed is her way to engage the students in conversation. I have many identified and non-identified [English Language Learners] in the room. Conversation and English grammar are difficult for them but she never gives up on them speaking in full sentences. Bringing their experiences into conversation as a learning tool and with that also lets the students feel like they are important which improves conversation.”

“My EC tutor was very instrumental in working with a small group of children; their reading scores improved immensely.”

“In my classroom, our EC tutor works with a small group that all have an [Early Language Development] level of 1. She does some shared writing activities with them. Over the past couple of months they have begun to write more independently. A couple of weeks ago we were working on creating a dialogue. Two girls in her group were so excited. With the assistance of [the tutor] they created, wrote and shared their dialogue with their classmates. This was such a big moment for them as writers. This has helped build their confidence and excitement for learning the language and sharing what they have learned with their classmates.”
