Thank you for the warm welcome and support. Over the weeks I’ve learned a lot about what makes the Gemporia community so special, and I’m grateful to be part of it.
As you read this, our brand-new studio will be live! The team has put passion and creativity into every detail, and I’m excited for you to experience it with us. The timing could not be better as we’re about to celebrate Gemporia’s 21st birthday – a milestone made even more meaningful in an inspiring new space.
We have a memorable celebration planned, with wonderful guests joining to showcase the best of Gemporia. It’ll be a chance to look back on our journey, share stories, and highlight what makes our community unique. Please do join in and share your memories - I would love to hear them.

Gemporia was founded back in 2004, with the intention of offering high-quality, bespoke jewellery made from natural materials and affordable for everyone. A lot has happened in the last 21 years, and with your help, we’ve achieved so much!

STEVE’S MINERAL JOURNEY BEGINS
Steve Bennett was fascinated with geology at school and began collecting and learning about the Earth’s minerals. He later went on to found Gemporia in 2004.

Australia’s Saltwater Pearls
In the remote Australian waters, where the sea is still and the light runs deep, wild oysters quietly create something extraordinary.

Cursed Gemstones:
Legends of Misfortune

F or centuries, certain gemstones have carried reputations for bringing tragedy, loss, or misfortune to their owners – blurring the lines between superstition, history and eerie coincidence.
HOPE DIAMOND
The striking blue Hope Diamond is infamous for bringing scandal, ruin, and untimely death to many owners. From French royalty to wealthy Americans, misfortune seemed to follow its path. Now housed in the Smithsonian Institution, it remains a glittering reminder of the enduring allure of gemstone curses.
THE WITCH’S STONE
Opals gained an unlucky reputation after Sir Walter Scott’s 1829 novel Anne of Geierstein linked them to death. Earlier, they were associated with witches and the occult, believed to grant invisibility and enhance magical powers – connections that turned them into symbols of danger during periods of witchcraft hysteria.
THE CURSED AMETHYST
This deep violet Amethyst, misnamed a Sapphire, was looted from an Indian temple in the 1850s. Its owners faced bankruptcy, poor health, and misfortune, prompting one to lock it away with a warning note. Today, it sits in London’s Natural History Museum, still accompanied by tales of bad luck.
TEARS TURNED TO TREASURE
Long associated with tears, Pearls have featured in folklore as symbols of sadness and loss. Some legends claim their shape comes from the tears of gods or mythical creatures, while others believed wearing them would invite sorrow. This tearful imagery made them a poetic, if bittersweet, emblem in many cultures.
While science offers no proof of curses, these stories endure because they blend history, mystery, and beauty. For collectors and enthusiasts, they serve as a reminder that gemstones hold more than just physical sparkle –they carry centuries of legend, culture, and wonder.

Diamonds Aren’t Forever

With legendary Diamond mines closing and factory-made synthetics on the rise, it’s never been more crucial to call time on the assumption that Diamonds are ‘forever’ –because the fact is, they aren’t.
When Australia’s Argyle Mine closed in 2020, it was a farewell to the birthplace of more than 90% of the world’s natural pink Diamonds. This monumental closure came just five years after Australia’s Ellendale Diamond Field, famed for its canary yellows, also ceased operations.
Natural Diamonds carry stories of time, place, and human craftsmanship, and with each mine that closes, a vital chapter in the story ends. Our Diamonds Aren’t Forever message exists to honour these stories and confront a frightening truth: nature’s resources are precious, and their heritage cannot be replicated.
As one of the few jewellers committed solely to natural gemstones, we have a responsibility to preserve not just

the legacy of natural Diamonds, but the environments and communities behind them that make them even more special. As our Gemstone Strategy Director, Jake Thompson, says:
“It means educating collectors about the opportunity to acquire and treasure a piece of natural history, and it means amplifying the stories of the people behind these precious gemstones.”
Together, Argyle and Ellendale defined Australia’s place in gemological history. Now, the land is being restored and returned to the Aboriginal communities that reside there. Both sites serve as stark reminders that, despite years of being marketed as eternal, natural Diamonds are a finite resource.

The birthstone tradition is rooted in the 12 sacred stones set into the Breastplate of Aaron, worn by high priests in ancient times. Over the centuries, these celestial gems evolved into personal talismans thought to offer protection, health, and fortune. So, by wearing yours – or that of a loved one – you create a modern talisman of your own.
Whether gifted by a loved one or chosen by you, birthstones can reflect special moments, memories and milestones – a heartfelt way to celebrate life’s journey. This season, we’re highlighting Opal, the luminous gem of October; Citrine, the vibrant soul of November; and Tanzanite, the glowing symbol of December.

Treasured for their kaleidoscopic beauty, Opals offer an ever-shifting dance of colour once believed to contain the magic of every gemstone in one.
Opal holds meaning as unique as the stone itself. No two are ever alike, making them a beautiful symbol of individuality. Once thought unlucky, Opal’s reputation was lovingly restored by Queen Victoria, who gifted the gem to her daughters as wedding keepsakes.
If luck is on your side, however, you may encounter the rare Black Opal – what Shakespeare once called ‘The Mother of All Gemstones.’

ALTERNATIVE: TOPAZ
November’s birthstone, Citrine, is said to radiate warmth like sunlight captured in stone. It has long been cherished as a symbol of joy and abundance; favoured for centuries as a talisman of prosperity, Citrine was believed to bring success, good fortune, and glowing optimism.
Ancient Egyptians wore Citrine as an amulet, seeing its golden light as a piece of the sun itself. Today, it’s is a meaningful gift for those embracing new chapters, celebrating confidence, or simply seeking a little more light in their lives.
