Magazine advert analysis

Laura Marling

Artist name The artist name is the biggest writing on the advert which makes it stand out, even when the artist’s name is writing in the same colour and a similar style to the other writing on the advert.

Also, the typography of the artist name is the way it is usually seen through all of her texts, which helps add to her branding. I will keep the typography of my artist’s name the same throughout there text as I think this makes the band easy to remember and makes them recognisable.

Title The albums title sits directly underneath the artist’s name, sticking to the usual conventions of an album cover . The title is slightly smaller than the artist’s name, but slightly bigger than the other information on the advert, showing its importance. I will use a similar style in my magazine advert is a think it is a good way of connoting to the audience the most important aspects of the adverts and draws their attention to these aspects first. Also, I will keep the artist name and the title of album the same colour, like Marling has done, as it is a good way to connect the two.

Action Line

Although the action line is quite small, it works well with the simple and laid back style of the artist and, in a way, shows the type of audience the artist has. For example, a Rihanna magazine advert might have a bigger action line because her target audience is younger and most likely will not be the type of people to take time to read the smaller print of the advert. I will take this on board when creating a magazine advert for ‘50 Leaves’ as my target audience is somewhere between these to artists.

Body copy

The body copy here provides information to the audience about: -When the CD is available -- What is on the CD -- What extras you will receive -- What other formats you can buy the album in -- An action line -The information that the body copy of this advert provides will help me decide what to include in my advert body copy, as this information is normally found on a lot of album magazine adverts I will most likely include all of them.

text The text of the advert is quite simple, only using two different types of text to show which parts of the text are the most important. The text is all the same colour and matching, which adds to the adverts simplicity. As I want my artist’s magazine advert to connote that the bands relaxed style I will use a similar style in the adverts text.

Main image/Focal point Marling has used the same picture for her magazine advert as her album cover, which connects the two and allows the audience to know what they are going to find on any other products the artist may be promoting for the album. Many artist’s do this is it helps the audience to recognise the artist’s products easily, as I will do the same with my artist’s image.

Main image The advert is quite simple, apart from the background where the trees are in a lot of detail. This makes the advert eye-catching because it is not to in your face, yet your eye is drawn to the abstract style of the picture. This abstract style is seen through most of Marling’s text and adds to her folk, rustic style. I will use a similar style in my advert, to insure that the advert draws the audience attention.

Main image The quirky and modern image, like Marling’s branding, helps the album stand out from other albums. The flower in the middle of the man gives the picture something extra and makes the picture more interesting and artistic. It’s simplicity draws the audience attention. I will use simple images which have a twist to them to make my advert stand out.

Colours Although the colours of the advert are a bit bland, they stick to the conventions of only having two or three colours in a poster and it makes the earthy, rustic feel of the artist’s style stand out. As I am going to have a natural style, e.g. Pictures of leaves, running through my artist’s texts I will use similar colours to Marlings.

Message Similar to the look I am going for with my artist’s advert, Laura Marling’s album magazine advert connotes to the audience a natural and relaxed style. This is shown through pictures of flowers, roots, leaves and the green colour of the picture. I would say that the message Marling is trying to send is that the album is quite mysterious and out of the box. I think this because at first glance the picture does not look that extraordinary, but once you look closer you realise that the silhouette of man is merged in with the background image and the red image on the silhouette is not a heart image but a flower. I will use the main image of my album cover to give a message to audience about what the album is going to be like, because I think it intrigues the audience to want to know more about the album.
