Director’s message The phones have been ringing off the hook in the Bribie Island resort sales office, with more people than ever wanting to learn about the many benefits of being part of the GemLife community.

Over the last month, we’ve had some fantastic community events including the RSPCA Million Paws Walk that saw residents, staff and their dogs come together to raise funds for a great cause.

Site works are steaming ahead, with the water and sewerage pipes being placed.

However, the most exciting news of the month is that the first slabs are now being poured as we speak! Watch this space for announcements regarding the display home launch and the grand opening of our GemLife sales office.

work to see that they have poured the concrete road up the main boulevard. We now have our final Building Approvals so we can commence building our first homes!

We held the Biggest Morning tea last week which was attended by 20 people and raised $105 for the Cancer Society.

Our Meet the Owner Presentation on the 15th June is filling up and we already have 150 people attending. Please email me now if you wish to attend as this will be a very informative evening with an update on what is happening at GemLife Bribie Island from owner Adrian Puljich.

We currently have nine couples in rental homes on or near the Island waiting for their homes to be built and another five who have taken up the option for us to pay for the storage of their furniture while they take off in their caravans, or on holiday. On the boardwalk The boardwalk is nearing completion of stage one. Once finished, this will be the perfect spot for an afternoon stroll to watch the sunset over the glittering lake. After the RSPCA Million Paws Walk, the GemLife team decided to take their dogs for a quick dip in the lake – it was definitely enjoyed by the dogs – perhaps not so much for their owners after realising they’d have a wet dog in the car for the journey home…

Bulldozing to victory Bribie Island resort is showing off its latest high-tech equipment again with the addition of a Caterpillar D6 Dozer with GPS. This outfit can trim a road to subgrade height (the height before concrete is laid) in a matter of minutes within a 10mm tolerance. What a beast!

It’s hard to tell what’s going on with the site when you can’t see much up top. Our Civils Project Manager Brett Stehbens kindly took a few sneaky photos for us so we can get the inside scoop on the work being done.

Here we see the electrical, communications and water services being installed. This takes roughly eight weeks to complete – so by the time this newsletter is released, it’ll be well on its way to completion. All GemLife homes are equipped with the infrastructure to receive high-speed fibre-optics.

Brisbane Retirement, Lifestyle and Travel Expo From 5 to 7 May, the GemLife team were out in force at the Retirement, Lifestyle and Travel Expo at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The coveted expo shows off the latest and greatest tech, news and products in the industry.

Showcasing everything from luxury camper vans to gardening tools and mobility scooters, there really was something for everyone to be fascinated by.

The GemLife team brought along their gorgeous Woodie and Silver Streak Van which has featured at many of our events – including the John Farnham concert at the start of the year.

We had tonnes of interest from the crowds and we were told repeatedly by visitors that we had the best stall of the entire expo!

Well done to everyone involved and we look forward to doing it again next year!

Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer. Today, more than 1.1 million Australians are either living with cancer or who have survived a previous diagnosis.

The Cancer Council is the nation’s leading cancer charity, uniting the community, creating hope, providing support, and saving lives. On Thursday 25 May, the GemLife team got together with residents and residents-to-be to raise money for this wonderful cause. Much coffee and cake was had along with plenty of gossip and giggles.

another tick from both of us. I love walking so GemLife Bribie Island and its location near the Pumicestone Passage ticked even more boxes. Bribie Island, particularly Pumicestone Passage, has such an island feel to it and I love that.

After being initially put off by the idea of a retirement village, both Yvonne and Noel were referred to active lifestyle resorts by siblings (one on Yvonne’s side of the family at Hope Island and the other on Noel’s side of the family in Newcastle). After visiting both sides of the family, they saw what was on offer. They had been looking around for potential resorts for about a year when Noel spotted the website for GemLife resort living in Bribie Island. They both felt that it ticked all the boxes. Yvonne tells us a little bit more about Noel, herself, and the decision to choose GemLife Bribie Island: “We had a lot of preconceptions as to what active lifestyle resorts were. When our family referred us to active lifestyle resorts we thought the way they were operated and what they were offering was really fantastic. We became very enthusiastic when we realised how similar the social side was to Caravan Clubs which meet only one week of every month. We were sold on the idea!

“We loved that there’s something for everyone at GemLife Bribie Island. Noel is a real problem solver and loves to fix and tinker. He’s really looking forward to utilising the workshop, learning to bowl and trying his hand at remote control boats, whereas I can’t wait to use the gym, set up walking groups, and meet new people.

GemLife Bribie Island appears to have the whole package – especially for meeting and greeting the like-minded.

“When we discovered GemLife Bribie Island we knew it was the right choice. For me it had to be as close to grandchildren as possible, and as our family are only a 45-60 min drive away, Bribie got a huge tick. We lived at Scarborough with only a 100m walk to the esplanade so when we realised that GemLife Bribie Island has the lake and that it’s just a short walk through the National Park to the beach, it was

Downsizing to upsize your superannuation Older Australians who downsize their homes will be able to add an extra $300,000 per person into their superannuation funds from the sale proceeds, according to the Federal Budget 2017.

Set to start in July 2018, the incentive is designed to remove a key barrier in downsizing in order to free up larger homes for younger families.

Additionally, some retirees can also benefit from pensioner concession cards being restored to people who have previously lost them due to stricter asset tests that came into force last January.

Gem’s one pot wonders

The incentive applies to those over age 65 who decide to sell their main residence, having owned it for at least ten years.

Continuing along our path of winter warmers, this soup is decadent, indulgent but above all, easy to make. This heart-warming combination of flavours will immediately whisk you away to the French Alps and leave you feeling full, satisfied and sleepy.

Retirees will be able to make a nonconcessional, after-tax contribution of up to $300,000 per person.

“These contributions will be in addition to those currently permitted under existing rules and caps and they will be exempt from the existing age test, work test and the $1.6 million balance test for making non-concessional contributions,” the Budget papers say.

The downsizing measure is forecast to cost the Budget $30m over four years, whilst the reintroduction of the pensioner concession card is a one-off cost of $3.1m.

French Onion Soup

Did you know?

Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 2 hours approx.

Our resorts all offer a gourmet Serves: 4 commercial kitchen! Take that Equipment: Heavy-based saucepan, cooking class you always wanted! kitchen twine, oven-safe bowls or mugs (optional)

Ingredients: • 2kg yellow onions, thinly sliced • 100g butter, coarsely chopped • 1 litre (4 cups) beef stock • 4 fresh thyme sprigs

Method:

Preheat oven to 200°C.

Melt butter in a large, heavy-based saucepan over a medium heat.

Ladle soup into oven-proof bowls and transfer to an oven tray.

Add onions, cover and cook, stirring occasionally for 20 minutes until onions are soft.

Scatter with half the cheese, top each with two toasted baguette slices and scatter with remaining cheese.

Remove lid and cook for 1 hour or until soft and starting to caramalise.

Place in oven and cook for five minutes, or until cheese melts.

Add stock, ½ a cup at a time and simmer for five minutes or until stock has almost evaporated.

Serve immediately.

Repeat the last step three times, until two cups of stock have been added.

• 1 fresh bay leaf • 8 x 1cm thick slices of baguette cut diagonally, lightly toasted • 250g coarsely grated Gruyère.

Using kitchen twine, tie herbs together and add to the onions with the remaining stock and season to taste with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 40 minutes or until thick, making sure to scrape the base of the saucepan to remove any caramalised bits.

Chef’s top tips: The soup mixture can be easily frozen, just leave to cool and place in freezer bags. In fact, our sources say that sometimes this soup can be even better when it has been reheated.

Pair with a fine Pinot gris wine for added comfort-factor.

Team GemLife

A family-run business through and through, GemLife would be nowhere without its staff members and we like to make sure they know that they’re appreciated. Here you can learn a little about their backgrounds and why they love working for GemLife.

What inspires you?

SR: Hmm, it varies day to day. I’m very motivated by food, so if you ever want to get work out of me – snacks always help!

I’ve always been very arty, so I would say I’m inspired by nature, daily life, and the world around me. I love to draw, paint and create but generally, I do a lot more writing these days. I’m always looking for juicy stories and interesting tales. You could say that I’m professionally nosey!

What do you most enjoy about your role?

Samantha Regan, our Communications Director, is a fairly recent addition having been with us for just over three months.

Sam moved to Australia five years ago and has never looked back. A true Pom – she’s easily sunburnt, excellent at queueing, and whinges about the weather a lot.

With a background in journalism, Sam has spent the last few years as a content writer and now manages “all the wordage” for GemLife as our Sales and Marketing Manager, Ben Livingstone says. Here, Sam tells us a little more about herself: How did you get into writing?

SR: I sort of fell into it really. I studied English at university and after I graduated, I completed my journalism qualification. At that point, I was doing some freelance work for a couple of newspapers and then the opportunity arose for me to move to The Land Down Under. Since I moved here, I’ve worked mostly as an editor and written for several publications in addition to doing my own freelance content writing.

SR: I love the variety of people I get to speak to. A lot of my role includes speaking to our residents and hearing about how they came to find GemLife. I get to speak to people from all walks of life and some of their stories are just incredible. Many times I’ve been clutching my sides laughing at things our residents have told me, but then on the flipside I’ve also been moved to tears at some of the more heartfelt moments. I’m not even particularly emotional, I’ve just found that GemLife people really are all incredibly kind-hearted, funny, and just great to be around. When I’m not chatting with residents, I really love coming into the office every day just to work. We have such a great team here, and there’s not a day that goes by when I don’t get a big belly laugh – a lot of the time I feel like I’m surrounded by friends rather than colleagues.

What is your favourite GemLife home?

SR: My favourite is Tranquil III. It has the second largest floorplan of our entire range and the bonus walk-in pantry would be perfect for me. I love cooking so the added storage space would be ideal

for the copious ingredients I purchase and then end up not using because I’ve forgotten about them. I also really like the large alfresco. Indoor/outdoor living is really important for a lot of people now – especially in the gorgeous Queensland weather. The double garage would also be perfect for me – I’d convert half of it into a dog-den.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

SR: I spend a lot of time with my dog – whether that’s whilst bulk-watching a new Netflix series cuddled on the couch or terrorising people at the dog park. Penny is a Great Dane, so she frightens a few people despite being a very large sook. We have a dog-friendly office so it’s great to bring her in during the week, although with her head being desk height, a lot of my (and other people’s) paperwork gets drooled on. Other than spending time with Penny, I read a lot and like to visit new exhibitions and museums. There’s always something going on and I love trying to expand my mind.

Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

SR: Definitely still in Australia! I was recently granted my citizenship after a long and arduous journey to get it. I love living here and have really embraced the Aussie way of life – I even call flip-flops ‘thongs’ now. I hope I’m still with GemLife in 10 years. We have so many exciting projects coming up and I’d love to see them all through to the end.

GemLife dogs have their day

The GemLife pose heroically after a long day’s walk

On Sunday 21 May, hundreds of hounds descended upon the Bribie Island foreshore for the annual RSPCA Million Paws Walk. The 4.4km stroll saw dogs of all shape and size in varying outfits get together to raise money for the fantastic charity.

Despite weather reports advising that the weekend was in for more rainfall than recent tropical cyclone Debbie, the Sunday saw beaming sunshine from dusk until dawn. GemLife Bribie Island residents and staff pulled together for the fantastic day and raised in excess of $500 for the cause.

To celebrate, the team were treated to a delicious breakfast to bring their energy levels back up, along with a quick trip to the Bribie Island resort site to be given a guided tour of the progress.
