Bakelite is a fire resistant, castable plastic which was invented in 1909 by Leo Baekeland. This plastic is actually used for industrial purpose until the jewelry makers realize that they can use this light weight material to design and manufacture bracelets, pins, rings and other jewelry which will be cheaper consider to other jewelry. The jewelries became popular in 1930’s and 1940’s when a wide variety of colours was introduced. The costume jewelry manufacturers were fascinated to Bakelite because it was bit difficult to

The wide range of colours is available like Butterscotch, Creamed Corn, Egg Yolk, and Salmon. Some Bakelite is marbled and they are popularly known as Creamed Spinach, Mississipi Mud,
and Chocolate Sundae. They are extremely beautiful and attractive. Lime Jell-O, Root Beer and Cherry Juice are translucent Bakelite which is not easily available.
