MAYOR’S MESSAGE In recent years, Council has prioritised supporting community-led, grassroots projects by significantly increasing our annual Community Grants program funding.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, we decided to review this program to make sure it would best support the region’s recovery from the impacts of the lockdown restrictions.

As a result, the grants budget for 2020-21 was increased to a record $5.2 million, including the addition of grants streams specifically dedicated to COVID-19 recovery initiatives across business, the arts and community groups. So far, as part of this initiative, more than $400,000 has been awarded to local businesses through our COVID-19 Business Recovery Grants program – further details on this grant program are outlined on the next page.

The grants will fund new pavilions, better training facilities, improved lighting and new play spaces for children, amongst other things.

It all adds up to the community having more and better options to be physically and socially active, and develop that precious sense of belonging which comes through participation in a local club or group.

The Council’s next major opportunity to fund community facility upgrades will come through our 2021-22 budget.

A draft of this important budget document will be available for your feedback by May – please share your ideas and input on the draft when the opportunity presents later this year.

Recently, we were also delighted to announce the recipients of our largest and most important grants stream – our community infrastructure grants.

This year, grants of up to $350,000 were awarded to 49 different (mostly volunteer-run) community clubs and groups to plan or carry out facilities upgrades – with a total of just over $3 million distributed.

CONNECTING LOCAL MAKERS WITH NEW MARKETS

Join recent RISE graduate Aiden McGivern and start your career in construction.

BUILD A CAREER WITH RISE Geelong’s Regional Industry Sector Employment (RISE) program is looking for young people keen to take their first steps towards a career in construction.

Some of the offerings in CODE Souvenir Geelong include a Geelong Weaving Mill blanket (top), delicious mini pack of honey (middle) and coastal tea towel (bottom).

Nearly 50 local creative businesses have been chosen to feature in CODE Souvenir Geelong, a curated catalogue of locally-designed products aimed at boosting creative industries in our region.

Led by the City as part of our UNESCO City of Design designation, CODE Souvenir aims to promote talented local makers and connect them with new markets including business events, tourism, retail and corporate gifts, which in turn supports their recovery from the impacts of COVID-19.

Other Creative Cities network members, like Montreal and Dundee, have had great success with CODE Souvenir initiatives for their creative communities.

CODE Souvenir Geelong will feature quality handcrafted jewellery, glass and ceramics, artisan food and drinks, unique clothing, homewares and original artworks.

HELPING LOCAL BUSINESSES TO BOUNCE BACK Our COVID-19 Business Recovery Grants program is helping more than 80 local businesses to adapt their operations, develop new services and bounce back from COVID-19 restrictions.

The program’s first round awarded over $400,000 to help fund marketing and promotional campaigns, digital technology upgrades, solar energy projects, online training, and improved eCommerce capabilities for 85 small businesses.

The recovery grants are designed to support businesses that have been impacted by

COVID-19 restrictions, helping them innovate and adapt by creating and sustaining local jobs, building skills for employees, and encouraging local spending and business-to-business collaboration.

The grants are part of one of Council’s six COVID-19 support packages, with approximately $16.9 million budgeted to assist businesses, community groups and residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Led by the City and sponsored by local employment provider Gforce, RISE provides trade and team-building skills, work experience and personal development to prepare jobseekers for construction apprenticeships.

RISE graduate Aiden McGivern, 21, is now a second-year apprentice with Belmont-based Pickering Joinery. Placed by RISE and Gforce, Aiden’s lifelong love of timber made joinery his natural apprenticeship choice. A fan of school woodwork classes and home furniture projects, Aiden now gets paid to work in a job he loves.

GEELONG TO HOST MAJOR CITIES OF DESIGN MEETING Our region’s creative and design capabilities are set to shine on the international stage when Geelong hosts the 2021 UNESCO Cities of Design Subnetwork Meeting from 10 to 12 October 2021.

Following a vote between all 40 international cities of design, Geelong was chosen as the destination for this annual event.

We will work with the UNESCO network over coming months to determine the best way to deliver the meeting while managing global COVID-19 impacts.

The program will be developed with local partners, such as Business Events Geelong, to deliver an inspiring event that showcases Geelong’s design and creativity.

This landmark event recognises Geelong’s work in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and offers the chance to showcase our region’s creative and design capabilities to the rest of the world.

Since July 2018, more than 70 participants in the RISE program have become work-ready candidates for the local building and construction industry.

OUTDOOR DINING TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES

Expanded outdoor dining areas, which help businesses through the COVID-19 pandemic, are being created across Greater Geelong.

Through Victorian Government funding, we’re rolling out trials of accessible outdoor seating, increased street greenery and extra footpath space, providing extra capacity for diners to enjoy our local cafes and restaurants while maintaining COVIDSafe distancing in open-air settings.

This year’s Youth Council has hit the ground running as it continues the great work achieved by the previous members.

Elliot Nicholas was elected as Junior Mayor accompanied by Minnie DacresMannings as Junior Deputy Mayor – both representing the Brownbill Ward.

The 12 members attended their first monthly meeting in February, where they discussed possible priority areas to explore during their term. These will be presented to Council through their first report in March.

Youth Council serves as an official advisory committee and youth voice to Council.

IT’S TIME TO RENEW PET REGISTRATIONS Do you have a four-legged friend at home? Every dog and cat from three months of age must be registered.

Registration renewal notices will be sent to existing pet owners in March, with payment due by 10 April.

It is part of a wider outdoor dining movement in Geelong, as we’ve issued more than 60 temporary permits for new or extended al fresco areas in recent months.

The trial initiative began in Ocean Grove in December, which is being extended until 18 April to help meet the anticipated influx of visitors over the Easter break.

Pakington Street (Geelong West), Yarra Street (Geelong) and Union Street (Geelong) are proposed sites for outdoor dining trials, following community consultation in February.

City Hall will be transformed into a digital canvas to recognise this year’s National Reconciliation Week.

This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme is ‘More than a word.

Reconciliation takes action’, and the City’s Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan adopted by Council in 2020 outlines the City’s commitment to action.

Stunning artworks created by Aboriginal men on Wadawurrung country will be projected on to City Hall, recognising their talent and supporting the work of The Torch Project, which provides new pathways by encouraging the exploration of identity and culture through art. The projections also offer a prompt to reflect on the reality that Indigenous Australians are 13 time more likely to be incarcerated than nonIndigenous Australians.

SWIMMING LESSONS ARE BACK!

Webstar’s Swim School has returned to our Swim Sport and Leisure centres!

After swimming lessons were suspended in March 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, lessons are now back up and running with over 7,000 students back in the pool.

The easing of restrictions has also meant other services and programs have resumed across our centres, including our crèche and LiveWell programs.

We are also thrilled to see the return of our gymnastics program at Bellarine Aquatic and Sports Centre.

A HELPING HAND TO SAVE AN ICON The Geelong Botanic Gardens’ largest bottle tree (Brachychiton rupestris) is receiving some much-needed TLC after strong winds caused a significant split through its trunk in December.

A steel pin clamp mechanism has been installed and will be regularly tightened to encourage the tree to mend itself.

This clever and creative approach is intended to save the bottle tree, which welcomes visitors at the entrance of the gardens and is one of 10 located on site.

CLEVER AND CREATIVE An artist impression of the Sculptural Wave Attenuator to be enjoyed during high and low tide.

NEW ECO-FRIENDLY REEF DESIGNED FOR THE DELL A clever and creative project that works to reduce coastal erosion and create habitats for marine life is coming to Clifton Springs.

The modular reef units will curb wave energy along the coast and create a new home for a range of marine species, such as shellfish, seaweed and invertebrates.

We’ve partnered with world-leading artificial reef designer Alex Goad to create the eco-friendly Sculptural Wave Attenuator at The Dell.

The installation will complement The Dell Historic Mineral Springs Boardwalk, which will provide safe pedestrian access around to the next beach.

Visitors will be able to enjoy the attraction at both high and low tides.

TAKING RECYCLING TO THE STREETS More than 19 tonnes of recycled glass has been used to resurface two sections of road in Lara as part of a new trial.

The innovative trial, by Fulton Hogan, sees recycled glass processed into sand and used as a replacement for both manufactured and natural sand in the base layer when laying asphalt.

A 275-metre stretch on Walkers Rd, between Mill Rd and Waverley Rd, was resurfaced along with approximately 140-metres of McClelland Ave from the rail crossing to Hicks St.

CLEVER TIPS TO HELP YOU RETHINK YOUR RUBBISH

Using glass as a replacement material means it’s saved from landfill while serving as a great example of a circular economy in action.

Upgrades along Walkers Rd are funded by the Federal Government through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program.

There are many clever ways to reuse old materials and waste so it doesn’t end up in your rubbish bin.

CLEAN TECHNOLOGY LEADS THE WAY

Do you have old clothes and sheets not suitable for an op-shop? Contact your local animal shelter to see if they can be put to use and give some comfort to cats and dogs waiting to be adopted.

Not sure what to do with soft plastics?

Keep a bag in the kitchen and fill it with bread bags, frozen food bags and other soft plastic packaging unable to be recycled via your recycling bin.

Drop off your soft plastics collection at the REDcycle bins at participating Coles or Woolworths supermarkets during your next grocery shop.

This year, like many things, Pako Festa will look a little different. There are new ways to experience our region’s diverse mix of cultures. Running each night from 8.30pm to 11.30pm on a continuous loop, see stunning projections on the Geelong West Town Hall. Starts 27 February and finishes 13 March. Then, go exploring with the Discovery Arts Trail between 27 February and 27 March along Pakington Street (Gordon Avenue to Church Street) and find the works of professional and emerging local artists and local schools.

Have you seen Geelong’s 10 colourful UooUoos? These curious looking (and imaginary) creatures are on display at Federal Mills in North Geelong as part of a public art trail celebrating the 150th anniversary of The Royal Children’s Hospital.

Celebrating 40 years since the games first commenced, Geelong will proudly host members of Victoria Police and their Emergency Services colleagues who will be competing in this multi-sport event over five days at various locations across the region.

Don’t miss your chance to see these Aussie legends rock Mt Duneed Estate with music from their Aria #1 mini-album. Joining Midnight Oil will be an amazing line up of First Nations collaborators for this one of a kind concert.
