Prepare to be Charged, Volta Charged

The first time I met Volta Charge, “she” was actually “he” not in drag, sipping a martini in the corner of a dimly lit bar. I had already had a few, and because there was no one else at the bar (the now defunct Main Street Bar in Laguna Beach), I struck up a conversation with Volta, and her responses were dripping with biting wit and snappy comebacks. She was a worthy conversation adversary, with idioms from Hollywood of yesteryear – I was transfixed. I blurted out, “You are so funny, you should be a drag queen!” Not missing a beat, she chugged the rest of her martini, looked at me, and smiled, “I am, sweetie…I am,” threw her money on the bar, and walked out. Little did I know I was in the presence of Volta Charge, and immediately recognized her from the myriad of flyers on social media.

With her mobile drag kit, she literally pops up all over Southern California with regular gigs at Our Place in Lake Forest, Bullet Bar in North Hollywood, and One Eleven Bar in Cathedral City, just to name a few. She peppers in pop-up appearances everywhere in between her regular gigs. Her look is unique, capturing elements from classic films to the current trends of the pop culture world. Next time you see her, see if she is wearing her lobster shoes. We are thrilled to feature Volta for our GED August Drag Spotlight… prepared to be CHARGED, Volta Charged!

What is your hometown?

Arvada, Colorado.

How did you come up with your drag name?

I love Storm from X-Men, so I went with an electric name.

Favorite part about doing drag?

The audience’s reactions to my performances, and the energy I get back is amazing.

Least favorite part about doing drag?

The heat!

What was your first exposure to drag?

I grew up born and raised Nichiren Buddhist, so I grew up in a very open-minded family and was going to Denver Pride early on. I think my earliest memory of a drag queen was watching To Wong Foo with my mom.

What made you decide to go professional?

I grew up as an entertainer, dancing in my sister’s dance company, Murphy Repertory Dance Company, and later with Radio Disney. Performing was always my life goal. Once I started doing drag, I knew this was the perfect conduit to share my art and would spend the rest of my life doing it.

What was your first professional drag gig like?

It was an LGBTQ+ Veteran Fundraiser at Charlie’s Denver. My mom and best friend came, and I was so nervous. I performed IN FLATS! Definitely baby drag vibes, but my performances

GEDMAG.com | 11

were good enough to open many more opportunities around Denver to learn and grow.

What makes your drag different than other queens out there?

I’m not a huge fan of comparing myself to other queens. I am a believer that all drag is valid. I am also a believer in not all drag is marketable. I understand the business side of being an entertainer, not just a performer. My style of drag can be very old-school Hollywood or mainstream top 40, but I run my own shows and pay my taxes. That’s how mine is different [laughs].

You have performed all over, even in ultra-conservative Orange County. Aren’t you scared of the ultra-conservative neighborhoods?

Of course, I am scared of performing in those areas. The main thing to understand when performing in those spaces is understanding that we’re guests in their house. I change my jokes, my numbers, and my costumes to mold myself into something that is palatable for that audience, and it usually goes well. There have been times a problem has come up, but the owners always have my back. Cliff, the owner of Our Place Bar in Lake Forest, has always had my back and has been supportive.

What is the best way we can support the drag community?

Support local entertainers and businesses. There are so many absolutely fabulous entertainers in SoCal and so many LGBTQ+ businesses that must be seen and experienced. I run

shows and work at some of the best gay-owned and operated businesses - Bullet Bar, Ps Air Bar, One Eleven Bar. Supporting your local shows and entertainers supports our local gay bars. Without them, we’d be dancing on Zoom again.

Craziest drag story?

That’s not X-rated? [Laughs] Probably having to climb three stories of balconies to break into my friend’s apartment on New Year’s Eve because he didn’t have his keys while I was in drag. I was very proud of not falling and dying.

Your strangest hobby or talent?

I can do this two-tone whistle that’s fun. I’m also a great cook. What celebrity most needs a drag makeover?

Rosanne Barr (and maybe some therapy).

Favorite LA hotspot?

The Bullet Bar in North Hollywood.

Favorite LA non-profit?

LALC Cares and The Bullet Pantry. They helped so many people, including me, during the pandemic and still help many.

What is your coming out story?

Oh, my whole family knew before I did. When I was 12, I decided to come out. My entire immediate family was completely supportive. My mom and brother and sisters have all come to my shows. I am fortunate to have such a wonderful family.

What would the name of your biography be?

Fully Charged Mediocrity

Favorite song to perform to?

Oh gees, ummm. Tory Kelly’s version of “Don’t You Worry About a Thing.”

What is your after-drag ritual?

FOOD! Lots of food. And a hot shower.

What’s your favorite pickup line?

I have decent credit, a car, and a job……usually, that works. [laughs]

What is your message to the drag community?

Stay strong, stay positive, and bring joy and light to the masses when the darkness tries to bring us down. We are the beacons lighting the days and nights ahead of us. And… wash your tights.

Where can we find and follow you?

Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok: @voltacharge

DEVEN & NED

Harmonious Collaboration

If you have yet to experience Deven and The Handsome Ned, here is your invitation to do so. I met this dynamic duo about eight years ago, and it was an instant bond. They are both so uniquely themselves that most people that encounter them are drawn in immediately to their effervescent vibe. Their musical talents appeal to all different age groups (if needed for child’s birthday party or something) and their material from the American Song Book goes on for weeks.

I was overjoyed that they took time out of their busy schedule to answer some questions about themselves as a couple and as individuals.

Both of you are transplants from outside the United States of America. What life events brought each of you here?

Ned: I was the musical director for Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. When he immigrated to America, he asked me to come and run his studio. I had been to Los Angeles for a film school course, and I fell in love with it.

Deven: I heard it was warm! (Deven is originally from Canada.)

Was music the catalyst that brought the two of you together, or did your paths cross in some other way?

Deven: Here is the heartfelt version: Music possesses an extraordinary power to unite. As Ned was producing a particular album,

fate intertwined our paths. I found myself fully immersed in a harmonious collaboration with Ned, playing and co-writing on the same album. The anticipation grew as our creative endeavors converged within the walls of the studio, marking the long-awaited moment of our personal encounter.

Ned: Absolutely!

You have both had highly successful careers and recently relocated from the City of Angels to our beautiful desert oasis of Palm Springs. Most people would think that, in your line of work, LA would be the place to be and to be seen. Have you seen an increase or decrease in work opportunities since the move, and how have things changed for both of you?

Ned: Most of our creative work can be done remotely. However, performing our live music or bingo shows in the valley is great because the audiences here are always up for fun. There is also an abundance of talent out here. Deven and I had a fantastic time in Los Angeles and continue to experience professional and personal success in this new chapter.

Deven: The desert has a magical allure. Ethyl, remember when you invited us to judge the “Queen of the Desert” competition in Palm Springs in 2018? That planted the seed for our move here.

Then David Marvel brought it to full realization for us.

Both of you have had the opportunity to perform and be a part of various shows in different locations. If you had to choose, what are your top two moments that made you feel like you were dreaming?

Deven: When Nancy Sinatra said our version of “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” was AMAZING!

Ned: Listening to firsthand stories from oldschool musicians who played with some of the greats. It’s just so rich.

Not only are you both highly entertaining, but you also have some pretty kick-ass merchandise under your brand. Tell us about your top sellers and where some of the ideas came from.

Deven: We love creating casually filthy, lighthearted items. We are grateful that Palm Springs Bottle Shop, PS Homeboys, and Peepa’s are into carrying our merchandise. We’re also thrilled about our upcoming hardcover book, “Bitch Face” which will be released soon.

Mrs. Betty Bowers, “America’s Best Christian.” Please discuss…

Always plenty to say right here: Youtube.com/ MrsBettyBowers

You are both considered to be allies of the LGBTQIA+ community. What advice do you have for other allies who want to help combat the recent surge of hateful legislation popping up in almost every state?

Deven: Ned and I strongly believe that none of our friends should be merely “tolerated,” so we do not fight for tolerance. We fight for, and will continue to fight for, 100% acceptance and equality.

What upcoming engagements do you have on the calendar where all your friends, family, and fans can gather to support you and your artistry?

Ned: Deven is fantastic online, so please visit DevenGreen.com to find out what the hell we are up to!

Deven: Thank you friends for the tremendous love you have shown us. Living in the Coachella Valley really makes us ‘put out.’

Hope to see you at a show soon!

Joyfully, Ethyl

SINCE 2017

Derek Jameson

Fulfilling His Destiny

Performer Derek Jameson is no stranger to Pride stages and most recently headlining a day full of LGBTQ fellowship and entertainment at a local county fair. Derek’s music reaches beyond our community, however, with themes and textures that sample from many different musical genres.

Hailing from San Jose, he started performing and writing his own music at a very early age, hitting the professional circuit at age 15 at Paramount’s Great America in Santa Clara. Music and dance have always been in his blood, inspired early on by Tori Amos.

I was a very depressed 8th grader at the time, and I happened to turn on MTV Unplugged and it was Tori Amos who was playing a set. The moment she started I heard, “This is what you have to do.” From then on, I started learning how to play, write songs, and sing my own material.

Derek has also written for producer/DJs Morgan Page, Bijou, Matroda, and Kaleena Zanders, collaborating with songwriter to the stars, Jessica Hoover, and producer Trent Park. As a performer, he has traveled the world, including a tour in Asia. He also took the stage as the opening act for Darren Criss and Danity Kane. Even with collaborations, Derek’s sound and style are instantly recognizable. What sets Derek apart from other musicians?

I believe we are all channels of energy. When I write or play, it is a conscious and deliberate transmission from higher light. I know that I am channeling energy that enlivens healing within a listener. It isn’t me healing them, it is them giving themselves permission to heal themselves. I may discuss darkness in my material, but it never comes without the light. They must always come together.

I could have taken more traditional routes of propelling my career, but those opportunities never felt right to me. Even when I was signed to a label and worked with a producing team, it never worked out well. They always seemed to come at a self-sacrificing price. I wasn’t willing to polarize away from who I am. Then I would not be fulfilling my destiny.

Part of being true to himself, was his decision to be an openly queer artist, no matter how it may have affected his career. That decision to did come easy.

When I was young, I didn’t want to be known as a queer artist because of two reasons. One, I didn’t want to limit my scope of connection between my music and the listener. And two, I was bullied since I was a kid. I was ingrained in shame of who I was. I ran away from the part of me that I was meant to be. I was resistant to having that label. I was still identifying with the ego aspect of myself that held me back from my own potential power. That said, I was never afraid of people knowing I was gay and playing in all the gay clubs and LA Pride mainstage. I just didn’t want the straight community to think that this music wasn’t about them too. We are all one unified community. My music is very much a part of them as it is me regardless of sexual preference. Now, I am proud to be a queer artist. It was all a part of my journey as a human being evolving to greater states of empowerment.

Being a queer artist means being a leader for others who are coming up. It means paving the path for healing that divides humanity. Being a queer artist gives young ones coming up, permission to be themselves and use their authentic voice to bring power and love to this planet.

Derek won the best pop category at the New York Independent Music and Film Festival and has been nominated for his music in the independent film circuit and has been featured in both film and television projects. His creative process begins the moment an idea hits his ear.

I typically hear a melody in meditation or in the middle of the night. I hum the melody into my phone. Then get the piano and start building from that small frequency of sound I was given. I usually let the words come without forcing them. Then they are just words without complete intention. I hit the digital workstation and start painting the sounds and see what comes out. I never know the full sound. I let the sound create in the moment.

If you’ve ever seen him perform live, he is as electric while he is dancing and singing to a high-energy track, or if he is simply by himself, with a mic and keyboard, entrancing you with his voice. The audience becomes part of the experience.

The live performance isn’t all about me. That’s the best part. It’s about the conversation between me AND the listener. My songs carry a certain frequency. If you are there with me in the moment of a performance, then the transmission

GEDMAG.com | 21

of its energy and message is for you. It’s nothing without you. The tender piano vocal moments allow us to dig into the cellular level where our magic lives. Watching people connect with me in such intimacy is awesome.

Derek is constantly evolving. His music all carries the same intense through line, but as he has learned more about the industry and cut his teeth, his music, too, has evolved.

When I started, my music was about pulling out the pain I was storing within me. It was a way to communicate when I didn’t feel like I could. Now, I don’t need that to channel my pain and fear. I use music to celebrate love and the greater awareness of our existence. It is more conscious. I know what I am channeling through me now and where to conduct it.

And how has Derek personally changed from his time in the business?

I trust myself more. At first, I never trusted myself and therefore couldn’t trust others. I didn’t believe in myself. Others believe in us more than we believe in ourselves. I made an agreement to trust myself and listen to myself. That inner knowing and development are what evolve us into more authenticity where a true connection with others can be experienced. A place of safety first begins with us and that is how all of our other relationships can ground.

I am never afraid of placing myself front and center. Fear attracts fear. I was in Egypt on 9/11 and Morocco the next year. I tend to jump into the fires. [laughs] If I go up on a stage knowing very well that my music is one of many bridges to healing the disconnection we experience between each other, then I have no fear that what I am here to carry out will do just that. In fact, I have many straight males who believe in me and what I’m doing more than those in the gay community. I believe there is healing on all levels in that one.

With a large library of original music, which of his songs represents who he is currently?

My latest song “Forever You” is where I am presently. Just in a space of love and appreciation. Life changes so fast and in an instant. Things are changing on the surface, but underneath it ALL there is absolute love and everything else is just an aspect expression of that. This song is about that undying love that we carry through lifetimes, realities, and dimensions.

As if the music wasn’t spiritual enough, Derek also works with countless people in spiritual development as a Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique practitioner who uses past life regression work to help his clients. He’s worked with Hollywood celebrities from HBO’s Euphoria, Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, The Big Bang Theory, and many more as a celebrity regression-

ist and Tarot reader. He has been featured in People Magazine, Thrive Global, and Wealth Insider for his work. How did he first get into the spiritual world?

I started reading Tarot when I was a teenager for a Halloween event. I had to stop, though, because I was attracting a lot of dark spirits when doing readings. I was too young to know responsibility. Years later I was playing music for Kaleena Zanders in Dallas, Texas, and the spirits started to reconnect with me and told me it was time to go back into it. So, the moment I said I was ready was when it all flooded in. It was like a boot camp...hard and heavy. The light prepared me and guided me to do past life regression for people. I studied QHHT which is Dolores Canon’s method. I have been doing that for years now. I also lead groups in past life meditations. It’s so beautiful and mind-blowing.

According to Derek, working with a spiritual coach can help with breaking cycles and patterns, taking power back, interpreting dreams, curbing anxiety, finding life’s purpose, and even health and fitness.

Spiritual coaching allows people to reveal their true selves. It helps them take the power back that they gave away at one point. It grounds trust and self-love. People turn away from the spiritual world, but what they are really turning away from is themselves. The part of them asking them to activate and evolve. I help people as they are awakening these levels of consciousness. Not only does it serve them, but it literally positively affects everyone in their lives, their past lives, and their ancestral line. Everything is consciousness. I help people remember that inner knowing.

Derek’s spiritual and musical worlds are one and the same, both working in tandem to make Jameson a success in both realms.

As a channel for spirit, when I write or perform, I am channeling higher light through me so that everyone is receiving a frequency of light that will activate them. This can happen through words, sound, or even just movement. Artists are all channels. Many of them just don’t realize it. Some of them are channeling darkness and some light and most are channeling both simultaneously. Everyone’s consciousness will allow them to see what they are ready for.

What is Derek’s message to the community?

Celebrate your existence. It is an absolute blessing to be a part of the human experience. Celebrate being here. Celebrate all aspects of you. There is a reason why you are here now.

ON STAGE with

I continue to enjoy outdoor theatre events such as the Hollywood Bowl, Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach, and The Old Globe in San Diego. However, it’s almost too hot, so for this month, I have selected some indoor productions.

PETER PAN GOES WRONG: The Play That Goes Wrong opened in London in 2012 and on Broadway in 2017. In 2019 the Broadway production moved to off-Broadway, which just means it currently plays in a house with fewer than 500 seats (and allows the producers to pay the cast a different rate). It shows the hilarious misadventures when a local English theatre company tries to present The Murder at Haversham Manor, a typical British mystery. Everything that could go wrong does, and the result is nonstop laughs. Actors get knocked out and the stage crew takes their roles, parts of the set collapse, etc. Some of the incidental business takes on Cirque du Soleil dimensions like when an actor trips and the book he is holding sails across the stage and lands firmly in the hands of another actor. The Mischief Theatre Company which produced that play has subsequently produced two sequels and the funnier one, Peter Pan Goes Wrong, is coming to Los Angeles’s Ahmanson Theatre this month. It will arrive after a 16-week run on Broadway. Unlike the first Play That Goes Wrong, this one uses multiple sets and much more fanciful costumes, but the laughs are packed in with a full-figured Tinkerbell, Darling Children played by very adult actors, and rivalries and ineptitude rampant throughout. Who couldn’t use a good laugh these days? Plays at the Ahmanson Theatre 8/8 – 9/10 (CenterTheatreGroup.org).

ALADDIN: Okay, before you slam this magazine shut with concern that I’m listing a Disney musical, please hear me out. I saw this show on Broadway, caught it again on tour when I was vacationing in Florida, and I can’t wait to see it a third time. It’s actually that good! Sure, it’s the Disney story about the poor boy who finds a lamp, but the very cheeky genie (Robin Williams in the animated film, James Monroe Inglehart winning a Tony on Broadway) and some incredible staging and choreography make this a show that can be seen again and again. On Broadway, the number “Friend Like Me” received a three-minute standing ovation in the middle of the first act. It was directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw (Book of Mormon, Mean Girls) who delights audiences but must terrify dancers because of the demands he makes of them. The “Friend” number has three costume changes for the ensemble during the number, finishing with a lengthy tap routine. The second time I

saw the show, I sat in the third row from the stage thinking I would surely figure out how the magic carpet flies. Nope. The damned rug picks up two people and effortlessly carries them around the stage, once in moonlight and then again in full illumination, and I still don’t have a clue. Sure, you can grab a nephew or niece to drag along if you are sensitive about attending a fairy tale show, but with or without the youngsters, do yourself a favor! Plays at the SF Orpheum 8/2-13; Hollywood Pantages 9/12-23; and Orange County’s Segerstrom Center 5/7 – 12, 2024.

THE RED SUITCASE: This is an untried value – a world premiere. The Best Play Winner in the “Del Shores Foundation Writers Search,” The Red Suitcase by Jiggs Burgess follows the life of Pogue from his unusual birth to the death of his father. The play explores the sometimes-difficult relationship between fathers and sons and the many moments, stories, and characters that build a person and a life. Pogue is led on a journey to unpack his memories that takes him from, “we are the sins of our ancestors” to “we are the hope of our ancestors.” A play of family, survival, and finding ourselves in the stories that made us. The production is directed by gay icon Del Shores and presented in the relatively intimate Broadwater Theatre in Los Angeles. If you are used to big productions, I highly recommend you explore some intimate storytelling. Plays 8/10 – 9/3 (https://p3theatre.biz/theredsuitcase/).

On the Map in Gay Palm Springs

Palm Springs is truly unlike any other destination in the US –and this is especially true when talking about Gay resorts and businesses. While we have talked about gay and clothing optional resorts before, we want to acknowledge our friends at Descanso Resort in Palm Springs, because they are definitely doing it right. The Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice “Best of the Best” awards were just announced, and Descanso Resort ranked 12th in the top 25 Small Inns and Hotels category in the entire United States for 2023. The awards are based on guest reviews and ratings, so the guests at this gay men’s boutique hotel are happy!

Descanso Resort has made its mark in less than two years after its Grand Opening, and offers gay men a relaxed boutique hotel environment, that is close to all the action of Palm Springs and the Arenas District - restaurants, nightclubs, and shopping.

Inspired by Palm Springs’ history as a destination for Hollywood stars to unwind in privacy, Descanso offers guests a casual yet modern take on the legendary style of that time. Created by the same hospitality team that revitalized Palm Springs’ Santiago Resort and the new Twin Palms Resort, the Descanso property opened in 2022, and features 15 spacious guest rooms with custom-designed furniture, King-size beds, and luxury details. Guests enjoy a daily continental breakfast, poolside lunch, welcome snack basket, and lots of special touches like hi-speed Wi-Fi and bicycles for exploring the nearby neighborhoods. You can even grab the latest issue of GED Magazine to read

poolside!

“Our entire team is honored to be named Best of the Best. To be the only gay men’s resort recognized in the Top 1% is incredibly humbling,” said Kent Taylor, General Manager at Descanso. “We appreciate Tripadvisor and we’re grateful to all our guests who gave us such high marks and reviews to help us reach this achievement.”

According to Tripadvisor’s Chief Growth Officer, John Boris, “Ranking among the Best of the Best demonstrates that you have provided exemplary experiences to those who matter most: your guests. With changing expectations, continued labor shortages, and rising costs, this is no easy feat, and I am continually impressed with the hospitality industry’s resilience and ability to adapt.”

As a Gay Men’s resort, you won’t find any kids at Descanso. What you will find is a friendly, welcoming environment, with attention to detail and maximum focus on relaxation and enjoyment of your time in Palm Springs – from the sparking pool, lush tropical landscape, and mid-century modern appointed rooms. This is truly an escape, yet so close to all the wonderful things that Palm Springs has to offer. You can find out more and book a stay by visiting descansoresort.com.

Speaking of the wonders of Palm Springs, here are some spots to check out:

Further downtown, and still walking distance, you have some must stops on your travel itinerary:

• Tac/Quila (415 N Palm Canyon Drive) at one mile away, Tac/Quila is worth the walk! This made up word combines gourmet Jalisco style cuisine with specialty tequilas and mezcals, to transport guests south of the border and into a culture rich in flavor, color, art, and authenticity. Try the Flight of 4 Tasting Size Margaritas - Pineapple Passion, Spicy Cucumber, Watermelon Tamarindo, Jamaica. Delicious!

• El Tuggle across the street (388 N Palm Canyon Drive), brings men’s and women’s fashion to a new level. Each piece is designed and curated by the husband/husband team of Rodrigo and Robert, whose love for life and fashion intersect, bringing inner beauty to life. We cannot get enough of their designs!

• Forever Marilyn (Museum Way) is the 26-foot tall, 24,000-pound monumental sculpture of Marilyn Monroe created by sculptor Seward Johnson with stainless steel and aluminum. This dramatic sculpture is extremely realistic, especially in the skin tones. Forever Marilyn sits right in front of the Palm Springs Art Museum, with 28 galleries, two sculpture gardens, an 85-seat lecture hall, a 433-seat theater, a 1,000-square-foot store, and a bistro.

• Downtown on Thursday nights is the weekly market VillageFest, with stalls of local merchants featuring art, vinyl, gourmet foods, and crafts.

Next-Level Nayarit Fly Direct to Puerto Vallarta and Its Surrounding Splendor

Gays are magic. We sprinkle fabulousness wherever we go, we wear tacky/triumphant ensembles, and we make inhibitions disappear.

Ta da! You’re welcome.

A group as majestic as us deserves vacation vibes to match. Luckily, Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism has put marvelous on the map in the form of Pueblos Mágicos (Magical Towns). These designated destinations preserve the vibrant heritage of their indigenous populations while welcoming tourists into a handful of picturesque hamlets, and you can find several enchanted enclaves in the state of Nayarit.

Magical Towns truly live up to their name. They exude small town charm with big time attraction. From delectably authentic cuisine to world-class shopping to pristine beaches and people watching galore, the appeal of Nayarit has no boundaries.

Now, we know what you’re thinking (mind-reading is part of our gay magic): “It must be difficult to travel to these regally rustic hotspots, right?”

Wrong!

You can fly non-stop from Los Angeles to Puerto Vallarta in just over two hours, at which point you are perfectly poised to explore the wonders of Nayarit. So, pack your spirit of adventure and get out and proud…

Jet Set with JetBlue

North America’s best airline just got best-ier! JetBlue’s route from LAX to PVR is paved with satisfaction and convenience. Their unparalleled staff is committed to whisking you from the City of Angels to a devilishly great getaway.

Festive is their philosophy. The inaugural flight featured balloons festooning the departure gate, playful paper spectacles for passengers, and a bingo game that rewarded winners with spa packages, hotel stays and gourmet gift certificates.

JetBlue is the rare flight that you (almost) don’t want to end. No layovers or connections necessary… unless you count Cloud Nine!

Before you can say “pass the peanuts,” you’re touching down in one of the queerest cities on gawd’s gay earth: Puerto Vallarta. The Zona Romantica neighborhood is peppered with sexy saloons where go-go men shake their speedo burritos, so you simply must experience the exquisite excess of PV. But once you’ve had your fierce fill, it’s time to discover the adjacent transcendence waiting to wow you…

Nuevo Nayarit

Formerly known as Nuevo Vallarta, this sparkling city changed its name in 2022. The new handle is designed to remind travelers that as they venture just north of PV, they are leaving the state of Jalisco and embarking on a Mediterranean-esque voyage. In fact, the 190-mile-plus coastline is nicknamed Riviera

Nayarit due to its upscale accommodations and downright gorgeous scenery.

A whopping 10% of all hotel rooms in the state of Nayarit are located squarely in the sprawling seduction of Vidanta. Resorts don’t get more resplendent than this, as you will appreciate once you are consumed by its on-site golf course, beachfront perimeter, central river, and a SkyDream gondola that connects all of the above.

Call the midwife, because you’re about to get pampered!

Sample local wines made with grapes that benefit from the perfect climate: sultry temperatures countered by cooling ocean breezes. But fruit can’t have all the fun; human visitors will also love the bespoke blend of weather patterns that characterize the endlessly intoxicating aesthetics of Nayarit.

San Pancho and Sayulita

Beach, please! If you’re seeking frothy waves and even frothier beverages, curve your compass to San Pancho. Seaside eateries serve sustenance for the soul as they look out at the infinite water, so you can alternate between sipping margaritas and dipping your toes in the mighty Pacific.

San Pancho’s coastline is practically private, so you can cavort with aplomb without stepping on anyone’s sandals. While you’re in town, take in the artistry that surrounds you. Brilliant murals weave their way along the streets, guiding you to even

more eye candy: the shopping scene. This small berg’s retail stores feel more like galleries, where custom couture lines the shelves daring you to wear every gregarious garment.

Just minutes away, the surf town of Sayulita bustles with vida! Men aplenty bare their body-ody-odies in the revealing rays of señor sun. It is a playground of yay… a yayground, if you will. Go horseback riding along the mountain terrain or chart a catamaran with scantily clad hunks.

Had enough muscles? Try some mussels! The seafood in Sayulita flourishes with freshness, and its preparation is uniquely decadent while remaining true to its ingredients. For example, the Ahi Asada at Don Pedro’s looks more like filet mignon than tuna. It arrives on a mattress of mashed potatoes, seasoned with mint tomato dressing that tickles the palate and makes you yearn for each sequential bite.

The foodie landscape of Nayarit is almost as alluring as the aforementioned men, so let’s keep our tasty tour trucking to the pinnacle of peckishness…

Punta Mita

Gourmet all day in the lavishly luxurious town of Punta Mita. Sea bass is a staple of this culinary Mecca, flexing its versatility like a frat boy on Pride weekend. For example, you can enjoy it mole style or with Mexican caviar… the sea bass, not the frat boy.

Pair your fare with breathtaking sunset views that linger long after the fiery orb has nestled beyond the horizon. Punta Mita is dappled with dazzling resorts like Conrad; this Hilton property is the embodiment of refinement, but you might also recognize its contribution to trashy TV. The Bachelor rented the entire estate to film its season finale because if you’re going to make shockingly irresponsible life decisions, you might as well do so at the fanciest digs imaginable.

Every corner of Conrad shimmers with opulence. Hot tubs perch impossibly from architectural outcroppings along the hotel balcony, swim-up bars sling exotic libations so that swimmers never need to leave the comfort of their indulgence, and the beachside beckons guests to stroll the most jaw-dropping, eye-popping vistas in Nayarit.

All that walking will inspire a desire to decompress. Conrad’s indoor/outdoor spa experience is a wellness wonderland, igniting the power of tradition and innovation. An on-site Shaman guides your cleansing ritual, which includes herbal steams and nature walks. Massage professionals set up shop in thatched huts that look like elaborate human nests. On the other end of the salon spectrum, the spa facilities are stocked with enough high-end product to conjure your inner queen (or king).

Jala and Compostela

Keep that spa life steaming ahead in the quaint town of Jala. The facilities at the Nukari Quinta Boutique evoke the grandeur of Roman baths while simultaneously maintaining a discreet sense of restraint.

Ascend from the depths of the spa to the height of hedonism at Nukari’s rooftop restaurant and bar. Prime cuts of steak siz-

zle on a heating stone served at the center of your table. Look, don’t touch, and feast! Wash it all down with a hibiscus cocktail sourced from local ingredients yet mixed with global panache.

The nearby Magical Town of Compostela boasts one of the oldest churches in the continent, dating back to the 16th century. As a testament to the village’s grasp on diversity, a small gazebo opposite the church hoists a Pride banner touting the town’s queer festivities. In one 360-degree perspective, the heritage of yesteryear and the hope of tomorrow waltz in grand gay splendor.

As you explore the outskirts of Compostela, you’ll discover Café Melote, a coffee farm percolating with perfection. The aroma of roasting beans blankets the air, caressing nearby vines as they mature from green buds to cherry fruition and eventually into your simmering morning beverage.

Hawt enough for ya? Oh, it gets hawter. A quick jaunt away, you’ll find Volcán Ceboruco, an active volcano that seethes dreamy fog from its rugged topography. And when you’re ready for eruptions of a different sort, you can return to the gayborhood in Puerto Vallarta mere miles away.

Nayarit is a cacophony of comfort. It provides metropolitan services in the warm embrace of rural and suburban Mexico. And it’s all just a joyous JetBlue flight away. So dust off your passport and bust out of the ordinary because Nayarit is ready to romance you.

Great Mexican Songs to Know

Have you just returned from an awesome trip to Mexico? Or maybe you are planning one in the future. Regardless, if you are intrigued about the music produced in my country, I offer a few timeless songs to consider. Some of these may already be in your musical vocabulary, while others may be new to you. And if you are not familiar with them, don’t worry! There will be a Spotify playlist for you at the end!

“Guadalajara”

This iconic love letter to the capital city of the state of Jalisco—where mariachi originated—is a must on this list. It was composed by Pepe Guízar in the 1930s and is a standard in the mariachi repertoire. That said, it has transcended our borders with performances from the likes of Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole, and Eartha Kitt.

“El

Son de la Negra”

This mariachi song is instrumental, and research indicates that it was composed during Mexico’s Independence. However, it was popularized in the 1940s when Mexican classical composer Blas Galindo included its melody in his composition, “Sones de Mariachi.” Some theories claim that the song is dedicated to a dark-skinned lady (hence the title, Negra), and if that is the case, this shouldn’t ruffle your feathers as the ‘N’ word doesn’t have those connotations in Mexico. Other theories point to a black locomotive. Regardless, it’s a very traditional and very Mexican song.

“Un Mundo Raro”

The title of this beautiful love song composed by José Alfredo Jiménez translates to “a weird world” and describes experiencing such a desolate loss of love that the only way to cope is to deny the relationship altogether, claiming that the character of the song comes from “a weird world” where love doesn’t even exist. Chabela Vargas, who had an affair with Frida Kahlo and was close friends with the composer, does the definitive version of the song.

“Esta Tarde Vi Llover”

This beautiful pop ballad was composed by the Grammy Award-winning, prolific late composer and singer Armando Manzanero in the 60s and has become quite popular in English as “Yesterday I Heard the Rain.” Its premise is basically: I saw it rain and you came to mind. I don’t care if you like me, love me, or miss me. Just know that I saw it rain and I thought about you.

There is a sweet bilingual version out there performed by Tony Bennett and Alejandro Sanz. Do you remember Shirley Bassey singing “It’s Impossible”? That’s a Manzanero song too.

“Rata de Dos Patas”

Ah, this is a classic from the “men are scum” repertoire. This satirical song translates to “two-legged rat” and is performed by the iconic Paquita la del Barrio. There are tons of bitter love songs by men blaming women and women blaming men out there, but this is a classic due to its utterly unapologetic lyrics. There is a YouTube video out there with the English translation for the lyrics. It’s hysterical!

“El Pastor”

If you want to find out if your neighborhood’s Mexican ranchero singer is any good, just ask him to perform “El Pastor,” or “The Shepherd.” It has some of the most challenging falsetto jumps in any Mexican song. It was composed by the late Miguel Aceves Mejía, a composer and singer who happened to have an extraordinary falsetto voice.

“Alma Mía”

“Alma Mía,” or “Soul of Mine,” was composed by Maria Grever, who was born in 1885. Grever

was a woman, a composer of concert music, film music, and over 800 popular songs, many of which have transcended our border with performances by Caruso, Dinah Washington, Aretha Franklin, and Amy Winehouse. Do you know “What A Difference A Day Makes”? That’s hers. “Alma Mía” is one of the most beautiful love songs of Mexico’s traditional repertoire, and its universality makes it timeless. The recommended version is by 38-year-old Mexican singer Natalia Lafourcade, who has made it her mission to rescue traditional songs from the early 20th century and give them a beauty makeover.

And speaking of recommended versions, please feel free to head over to www.bit.ly/mexicansongs where I’ve included versions of these songs and more awesome music from Mexico for you to enjoy.

Catch up with Paco Ojeda live Monday - Saturday at 10:30 am local time on his talk show, “Coffee & Headlines,” where he shares headlines and stories for Puerto Vallarta’s local English-speaking community. facebook.com/pacoojedalive
