Res Earns 1st Team All-Ohio Honors At XC State Championships

Ian Res and Jacob Williams represented the West Geauga Wolverines Boys Cross Country Team at the OHSAA State Championships on Nov. 1 at Fortress Obetz, in Obetz, Ohio.

Res finished on the podium and First Team All-Ohio with a 6th place finish in the Div. II Boys 5K race.

Res was proud to represent the Wolverines at the State Championships as it has been an exciting post-season for him and the entire Wolverines Boys Cross Country Team.

For the Wolverines, their post season began as they won the CVC Lake Division Title at the CVC Championships on Oct. 11 at Geneva High School. Finishing individually in first and second place were Res (16:41) and senior Jacob

The Wolverines returned to the OHSAA playoffs for the first time since 2021 as they traveled to Quinn Field in Portage County to take on the Streetsboro Rockets on Oct. 31.

Although the Rockets defeated the Wolverines, 35-21, the contest was not decided until late in the fourth quarter.

Using a powerful running game which featured senior running back Miles Baker, the Wolverines dominated time of possession as their long offensive drives helped them battle to a 21-21 tie after 3 quarters.

On the Wolverines ensuing possession, just when it looked like the Wolverines would continue to drive down the field for a game-tying touchdown using a dominant run game, they attempted a long pass down the right sideline.

As the ball was in the air, Rockets senior cornerback Manny Gibson was able to get inside position on the Wolverines receiver and then made a spectacular diving interception at the Wolverines 20yard line.

However, the Rockets took an early fourth quarter lead on a 14yard touchdown run by junior running back Marcus Council as they went up 28-21 with 11:24 left in regulation.

After the turnover, the Rockets put together a long touchdown drive which effectively put the game out of reach with 1:55 remaining in the game.

With their 35-21 victory over the Wolverines, the Rockets will now face the Lake Catholic Cougars in the next round of the OHSAA playoffs on Nov. 7.

Afterwards, West Geauga Head Coach Rossi Santo said that the Rockets were able to capitalize on some big plays throughout the contest.

“The big plays killed us, the block punt killed us, they had a long (pass play) after that,” Coach Santo said. “We didn't make enough plays at the end. We had two turnovers tonight. The one was on me, it was a bad play call. Wish we could have that back, but I'm just super proud of these kids.”

To start the playoff game, the Rockets got on the scoreboard first with a 3-yard touchdown run by Council with 6:58 left in the first quarter. Council's touchdown was the first of four touchdowns on the night for the junior running back.

After the Rockets took the opening drive into the endzone, the Wolverines answered quickly with a 52-yard touchdown run by senior running back and single season rushing record holder, Miles Baker with 5:13 left in the first quarter. After Adison Cook added the extra point, the score was tied at 7-7.

Then with 3:46 left in the first quarter, the Wolverines defense came up with a takeaway when senior Ryan Mobley recovered a fumble deep in Rockets territory.

The Wolverines wasted little time capitalizing on the turnover as Miles Baker got his second touchdown of the game with 2:28 remaining in the first quarter. Baker scored on a 4-yard touchdown run. After Cook's extra point, the Wolverines led 14-7.

As Baker continued to dominate in the playoff game against the Rockets (29 carries, 195 yards and two touchdowns), he said that he tried to take a calm, relaxed approach to performing optimally.

“The way I saw it, it was just another game with a little bit of higher stakes,” said Baker. “I just try to do my thing, same as always.”

Added Coach Santo, “(Miles Baker) was outstanding. The kids a warrior. He works out every day, he watches a bunch of film.

We’re very fortunate to have Miles.”

After Baker's touchdown run to take the lead, the Rockets then came right back with a long touchdown run by Council to tie the game at 14-14 with 2:04 to play in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Rockets capitalized on a few big plays.

With 7:49 left in the second quarter, the Rockets blocked a Wolverines punt.

Pursuant to the blocked punt, the Rockets scored on the very next play when Janiere Cook connected with Manny Gibson on a 33yard touchdown pass.

With the touchdown the Rockets took a 21-14 lead with 7:40 to go in the second quarter.

But as was characteristic of the contest as a whole, after the Rockets scored quickly, the Wolverines methodically moved the ball down the field to get in position to tie the game at 21-21 heading into halftime.

However, a fumble at the Rockets oneyard line late in the second quarter ended the Wolverines drive as the Rockets clung to a 21-14 lead heading into halftime.

Starting with the ball after intermission, the Wolverines meticulously marched down the field on a 19 play, 80-yard touchdown drive which took the first 9:16 of the third quarter.

The Wolverines first drive of the second half culminated with senior running back Daegan Katz's short touchdown run to tie the game at 21-21 with 2:44 left in the third quarter.

With the defeat, the Wolverines completed a successful season in Head Coach Rossi Santo's first year at the helm.

In summarizing the Wolverines’ season, senior Miles Baker reflected on the legacy the senior class of 2026 has left on the Wolverines Football program.

“I just hope the young guys will never forget us and I hope we can lead them even when we're off the field to do bigger and better things,” said Baker. “And I hope they can one day be great leaders too.”

Williams (17:08). Also helping the Wolverines win the CVC Title were Charlie Allin (18:24.89), Joey Lubanovich (18:37.37) and Mason Starr (18:46.16) and Ryan Berdis (19.52.66),

The following week at the district meet at Madison on Oct.18 Res finished in third place with a time of 15:57.94 and Williams finished 12th with a time of 16:54.88.

At the Regional Championships at Boardman High School on Oct. 25th, both Res and Williams punched their ticket to the OHSAA State Championships.

In fact, Res narrowly missed winning the OHSAA Regional Title by just .015 seconds.

Almost winning the Regional Title was a confidence booster for Res.

“It definitely increased my confidence,” said Res. “I wasn't able to win it, I think I should have, I just made a mistake. Being able to be the top guy out of our region is a testament to that. I knew I was one of the best guys there (at Regionals). Having that confidence coming into this week was big.”

In the Regional Championship race, Res said that he briefly looked back in the final stretch, which may have briefly slowed him down by an instant.

Although Res did not win the regional title, he said that qualifying for the OHSAA State championships was a dream come true.

“I'm really proud to get down here, it's been a dream of mine since middle school,” said Res.

Res said that he got down to the state championships at Fortress Obetz the night before on Oct. 30.

The focus of Res's mental preparation the night before the race was to try to stay calm and relaxed and not think too much about the state championship race the next day.

He tried to treat the race as a normal race focusing on learning the course.

Russell Twp Hosts Community Room Open House

Residents are invited to attend the Russell Township Community Room Open House on Nov. 15, from 9 a.m. to noon. Guests can enjoy refreshments, conversation and a tour of the new facility.

The Russell Township Trustees will welcome visitors along with state Sen. Sandra O’Brien, who helped secure a $370,905 grant toward the building’s construction.

The new Community Room, now serving as a venue for public meetings, is also available for event rentals and can accommodate a variety of uses. All are encouraged to stop in and see the township’s newest community space.

“(I tried) not to get into my head too much, and try to keep it like a normal race, (and) just tell myself I had to leave it all out here and just know the course really well,” Res said.

The morning of the race, Res said that he was nervous. However, some friends came down to cheer him on and he was able to spend time with his friend before the race. Res felt that spending time with his friends was very helpful as it helped him to get in the right mindset to compete.

“I think that helped me a lot, take my mind off of it and just not think about it as much, just knowing the work was already done, I just had to execute it” Res said.

Strategically, at the start of the state championship race, Res wanted to make sure that he started quickly as he said that he believed he been starting his races too slowly throughout the season.

“I knew I had to get out a little hotter today, and I was able to do that pretty well,” said Res. “I think I was around 17th at the mile, so I got out smart and then I was able to pick up spots throughout the race.”

With a very good start, Res said that he was surprised at the two mile marker as the time was a bit slower than he anticipated.

However, Res was unfazed as he knew that the third mile would be crucial and that he just had to keep giving maximal effort until the end of the race.

“I was thinking I am just going to get as high as I can and I am not going to get beat by anyone because of a lack of trying.”

During the final stretch Res said that he wasn't thinking too much except reminding himself not to look back to see where other runners might be.

Res finished the race strong as he placed sixth with a time of 15:37.06.

“I was very proud, I left all out there,” said Res. “Couldn't really be happier with my effort. I am very happy with (my performance).”

Res's teammate senior Jacob Williams finished 89th with a time of 16:47.35.
