News New report highlights need for sector-wide environmental strategy for British furniture manufacturers Research conducted by Businesswise Solutions and the British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) showed that 75% of the industry see the management of environmental challenges as a key priority, with most feeling that the sector lacks a strategy to meet these challenges head on. The findings appear in Sentiment of the Sector & The Road To Net Zero, a 36-page insight report, which also revealed that 50% of participants said they knew what is required to achieve net zero as a sector, while all respondents said the industry lacked a strategy to achieve the target. Sentiment of the Sector & The Road To Net Zero pulled together insight and feedback from two virtual roundtable events held in March 2021, to gauge opinion on the sector’s performance under the heading of Environment, Social and Corporate Governance. Other subjects analysed during the events, and detailed in the subsequent report, include Coronavirus, Predicting Demand, Raw Materials and Logistics, as well as Labour Challenges.

BFM MD Nick Garratt

Charlotte Floate, director at Alpha Designs, was one of the event participants. She says: “Being involved in the roundtable was a great experience and it felt like we had very open, honest discussions around key topics for the

industry.” Both the roundtables and the report were facilitated by BFM associate member, Businesswise Solutions, in partnership with the BFM. BFM MD, Nick Garratt, says: “This has been a hugely interesting and informative project. “The report sets out the current and future state of British furniture manufacturing. “It provides a fascinating overview of the driving issues for the sector and, as a trade body, gives insight into areas where we can continue to support the industry in the challenging times ahead.” Frazer Durris, CEO and founder of Businesswise Solutions, adds: “What we have learned from this insight project is that businesses in the furniture manufacturing industry are passionate about doing the right thing, whilst putting innovation and agility at the centre of how they operate.” Sentiment of the Sector & The Road To Net Zero can be viewed at: www.businesswisesolutions.co.uk/ download-furniture-manufacturers-report/

Call for wood segregation to be addressed at point of production Mark Hayton, director of Egger Timberpak, shares his views on the waste wood hierarchy and the importance of segregation, stating: “We all know that the largest offtaker of recycled wood these days is the biomass industry, and that their specification allows for the inclusion of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF). Because of this, the specification for the acceptance of waste wood into the recyclers has changed. “Previously we had the segregation of wood and MDF onto our sites but now, simply due to the demand from biomass, this has resulted in the majority allowing MDF into their feedstock without segregation. However, from my point of view, this represents a significant step backwards in the effort towards greater recycling, as we should be encouraging segregation, not removing it. MDF is not a product that can be recycled – at best, it can be used within energy feedstock. “It is clear to me that the target we should all be aiming for is the waste hierarchy – reuse, recycle, recover. We should all be doing what we can to ensure waste wood that can be recycled is recycled. It will never be seen as acceptable to spend 45 years growing a tree, only to burn it in 45 seconds. We need to take more responsibility.

Mark Hayton, director of Egger Timberpak

“We all need to have a hard think about what we are doing with our waste wood. The primary route for solid wood should be to take it to an outlet that offers recycling over simply burning it. If recycled, carbon is locked away for the lifetime of the product, which can be recycled again and locked away for another lifetime, and so on, thus protecting the valuable resource of wood!

“Yes, of course this means that producers of waste need to think about segregation – but it is far easier, cheaper and uses less energy to do this at the point of production, rather than later down the supply chain, which takes more time, uses more energy and is more expensive. “This change requires a different mindset. We already do this on construction sites, with our recycling bins at home and, to a lesser extent, when we go to Household Waste Recycling Centres. “The next step is to encourage all producers of waste wood, as well as Household Waste Recycling Centres, where there is less control, to have separate bins – one for solid wood items and one for chipboard, MDF and laminate flooring. “Their staff, customers and the public then need to be encouraged to use them. This could be supported by better, more descriptive signage with pictures or actual examples, and I am sure support could be obtained for anyone wanting to run such a scheme. “Biomass has its place, and I am certainly not against it, but for me, the most important thing is to make the best use of the resources we have, and certainly not to exploit them.”

Weinig UK appoints new regional sales manager Leading woodworking machinery manufacturer, Michael Weinig (UK), has appointed Mark Smith as regional sales manager for solid wood products. Covering the North West, Midlands, Wales and South of England, Mark’s role will see him manage a team of five Weinig UK representatives, while continuing to strengthen sales and develop relationships with new and existing customers in the solid wood sector. With a career spanning almost 40 years, Mark’s industry knowledge and technical skillset made him the ideal candidate for the role. Starting his career as an engineering apprentice and moving into woodworking machinery sales in the 1980s, Mark was first introduced to Weinig’s product portfolio at Leicester Wood Technique – one of Weinig’s first machinery agents in the UK. After spending over a decade selling Weinig machinery and tooling to the UK’s woodworking industry, Mark went on to work for Wadkin, SCM and Oertli Tooling. The latter position saw him responsible for equipping high-end machines like Weinig’s Powermat moulders and industrial Conturex lines with the tooling required to fulfil customers’ unique requirements, strengthening his in-depth technical understanding and problem-solving abilities. Mark says: “I really enjoy immersing myself

in the technicalities of machinery and finding solutions to challenging manufacturing processes. I’ve worked with a wide range of brands throughout my career and as such, I have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of solid wood machines and their capabilities. I’ve also had firsthand experience selling Weinig machinery and, while the range has evolved, I understand the machines well. “After 16 years at Oertli Tooling, I’m now ready for a new challenge. I enjoy pushing myself and learning new skills. Weinig is a great opportunity for me and a chance to work with one of the industry’s leaders. They’ve always been at the top of the manufacturing tree when it comes to their solid wood machinery, and I’ve always had a great deal of admiration for the company. I’m really looking forward to building relationships and working with my team to find new and innovative solutions for our customers.” Malcolm Cuthbertson, MD of Michael Weinig (UK), adds: “Mark’s attributes are a great fit for the role of regional sales manager for solid wood products at Weinig UK, and he brings a wealth of industry experience with him. His specialist technical experience, solid wood machinery sales background and impressive knowledge of our products make him a great addition to the Weinig UK team.

Mark Smith, regional sales manager for solid wood products at Weinig UK

“At a time when we’re experiencing recordbreaking order inflow and have just had the most successful year in Weinig UK’s 33-year history, it really is an exciting time for Mark to join our growing team, and I’m thrilled to have him on board.” www.weinig.co.uk

BSW Timber acquires Bayram Timber BSW Timber, the UK’s largest integrated forestry and sawmilling group, has acquired Bayram Timber. Established over 20 years ago, Bayram is a market-leading timber processor and manufacturer, and a key supplier into the UK caravan, leisure home and garden sectors. Operating from a 17-acre site in Melton, East Yorkshire, the business has annual sales of £30m and employs over 160 people. The acquisition of Bayram will strengthen BSW’s value-added processing capabilities and further broaden BSW’s product offering and service to customers. Following the acquisition, BSW plans to undertake a significant capital investment programme in the Melton site to increase capacity and broaden the capabilities of the business. Geoff Goodwin, chairman of Bayram, says: “We are proud of what we have achieved at Bayram over the last 20 years and delighted to be selling the business to such a good home in BSW. Bayram has a strong position within the caravan and timber market, and by being a

Bayram Timber’s facility in Melton on the north bank of the Humber

valued supplier into BSW for many years, we feel this acquisition is hugely positive for our employees, customers and the whole supply chain.” Tony Hackney, CEO of BSW, adds: “We are very pleased to be strengthening our position in the value-added timber market by acquiring Bayram. The opportunity to enhance our supply chain and additionally widen our product offering is exciting. “This represents another major milestone in the growth of BSW and provides our customers with a more robust and broader range of products. We are looking forward to drawing on the expertise and

knowledge of Geoff, Chris Husband and the whole team at Bayram. I would also like to thank the Endless LLP team for their support in acquiring Bayram.” Bayram will be integrated with BSW Timber Solutions and will continue to operate from the existing site in Melton. Bayram processes 120,000m³ of machined and further-refined timber annually, with the support of 160 colleagues. Bayram supplies bespoke components for many markets including garden, caravan manufacturers, timber merchants, and decking and cladding retailers. In closing, Geoff Goodwin says: “I felt that although I am very

passionate about Bayram and its team, that it was time to encourage growth in the company, which would need further investment and resource which the BSW group can provide. “Bayram will merge into BSW Timber Solutions, under the leadership of Bruce McKay, MD. The long-established name of Bayram will remain, along with its specialised focus on the industrial end-user. In addition, I will be stepping down as chairman and undertaking a non-executive director role on the BSW Timber Solutions board, representing the Bayram business.” www.bsw.co.uk

TTF warns of major challenges ahead for timber users in Q3 2021 The Timber Trade Federation (TTF) is warning timber users that the balance between supply and demand is likely to further tighten in Q3 2021. This statement comes after recent communications from Sweden, which supplies almost half of the structural wood that is used in the UK, that its current stock levels are at their lowest in over 20 years, despite record levels of production from the Swedish sawmill industry. “As structural wood buyers will already be more than aware,” states the TTF, “the supply and demand balance for Q2 2021 means that almost all wood arriving in the UK has been presold to customers. Despite strict allocations, most buyers are already unable to purchase all the timber they want for their business.” TTF technical and trade manager Nick Boulton says: “We have great respect for our Swedish partners, who have consistently worked throughout the pandemic to meet UK wood needs – as they have done for decades. This means we need to take their statement extremely seriously. “The already-tight balance between supply and demand is already being made worse because there are insufficient HGVs available to get the wood out of UK ports and into UK customers’ yards. “As we enter July, sawmills and wood production facilities in Sweden and other European countries start to close for essential

summer maintenance, and this will significantly reduce the available supply of structural wood for the UK. “Usually during the summer shutdown period there is a significant reliance on Swedish sawmill stocks. However, if these stocks are now at their lowest level for 20 years, there will not be sufficient supply to satisfy UK structural wood demand in Q3. “Although prices have risen substantially from an artificially low point towards the end of 2019, they have now exceeded the levels of 2018, and are set to increase further as the current supply situation significantly worsens. “We have been warning since the beginning of the year that we believed Q3 would be the most difficult part of the year, and there is now sufficient information to support this assessment. “It’s important to note that timber is not alone in this scenario. As the Construction Leadership Council has made clear, demand has outpaced supply across the board, which is affecting the availability of nearly all construction products.” The TTF is now urging manufacturers and those in the timber frame and trussed rafter sectors to consider the following actions: regularly communicate with suppliers as the situation develops over the coming months; communicate early with clients regarding any potential price rises and long lead times, using the information produced by the TTF

TTF technical and trade manager, Nick Boulton

where necessary in these discussions; make sure orders are being placed well ahead of time, and plan for any potential cost increases when setting out the cost of a project – where possible seek earlier agreement of orders with clients to reflect longer lead times; and aim to work collaboratively with suppliers and be as flexible as possible with specifications and quantities required.

West Fraser knows that from little acorns big trees grow West Fraser, formerly known as Norbord UK, is a company with a proud history of investing in its workforce, and a commitment to providing employment and training opportunities for young people is an integral part of this ethos. For over 40 years, West Fraser has been giving local 16+ year-old school leavers the opportunity to complete apprenticeships at the Inverness, Cowie and South Molton sites. As is common with apprenticeships, the new starters can expect on-the-job training combined with day release to a local college. At West Fraser, apprentices train for mechanical and electrical engineering roles. At Cowie, West Fraser’s apprentices complete a 26-week programme of intensive hands-on practical training at MetTECH in Grangemouth. This is designed to give them solid, broad-based engineering skills in preparation to embark on planned periods of on-the-job training at West Fraser. The apprentices also attend Forth Valley College one day a week to complete a National Certificate (NC) in mechanical or electrical engineering, before going on to gaining their

HNC in the third and fourth years. Gordon McArthur, engineering manager at Cowie, recognises the value of the apprenticeship programme, having started in the company as an apprentice, and now overseeing the latest recruits. “The programme has served us incredibly well over the years,” he says. “Apprentices who have come through the system now make up over 50% of the maintenance/engineering workforce, and many go on to supervisory roles. In fact, three of our four maintenance supervisors at

Cowie served their apprenticeships here.” Gordon explains that the programme provides the opportunity to train apprentices to work with confidence on the complex systems and processes on-site, and is the ideal answer to the challenge of recruiting staff with the exacting skillset and experience required in such a specialist industry. For Gordon, “the best part of the programme is seeing the change in the apprentices as they grow in confidence and skill level over the four years.” Inverness also started nine new apprentices in November. After completing the four-year apprenticeship and obtaining satisfactory examination results, the majority are employed on permanent contracts. In fact, 11% of the current workforce at the Cowie facility started their careers as a West Fraser apprentice. 14 NEWS From left: Extractly’s directors, Graham Day, Jake Oldfield and William Kenyon

Extractly how it used to be! As we reported on our website back in early June, dust extraction specialists Extractly Ltd are now operating from premises on Shaw Cross Business Park in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. The office, workshop and warehousing space, which until 2019 was occupied by Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS), presents this ambitious company with the ideal base and opportunity for growth in the dust and woodwaste extraction business. Situated between Leeds and Huddersfield on the M62 corridor, and within three miles of the M1, the company’s location offers easy access to customers’ sites across the length and breadth of the UK, and is the perfect base for storage and distribution of extractionrelated products ordered via their online shop. For Extractly’s directors and key management personnel, the move to this building is also something of a homecoming, as they all worked from this building whilst employed by DCS. Between them, the team bring some 90 years’ extraction industry experience to the table, with many of those years spent working alongside

each other for DCS group companies. To satisfy demand from both professional extraction engineers and self-installers, Extractly Ltd was initially established in 2019 by sales director Jake Oldfield, as an online provider of specialist equipment and parts for all aspects of Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV). Jake is now joined on the board by former colleagues William Kenyon, as technical director, and Graham Day, who takes on the role of operations director. “DCS was always very much a family affair”, says Jake Oldfield, son and nephew respectively to former DCS directors Chris and Philip Oldfield, “and employees were always made to feel like they belonged to the DCS family.” Extractly seem to be set on continuing the tradition in a similar vein – fellow director William Kenyon’s father, Mark Kenyon, was also a director at DCS, and when Graham Day joined DCS in 1996 he was originally apprenticed to his uncles, Bob Day and Peter Day, and later went on to spend a further 20 years at DCS working alongside his cousin, Shane Day.

Prior to the company’s acquisition in 2019, Graham’s remit as installation manager for DCS included management of multiple teams of installation engineers for DCS, Ecogate, Cades and Gallito, ensuring safe working practices were adhered to on-site, dealing with all aspects of cranage and access equipment requirements, as well as having responsibility for training and certification. “After more than 20 years with DCS, I must admit the prospect of working for a much larger organisation was a little unnerving, and I thought it might be out of my comfort zone, but my initial fears were unfounded and, in the first year with Filtermist, I was very gratified to receive recognition from colleagues as runner-up in the ‘Peoples’ Choice Award’ and to be presented with the company’s ‘Positive Approach Award’. Although Extractly’s not quite in the same league yet, the role I undertake here is very similar to my previous experience with DCS”, says Graham, “and we all believe there’s a bright future ahead of us.” William (Will) Kenyon’s career at DCS

15

began in 2002. Initially employed as a service engineer, Will went on to establish himself as the company’s electronics guru and, as well as installing and maintaining electrical control gear at customers’ premises, he managed the setup and operation of the company’s control panel and instrumentation business. Will has also been instrumental in the successful integration of Ecogate® energy-saving systems into many of the UK’s leading woodworking facilities, and his capability in this technology has enabled Extractly Ltd to secure ‘Approved Ecogate Installer’ status. “It’s actually quite emotional walking back in here,” Will admits, spotting his own handwritten directives on the workshop wall. “Having put so much of me into this place over the years, it’s a really good feeling to know it’s also going to play a big part in my future once again.” A significant volume of the sales derived from Extractly’s online shop are for Nordfab’s QF® ductwork components. “We’ve developed a great working relationship with Nordfab”, says Jake Oldfield, and Extractly has been rewarded by being appointed as the official ‘Authorised Nordfab-Dealer’ for Quick-Fit® ducting equipment in the north of England. “As one of the UK’s leading suppliers we’re able to offer our customers highly competitive prices on Nordfab® products”, Jake adds, “and we’re able to provide Quick-Fit ductwork from stock, in a wide selection of diameters and lengths, as well as a range of popular QF ducting components.” The senior management team also includes former DCS colleagues: Tom Firth takes up the position of contracts manager; Kieran Redmond is projects manager; and Jordan Rickett is Extractly’s service manager. Tom Firth had worked alongside Jake at Cades and, when he discovered Extractly was in the market for a contracts engineer, he jumped at the opportunity to renew the working relationship. “When Jake first set up Extractly I asked him to let me know if he ever needed a contracts engineer … but I didn’t think we’d be working together again so soon!” In his role as contracts manager, Tom oversees extraction system installations from receipt of order through to completion. “I generally discuss project goals

with the customer,” Tom explains, “survey the site, create system designs using AutoCAD, ensure all orders for parts are placed, and schedule the work to meet the customer’s needs.” In 2007, Tom started working for Cades Ltd as a contracts engineer and, when the company was acquired by DCS in 2015, he continued to work on Cades’ accounts. In the following year his commitment was acknowledged with a promotion to contracts manager. “It was definitely a strange feeling walking back into the old building again”, Tom comments, “but I’ve got good memories from my time here with Cades and DCS. I’m sure we can recreate that again, and I would like to think I have a long future ahead of me with Extractly – I see the move to these premises as a statement of intent about where we want to be as a company in the future and, with the industry experience and knowledge we have between us, we can be a real force going forward.” As projects manager for Extractly, Kieran Redmond also makes a return to the fold after a brief spell as a technical estimator in the health sector. Having only joined DCS in 2015, Kieran is, relatively speaking, still the newbie of the group, but he’s just as keen as everyone else to be part of a growing team. “Extractly was expanding rapidly, and there was an obvious need for someone with the right industry experience to manage the production of quotations for large-scale extraction projects,” says Kieran, “and when the directors asked me if I was interested in coming back to take up my old role, it didn’t take too much persuasion!” “Customers’ quotations are being turned around much more quickly now we’ve got Kieran back on board,” adds Jake, “which obviously benefits our customers, but also allows the rest of the team to concentrate on their individual roles.” In addition to preparing quotations for installation projects, Kieran also manages the online shop, as well as keeping Extractly’s social media accounts up to date with the latest news. “It’s great to be back working with colleagues that I can also call friends,” concludes Kieran, “and I’m looking forward to playing my part in what I believe will be a successful future for Extractly.”

Back in 2008 Jordan Rickett was studying Sport and Exercise Science, but, after completing a three-year BTEC course, he switched his sights towards a more hands-on career in automotive mechanics technology. In 2014, and now a qualified mechanic, Jordan commenced work at DCS as a service engineer, and in 2018 was promoted to the position of service manager. Fast-forward another three years, and Jordan is now eager to pursue his career as service manager with the rest of the team at Extractly. “I’m really looking forward to renewing working relationships with some former customers in the woodworking industry,” says Jordan, “as well as forging new connections with future customers who are looking for the more personal, bespoke service that we’re able to provide at Extractly.” Extractly has secured ongoing arrangements as the ‘preferred supplier’ to a number of high-profile clients, including South Yorkshirebased kitchen manufacturer Omega PLC. With a 400,000ft2 facility, comprising factory, warehousing and offices, Omega has an almostongoing requirement for extraction system modifications and maintenance. As an approved Ecogate installer, Extractly is able to monitor and maintain the energy-saving extraction control system previously installed by DCS and, in addition, Extractly’s service team ensures the extraction system remains compliant with COSHH regulations, and that all LEV testing is carried out in line with HSE guidelines. “We’ve been operating on this site for the best part of 25 years, and the plant has undergone several phases of expansion over that time,” explains Omega’s engineering manager, Mick Bye. “The extraction system has had to keep pace with these developments, and we enjoyed a great working relationship with DCS in the past. We were always assured by the competent, comprehensive service they provided – the attention to detail, and the quality of work undertaken in our factory. It’s nice to know we can now rely on that same commitment, from the same team, at Extractly.” 01924 520462 info@extractly.co.uk www.extractly.co.uk

This year marks the 30th anniversary of AAG, a leading pioneer, developer and global supplier of technically advanced CNC routing, cutting and engraving solutions. Many of these have achieved benchmark status in the industries served, with the industrial woodworking, furniture production and joinery sectors representing a significant percentage of the 10,000+ machine installations that have taken place during this period.

AAG marks 30 years of growth, innovation and diversification Founded in Canada in 1991 as AXYZ Automation, the rebranded AAG (a more powerful and readily identifiable acronym for AXYZ Automation Group) now has 13 owned and operated companies throughout the world. All of these member companies are imbued with the same ethos, culture and best business practices established by the parent company. This recently led to AAG being designated ‘one of Canada’s best managed companies’, based on the group’s achievement in the primary areas of business management that included leadership,

innovation, commitment and financial acumen. The UK is home to AAG’s most successful company outside of Canada, with exponential growth and a new state-of-the-art machine assembly and supply facility set up in 2015 in Telford, Shropshire, to accommodate predicted future growth. This represented a +100% increase in the size of the original facility in Wolverhampton, thus underpinning AAG’s rapid expansion and success in the UK and Ireland and Continental Europe marketplace. This was further augmented by the acquisition by the parent company in 2019 of the North America-based

waterjet cutting technology specialist company, WARDJet, which enabled AAG to diversify into new markets, and in particular those processing materials for which traditional AXYZ CNC routing/cutting machines are not suitable. Notable product Innovations Notable product innovations include the earlier introduction of the AXYZ PANELBuilder, the more recent AXYZ Infinite and Innovator combined CNC routing/cutting systems and the latest WARDJet waterjet cutting series of machines. All of the machines are supplied with dedicated design and production software and a raft of both standard and optional productionenhancing machine tools. With the multi-purpose, large-format AXYZ Infinite and the smaller-format Innovator routing/cutting systems, AAG has comprehensively addressed the requirements of two distinct but complementary sections of the market in terms of size availability and price-to-performance. Both machines are based on the same rigid, solid-steel frame construction and lightweight aluminium processing bed, and supplied with a wide range of standard and optional machine enhancements. These include a variable-station ATC (Automatic Tool Change) system, the AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility for optimum material hold-down efficiency, and the latest

18 PROFILE >> A2MC controller with integrated AVS (AXYZ Vision System) for precise material alignment and routing/cutting accuracy. A further machine enhancement is the latest helical rack-and-pinion drive system. This incorporates a multiple gear teeth configuration that helps spread the workload more evenly, leading to faster material feed rates, quieter machine operation, reduced material wastage and ultimately a longer-than-normal machine life. AAG CNCShop division This 24/7 online ecommerce resource has now been redesigned and radically upgraded to enable owners of AXYZ and WARDJet machines

to have easier and faster access to a wider range of essential spare parts, accessories and consumables. The site also allows live interaction with specially trained AAG application engineers to ensure that only the most appropriate products are specified for a given application. The CNCShop division is supplemented with AAG’s bespoke product training courses and online videos, in addition to a financially compelling machine trade-in discount initiative, which complete the range of services available to all AAG customers. 01952 291600 www.axyz.co.uk www.wardjet.com

As they see it . . . “Since installation of an AXYZ 6010 CNC router, our business has grown rapidly, to the extent that the volume of work we now undertake necessitated the setting up of a second company.” Greg Shire – proprietor, B2B Exhibitions “As a leading manufacturer of home improvement products based primarily on plywood and OSB composite board, installation of an AXYZ 4000 CNC router enabled us to fully automate all of the work previously carried out manually. This has led to much faster turnaround times and a consequent larger customer base.” David Gallagher – MD, Connaught Conservatory Roofs “We were impressed by the speed with which our new AXYZ CNC router enabled us to achieve our objectives for business growth. In particular, the machine greatly accelerated the processing of materials such as solid oak and birch plywood that the company employs to manufacture the products supplied to the commercial furniture sector.” Neville Rae – director, Old School Fabrications “As a major importer, stockist and distributor of timber supplied to the industrial woodworking, furniture production and joinery sectors, we decided to install an AXYZ 4000 CNC router. The choice of an AXYZ router was based on our long and successful association with AAG in its original incarnation and the company’s known reputation for reliable service and for the high quality of its CNC machines.” Mike Cherry – director, W H Mason Timber Merchants “‘The AXYZ routers we have installed surpassed all our expectations in terms of increased production capacity, much faster turnaround and a consequent big increase in customers in the bespoke furniture sector.” Clem Kelly – founder and MD, Assembly Craft ‘Having been impressed by the performance and reliability of AXYZ routers installed at other scenic workshops, we purchased an AXYZ 6010 CNC router. This has enabled us to bring all previously sub-contracted routing and cutting requirements in-house, and led to better quality control and increased capacity for the 20 major stage productions undertaken by the RSC every year.” Rebecca Cubitt – head of scenic resources, Royal Shakespeare Company

Installations Ney’s ‘First Class’ Airtronic edgebander solution

David Platt, owner of First Class Bedrooms in High Wycombe, pictured beside his EBM KDP 606 edgebander from Ney

David Platt, owner of First Class Bedrooms in High Wycombe, has worked in the industry for many years, and was looking for a costeffective solution to provide a seamless panel. Up until his visit to Ney, he was under the impression that this was impossible to achieve without a large capital investment. David runs a very tight ship, and his customer base is varied, including some discerning highend clients which expect a high-quality finished product. After purchasing the EBM KDP 606 edgebander from Ney, he has found he can now service this market with greater confidence. He has also found that jobs that took several hours to complete are now done in minutes, enabling him to take on additional contracts.

David loves that he can have any edging material given the exclusive Ney Colour Match glue treatment, and says: “I have been very impressed with the machine and how Ney has gone about the whole process, from initial discussions with Ney’s sales development manager Paul Pickett, right through to the demonstrations, the purchase and the installation and aftersales service.” Ney has supplied cost-effective marketleading technological solutions for many years – however, chairman Gerd Ney believes that this unique Airtronic process has the most potential for the industry, because of the quality of finish and the impressively low costs involved. “There is no need for messy gluepots, and

“Having looked at other edgebanding machines on the market, it soon became clear to me that the EBM 606 Airtronic was clearly always going to be first choice for First Class Bedrooms”

the benefit of having no preheating time is of particular interest for customers who have a need for small batch production,” explains Gerd. Due to the location, the machine’s delivery was tricky. David explains: “The installation and training went very smoothly and I was impressed with the professional approach of the Ney service team. I have no hesitation in recommending Ney to anyone looking to invest in machinery. “Having looked at other edgebanding machines on the market, it soon became clear to me that the EBM 606 Airtronic was clearly always going to be first choice for First Class Bedrooms.” Ney can provide a spectrum range of differentcoloured samples produced on the EBM 606 Airtronic, so others can judge for themselves. Pre-Glued Edging With Matching Glue

The most cost effective solution for a seamless edge. NEY is now offering a colour matched glue when you order pre-glued edging. By matching the glue to the edging and the panel it will give a never seen before “seamless edge”, therefore greatly improving the aesthetic quality of the finish.

This unique coating process is prepared in-house at NEY.

The EBM KDP 606 Airtronic Edgebander uses hot air instead of a messy gluepot and has all the pre-milling and finishing stations required for the perfect edge. In conjunction with Airtronic edgebanding it gives the most cost effective solution for a seamless edge.

NEY AIRTRONIC edgebanding gives a seamless edge whilst also providing the best bonding criteria for MFC and MDF. This is because the coated edgeband is knurled and has an optimum adhesive gram weight which anchors deeply into the porous chipboard.

High productivity integrated line for the machining of windows The world of windows and doors is evolving in order to keep pace with the latest market trends and the new intelligent domotics systems. The windows are enhanced with evermore advanced technical solutions and specifications to make homes even more attractive, safe and comfortable. Technological innovation is once again the key to the success of industry manufacturers. Internorm knows something about this. A leading Austrian company at European level in the production of windows and doors, for which SCM developed a full line of throughfeed moulding, tenoning, drilling-routing and profiling. In practical terms, a complete high-performance system for the production of high-tech wood/ aluminium windows, like the ones responsible for placing this company at the top of the market over the last few decades. SCM has been a partner to Internorm for over 20 years. Following an initial integrated line installed in 1995 to deal with the growing production in the standard wooden window sector and, after numerous other investments aimed at the production of special windows, in

2011, the company invested in an even more advanced, integrated and high-performance line, a System 8, to anticipate quantity and quality market trends. The advantages of this line From the outset, the SCM Engineering team aimed to satisfy the need for a line dedicated to the production of doors and frames, capable of achieving maximum levels of productivity that were above standard (eight door elements and six frames per minute) and to simultaneously guarantee excellent flexibility in the case of batch one machining of elements with varying lengths, from 220 right up to 350mm. All the SCM technology supplied guarantees fully automatic set-up, with times of less than a minute. In addition, the work is further optimised and simplified by the Maestro active watch line supervisor software, which allows for the entire production process to be managed, the status of each individual machine and the entire line to be monitored in real time, and a twoway interconnection with factory IT systems.

Throughfeed moulding Higher productivity is already being achieved at this early stage of the process thanks to the Superset TX automatic throughfeed moulder, with innovative set-up system which, when using tools of different diameters, reduces the machine’s set-up time by up to 20 times. A connection transfer conveyor with buffer function and 180° tip-over function of the pieces, allows for the temporary accumulation and dispatch of pieces to the next machines as soon as they are free, thus balancing production based on their machining times and keeping them constantly powered. Tenoning Once the pieces have been moulded, they are transferred by the transfer conveyor to the Celaschi TLV tenoning area with two singlesided, symmetrical and complementary tenoning machines. These allow for tenoning on the head of the piece to be carried out, and then on the tail, after the piece has been properly positioned to guarantee the perfect length. Thanks to the use of single-sided tenoning machines, pieces

INSTALLATIONS 23

of differing lengths can be machined, just as is done in batch one production. Once tenoned, the pieces are loaded onto another connecting and buffering table and then rotated 90° for the next stage in the drillingrouting centres. Drilling-routing The Fleximat passing-through drilling and routing centre takes centre stage in this process, performing all the accessory machinings such as routing for the lock and holes for the handle, meeting and connection positions required for the next assembly stage of the window. Designed around the customer’s production requirements, Fleximat can take on different configurations, based on the number and position of the machining units, to the point that it permits simultaneous machining of the units to be drilled and routed, thus drastically reducing cycle times.

Profiling Another transporter with buffer function, essential for balancing the flow frequencies, conveys the piece to a Profitech profiling machine to externally profile door and frame elements. Numerous advantages of this SCM solution include the 12-position tool storage and highly versatile electro-spindles that allow the user to move from one profile to another without the intervention of an operator. Subsequently, another two Profitech profiling machines deal with the internal profiling of the door and frame. The frames and doors are, therefore, completed on each side and transported on a connecting bench as far as the unloading station, where they will be subject to a visual and quality inspection by the operator. The line is completed by a number of other SCM technological solutions designated to special functions or other stages of the process. This is the case – to mention just one example – of the DMC System T7 wide-belt sander with seven operating units. Thanks to its modular structure, it can provide a solution for every calibrating, sanding and structuring production requirement. Thanks to the planetary unit’s multi-directionality, excellent finishing results can be achieved that are structured and closedpore, even on window shutters. www.scmgroup.com

Retail Design Consultants partners with Homag UK for quality, performance and productivity Founded in 1998, Retail Design Consultants (RDC) is a renowned pharmacy shopfitting specialist, based in East Kilbride, Scotland. It operates on the core principles of care, commitment, collaboration and communication, providing inspirational and affordable pharmacy design solutions tailored to budget. “Although we work in other areas, our specialist niche is providing turnkey packages for pharmacies,” explains RDC MD, David Donaghue. He continues: “In recent years, pharmacies have become more automated, particularly with regard to dispensing and collection. There has also been high demand for additional dispensing workspace. Together, these factors have led to storage space in-store being at a premium. “Using the latest CAD/CAM design software, we design bespoke solutions for each client, before manufacturing all the tailormade furniture at our facility and then installing it at

the pharmacy. “Many pharmacies are now 24/7 operations, so it is vitally important that when we install a solution, we minimise disruption to their business. The pandemic has added further challenges for us, but the processes we have developed enable us to deliver projects with minimal interruption for the pharmacy. Investing in the latest machinery “The individual nature of the furniture we produce, and the ever-decreasing lead times, led us to look at how we could improve our production processes. Several of our machines, including the edgebander and saw, were getting long in the tooth. “The edgebander in particular is a key machine for us, and not only had it become somewhat temperamental, but also the finish quality of the processed panels needed to be better. We were experiencing similar problems with the beam saw, which was also limited by

ageing control software. “Our search for replacements began by talking to John Mackay from AWMS. John has been a trusted supplier for many years and is the Homag representative for our area. We had invested in a Homag BHX 050 vertical CNC five years earlier and were very impressed with the performance and quality it consistently delivered. “Over the years, John has gained an in-depth understanding of our business, so we were confident he would put together considered proposals for the Homag edgebanders and beam saws. We wanted solutions that would not only deliver the quality and reliability we were looking for, but would also future-proof the business in terms of likely productivity increases and the need to be able to take advantage of any software advances. Specifying the right machines “There were several considerations that

25

“Homag’s Sawteq B-130 beam saw has made a significant difference to our production – it is fast, reliable, and has a small footprint for such a powerful machine” would affect our decision on which models to order. Our 14,000ft2 facility is compact and so machine footprint was a significant factor, as was our desire to invest in machines that would grow with our business. “John gave us a couple of options for the saw and four options for the edgebander. Initially, we were leaning towards the lower specification models – listening to John, however, we realised that if we invested in higher-specification models now, the long-term payback was potentially far greater. “After careful deliberation we settled on the Homag Sawteq B-130 and the Edgeteq S-240 models. We had seen these machines in action at the Homag showroom in Castle Donington

and also at exhibitions. The Homag brand and reputation alone gave us confidence in our decision, but we were also influenced by the service support, spare parts availability, and the peace of mind that come with partnering with the market leader. Esgeteq S-240 edgebander and Sawteq B-130 beam saw “With the majority of our products being panelbased, the edgebander is a critical piece of kit for us. The quality of finish and performance of this Homag edgebander are first class. When the panels come off the edgebander there is no need for any hand finishing, they are good to go to the next stage of production. “The Edgeteq has improved productivity in the machine shop by over +30%, and downtime is virtually a thing of the past. Set-up times are quick and easy, the trimming tools are excellent, and the machine handles a wide variety of edge materials, further improving our production flexibility. “Homag’s Sawteq B-130 beam saw has made a significant difference to our production – it is fast, reliable, and has a small footprint for

such a powerful machine. The control software (CADmatic 5) is easy and intuitive to use, and will enable us to take advantage of more advanced software applications (such as tapio) in the future. Key benefits “The benefits these new Homag machines have brought to our business are considerable. We have seen significant reductions in downtime, waste and labour costs, with corresponding increases in productivity and finish quality. “What’s more, the Homag name has boosted our reputation as a company that supplies the highest-quality products. As a consequence, we are now able to take on more subcontract work in addition to the bespoke pharmacy projects we have become well-known for,” concludes David Donaghue. CaberWood MDF Pro – the ideal panel for beautiful handmade kitchens When John Penny of JP Joinery was asked by a client to design, build and install a ‘wow’ bespoke kitchen, the one product element he knew he would be utilising was West Fraser’s CaberWood MDF. “This was my first full, bespoke kitchen project,” says John, “and it presented me with some challenges.” John’s client is based in Kirkliston, a small town to the west of Edinburgh, and Covid-19 lockdown restrictions added challenges to the installation. John sourced West Fraser’s CaberWood MDF Pro MR from MGM Timber branches in Edinburgh and prepared the door and drawer fronts in his workshop. “I have tried a few brands of MDF but have found CaberWood MDF Pro MR to be the best choice for a perfect finish,” he says. “I sprayed the MDF with a water-based paint which contains a full chemical hardener. This counters any fibre-raising which happens, to varying degrees, with all MDF but, when experimenting with different brands, I have always found the West Fraser board to be the best.” CaberWood MDF Pro MR is moisture resistant so particularly suitable for kitchens. “I used a mix of 9-, 18- and 22mm-thick MDF for the variety of units – almost 40 in total – and, as always, found the boards easy to work with,” says John. “The quality is always consistent, which is important, especially on such a large project. It doesn’t splinter or chip, meaning there’s very little waste. Compared with other brands I’ve used, CaberWood is really well priced too!” Needless to say, the client was delighted with the end result, and John will be using CaberWood MDF on all his future kitchen projects. Merenda expands product line and rebrands – positioning the family business for future growth Merenda, a leading manufacturer of wood veneer component products for the furniture industry, based in Manorhamilton, Co Leitrim, has rebranded, ahead of launching a new suite of products which will come to market over the next 12 months: Merenda Surface, which launched in May, will offer superior veneer surfaces and design solutions to the interior fit-out industry; Merenda Edge, launching in September, will support a new ecommerce edgebanding platform for the Irish furniture industry; and Merenda Touch, a unique innovation in wood veneer, will break exciting new ground for the company when launched later in the year. As part of the new suite of products, Merenda also launched a revised strategy designed to align the company’s brand identity with its long-term strategic goals — to capitalise on the opportunities arising within the exponentially growing Irish and UK furniture industry and from the coming fourth industrial revolution. The new strategy, which reflects Merenda’s 30year history as a family business, will connect and unify the expanded product and service offer. Merenda currently exports to 10 countries across the world and is an important rural employer, employing 20 at its Manorhamilton facility. The rebrand launch is the beginning of an ambitious programme initiated by MD Ronan

Haslette, to make Merenda the best-managed family business in Ireland by 2024. Speaking at the launch, Ronan said: “This year marks the beginning of a new era for Merenda. We have a broader product and service offering, plus innovative ways of delivering this to our valued customers. Additionally, our new branding portrays a contemporary and modern vision, which reflects our new products. The Covid pandemic has highlighted our team’s resilience. With superb support from Enterprise Ireland throughout the pandemic and indeed before

it, I believe Merenda, with our new identity and strategy, is ready for the future.” Special guest at the rebrand launch, Martin McVicar, MD, Combilift, added: “Ronan and the Merenda team have unveiled an ambitious plan, an exciting, refreshed product line combined with a new look to their brand that will communicate that they are brand leaders.

This will undoubtedly support Merenda’s development as they continue to scale their business.” Merenda’s lead designer, Roscoe Holt, who played a key role in developing the new brand image, explained: “We wanted to create something that honoured where we came from, but proudly showed where we want to take Merenda. We have been bringing design thinking to the forefront of how we face challenges as an organisation, and a new logo starts the process of bringing that designled approach to our industry.” Aidan McKenna, regional director, Enterprise Ireland, concluded: “Covid-19 impacted many businesses across Ireland, both rural and urban. To witness Ronan and his team at Merenda emerging from the pandemic in a strong position, with an ambition and plan to grow, is hugely satisfying. Indigenous companies like Merenda are the backbone of our economy and the lifeblood of rural Ireland. We wish Merenda every success and look forward to working with Ronan and the team in the years to come.” www.merenda.com

Adhesives Edgebanding with PUR and EVA cartridge adhesives Kenyon Group supplies some of the best hot melt adhesives on the market, especially when it come to edgebanding, which has been its focus point for many years. As new products come onto the market, one adhesive range has remained unchanged, standing the test of time – and for good reasons. Offering both EVA and PUR technologies, Henkel’s Technomelt Dorus

HKP range of hotmelt adhesive cartridges provides exceptional gluing performance and an easy-to-use option for Holz-Her edgebanders. Having been specifically designed for Holz-Her edgebanders, they are compatible for use on all these machines with feed-rates from 10m/min. With more and more companies choosing PURHM adhesives for the many performance benefits they provide, Technomelt Dorus

PUR/EVA cartridge adhesives for Holz-Her edgebanders

HKP27 PUR has quickly become a key choice for Holz-Her edgebanders, making it the go-to adhesive for kitchen, door, cubicle and bathroom furniture manufacture, allowing a high degree of moisture and heat resistance to be achieved. Technomelt Dorus HKP27 PUR also provides many additional benefits such as cold flexibility resistance, high initial strength and very tight joints, which can achieve invisible glue lines.

41

Henkel Technomelt 270/7 PUR granules

Technomelt Dorus HKP 20 and 25

Where high moisture or heat resistance is not required, for example in bedroom furniture, EVA adhesives are the ideal choice for companies. The Technomelt Dorus HKP range has an exceptional offering, with Technomelt Dorus HKP20 and Technomelt Dorus HKP25 – between these two all the bases are covered, helping achieve the production line finishes that are expected in today’s competitive markets. There is Technomelt Dorus HKP 20, an unfilled, transparent, EVA edgebanding hotmelt for HolzHer equipment allowing for thinner coat weights and high glue mileage, making this a premium EVA grade. Technomelt Dorus HKP 25 is a filled EVA edgebanding hotmelt for Holz-Her equipment, available in a range of colours (natural, white, brown and black), so no matter what edging colour has been decided upon, the adhesive options available will have it covered. Then there is Technomelt Cleaner 2, a blue cleaning agent for all polyurethane (PUR) hotmelts in the uncured state.

Holz-Her edgebanders are not just limited to cartridge adhesives. With clever additions such as the hopper system, which can be attached to the machines, it allows for the use of both EVA and PUR granules. This clever and innovative addition provides companies access to other high-performance grades from the range, such as Technomelt Dorus KS 351 unfilled edgebanding or Technomelt PUR 270/7 G (granules), both of which are recognised for their clean running and outstanding gluing performance. The Henkel name is quite rightly associated with quality and market-leading technologies, and this does not purely apply to its adhesives, but also to its extensive range of hotmelt cleaners, which cover everything from surface cleaning through to thorough system/application equipment cleaning. Given that an effective cleaning process can make all the difference to meeting deadlines, maximising output and achieving daily goals, Kenyon Group is here to help set users on the right path and ensure they are getting the most out of their day.

Having recognised the gap in the market, Henkel made the decision to manufacture its Premium PUR grade – the tried, tested and proven Technomelt 270/7 – in a granular form, allowing companies to run the PUR adhesive on their existing edgebanding lines without the outlay and hassle of purchasing new equipment. This has proved very successful, providing easy access to PUR technology for every company, opening the door to what can be achieved with PUR and increasing the quality of the finished goods. Henkel PUR granules make gluing easy, with their ability to be used on customers’ existing edgebanding lines – convenient, flexible, and providing cost-saving advantages. Technomelt PUR 270/7 is supplied in 12kg cartons, with each carton containing 16 x 750g individual foil packs of PUR granules. This provides a cost-effective option for middle-to-low volume users, by allowing them to control the amount of adhesive being used against their scheduled volume of work. Foil packs that have been opened can be wrapped and taped and will be good for around 48 hours, reducing wastage and saving money. PUR adhesives and good housekeeping When it comes to cleaning, as with any PUR adhesive, a wax-based cleaner such as Technomelt Cleaner 2 is required to prevent the adhesive from cross-linking and curing within the machine. With the larger 2kg blocks, normally one or two cleaning slugs will have to be purged through the system, to clean it down of any remaining PUR within it. Henkel’s PUR granules provide users with the ability to gauge the adhesive level within the glue pot throughout the day and run it down towards the end of the shift, meaning there is very little PUR adhesive left in the glue pot prior to cleaning. Use the recommended cleaner for Henkel PUR granules (Technomelt Cleaner 4), which is supplied in a blue granule form, and can be put directly into the glue pot. Normally, half to a full cup will be sufficient. This reduces cleaning times and allows for a quick start-up the following morning. Kenyon is proud to be a Henkel Premium Partner, covering furniture and building components.

You can keep calm … if you are a Taka customer In case you did not now, the main raw materials for HMPUR (reactive polyurethane) adhesives are mainly polyesters and isocyanate. Polyesters are the main ingredient that gives the adhesive their essential characteristics such as initial bond strength, open time, resistance to weathering conditions and viscosity, as well as the melting and application temperature. Taka’s in-house production of polyesters is therefore a strategic and extremely valuable capability in today’s unsettled market, and therefore a good choice to customers for several reasons – first, to ensure the high performance of the adhesive, then to ensure stability, quality, and tolerance of each batch. This allows Taka to give an immediate

response in the development of new adhesives with tailor-made characteristics for individual customers. Finally, this allows Taka to thrive through times of limited availability of raw materials while most of the market fights for the raw materials that are left. Taka’s customers have better continuity of supply and can concentrate on their business knowing they are being taken care of with their adhesive needs. From the very beginning of Taka’s production, the business made a strategic choice to manufacture its own raw materials (polyesters), by immediately creating plants dedicated to the production of basic polyesters used in the production of polyurethane hotmelts. Taka’s vision has proved particularly useful at this time, when

the building and furniture markets are experiencing unprecedented increases in demands for adhesives, timber, plastics, etc. Taka has stock raw materials to serve its current customer base, and can even increase it further. Thanks to Taka’s strategic choices and the investments that Taka has made and will continue to make, it is able to maintain constant production and supply of its products to customers all over the world, without exception. Taka says that particular attention is paid to the UK market, which has always been an extremely important one. Taka has already been present within the UPVc industry for 15 years and boasts considerable market share thanks to Mike Dean at Adhesive Solutions. Taka is steadily growing the woodworking/furniture market

thanks to its co-operation with Brit-Ad, and has two distribution warehouses to cover both of these important industries. Taka also has a UK-based technician for the installation of machinery and application of the adhesives, who has 30 years’ experience within the profile-wrapping industry. Free from the worries of production, Taka can concentrate on the research and development of new adhesives, new solutions, and technical application advice. Taka always remains close to the customer, to improve processes and satisfy requests for the development of customised products. A variety of additionally available pointed, wide and dowel nozzles can be used for particularly precise applications. To store the bench glue, Ostermann suggests using the Pfohl GluePort. It offers a proper place for the glue bottle and keeps the glue from drying out. The climate container of the GluePort is filled with 150ml of water and conveys humidity to the glue tip via a foam inlay. Even slightly dried-out tips will open up again after some time in the port. LARGE-SCALE APPLICATIONS – ECONOMICAL AND EASY The glue applicator from Pfohl has proven a useful asset for larger surfaces. The sturdy hand tool has an integrated glue container from which the liquid glue is applied to the workpiece via an exchangeable roller. The tool is supplied with a stand and a rubber roller, and available in different widths. If you want to apply the glue to uneven or highly absorbent surfaces, it is best to use the Pfohl glue spreader. It has two differently serrated sides and an integrated glue container. Sanding & abrasives A perfect duo – sanders and dust extractors

Any professional tradesperson knows that a key to producing a quality job is in the preparation. If a surface is perfectly prepped, then applying oils, varnishing or paint becomes easier, and there is less need for reworking. And there are two key products that makes this incredibly easy – a sander and dust extraction. Using a sander in combination with a mobile dust extractor, like the Festool CTM MIDI, has multiple benefits. By extracting the dust produced when sanding at the source, the working environment is cleaner. Sanding produces fine dust that can quickly enter the lungs, pairing a sander with a dust extractor enables one to protect one’s health by working dust-free. It also means there less time spent on cleaning up and less dust around, making the job easier. When working in residential properties using a sander

47

with a dust extractor, this hugely benefits the client – with less dust there is less of an impact on their home. Pairing the right sander with a dust extractor vastly improves the sander’s efficiency. Festool sanders are specifically designed to work with a dust extractor. The ETSC 125 sander, for example, has a bayonet fitting system that enables it to be connected securely to a Festool dust extractor or to a long-life dust collection bag for more mobile working. Features on the sanders like MultiJetstream help achieve maximum dust extraction and therefore maximum sanding performance. There are obviously other elements of a sander to consider, depending on the quality of the surface and the result that needs to be achieved. In door restoration, for example, one may want to lightly sand the door and keep it free from circular or ridged sanding marks. The Festool ETSC 125 eccentric sander has a

combined oscillating and rotary motion, which minimises sanding marks. And the small sanding stroke of 2mm makes it ideal for fine sanding. In contrast, longer sanding strokes of 5-7mm allows the user to remove a large amount of material for coarse sanding. So, if one needs to remove large amounts of layered paint and varnish, a sander with a forced eccentric rotation like the ROTEX RO 150, would enable them to do this quickly. The gear unit, along with the 5mm sanding stroke, considerably increases the material removal rate. With proper preparation being key to delivering professional results, why would one not make the preparation stage of their job as simple and efficient as possible? With a system approach that combines the right sander and dust extractor, preparation can be executed easily. Safety is in your hands Over the past decade or so, there has been a significant change in the way tools have been made to meet the needs and requirements of the user. This has led to a large amount of investment in R&D by tool manufacturers to design and develop durable products that can deliver an efficient overall process and a high-quality finish on a variety of surfaces, while protecting users against the dangers of Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) and dust particles. HAVS, which affects the blood vessels, nerves, muscles, and joints of the hand, wrist and arm, is becoming a bigger issue for workers as it is a condition they cannot see or are maybe unaware of that is affecting them until it is too late. The reason for this is basically that each worker may have different tolerances for the amount of vibrations they can handle or they may not realise there is a problem until they try a different tool or do not use their own one for a while.

For Mirka, the fight against HAVS starts with putting the emphasis back on the user, and this has been achieved with the introduction of the myMirka app (applicable in the Bluetooth-enabled tools within the Mirka product range). The app provides the end-user with the vibration levels from the tool on a colour-graded scale, and advises on how to lower the vibration if required. Additionally, the speed the tool is being used at can be visualised in a real-time graph. Furthermore, if more detail is required, there is an in-app purchase that tracks the daily vibration levels in relation to European standards for a comparable scale of the pressures being put through users’ joints on a daily basis, which will allow the business to see how the tools are being used and potentially assist in the implementation of measures to protect the workers. The app is available to download through Google App and Apple App stores. Extraction systems may seem like they take up a lot of space,

Mirka’s top tips to achieving a dust-free environment and to protect yourself from HAVS 1. An increase in vibration can cause damage to the tool, so be aware that any variation in the weight of pad other than when using P180 paper discs can cause the machine to vibrate more. 2. Always use a genuine Mirka backing pad on Mirka tools, as it has been specifically designed for certain machines (a DEROS/PROS 150mm backing pad is engineered to weigh exactly 130gms). However, if one uses a generic non Mirka pad it may alter the vibration of the tool and, in turn, cause damage to the bearing and other aspects of the tool. Mirka tools returned with nonMirka pads fitted are not covered by the Mirka warranty. 3. If one intends to use an interface pad (5mm/10mm), one should remove the backing pad and insert the grub screw that comes in the box with the tool into the remaining threaded hole beneath the pad. This will counterbalance the weight of the interface pad and reduce the vibration of the tool when in use. 4. The grub screw should also be used if coarse or heavy weight discs (P40/60 etc) are on the sander. 5. Using a pad saver will protect the backing pad from wear. However, if used when sanding plaster it often reduces the efficiency of the dust extraction. If P80 to P120 discs are used with a pad saver, Mirka recommends the insertion of the grub screw. 6. Ensure that the product is regularly serviced for optimum performance. 7. Make sure the fleece bag in the mobile extraction unit is not full and does not have any rips or holes. If it does, replace it. 8. Periodically remove and clean the motor filter. This can be done by placing it in a bag and gently knocking the dust out of the filter. Or better still, use another vacuum or extractor to clean the filter. Once it is clean, replace the filter in the machine. 9. Make sure the seal between the tank and upper section of the extractor is clean and not damaged.

but dust particles can be a major health issue for employees and could possibly lead to respiratory problems. This is why more and more businesses and single users are investing in systems to allow them to work in a dust-free work environment. Laboratory tests have shown that without dust extraction, dust in the air per kg of sanded material is over 200g/kg, and dust on surrounding surfaces is almost 800g/kg. These may not seem like large quantities, but when they accumulate over a long period, they could potentially turn into both a fire and health hazard for the business.

However, investment in a suitable mobile extraction system is not a short-term injection of the business’ cash, it should be viewed as a longterm commitment, so that it can provide an effective solution for a cleaner workspace, a reduction in prepping and tidying up at the end of the day, and the potential dust contamination of other tools and surfaces. The smaller systems are more often used in workspaces because they are equipped with a local air supply and extraction, and are easy to move and store. 01908 866100 www.mirka.com

>> MB Maschinenbau prides itself in offering solutions to problems – rather than just a sanding machine! The company has realised that one area which is often overlooked is the need to clean products after sanding and prior to further processing, painting, lacquering or foil application. The ROBA Profi Clean and ROBA Anti Dust machine series have been designed to tackle these problems, and have proved themselves repeatedly. ROBA Anti Dust is suitable for the following operation areas: cleaning of furniture and joinery parts before lacquer application; cleaning of parts furniture and joinery before lamination; and the cleaning of furniture and joinery parts before packing. The Roba Anti Dust machine can be a standalone machine, or for high volume can be integrated into a lacquering line. The Anti Dust is equipped with cleaning heads working across and along the workpiece, and these units ensure that the part is cleaned completely, even in complicated contours. Special brushes collect the dust, ionisation bars reduce static loads, and a blower system finishes the cleaning process. The ROBA Profi Clean is suitable for backside cleaning of thermo-foiled doors, and the cleaning of laminated furniture parts. The ROBA Profi Clean machine guarantees high productivity cleaning of glue residue on the backside of thermo-foiled doors. This solution can handle a complete batch of doors coming out of a membrane press.

During this operation, the backside of the door gets cleaned of glue residues and simultaneously all four edges are slightly eased without the risk of delamination. This is ensured by two or four clockwise and counterclockwise rotating cleaning drums, which are equipped with special cotton brushes. Therefore, the parts do not require any further

processing and can be forwarded directly for packaging. MB manufactures sanding and cleaning machines, and the full range can be viewed on its website, https://www.mb-maschinenbau.de/ en/produkte/woodworking/ 01235531700 john.penny@btconnect.com

Panel processing Homag Sawteq B-300 drives production capabilities and efficiencies at Excel Laminating

55

Based in East Yorkshire, Excel Laminating is a leading UK’ supplier of raw, laminated and bonded sheet materials to the offsite construction industry. The company has seen a noticeable increase in its manufacturing efficiency and capability following its recent acquisition of Homag’s Sawteq B-300 – a technologically advanced, high-performance panel dividing saw. Excel Laminating is an independent, familyrun business, established in 1997. It operates from a modern 80,000ft2 manufacturing facility in Hull. As an innovation- driven business, one of Excel’s most successful products is CladEX. This is an external cladding solution designed to improve the thermal efficiency of a building while also delivering a high-quality contemporary finish. CladEX comes in a wide range of finishes and can be used for modular new builds or as an over-cladding in refurbishment projects. In addition, Excel works closely with the UK’s premier bathroom and shower manufacturers. It delivers a range of British Gypsum products to them daily on a JIT basis. These are cut to size, with CNC-created apertures, labelled and packed in construction order, with zero waste. It also supplies panels for the underfloor heating market, where demand has surged for this environmentally friendly heating format. Commenting on the selection process for the new beam saw, Jeff Thomas, MD at Excel Laminating, says: “Before purchasing the new panel dividing saw we spent time scoping out

requirements. We needed to ensure that the saw would be able to meet the challenging demands of processing and cutting gypsum plasterboard. Of particular concern was the high level of dust generated when cutting the boards. “As part of the selection process, I visited a large caravan manufacturer based in Hull, where I was given a demonstration of the Homag saw in operation. The owner of the caravan company spoke glowingly about the build quality of the Homag machine and was impressed with the company’s technical and after-sales support. “To complete due diligence, we evaluated other brands who supply panel dividing saws. We found, however, that Homag’s product was head and shoulders above the competition in terms of build quality, engineering excellence and machining optimisation. “During our product investigations, we also received some good feedback about the whole buying process from another company that had recently bought equipment from Homag. This gave us added confidence that Homag would provide the best product and service for our challenging needs. “In addition to this, for several years now we’ve kept in touch with Homag’s representative, Alan Betteridge. Consequently, Alan is aware that we cut a particular type of board product which is challenging for any machinery. In our consultations, we discussed the specific adjustments and refinements we needed the

panel dividing saw to deliver, as it was vital to ensure it had the capabilities for our very particular needs. “The Sawteq B-300 we invested in from Homag copes superbly with the specific challenges of the board products we process. It has a great extraction system that keeps waste away from the finished product, as well as maintaining the machine and keeping its surrounding area sparkling clean. The saw is also extremely efficient at handling complicated cutting lists, and is quiet and easy to operate. “I am not a machinist, yet I was able to operate the saw with just 30 minutes of training. This ease of operation has enabled us to have a team of people who can run the saw under supervision, switching from other roles as and when required – something we couldn’t do before.” Enhanced efficiency, competencies and customer acquisitions Commenting on the efficiency of Homag’s Sawteq B-300, Jeff goes on to say: “There are some jobs which we’re getting through in half the time using the Sawteq B-300. We have also attracted new customers since investing in the new panel dividing saw. “For example, we have one large contract we’re handling now which previously, without the Homag saw, we would have struggled to deliver. I am delighted to say that the acquisition of the new Homag saw has provided us with a marked improvement in both our overall efficiency and competencies,” concludes Jeff. Holz-Her’s new Sprint 1329 multi-edgebander

Why walk when you can sprint? The need for speed needs little explanation in the furniture manufacturing industry. With demanding production cycles, the pursuit of shorter lead times and a growing trend for multiple profile technology, it can be a tricky balancing act for any company – large or small – to meet short production times while maintaining a high level of quality. So, what is the solution? Holz-Her’s new Sprint 1329 multi-edgebander features a wealth of intelligent technology and play-free mechanical systems that guarantee quick and simple set-up, flexible machining and 100% repetition accuracy. Like its predecessors, the latest addition to the Sprint range has been designed for the mediumto-large manufacturer that demands high-speed manufacturing, and this range certainly lives up to its name. It offers an infinitely variable feed rate from 1018m/min, and comes equipped with integrated multi-function milling technology, including multiple stage tools that allow the Sprint to machine various radii or applications with a 45° bevel at the touch of a button – a feature first designed for Holz-Her’s industrial, double-shift machines. This means there is no need to stop production and change tools when switching between materials, and the result is a significant reduction in the overall set-up time needed when working on multiple projects. fa.s.t technology has also been integrated into the new facelift model to guarantee a continuous workflow. The clever technology enables the user to run different machining processes at the same time, making it possible to switch between first pass and corner-

rounding processes without the need for the panel to exit the machine first. An automatic locking roller also communicates with the process control to eliminate any risk of misfeeding the panel and ensure minimal workpiece intervals for high productivity. Angelo Amico, product manager and edgebanding specialist at Holz-Her, says: “Manufacturers don’t have time to wait for a panel to exit the machine before they’re able to move to the next program or operation, and with

Angelo Amico, product manager and edgebanding specialist at Holz-Her

fa.s.t, you don’t have to wait. You now have the ability to execute a program while the first panel is in the machine and, thanks to process control, the machine won’t move into position until it’s safe to do so. “This takes away stopping times, de-skills the operation as the machine controls when it is safe to move the components into place, and ultimately makes the process more efficient. As there is no need to restart the operation, it can increase production speed by +50%.”

57

The new Sprint model also includes Intelligent Tool Correction. With this the user can make fine adjustments to the profiling in relation to the edging, using the machine’s 18.5in touchscreen. Angelo says: “It requires a certain level of skill and an eye for detail to make these adjustments manually, not to mention sufficient time to carry out the changes. Now, if the operator wants to make a fine adjustment between 0.1–0.01mm, the relationship of the cutter to the plastic edging on the screen is easy to see. The servos are so accurate that they count 1000 steps per millimetre.” The Sprint’s smart, time-saving features do not stop there. It also comes with HolzHer’s intelligent iTronic and Glu Jet system as standard. The fully automatic functions of iTronic facilitate adaptive cutting, precise pressures to the pressing station and automatic glue quantity control. Teamed with the thin film technology of the Glu Jet system, it provides operators with a guaranteed, repeatable zero glue line on solid wood, melamine, HPL, real wood coil and veneer edging when using PUR. In addition to this, the Sprint can also be built with a full complement of sprayers, the option of a pre- and post-tracing surface scraper, nesting

Holz-Her’s multi-tool technology

shoes, an air flotation in-feed table, an infra-red edge heater and a motorised infeed fence. It can also come equipped with a barcode scanner to streamline an operation. Angelo adds: “Holz-Her has been manufacturing edgebanders for over 50 years. We understand what our industry needs and we create solutions for the changing market. The Sprint range was first launched in 1999 and it’s a bestseller for us, equating to 30% of all our production. And it is clear to see why it is so popular. It’s an intelligent solution that works just

as effectively with batch-one manufacturing as it does when integrated into full-shift working. Teamed with Holz-Her’s patented Glu-Jet system and iTronic, it is a highly dynamic machine that meets the demand for material variety. It really is a solution in a box that is ready to use when you are – a universal solution for those looking for a high-performance edgebander.” For a one-to-one demonstration at Holz-Her’s Abingdon showroom, call 01235 557600 or visit the company’s website. www.holzher.co.uk

Products Quickfit TL5 dowels combine versatility with performance The new and innovative Quickfit TL5 Full Metal Jacket dowels from cabinet hardware expert Titus, provide strong, reliable joints in all types of wooden materials, including MDF, chipboard and solid wood. This means that it is no longer necessary to use different dowels for different materials, or to reinforce joints by adding supplementary wooden dowels.

In addition, the new dowels – which are part of the Titus’ Engineered for Your Kitchen programme – offer fast, tool-free insertion, reducing assembly time by up to -50% for home-assembled furniture. Alternatively, for maximum efficiency in volume production applications, they can be inserted automatically using Titus FastFit machines. Quickfit TL5 dowels, which are used in conjunction with Titus Cam5000 cams, incorporate an expanding steel sleeve that provides high resistance to torsion and pull-out. This ensures rigid furniture construction, with complete freedom from the tendency for joints to loosen over time. Furniture using the dowels can also be disassembled and reassembled repeatedly without compromising joint integrity.

Positive and reliable The dowels are designed for insertion into a 5mm hole and, on insertion, they positively and reliably engage with the hole, greatly simplifying subsequent assembly steps. When edge inserted, the dowels immediately engage with the cam and remain securely positioned until the cam is tightened. A further key feature is that the special design of the dowel head adopted for these innovative and time-saving products means that the performance of Quickfit

TL5 dowels is unaffected by edge-to-holecentre (ETHC) tolerances of up to ±1mm. Therefore, they easily accommodate not only drilling inconsistencies, but also the natural movement of wooden panels. The dowels can be supplied in versions to suit ETHC dimensions of 24 and 34mm. The required hole diameter for the face board is 5mm, and for the edge board 8mm. The minimum hole depth in the face board is 12.5mm. www.titusplus.com

Wood veneer edgings from Ostermann Ostermann supplies carpenters/ cabinetmakers with one of Europe’s largest ranges of edgings. In addition to a growing range of plastic edgings, a unique selection of wood veneer edgings has emerged over the past 30 years. For the expert processing of these edgings, there are a number of services available, such as pre-coating with hotmelt adhesive, coating for modern zero bondline technologies, or customised slitting. Wood veneer furniture is timelessly classic. Its fine surface stands for a sophisticated elegance and a sense of luxury in modern interior design. Compared with solid wood furniture, the lower price and sustainable use of natural resources present clear benefits. At Ostermann, one will find a range of wood veneer and real wood edgings which is probably unique in Europe, and offers edgings in constant high quality for the construction of exceptional wood-veneered furniture, tailored to customers’ requests. For more information, enter the search item ‘#veneer’ on Ostermann’ website, www.ostermann.eu.

Classic woods and rare beauties Oak veneer edgings constitute a significant part of the Ostermann range. There are almost 20 different variants available, of European and American origin, and with intricate finishes and colours. Besides classic European timber, the vast range comprises many extraordinary wood veneer edgings made of the likes of zebrano, bamboo, olive and macassar. Always on the edge – primer A consistently high product quality is ensured through many years of co-operation with established European suppliers. All 1-, 2- and 3mm-thick wood veneer edgings are coated with a primer, which facilitates processing, improves the edging’s bond and reduces the amount of glue needed. Which thickness is preferred? Many edgings are available in three different thicknesses, enabling the user to perfectly adjust them to their surface veneer. 1mm edgings have two layers, 2mm edgings four, and 3mm edgings six individual layers of veneer. Thin

veneer consists of a single layer of veneer, and is strengthened by a nonwoven at the reverse side. Pre-coatings and special widths Ostermann wood veneer edgings can be processed with standard hotmelt adhesives on edgebanding machines, or manually with white glues. One can obtain edgings pre-coated with hotmelt adhesive or with an individual functional layer for processing with zero bondline technologies, upon request. If dimensions other than the standard widths of 24, 33 and 43mm are needed, Ostermann will cut the edgings to the desired widths. Do not search for it, find it! In order to find the right wood veneer edging within the wide range, simply go to the page with real wood edgings in the Ostermann online shop. In the faceted navigation on the left, select exactly the wood type required, and all available wood veneer edgings will appear. 01905 793550 s.parsons@ostermann.eu www.ostermann.eu

New anti-viral leather launched JBS Couros already supplies high-quality, sustainably produced leather to key players in the automotive, furniture and upholstery markets in Asia, Europe, and North America, in addition to major manufacturers of footwear and leather goods in Asia and Europe. The JBS V-Block leather is available on demand globally. The company has just launched JBS V-Block technology, which the company says inactivates the SARS-Cov-2 virus, the cause of Covid-19. At processing stage, a silver microparticle additive is added to the leather coating, providing it with antiviral qualities. “Our leather has undergone scientific tests that prove the inactivation of the SARS-Cov-2 virus. The application of this new technology sets a new standard in leather production. It not only inactivates the spread of viruses including

Sars-Cov-2, the virus which causes Covid-19, but assists in the preservation of the material, making it ideal for use in surfaces that are used regularly or come into contact with a number of people meaning there is potential increased exposure to Covid and other viruses, such as furniture, seating and vehicle steering wheels or items such as clothing, bags and wallets,” says Guilherme Motta, president of JBS Couros. In tests conducted in the level 3 biosafety laboratory (NB3) of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of São Paulo (ICBUSP), the material showed 99% inactivation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in 30 minutes from contact with viral particles. “The use of this technology increases the contact surface of silver and its prominence in the leather, enabling antiviral action,” says researcher Lucio Freitas, who participated in the tests of the new material. The tests were made in accordance with the international standard ISO 21702, which establishes the most appropriate methods to detect antiviral activity in plastics and nonporal surfaces. The microparticles are constructed from the synthesis of silver salts – an element

chosen for their recognised antiviral action – and stabilised by synthesis technology. “Silver microparticles are able to inactivate the virus by two mechanisms: in its membrane, where they break this external coating of the virus and inactivate its entry into the host cells; and, in RNA (or DNA), where they oxidise the genetic material of the exposed virus, inactivating its multiplication capacity”, says materials scientist Daniel Minozzi, founder and director of Nanox, a company specialising in new materials and antimicrobials that developed the additive used by JBS Couros. “We have worked with Nanox and USP to find the best conditions for the application of the additive, ensuring use of the appropriate equipment and regulations. We also carefully tested the concentrations and application points of the JBS V-Block technology which also contributed to our success in the creation of an antiviral leather,” says Guilherme. www.jbscouros.com/vblock/en

Updates Institutional heating (for a change ) Northampton-based Ranheat Engineering is well known in the woodworking industry for its range of industrial wood-fired biomass boilers and heaters. The efficient burning of wood residues from companies within the woodworking industry including the burning of chipboard, MFC and MDF, including fine dusts as produced by modern CNC machining centres. Companies make savings on heating costs and disposal costs, and for the last 10 years the Renewable Heat Incentive has also supplied an income stream. Ranheat’s core market is the woodworking industry, so the company was a little surprised when contacted by Serco Leisure. Ranheat was then approached by a firm of energy consultants to produce a scheme to heat the National Sports Centre at Lilleshall Hall. This involved the construction of an energy centre containing two boilers of 340kW and 725kW to cope with the varying heat demand of the nation’s premier sports complex. The site is run by Serco Leisure on behalf of Sport England. Originally the site was heated by oil (and prior to that, hand-fired coal boilers). Sport England wanted to go with a biomass system using wood chip from local suppliers delivered to site. Parts of the site are listed, and many of the trees are protected due to their age and historic significance. The complex is a mix of listed

and modern buildings including a gymnasium, sports halls, residential accommodation, administration and management. The energy centre was to be connected to a range of existing boiler rooms, mainly in basements. This would involve over 1/2km of

pre-insulated underground pipework, carefully routed to avoid the roots of the historic trees in the grounds. Wood chips were to be delivered by articulated lorry with a moving floor discharge onto the floor of the woodchip store. The store was to hold 200m³ of woodchip. Both boilers are fitted with ceramic flue gas filters and can run independently or together. As part of the contract, a minimum efficiency was stipulated. This had to be verified by an independent consultant. The consultant chose Ranheat as the scheme put forward could use a wide range of wood-based material and did not need to run with expensive wood pellets. How the woodchip was delivered was an important consideration, as was noise during delivery and noise during operation of the system. At no time could the centre be closed as it is in use 24-7, and there was to be no disruption to the athletes’ training schedule. Equally surprising to Ranheat was the moment it received an invitation to tender from a contractor for a Ranheat system, and the use of a Ranheat boiler had been specified by the Ministry of Justice for inclusion into a scheme for Channings Wood Prison in the West Country. All Ranheat boilers and heaters can run on all types of wood and wood-based products. 01604 750005 sales@ranheat.com www.ranheat.com

Salvador SuperAngle 600 – a game changer for joinery production

Meeting the increasing demands on production output while maintaining quality is a juggling act at the best of times. Pressure from rocketing timber prices and a reduction in the skilled labour market is only adding to the burden facing many furniture and joinery manufacturers – and the solution many businesses are turning to is technology. Bottlenecks in crosscutting is one area that can be easily solved. The Salvador SuperAngle 600 is proving especially popular for companies looking to reduce waste, increase accuracy and reduce the required skill level for machining. The Salvador SuperAngle 600 is a programmable crosscut for straight and angle cutting, featuring optimisation software and defecting facility as standard. Compared to traditional crosscutting methods, a Salvador SuperAngle can increase yield by +15% or more, reduce labour by over -50%, reduce operator skill levels and increase

productivity while providing a 100% safe working operation. The simple and intuitive operator interface includes a graphical representation of the machine functions, cutting lists and infeed material currently being processed. Cutting lists can be manually entered directly at the machine, or from an office-based PC using a simple Excel spreadsheet uploaded using a USB drive or standard network connection. The powerful optimisation software can manage multiple cutting lists as once, including five quality grades with priority allocation and full control over all cutting parameters such as waste percentage, trim cuts, etc. Salvador’s new software generates statistical information and manufacturing costs, reporting on the overall productivity of the machine, separate cutting lists, individual operators or different types of material, as well as realtime machine diagnostics.

The saw cycle can be regulated from 0.1-2 seconds depending on the thickness and type of material being cut and the finish required. Four independent electro-pneumatic clamps secure the workpiece from above and from the side, depending on the angle being cut. The rotating table quickly adjusts between +/- 70° to an accuracy of +/- 0.1°. In terms of configuration, each machine is built to the customer’s

exact requirements with a choice of infeed capacity lengths, outfeed tables, chain infeed systems and label printers. “Burning waste instead of burning money for heating just made good business sense!” A UK business which makes washroom cubicles and lockers has purchased a woodwaste heater from Wood Waste Technology. Total Cubical Solutions has a 18,000ft2 manufacturing base in Liverpool. MD Paul Ledsham started to look into purchasing a new woodwaste heater for the manufacturing workshop to save the company money on heating and waste disposal. Paul says: “We were spending a

fortune running oil fired heaters in the cold winter months, so it made sense to investigate how we could utilise some of the waste wood generated from manufacture to feed a wood waste heater. “As well as saving us money on heating bills, we’d also benefit financially from reduced waste removal costs by burning our waste wood instead of paying to have it taken away in skips. Burning waste instead of burning money on heating just made good business sense!” Total Cubicle Solutions purchased a WT15 heater from Wood Waste Technology last year, which was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s professional team.

Paul says: “We’re delighted that all our waste wood can be used to create free heating for the workshop. “The investment in the heater has definitely been money well spent – I’d recommend any company in a similar situation to speak to Kurt and the team at Wood Waste Technology, as they really helped us find the best solution for our business.” Wood Waste Technology’s MD, Kurt Cockroft, says: “We’ve been delighted to help Total Cubicle Solutions save money on its operational costs and help make the workshop a warmer place for its 20 employees. “Companies are often amazed how much money they can save by investing in a woodwaste heater, and impressed by the return on investment, which can take less than 12 months.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in woodwaste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of woodwaste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to -60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk

The digitalisation of furniture retail The furniture retail sector, like with every other, has undergone a digital transformation over recent years, writes digital asset management specialist Widen Enterprises. Traditionally a very hands-on, labour-intensive sector, the evolution of technology and the subsequent digitalisation in terms of design and manufacturing has enabled companies to automate processes and drive efficiencies, leading to improved cost effectiveness and better employee safety. When it comes to furniture and manufacturing sales and marketing, digitalisation has also enabled scalability and the opportunity to reach a larger market than ever before. For example, a traditional bricks-and-mortar furniture outlet might only be able to create bespoke items of furniture for a couple of customers a month, depending on the size of its workforce. However, an agile online player like Made.com, which designs and sells its furniture online and via a network of experiential showrooms throughout Europe, has access to an even bigger pool of customers. This can often be assisted using digital asset management (DAM) and product information management (PIM) systems. Today’s furniture landscape Over the past year or so, as a ‘non-essential’ retail category, furniture brands have taken a significant hit due to national lockdown measures. But it wasn’t all bad for those players who were able to pivot to an online platform in order to reach their target market. In fact, using a recent poll from Made.com, it was discovered that out of 1000 adults across the UK, over two-thirds of respondents shopped online for their home at least once a month last year. Around 19% of respondents did so multiple times, and 40% claimed to have bought new home accessories throughout lockdown, with the same number rearranging their furniture. Other furniture brands and manufacturers are now making the move towards digital transformation, looking to mimic the success of players like Made.com, with a contactless and frictionless customer experience. But where do these brands and manufacturers need to start? For every digitalisation strategy, you need digital assets. This means pictures, logos, videos, product descriptions, and, increasingly, components for augmented reality (AR) visuals. But simply storing these digital assets in centralised systems isn’t enough. Rather, having a dedicated DAM and PIM system in place will allow manufacturers to collect, organise, and distribute their digital assets both more effectively and efficiently. Agility and flexibility We’ve all exercised a degree of agility and flexibility over the last year or so, adapting to a

new normal. And there are a number of reasons why it is important for furniture brands to remain agile and flexible in a digitally transformed marketplace. Consumers’ – and therefore buyers’ – expectations and relationships with brands have changed. There are more options now, and the competition out there is strong. The need for digital transformation, and therefore streamlined workflow processes, no longer only applies to apparel but extends across all industries and sectors, including furniture manufacturing. Unlike apparel, however, it is more important in the furniture industry because clothing can be easily returned: – furniture is harder to return and often comes with ‘restocking’ fees. So, having all the correct information to choose from in order to make a big purchasing decision is crucial. Next, consumers are highly stimulated by visual content. To keep up with this demand, content management and distribution needs to be efficient, streamlined, and targeted. Providing customers with the content they need to make an informed decision across any purchasing channel can make or break a sale. But, to fulfil consumer expectations, measures need to be taken to make a digital transformation strategy a success. This includes creating a clear plan for managing product information like data, marketing content, and digital assets to support a consistent customer experience throughout the buying journey. It also includes showcasing products in a way that provides all the right information, no matter the touchpoint. Technology – from ‘nice to have’ to necessity One example of how introducing DAM and PIM software has enabled a seamless transition into a digitalisation strategy and a streamlined workflow is Suncast, a US manufacturer of home products like outdoor furniture. Suncast uses a DAM system to improve the searchability and access of its digital assets for employees and stakeholders (the results of Suncast’s efforts can be read in the case study, published

in June’s issue.) As the demands of consumers evolve further, and marketers look to explore new ways of leveraging digital assets to promote products and interact with resellers and influencers, the onus will be on brands to ensure they’re offering up-to-date ways for would-be customers to view products. 360° spin photography for example, or AR options, along with more detailed information about products, give online shoppers increased confidence in making a buying decision. When it comes to buying furniture, unlike other products bought for the home, there are infinitely more variables. Like buying clothes, in addition to being functional, customers are often looking to inject a degree of style and personality. The choice of a dining room table or a sofa might be down to specific elements like the material or fabric it’s made from, the colour and the style – in addition to all the practical elements like the size and functionality. At the beginning of this buying journey, customers are also often just looking for ideas. Optimising content with accurate metadata and information supports SEO, allowing content to appear in search results that otherwise wouldn’t have been seen without going directly to a brand’s website. For many retailers, this is one way to break into new markets and gain new customers. A slice of the pie According to a recent research carried out by Statista, furniture was sixth in terms of overall YoY growth in ecommerce sales in 2019, and estimates show that 14% of ecommerce sales will be furniture in 2022, with total sales of $99.87b. There’s no doubt, digital transformation is here to stay. So, if there is one piece of advice Widen would like you to take away, it’s that if you would like a slice of the furniture retail pie, a DAM and PIM solution to strategically manage information and distribute branded content from one central location is a very good place to start. www.widen.com
