A touch of gold

Cutting-edge trend by Ostermann

Furniture in gold or with decorative elements in gold is back in style and we will soon see a lot more of it. In line with this trend, Ostermann offers various matching solutions for the narrow surface of the board.

We have already become used to the sight of gold-coloured accessories in interiors again. In the future, you will even find the elegant colour again on entire furniture surfaces. Ostermann has the right edgings in store to cover the narrow surfaces.

Among these, ABS edgings with a real aluminium finish are a particularly high-quality solution. They are just as easy to process as standard ABS edgings. A thin layer of real metal gives their surface a realistic look. But even with ABS material alone, soft gold tones can be created.

In the following, the Ostermann experts present five selected solutions that round off golden surfaces or highlight furniture when used as accentuating edging. All versions presented here are available directly from stock and can be shipped in small quantities from one metre. Furniture makers will find more information under the search item “#Highlights10” on the Ostermann website www.ostermann.eu.

How to blend in pieces of gold

Touches of gold look particularly elegant on anthracite grey or black plain boards. Whether you combine them with glossy or extremely matt surfaces does not matter. What counts is the end customer’s personal taste and, of course, the setting in which the furniture is supposed to be placed. A golden edging can also be applied to dark wood decor boards, giving them a stylish finish.

With Real Aluminium Finish: Alu Oro Cortez

With the ABS edging Alu Oro Cortez exclusive matt brushed, you get an unusual furniture edging which is not only in line with the “gold” trend but at the same time meets the trend for matt surfaces. The 1 mm thick ABS edging matches the Fenix NTA matt metal finish of the same name. The metal finish gives it a particularly highquality look.

With real aluminium finish: Alu Gold Brushed

If you prefer your golden edging to shimmer and are looking for a quality solution, you should seek out the ABS edging Alu gold brushed. Just like Alu Oro Cortez, it has a high-quality real aluminium finish.

The brushed texture and metallic sheen add a warm hue. This edging is available from Ostermann in 3 different thicknesses (0.5, 1 and 2 mm) for a wide scope of possible designs.

Velvet gold Look: ABS edging Brushed Brass

With its fine Linea structure and its restrained, warm colour, the ABS edging, available in thicknesses of 1 and 2mm, appears very realistic even without a metal finish. The velvety gold shade not only matches Egger’s decor board of the same name, but also goes excellently with wood decors, especially boards with a slightly reddish base tone.

ABS edging Sierra Gold

The ABS edging Sierra Gold gets a slightly antique look due to its cloudy colour play. It is available in 2 mm thickness and perfectly matches Pfleiderer’s surface of the same name.

ABS Edging Gold Brushed

The ABS edging Gold brushed wood pore is slightly darker than the velvet-gold brushed brass variant and significantly lighter and calmer in decor than the Sierra Gold edging. With its warm gold tone, the 1 mm thick edging can also be used perfectly as an accentuating edging on plain-coloured boards.

Europe’s largest immediately available range of edgings

Ostermann has all furniture edgings readily available in their own warehouse. As stock items, they can be ordered by 4 p.m. to be shipped on the same day. In order to maintain this pace even with the growing variety in the product range, the company is continuously investing in state-of-theart storage and shipping technology. 01905 793550 s.parsons@ostermann.eu www.ostermann.eu

Cantisa’s digitally printed edge bands –at the forefront of technology

When the first digital printer was developed almost 30 years ago, it meant a revolution in the graphic arts industry. Years later, this technology was adapted to other applications, such as board manufacturing, where it is used to faithfully reproduce designs on different surfaces. Digital printing makes it possible to imitate wood, stone, textile, concrete, and even the most complex fantasy designs. Cantisa, the experienced edge band manufacturer based in Spain, benefits from this innovative technology to provide even more high-level quality edge bands.

Free rein to complex designs

Traditionally, edge band designs are printed by cylinders that apply ink in several steps. This method has some technical limitations making it virtually impossible to accurately reproduce complex designs.Digital printing leaves behind these limitations, as any scanned image can be reproduced incredibly acurately on the edge band.

demand. Cantisa’s customers can personalise their edge band match design, by selecting specific areas of the board to be reproduced.

Quick reaction to market trends

When using cylinder printing lines, if a new melamine design arrives on the market, it is necessary to develop a new printing cylinder to match an edge band for that design. This task entails considerable additional production time and cost. Digital printing makes it possible to do without this process – simply scan the new design and print it on the edgeband almost immediately. The result is a perfect reproduction of the original design with a shorter, much more cost-effective turnaround time.

A more natural appearance

When using printing cylinders, the chosen design repeats every 45-60cm, depending on the perimeter of the cylinder. By comparison, the digital printer can reproduce designs up to 2m long, achieving a more natural appearance with far fewer repeats.

Equal samples to final production

With conventional methods, edge band samples and final productions are manufactured in different machines. As a result, there may be differences between them. The digital printer can, first of all, make a small sample for the customer to be approved, and then print the mass production. As both are made by the same machine, they are completely equal.

Customisation based on clients’ needs Digital printing allows create edge bands on

High-resolution image

Digital printers work through small ink dots that integrate forming the desired image. Cantisa’s digital printer technique creates only the highest resolution imprints, making the dots invisible to the naked eye, and more than enough to copy the board design in full detail.

Special textures in small quantities

At Cantisa, they have more than 60 textures that are embossed by cylinders. In addition, their digital printer can reproduce the haptic (touch) of the melamine. This breakthrough means that

edgebands can be given new textures, even for small productions.

Any gloss level

Cantisa’s digital printer can give any gloss level to the edge bands, from 4 to 90 Gloss. It is possible to have the perfect transition between the surface of the board and the edge.

Unique designs

Cantisa’s digital printer provides not only the perfect match for any board. In addition, designers can successfully print their fantasy designs freely, designing unique pieces. For samples and futher information, refer to the company’s website. www.cantisa.com

SCM presents the Stefani SBX and Olimpic 500 solutions

Excellent versatility and quality even with the most complex machining operations and delicate materials. The latest elevated technical options from the SCM Group in the field of edgebanding and squaring satisfy the most varied quality design production needs, from industry to artisan work.

New heights in quality design edgebanding, both for artisan businesses and large industries. A world premier from SCM at the recent Xylexpo event in Milan for two technological solutions designed to meet the most complex and current demands in panel machining, even on the most delicate materials: the Stefani SBX squaringedgebanding machine and the Olimpic 500 edgebander.

Stefani SBX high precision squaring for outstanding machining

The new industrial Stefani SBX squaringedgebanding machine features the most advanced technological solutions developed by SCM, like the Servo electronic units and other optimisations aimed at achieving levels of finishing quality and squaring of the upper panels superior to current standards.

Stefani SBX can be used in stand-alone mode or as part of integrated lines and is synonymous with a high investment return, as it is a squaringedgebanding solution with the best price/ performance ratio in its market segment.

One of the main advantages is high productivity: Stefani SBX has been designed to operate reliably

Stay glued with Henkel edgebanding adhesives

Henkel edgebanding adhesives cover PUR, PURME, PP and EVA technologies, and offer superior products at the right price with proven results – just ask anyone using Henkel edgebanding adhesives across the UK and Europe.

Henkel offer an exceptional range of PUR adhesives supplied in Granules, 2KG blocks, 20KG drums and 200KG drums for all known edgebanding machines and applications. Henkel also have a range of ME (Micro Emissions) PURs ready for the changes coming in next year.

The tried and tested market leading Technomelt 270-7 has a proven winning background and probably the most versatile grade on the market offering exceptional high performance. However, it’s not just the adhesive that makes Henkel PUR adhesives the market leader, it’s the technical and onsite support offered by both Henkel and Kenyon’s that separates us from the rest of the field. We don’t just sell adhesives; we live them and this includes supporting you!

Over the years PUR adhesives have been more accessible to customers who are edging and as technologies advance, PUR adhesives’ outstanding performance has become available to all edging customers delivering the finished goods to the highest standards. Now you can enjoy all the benefits of a PUR adhesives and be kinder to the planet by switching to ME (micro emissions).

EVA based adhesives are still a big player and Henkel offer a range from filled to unfilled and everything else in between to suit every application. Edgebanding using EVA hot melt is commonly used due to the ease of use, but PUR adhesives have rapidly gained ground with incomparable benefits. If joints need exceptional water or heat resistance then PUR adhesives

are recommended as they have a significantly superior performance versus an EVA adhesive.

EVA hot melt adhesives are classed as filled and unfilled. Filled adhesives such as Technomelt KS220 and Technomelt 611 are generally lower costing but still offer exceptional performance and a high final bond strength. The addition of fillers can offer advantages such as preventing stringing and can be beneficial when running porous chipboard. Unfilled hot melt adhesives such as Technomelt KS351 can be applied at lower coat-weights, eliminating the glue line, and achieving tighter joints, offering high glue mileage and high final bond strength.

PP based adhesives have better hydrolysis and heat resistance than EVA based adhesives. They are easier to apply than PUR adhesive and

like EVA hot melts, do not require a wax cleaner. PP based adhesives also lower the formation of strings at the application unit, whilst providing better stability in the melting equipment and can lower maintenance costs by their cleaner running characteristics. Technomelt KS 922 and KS 300 are proven PP adhesives

Remember PUR based adhesives will always outperform both EVA or PP adhesives for heat and moisture resistance!

“When deciding on the right adhesive for your edging application, take a look at the Henkel range, let’s talk glue,” says Steve Morrow at Kenyon Group.” 07960 047020

Mind the gap! Pro-Nesting keeps trimming on track

Drilling panels before you edgeband? Guarantee quality and consistency with Biesse’s Pro-Nesting solution

Biesse’s Pro-Nesting feature is now available as an option on every machine in its range, giving entry level users access to this tried and tested solution for edge-banding pre-drilled panels without any issues or inconsistencies.

When might Pro-Nesting be needed?

Pro nesting is beneficial when panels have been pre-drilled with holes for hinges, dowels and other fixings, and the holes are close to the edge. Panels that are produced using the cut-edge-drill process, whereby they are cut to size and edge-banded before being drilled, will not require pro nesting. Where pro nesting adds value is when panels are produced via a CNC nesting process and drilled before edge-banding.

What is the problem with pre-drilled panels?

Usually when edge-banding a panel that hasn’t been pre-drilled, top and bottom tracer wheels copy the contours of the panel and guide the trimmer. The problem with using this technique for pre-drilled panels is that when the tracer wheels come upon a hole, the wheels will dip into it and treat it as a

variation in the thickness of the panel rather than a hole to be ignored. This results in too much material being trimmed from the edge adjacent to the hole and creates a scallop on the edge.

Some furniture manufacturers get round this issue by inserting a plug into each hole, but this ‘stop gap’ solution is less than ideal. Not only is it time consuming, it’s also virtually impossible to achieve an exact height match between the panel and the plug so there is always an impact on edgebanding quality.

What is the solution?

With Biesse’s Pro-Nesting option, pro nesting copiers are fitted to the top profile trimming unit and profile scraping units. In addition to the large diameter tracer wheel, there are two further wheels to the left and right of the main tracer wheel.

By having three points of contact with the panel, even if one of the wheels encounters a drill hole, the other two wheels will keep the cutters and scrapers in the correct position and prevent them from deviating. This simple but highly effective solution guarantees high quality edge-banding for pre-drilled panels.

New edge bander from HOMAG boosts production capabilities for Philip Gameson Joinery

With a turnover of around £1.5m, Philip Gameson Joinery has been manufacturing wood furniture, doors and windows of the highest quality since 1975. Throughout this time it has always adhered to a policy of investing in the latest machinery. This approach has enabled its craftsmen to focus more of their time on the traditional skills of joinery and cabinet making.

“We’ve purchased HOMAG machinery for over 20 years now, and have not only found it to consistently produce first class results, but also to be robust and extremely reliable,” explains Mark Gameson, MD of Philip Gameson Joinery.

He continues, “Our previous HOMAG edge bander was still performing well, but we needed a machine that could handle edging for fire doors.

The business was seeing a significant increase in demand for these higher specification doors and we saw an opportunity to attract new customers if we invested in the right edge bander.”

A trusty partner and advisor

“Given the strong relationship we have with HOMAG UK, our first port of call was to ask Matt Long, HOMAG’s area sales manager, to come in and discuss our requirements. Matt is very knowledgeable, not only about HOMAG products, but also about the needs of his customers’ businesses.

“Once we’d outlined what we wanted to achieve Matt was able to suggest the right edge bander for our requirements. As it happened, HOMAG

had the exact model in its Castle Donington showroom, so we arranged a visit to put it through its paces.

“To evaluate its capabilities, my father (then managing director) and our works manager took along a selection of work pieces to run through

16 EDGEBANDING MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY

the edge bander to evaluate its performance. The results were first class and consequently we decided to buy the demonstration model from the showroom.

“The installation of the machine, a HOMAG EDGETEQ S-380, was extremely well organised.

We disconnected the old machine and the HOMAG engineers installed the new edge bander in a couple of days. Their engineers then carried out a day’s on-site training for our operators. The whole process couldn’t have gone any smoother.”

HOMAG’s EDGETEQ S-380 edge bander

The EDGETEQ S-380 series offers comprehensive model options, fast feed speeds and highperformance motors. The glue application system enables users to switch easily between two colours or glue types (EVA, PU). What’s more, the multi-function profile trimming offers rapid processing of radii and longitudinal edges. For frequent material changes, the multi-stage trimming unit and multi-stage scraper can be used.

All the options in the EDGETEQ S-380 range are energy efficient and environmentally friendly. The powerTouch control system provides intuitive operation, with the machine being controlled directly using the multi-touch widescreen monitor. The ergonomic design and numerous help and assistant functions significantly simplify the edge bander’s operation.

The EDGETEQ S-380 models all benefit from a high level of precision, state-of-the-art technology and the ability to produce products flexibly and efficiently.

New markets and better quality Mark Gameson again, “The EDGETEQ has bought massive benefits to the business. It has opened up the fire door market and delivered a much higher standard of edging for our customers. The airTec edge fixing system produces virtually invisible joints every time. In addition, the machine’s throughput is much higher than its predecessor’s and we have minimal rejects; the quality is always spot on.

“With the market for fire doors growing, we expect the EDGETEQ S-380 to pay for itself well within the five year period we initially planned for. The reliability of the machine means we rarely have to call on HOMAG for support; if we do, however, their support is extremely efficient. Their engineers can remote-in via the internet and resolve most issue quickly and efficiently,” concludes Gameson.

To arrange a demonstration or for further information on HOMAG woodworking machinery or software, please contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424. www.homag.com

Ostermann zero bondline edgings –three technologies, three solutions, three-fold service

For over 10 years, Ostermann has been offering edgings to the trade for processing with zero bondline technologies. To date, millions of linear metres of Laser, Airtec and Infratec edgings have been sold. The three products are continuously adapted to the requirements of processors. An application technician is available to answer questions and provide workshops.

As partner to the trade, Ostermann has always specialised in the supply of small quantities; workshops can get furniture edgings from a length of just one metre. Even with the introduction of laser edgings more than 10 years ago, the company remained true to this strategy and supplies the edgings with a functional layer for zero bondline technologies in very small quantities, i.e. from one roll. After all, each business needs different colours and decors for their versatile

projects.

Three types of zero bondline edgings are available today for processing with laser, hot air and infrared technology. Thanks to these three technologies, boards and edgings can be joined so closely they appear as if made from a single piece. In addition, the joint is particularly resistant to moisture, heat, and UV.

A lasting furniture quality is guaranteed by the quick initial adhesion and the hardness of the joint. All information on Ostermann’s zero bondline edgings is also available under the search item “zerobondline” on the Ostermann website www.ostermann.eu.

Perfect for small businesses

Some might now think: “A particularly thin joint? I can get that with PUR hotmelt, too!” –and in a way, they are right. Still, Ostermann’s zero bondline edgings are a useful

As a competent partner, Ostermann quickly and reliably supplies the trade with the right edgings for processing with modern zero bondline technologies

alternative. “Many businesses are pursuing a two-track approach,” says Ostermann application technician Franz-Josef Volmering, “They work with machines that can process both PUR and zero bondline edgings.” With good reason. Due to short set-up times, zero bondline systems are ideal for changing projects as they occur every day, especially in the trade.

“Those who do not shy away from the investment costs for the system are therefore rewarded with the greatest possible flexibility. Ostermann supports this flexibility with an availability of diverse edging materials, colours and decors: all furniture edgings from the large range are of course also supplied with a functional layer for processing with zero bondline machines.

Continuously developed

The composition and manufacture of the high-quality functional layer have undergone continuous development over the past 10 years. This is primarily a result of the constructive cooperation between Ostermann and its customers.

Also, the edging specialist has permanently invested in

new technology over the years and improved the quality of the functional layer. Today, it is based exclusively on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), a particularly high-quality plastic. The diversity of colours has also steadily increased.

Accompaniment and advice

An important service when it comes to zero bondline edgings is competent advice. From the very beginning, Ostermann has accompanied its customers in the changeover to plants with zero bondline technology.

Starter sets and a visit from application technician FranzJosef Volmering to set up a new system are an important part of the concept. Henkel Micro Emission PUR adhesives contain less than 0.1% monomeric diisocyanate, which therefore reduces the hazardous isocyanate-containing vapours by up to 90%.

Technomelt Micro Emissions (ME) PUR adhesives have no hazardous labels and do not require a specific professional training for operators which will be required when the legislation changes for standard PUR adhesives.

Technomelt (ME) PUR adhesives offer easy and safe handling in production. Nobody likes warning labels and the fact that we can now eliminate this has huge benefits.
