I can recall overnighting in travellers’ lodgings back in the day, and it was sadly commonplace to find a bathroom sporting a chipboard-based bathroom panel (before the days of plastic items) resembling a soggy mush – clearly not fit for purpose. And outside of the bathroom, the days of white tabletops and bedroom furniture sporting a black pin-stripe on the panel edges is largely behind us. With the solutions currently available from a range of manufacturers and suppliers, there really is no excuse for manufacturers not to be producing expertly edged panels. Of course, as the technology becomes more mainstream and the products more affordable, the challenge to achieve a more premium look is more deliverable. If you haven’t already, now must be the right time to explore the world of seamless edgebanding. In our annual edgebanding supplement this year we hear from material suppliers such as Ostermann, Kleiberit, Lawcris and Kenyon Group, as well leading technology suppliers including SCM, Holz-Her, Homag and Biesse. I hope you enjoy the issue.

4 EDGEBANDING MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY

Veneer edgings from Ostermann for a perfect real wood illusion For all those who love real wood surfaces, wood veneer edgings are still the first choice. They convince with extraordinary naturalness, and protect valuable resources at the same time. In the following article, Ostermann’s experts explain how to use selected veneer edgings to make veneer furniture of particularly high quality. Ostermann provides the industry with one of Europe’s largest ranges of wood veneer edgings, including a selection of 60 different wood types and edgings in widths of up to 55mm, directly from stock. The edgings are available in different thicknesses, from 0.5mm (one layer) to 3mm (six layers). For easy processing, a bonding agent is applied to their reverse side. Upon request, the veneer edgings are available with hotmelt adhesive coating as well. For real wood enthusiasts, the Ostermann experts recommend a combination of two special veneer edgings on one board.

For particularly realistic and high-grade veneer furniture, the Ostermann experts recommend the end-grain edging European Oak (part no. 073.4200.) at the face side and the wood veneer edging European Oak (part no. 070.4200.) at the long side

Wood veneer edging European Oak and wood veneer end-grain edging European Oak In solid wood boards, the longitudinal sides show a different grain than the face edges. The same effect can be created with veneer edgings. For this purpose, the Ostermann experts have in their range two special veneer edgings, namely the wood veneer edging European Oak and the matched wood veneer end-grain edging European Oak. When processing a European Oak veneer edging along the course of the decor – and apply a matching end grain edging at the face side of the board – the furniture will hardly be distinguishable from a solid wood board any more. For further information on the mentioned edgings, go to the starting page of www.ostermann.eu and type in the search item ‘Highlights102020’. More selected highlights Besides veneer edgings made of classic wood types, Ostermann supplies many unusual timbers, such as Bird’s Eye Maple or Siberian Larch. Additionally, there are many modern interpretations of the material. Particularly noteworthy is Oak Stonewashed sanded. The veneer edging with the so-called stonewashed design combines the conventional wood material with a modern, used look. Special eyecatchers are oak veneer edgings in split wood, woodworm, wave and sawn look. These have a three-dimensional surface finish, making them not only a visual, but also a tactile, highlight. One fine example is the veneer edging Smoked Oak dark Sawn Look. All edgings delivered within 24 hours Besides the wide selection of wood veneer finishes, Ostermann supplies edgings made from materials such as ABS, melamine, acrylic, aluminium and real wood. The edgings match the surfaces of more than 70 different board suppliers from all over Europe. Stocked goods ordered by 4pm will leave the warehouse that same day.

Whether in shopfitting or furnituremaking, OSB boards are increasingly used as decorative surfaces. To seal narrow surfaces, Ostermann now offers two new edgings with OSB decor (on the right made of wood, on the left made of ABS)

“Perfect” workpieces from edgebanding machines with Redcocol Teclinex One for all Redcocol Teclinex One For All is an environmentally friendly surface and machine cleaner based on bioalcohol. It can be used for all units of an edgebanding machine and as a manual surface cleaner, and also boasts a little-known benefit – the product is suitable for cleaning machine parts like transport tracks and polyurethane rollers as well, and may even be used as a disinfectant on surfaces. Especially in the case of high-gloss or supermatt surface finishes, dirt on the transport tracks of edgebanding machines leaves marks

The eco-friendly product from the greenline series is available in different bottle and canister sizes

or smudges. By regularly cleaning transport tracks or polyurethane rollers with Redcocol Teclinex One For All, users can spare themselves the tedious task of subsequent cleaning. How to clean the conveyor line Redcocol Teclinex One For All is part of the greenline series and made of sustainable, plantbased raw materials. It evaporates quickly, and without leaving residues. To clean machine components, spray the cleaner onto the machine’s transport tracks with a spray bottle. After that, soiling can be removed easily by using a microfibre cloth. A sufficient amount of cleaner can also be sprayed directly onto the cloth before wiping the machine parts. For further information, as well as an application video, go to the Ostermann website and type in the search item ‘Teclinex’. Safe application at the spraying units Redcocol Teclinex One For All can be used for all units of the edgebanding machine and ensures a “perfect” edging finish and milling result with all edging materials, such as ABS, acrylic, PVC, PP, aluminium, melamine and real wood. The repeatedly tested product is not only

With Redcocol Teclinex One For All, the transport tracks of edgebanding machines can be cleaned quickly and effortlessly

useful for machine cleaning – Redcocol Teclinex One For All is a registered disinfection agent. User safety was dermatologically verified as “very good” according to European standards. The one – for all One For All – the name says it. The product can be used in nearly all business areas and in the workshop, for: • safe application on spraying units in edgebanding machines • easy manual surface cleaning/disinfection • effective machine cleaning The versatile applications of this product based on bioalcohol reduce the numbers of hazardous cleaners in the workshop. Storage space for dangerous goods can be minimised and storage cost can be reduced. For different cleaner applications, Ostermann offers appropriate spray bottles, laboratory bottles and refill canisters with contents of 5, 10 or 30l.

Edgings for the new Swiss Krono Surfaces? Find them at Ostermann The new Swiss Krono One World Collection 2020 has arrived. It includes 223 different plain finishes, wood and designer surfaces, categorised into four different styles. Ostermann provides the matching edgings for the new collection. Among a total of 223 surface finishes in the new One World Collection 2020, can be found seven new plain colours and 22 new wood decors, as well as 18 new designer decors. The uni-decors have a velvety-matt look, while the new wood decors were made

to look particularly realistic. Here can be found not only many oak decors, but also a striking number of new ash and lime finishes. Fantasy decors stand out, with a combination of wood and metallic or graphic elements. Further, there are some new metal and stone reproductions. In order to support furnituremakers and their customers in selecting and combining surface finishes, the products were categorised into four different design trends: Trend 1 – Warm Craft The tactile sensation and natural depiction of the surface are paramount to the Warm Craft trend. Ostermann ABS edgings such as the natural walnut reproduction Walnut Gold, the metallic edging Metalwood Black or the velvet-matt plain edging Pistachio Green match according surfaces and help implement this trend. Trend 2 – Urban Agility The Urban Agility trend is defined by Swiss Krono as “a spatial merger of working and living areas”. This merger is reflected in the surfaces, with a combination of rustic wood decors and modern concrete or stone reproductions. Rustic elements are worked in nicely in the Ostermann edgings Rustic Chestnut White or Elm Grey. Concrete and stone decors can also be found – for example, on the new edgings Gobi Terra or Anthracite Concrete Stone finish. Trend 3 – Cozy Bohemian The third design trend identified by Swiss Krono is named Cozy Bohemian. It stands for sensuality and

comfort, and puts oriental patterns onto classic oak decors. Here, the experts in edging are particularly proud of their matching edgings, having managed to reproduce the subtle superimposition of wood decor and oriental pattern on the edging as well. The result is the Craft Oak edging, which is available in three different wood shades. Trend 4 – Healthy Nordic Nordic style enthusiasts will find their finishes under the trend name Healthy Nordic. Natural lime and oak decors are combined with metalliclooking titanium reproductions, among others. Matching, bright wood decor edgings feature, with names such as Lime Cream or Lime White. To combine bright wood surfaces with metallic elements, Ostermann’s experts recommend the edging Stainless steel bronze smooth. Edgings – Just in Time Whether plain pastel shades, realistic wood decors or designer decors, at Ostermann, the right edgings for new surfaces can quickly be found, in any width up to 100mm. Upon request, the edgings are available with a retrofitted T-bar, hotmelt adhesive coating or a zero bondline functional layer. Stocked goods ordered by 4pm will leave the warehouse that same day. In today’s climate of fast-paced production and want-it-yesterday demand, reliability of supply and delivery has never been more paramount. For manufacturing businesses, delivery lead times can make the difference between a job being completed on time, or a disgruntled customer and lost business. Recognising this, panel product distribution giant Lawcris has been steadily providing a reliable delivery service for almost four decades, and its reputation has grown to industry renown, with the company receiving Panel Trader of the Year three times at the prestigious TTJ Awards. With an enormous 200,00ft2-plus warehouse at its Leedsbased site, the company is able to keep a huge stockholding that allows it to offer a rapid, next-day delivery service on orders placed before 6pm. No lead times, no worries. One supplier for every requirement In addition to reliability, though, the company also recognises that time is of the essence, and busy manufacturers do not have time to be sourcing separate suppliers for all of their production needs. Lawcris supplies all manner of decorative panel requirements, from melaminefaced boards, laminates and substrates, to specialised products. However, one of its biggest selling points is the provision of matching edging for every single board.

Don’t underestimate edgebanding adhesives “There’s edgebanding adhesives, and then there’s Henkel Technomelt edgebanding adhesives – it’s really that simple,” says Kenyon Group’s James Hamilton.

“Henkel edgebanding adhesives cover PUR, PO and EVA technologies, and offer superior products at the right price with proven results – just ask anyone using Henkel Technomelt edgebanding adhesives,” says James. “Henkel offers an exceptional range of PUR adhesives supplied in Granules, 2kg blocks, 20kg drums and 200kg drums under the brand names Technomelt for all known edgebanding machines and applications, and they are also available in ME (Micro Emissions). “The tried-and-tested, market-leading Technomelt 270-7 has a proven winning background and probably the most versatile grade on the market, offering exceptional high performance. However, it’s not just the adhesive that makes Henkel PUR adhesives the market leader – it’s the technical and on-site support offered by both Henkel and Kenyon’s that separates us from the rest of the field. We don’t just sell adhesives – we live them, and this includes supporting you! “Yes, PUR adhesives dominate the market. Over the years, PUR adhesives have been more accessible to customers who are edging, and as technologies advance, PUR adhesives’ outstanding performance has become available to all edging customers delivering the finished goods to the highest standards. “EVA-based adhesives are still a big player, and Henkel offer a range from filled to unfilled and everything else in between to suit every application. Edgebanding using EVA hotmelt is commonly used due to the ease of use, but PUR adhesives have rapidly gained ground with incomparable benefits. If joints need exceptional water or heat resistance, then PUR adhesives are recommended as they have a significantly superior performance versus an EVA adhesive. “EVA hot-melt adhesives are classed as filled and unfilled. Filled adhesives such as Technomelt KS220 and Technomelt 611 are generally lower costing but still offer exceptional performance and a high final bond strength. The addition of fillers can offer advantages such as preventing stringing, and can be beneficial when running porous chipboard. Unfilled hot-melt adhesives such as Technomelt KS351 can be applied at lower coat weights, eliminating the glue line and achieving tighter joints, offering high glue mileage and high final bond strength. “Polyolefin-based adhesives have better hydrolysis and heat resistance than EVA-based adhesives. They are easier to apply than PUR adhesive, as, like EVA hot melts, do not require a wax cleaner, and also lower the formation of strings at the application unit, whilst providing better stability in the melting equipment, in comparison with standard EVA-based adhesives. “Remember, PUR-based adhesives will always outperform both EVA or PO adhesives for heat and moisture resistance!” www.kenyon-group.co.uk

Hot-melt cleaners for edgebanding

“So, you’re running PUR, PO or EVA hot-melt adhesives for edgebanding, and therefore already recognise and demand the highest quality and performance from your adhesive,” explains Kenyon Group’s James Hamilton. “In order to ensure optimum performance, the same quality cleaner should be sought. Sadly sometimes overlooked, cleaners play a vital role in your day-to-day operations – many would argue just as crucial a role as the adhesive itself. A good cleaner can make all the difference. “The right cleaner will bring you many operational benefits, ensuring consistent dispensing and bond quality, reducing downtime and maintenance, as well as prolonging the lifespan of application equipment. Not to mention the peace-of-mind factor – there’s nothing better than being able to leave your equipment safe in the knowledge that the cleaning process has finished and therefore your edgebander will be all ready for the start of the next production run. Whilst a good cleaning process is key for all adhesives, it is especially important for PUR adhesives to prevent the glue from crosslinking. “A good-quality and appropriate cleaner, used in the correct way, can save hours of downtime over the lifetime of the edgebander, by reducing the amount of time spent on the cleaning process, thereby maximising production time. Streamlining the cleaning process is just as key as selecting the most appropriate and superior quality adhesive. “Through our premium partnership with Henkel, we can offer customers advice and help them choose the best Technomelt cleaner for their production line. Through our technical team, we are there to support customers either over the phone or through training days and site visits, ensuring they are getting the very best out of their adhesives and cleaners. This all-round support package has been fundamental in gaining us the reputation of being a key distributor to many leading UK manufacturers. “The Henkel name is, quite rightly, associated with quality and marketleading technologies, and this doesn’t purely apply to their adhesives, but also to their extensive range of hot-melt cleaners, which cover everything from surface cleaning through to thorough system/application equipment cleaning. Given that an effective cleaning process can make all the difference to meeting deadlines, maximising output and achieving daily goals, we are here to help set you on the right path and ensure you

are getting the most out of your day.” Technomelt Cleaner PURE A high-performance surface cleaner, ideal for regular cleaning of machine surfaces. Removes any contamination effectively and easily, and boasts major safety advantages in comparison to CLP classifications for standard cleaners on the market. Solvent free. Technomelt Cleaner 2 A cleaning agent for all polyurethane hotmelts in the uncured state. Used in daily operations in conjunction with Technomelt PUR adhesive, it comes in 1.2kg cartridges for Holz-Her edgebanding, and 1kg blocks for bulk melters. Technomelt Cleaner 4 A cleaning agent for all polyurethane hotmelts in the uncured state, used in daily operations in conjunction with Technomelt PUR adhesive. Technomelt All–in–One A cleaner/cleaning agent for polyurethane hotmelts, specifically to remove non-cured and cured polyurethane hotmelt, as well as carbonised hotmelt residues. Provides a deep, cleansing clean, it is available in a 1.4kg block for bulk melters. PC800 An anti-static, release agent and cleaner all in one, simplifying the process and reducing costs and errors. “We are confident that the above solutions will work for you,” says James. “So much so, we are offering a free site evaluation which will go through your entire edgebanding process, addressing any application concerns and covering adhesive/cleaner selection and procedures. It is through this proven process that we have helped many companies, who have worked with our recommendations, become more efficient and aware of what can be achieved.” www.kenyon-group.co.uk

Weigh up your options German adhesive specialist, Kleiberit, has launched a new 15kg packaging option for its granulated EVA hotmelt.

With four out of five adults in the UK experiencing some form of back pain, it is no surprise that it is the most common form of repetitive strain industry in the UK workforce. A recent survey identified that up to 20% of those suffering back pain have either given up their job or reduced their hours as a direct result. With the younger generation equally at risk, it makes sense to manage this risk effectively. According to the Health and Safety Executive, lifting and carrying heavy loads are the top two causes of back pain in the workplace. As an employer, it recommends protecting workers by asking them to avoid activities that can cause back pain where reasonably practicable. However, this is easier said than done on a busy factory floor.

“It’s our job to listen to our customers and find solutions. For us, offering a lighter packaging option that is designed to reduce manual handling risks in our customers’ factories seems like a logical step”

EDGEBANDING MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY 11

In the furniture manufacturing industry, everyday products like EVA hotmelt granules weigh in at 20-25kg – a lifting weight deemed ‘high-risk’ by the H&SE. This does not mean that injury is inevitable – especially if employees follow the correct health and safety guidelines – but if there was a way to reduce the risk, maintain a safe and healthy workforce and cut potential sick days, would people not probably do it? Kleiberit has created what it says is the perfect solution. This autumn, the adhesive specialist is introducing a lighter, 15kg packaging option for its granulated EVA hotmelt – a weight that is considered ‘low risk’ by the H&SE. Not only does this new offering significantly reduce the risk of job-related injuries, it also makes storing and handling easier. Bradly Larkan, Kleiberit’s general manager for the UK, Ireland and South Africa, says: “It’s our job to listen to our customers and find solutions. For us, offering a lighter packaging option that is designed to reduce manual handling risks in our customers’ factories seems like a logical step. By offering this much lighter alternative, employees no longer need to handle heavy granulated EVA hotmelt, and employees can have added peace of mind that the risk of back injuries in the workplace will be drastically reduced. “We are one of the first to offer lower weight options, and from the feedback we’ve had from manufacturers in other countries, we have no doubt it will be of benefit to many companies in the UK. Our new 15kg packs will be available in the UK this autumn.” For more information on Kleiberit’s new packaging options, call 01530 836699 or visit www.kleiberit.com

Starbank opts for Makor edge-processing machine from Homag UK Established in 1976, Starbank Panel Products is one of the UK’s premier decorative panel fabricators for interior fit-outs. The company specialises in manufacturing decorative panel products from highpressure laminates, wood-based panels and solid surfaces, as well as commercial and industrial plastics.

It consistently develops its own brands, exclusive to Starbank, which extend the material options for projects or component outsourcing. Phil Darbyshire, MD at Starbank, takes up the story: “We are continually investing in the latest machine and IT technology to enable our team to meet and exceed customer expectations. “As a bespoke fabricator we love to work on projects from the everyday, to one-off assignments that are too difficult for our competitors. Recently, the growing trend for more precise tolerance edge detail – such as on compact laminate or lacquered plywood, with perhaps a radius or chamfered edge – led to us wanting to replace our existing Homag machine for the very latest technological gain. Makor wide-track edge-processing machine “At Starbank, we produce about half a million panels a year. Around 80% of these are bespoke to the customer’s design and may never be produced again. So, when we’re specifying machines, we are not only looking for the usual attributes like reliability, price and service backup, but we also look for a machine that is flexible. “In addition, it has to be quick and easy to set up, because every production day is different, every job is different, and sometimes every panel is different – so the speed of set-up is vital for us. “We manufacture a lot of custom, post-formed worktops for healthcare, as an example – HTM 63 profiles being a speciality – so we need a reliable edge-processing machine to put the radius on the edge before we wrap the laminate around. “Our association with Homag goes back a long way, so the first person we talked to about this was their area manager, Jon Lawman. Knowing our business inside out, Jon immediately understood what we were looking for and suggested the Makor wide-track edgeprocessing machine.

Tracing units provide accurate edge processing, regardless of changes in panel thickness

EDGEBANDING MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY 13

The Makor wide-track edge-processing machine at Starbank

Achieving an accurate finish with fine detail “Although we had experience of similar machines, what attracted us to this particular model were the two tracing units. The core products we work with are wood-based panels and compact-grade laminates which, at one time, of course, have been a living entity, by nature of their composition. The drawback of this is that, despite the efforts of the board manufacturers, we are faced with a working thickness tolerance that needs to be addressed to ensure a class-leading finish can be achieved. “When you are machining fine details such as small radii or chamfer edges, any tolerance in the panel thickness distorts that detail, so it’s almost impossible to achieve a perfect finish. “Let’s say you want a 2mm radius down the length of the board. If the panel is slightly thicker at one end than the other, the result is a part radius at one end and a full radius at the other. The tracing units on the Makor machine trace the thickness of the panel, top and bottom, to remove any tolerance. This guarantees perfect edge-processing detail, which is a great result for our customers – and, ultimately, the end user. A solid partnership “The Makor also has three sanding heads. One does the flat edge of the panel and then the other two are at 45° to sand the radius or chamfer top and bottom. Again, this is an important feature for us. If we are processing raw plywood and it’s getting lacquered, or we are processing a compact laminate that needs oiling, then they have to be sanded to a good finish to achieve the desired results. “Another key benefit of the Makor is its wide track, which helps with long, narrow parts. When you are machining the detail on the end of the panels it keeps them square to the machine and holds them steady so,

EB_Pages2021.3.indd 13

“The growing trend for more precise tolerance edge detail, such as on compact laminate or lacquered plywood, with perhaps a radius or chamfered edge, led to us wanting to replace our existing Homag machine for the very latest technological gain” once more, you get consistent detail. “Overall, we’re delighted with the Makor. It does exactly what we wanted it to do, and Homag UK has, as usual, been really helpful in supporting us. They were flexible when we had to delay the installation, and they always stand by their products, working with us if issues need to be resolved,” concludes Phil. The Homag Group has enjoyed a successful partnership with Makor since 2017 and is the UK distributor for its products. Makor is a leading manufacturer of wood-finishing machines for workshops and industrial manufacturers of furniture, window parts and wood components. The Makor Group has created systems for finishing any kind of profile, both for the furniture and building industries. It offers solutions for processing a wide range of materials including wood, MDF, glass, plastic, metal, chipboard, coated elements and special materials. The main new entries for 2020, and key players in the recent SCM Live Show event, clearly reflect this extensive variety of technological solutions, within the reach of the entire woodworking industry: increasingly more sophisticated productivity, thanks to the integration of the edgebander or squaring-edgebander in cells and plants fitted with rollers, panel return devices, automatic loading and unloading systems, assisted by robots and fitted with IoT sensors to provide instant feedback on the machine’s functioning, in line with Industry 4.0 requirements; a unique machining accuracy and quality on any kind of panel, even the most delicate ones and with more complex materials, thanks to a new Round 2 Servo rounding unit and RT-X grinding unit and the latest optimised devices for an accurate line of glue; and a close focus on the continually evolving demands around matters of softforming and J-shape, areas in which SCM has made its mark in providing easy-touse solutions that provide equally top-quality results. Stefani Rocket – edgebanding and squaring-edgebanding line to handle high volumes with maximum ease The Stefani Rocket line, made up of two single-sided edgebanders and squaring-edgebanders and an interconnection/servo automation system, allows for both high-volume mass customisation production and equally simple management of the entire process. The automatic feed system with roller allows for panels to be loaded without having to match or align them. This leads to a considerable saving in time and, more than anything, means the line can be controlled without the assistance of specialised operators. The different configuration options can adapt to the spaces available, adjusting accurately to the already existing production situation. The line is even available in the non-squaring version, to integrate into processes with the presence of panels that have already been squared.

Flexible Stefani cell edgebanding solutions for batch 1 Flexibility, integration and automation – these are the cornerstones of the new Stefani cell range, designed and developed to fully interpret and meet the demands for efficiency, high production and customisation from today’s market. The edgebander or squaring-edgebander is integrated into cells and plants fitted with rollers, panel return devices, automatic loading and unloading systems, assisted by robots and fitted with IoT sensors to guarantee instant digital services as back-up support to the optimal functioning of the machine. Stefani cell is the new generation of flexible cells with an edgebanding or squaringedgebanding machine for batch 1 machining, with high-tech solutions requiring minimum investment: the Stefani cell E, to machine panels that have already previously been squared; the Stefani cell S to machine panels with squaring-edgebanding function and semi-automatic feed; and the high-productivity Stefani cell H/H+, to machine panels with or without squaring-edgebanding function and with automatic feed. The range’s software has also been modernised with Maestro active edge and Maestro active watch – a new supervisor with an HMI interface and structure shared with all the SCM machines. In particular, the new Edge Store Manager function means the change of edge and machining can be handled automatically, as well as rapidly and intuitively. This is done using a combination system between the program and edge via a barcode reader and QR code. Of fundamental importance is also the

EB_Pages2021.3.indd 16

integration with the Maestro connect IoT platform, the system for collecting and analysing data from SCM technologies which, thanks to the constant analysis of the data being produced by the machines, provides instant access to a wide range of services such as remote technical support with augmented reality (AR) glasses, the purchase of spare parts online, predictive maintenance and numerous other services that considerably increase the effectiveness and efficiency of a production plant. Stefani Cell E Stefani cell E is the entry-level cell in the range, for edgebanding previously squared panels. It combines the advantages of customised production and large volumes with a compact overall design and, above all, with an accessible investment level – even for SMEs. The multiple configurations available allow

for each specific need to be covered in terms of productivity and machining. Feeder, Robot or additional movements can be combined to offer maximum flexibility and customisation. In particular, in the Robot Loop version, the Stefani cell E is configured with the anthropomorphic robot for the complete automatic management of the panel loading/ unloading work. It also features: – Fast-axis high technology, in line with future market scenarios. Type, colour, edge thickness, position and mortise depth, handling of the protective film and panel dimensions – the highly versatile Stefani cell E means the user can continually feed-in and change all these parameters as part of the production flow without it being interrupted. – Simple, integrated and versatile, the multiple configurations available (reloop with robot or reloop with motorised belts) mean all specific needs in terms of production and

machining are met. Feeder, robot or additional movements can be combined to offer maximum flexibility. – Whether it be in self-learning mode, with barcode/QR code or with supervisor, Stefani cell E is programmed to be set at any level of logical and physical integration. – New automation to accelerate business – with the new fast, reliable pickback gantry panel-return system, the panel is automatically rotated, to speed up the next in-feed. It will also be possible to unload at the end of the cycle in masked time with the next loop load. – No errors, and a guarantee of always feeding in the panels in the right direction, thanks to the Side Finder technology, which shows how to position the panel from a display in the operator’s area, so that it can be correctly machined. Stefani Cell S Stefani cell S is the all-in-one square-edging cell designed for mid-range investments, with the aid of a single operator to provide clear business advantages from the outset – especially companies focusing on semiintensive production and/or with varying production batches. – Compact and performing, Stefani cell S allows for the machining of parts from the premeasured and squared nesting cycle and sheet cutting, and which require the parallelism/ squaring to be reset. This occurs thanks to the innovative semi-automatic feeder device with panel squaring, which facilitates and allows for longitudinal and transversal feeding, even of large panels. – Modular and efficient, the Stefani cell S is designed to be easily integrated into different operating situations, thanks also to its integration with the new Pickback gantry panel return system, which automatically unloads the machined panels into a stack. This brings with it considerable advantages in logistics terms and overall machining times, with full automation for the return of the panel as far as

EB_Pages2021.3.indd 18

the operator loading area. – Exact and dynamic, the specific technical solutions provided guarantee maximum quality at the final assembly stage of all the furniture parts – even the largest pieces like the sides and cupboard doors. Repeatability and machining accuracy become a safe added value for each component in a piece of furniture. Stefani Cell H and Stefani Cell H+ Boasting maximum customisation, high productivity levels and impressive machining quality, Stefani cell H and Stefani cell H+ are the new edgebanding and square-edging cells capable of bringing together all these advantages within one solution. The cells can be configured with different kinds of panel-feeder systems – semi-automatic or fully automatic – are structured according to technical solutions, level of investment and efficiency, and are designed to guarantee both industrial level production volumes as well as maximum diversification of the production batch. Stefani cell H/H+ ensures 100% efficient machining of components for furniture items for every part of the home (kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, wardrobes and studies), bringing with it considerable advantages. – Instant production, and financially advantageous, both for batches with single panels as well as for average standard stacks, without the need to stop production for the change of format, thickness, ornamentation or gluing quality which occur on a regular basis during a machining shift. – Instant availability, even on mobile devices, of the machining information relating to each single panel – wherever it is in the cycle – thanks to the continuous tracking provided by the supervision software. – Panel flow and movement optimisation handled and synchronised with company network data.

The best of softforming for J-Shape type profiles As part of SCM edgebanding, a great deal of attention is also paid to market demands on softforming and J-shape, with the state-of-theart Stefani models. The J-side kit, in particular, has been designed to solve the problem of complex profiles, so the straight edging lines up perfectly with the shaped edging, without gaps or projections. There is no longer any need to carry out this machining manually or with an additional procedure, thanks to this exclusive SCM solution. An edgebander equipped like this means any kind of edgebanding problem can be resolved while work continues, without any interruption, exactly as though it were working on a normal straight edge. This is a significant step forward in being able to extend the creative potentials of softforming to a growing number of companies, a solution which is effective with any kind of edge and with different thicknesses that can be applied and worked without interruption, concludes SCM. www.scmgroup.com

Streamer 1057 XL – get the edge What gives an edgebander the edge? Perhaps one considers performance and innovation above all else. Maybe a consistent and repeatable finish is a high priority. Or, perhaps advanced engineering and exceptional build quality are key areas of consideration. If the answer comprises all of these, it’s time to take a closer look at Holz-Her’s Streamer 1057 XL edgebander – a complete machining solution for the small- to medium-sized manufacturer.

“The Streamer 1057 XL delivers high-quality results, a precise, repeatable finish and unrivalled flexibility”

EB_Pages2021.3.indd 20

The compact edgbander is designed to offer consistent, repeatable, finished panels in a single step. It comes equipped with a wealth of exclusive features as standard, including a pre-milling unit for precisely dressed panel edges, and a separate corner rounding unit for complete corner processing. It also comes with Holz-Her’s patented Glu Jet 301 glue application system (found on its top industrial Accura edgebander range), which means the user has the flexibility to change between EVA and PUR in just four minutes. This model’s inclusive features do not stop there. The Streamer 1057 XL eliminates the need for manual finishing, saving time, reducing costs and increasing quality by including three finishing units – a mechanical radius scraper, an application-controlled flat scraper and a buffing unit. A spraying unit, designed to prevent adhesion of any glue and contamination residue, is also available as an exclusive option on the 1057 XL.

Edge feeder – fully automatic, user-friendly feeder for coiled edging as well as a single strip feeder. An edging separator is available (as an option) for practical processing of packages of edging strips. It also offers gentle material handling, with a transport belt for edging transport, and a light barrier for edging recognition

Pressure unit – a high-quality, three-roller pressure unit for pressing edging against a panel cleanly and forcefully. The first roller has a motor drive, then follows two conical pressure rollers

Premilling unit – cut edges often have small tears in the top layer. The pre-milling unit ensures clean panel surfaces and prepares the panels for the gluing process. It is also equipped with patented air-stream jointing tools

EB_Pages2021.3.indd 21

Pneumatic end trimming unit, for straight or chamfered end trimming on thin edging. A standard feature allows this unit to be pivoted to 10° pneumatically. A high-quality version, with stable cast iron pillars, each of its saw motors are mounted on two guides for precisely trimming off protruding edging

“The 1057 XL represents the principle of the entire Streamer line, and for good reason,” says Paul Nightingale, national sales manager for Holz-Her UK. “It offers an impressive equipment list and, although compact in size, the Streamer’s processing capabilities match much larger machines, edging up to 6mm and workpiece thickness up to 60mm.” Consistency, repeatability and performance come hand in hand with the Streamer edgebander, but this can only be achieved with a stable frame. “The build quality of this machine really sets it apart from the rest,” states Paul. “Each model is plasma-cut on a laser cutter, delivering pinpoint accuracy. We fabricate our own frames. We cut, fold and weld to guarantee a stress-free structure. “Every step is performed using engineering calculations to create pockets in the steel. We know every part of the machine – where the fold line will be, and where it will be welded – allowing Holz-Her to fine-tune any tolerances and create a completely rigid frame. This is extremely important. because any discrepancy will get magnified by distance of travel. “We don’t have to go to these lengths – we could normalise our frames like other manufacturers do – but that would mean we couldn’t guarantee a rigid, monolithic frame. If you’re buying a machine from Holz-Her, you know it will stand the test of time. We don’t cut corners. Essentially, we are not just assemblers, we are manufacturers. We manufacture our machines, and build from the base up, and that’s why we can guarantee results.” Holz-Her has invested over €1m in its automated cutting line – an unmissable nod to the importance of quality and innovation at the business. “Just like the machines we make, the line is capable of batch-one production. Machines are then hand finished and thoroughly tested before shipping. It’s a labour of love, and one we undertake willingly.” Paul adds: “It’s this strong and rigid framework that underpins the Streamer’s success. This, combined with Holz-Her’s 50 years of experience and ongoing commitment to technical innovation, results in a machine that delivers high-quality results, a precise, repeatable finish, and unrivalled flexibility.” Keen to put the Streamer 1057 XL to the test? “Biesse’s Ray Force System makes it possible to considerably reduce production costs compared to standard technologies that require the use of glue”

Biesse, providing cutting-edge technology that is capable of responding to the qualitative needs the market demands, has developed an all-new technology for the application of edgebanding strips to shaped panels – Ray Force System. Its design is based on an incomparable technique which uses infrared lamps to fuse a reactive layer, and the advantages are impressive – maximum quality of finish, reduced energy consumption, and ease of use. The lack of a glue line guarantees the continuity of the panel’s surfaces for an aesthetic result of enduring quality. Biesse’s Ray Force System makes it possible to considerably reduce production costs compared to standard technologies that require the use of glue. It does not require maintenance, it does not get dirty, waiting times for glue heating are eliminated, and sensitivity to environmental conditions is drastically reduced.

Compared to laser technologies, Ray Force System requires a much smaller investment and is much easier and safer to use, states Biesse. Furthermore, unlike laser technology, its flexibility allows for the option to use the traditional technique with EVA or PUR glue as well, through a fast and easy manual change of equipment. The maximum quality of the finished product is obtained through edgebanding strips that are specially made by the world’s largest suppliers, but it is also possible to buy from local manufacturers that have developed pre-glued strips with the proper characteristics. Alongside the bestselling Air Force System technology for linear edgebanding, the Ray Force System for shaped edgebanding makes it possible to cover all possibilities of the process for this kind of machining operation. www.biesse.com
