LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER | THROWS LIKE A GIRL In her teens, my younger daughter Charlotte was a first-rate ballplayer with a good bat and a live fastball. My still sore catching hand attests to that. One day, a middle-aged male relative commented that she “throws like a girl.” A dozen years later we still refer to him in terms generally reserved for the likes of Kim Jong-un. I mention this because a tsunami of “strong women” advertising, design, media and marketing has been flooding the popular culture and, as you might guess, my favorite of all time is the uplifting and defiant “Like A Girl” campaign by Always and its renowned “Throw Like A Girl” Superbowl spot. More generally, I admire the positive message of empowerment that comes from femvertising. I live with, work with, and did my best to help raise strong women. I am also a guy and know what jerks we can be or, more specifically, I have been. So any support women, and especially girls, get from the broader society is a good thing. You have to admire the Dove “Real Beauty” campaigns, the STEM “role model” Barbies, the Brawny Woman on paper towel packaging, the Women’s Aid domestic violence billboards, State Street Global Advisors’ “Fearless Girl” spots, the Pantene “Sorry” advertising, the many “Hall of Femmes” popping up to celebrate accomplishment. It’s all a major step forward GORDON KAYE IS THE PUBLISHER OF GDUSA Comments, suggestions and letters can be sent to gkaye @ gdusa.com.

from the pink and passive tactics of the past. At the same time, I have been around long enough to know marketing’s iron rule of thumb: authenticity gets hijacked. As I write this, today is International Women’s Day and the bombogenesis of mediocre graphics and preachy messages across all media indicates the danger of oversaturation and underthinking. Turning an iconic logo into a female for a day is pretty lame as is giving special shopping discounts or disseminating simplistic bromides on overpriced tee-shirts. Not to be too cute about it, but many companies and agencies are embracing a new kind of “me too” movement — the lazy and derivative kind — which entails jumping on the bandwagon to co-opt the language and imagery of female independence and gender equality by banal means for banal ends. Why? Because it’s an easy creative and copywriting path, it signals virtue to the easily swayed, and it might sell some stuff. This has been dubbed “marketplace feminism” because the primary point is to brighten up brands, spiff up celebrities, prop up politicians. Femvertisers have shown they can play hardball when a meaningful message aligns with the truth of a brand and the commitment of a company. I fear we are already settling for softball. WISTFUL REBELLION Last month’s GDUSA People To Watch feature resonated, with a sellout of the print edition and more than twenty thousand visits to the online version. I believe this annual feature is popular because it is human nature to want to know what your colleagues and peers are thinking, saying and doing. Moreover, these reports always yield a slew of gently surprising insights. This time around, for example, 85% of our 2018 people-to-watch say they prefer Instagram over other social media platforms. That is an interesting reveal. Even more intriguing is that “none of the above” is the second most frequent choice. Here’s my speculation. There is a small but growing — contemplative and almost wistful — rebellion among creative thinkers against the tyranny of social media, it’s addictive qualities, it’s flattening effects, it’s suffocating purveyors, and it’s distorting effect on society. If so, leading the charge is Hugh Weber of the Institute of Possibility whose response to our social media query was “I prefer Potlucks”. And Tsilli Pines of FINE: “Coffee date with friends.” And Maurice Cherry of Fog Creek Software: “None of them, honestly.” And Daniel Doernemann of Loyalkaspar: “I love being social. I love media. And I love to keep them separate as much as I can.” And Viceland’s Julie Ruiz: “I’m kinda secretly waiting for the backlash of it all.” I share the concerns of our persons-to-watch and it feels so good to vent. Now, all I have to do is turn this piece into a Tweet and a Facebook post, and I can go home for the evening.

Makers, marketers and sellers are challenged as never before to convey the message, promote the brand, close the deal. Think fragmented audiences, information overload, media clutter, global competition, economic dislocation, changing practices and preferences. Package design, point-of sale, and retail graphics are increasingly the difference makers in telling the story, advancing the brand, and influencing the purchase. The outstanding work showcased here — from 200 elite creative firms and agencies, inhouse design departments, and production companies — celebrates beauty, of course, but more importantly the power of design to forge an emotional link with the buyer at the moment of truth.

FRESH | PLAYFUL PIZZERIA ILLUSTRATIONS AVOID STEREOTYPES

NEW YORK NY/WILMINGTON NC The Door has branded a new

pizzeria developed by James Beard Award-Winning Chef Vivian Howard and husband/business partner Benjamin Knight, stars of the PBS documentary series “A Chef’s Life.” The documentary explores farm-fresh cooking, family and community in small-town Eastern North Carolina. The new restaurant is dubbed Benny’s Big Time Pizzeria, a reference to the couple’s childhood nicknames. Creative Director Melinda Welch and Art Director Sara Berks of The Door worked with the restaurateurs to develop the visual identity, as well as to design and produce its collateral. Their decision was to focus on the key attributes of the experience — housemade menu items, comfort, approachability and playfulness — while avoiding stereotypical signifiers of an Italian-American restaurant. To that end, the team used a color palette rooted in rich red and deep blue hues, paired with bright and warm accent colors. They also commissioned a wide range of ingredient, pizza, and plated-dish illustrations from Nanna Prieler, which come together as collaged elements throughout the branding and collateral, and serve to cue the Italian nature of the menu but with a contemporary and whimsical spirit. Several adorn a unique four-color pizza box and the outside of the historic building. www.thedooronline.com

FRESH | ARTISTS BAND(ANA) TOGETHER

NEW YORK NY With the first year anniversary of President Trump’s inauguration as the motivation, a group of artists,

designers and illustrators came together to raise money for charities that need assistance. Each artist was asked to design a bandana in support of a non-profit of their choosing, a list which includes Planned Parenthood, She Should Run, the Environmental Defense Fund, NAACP, National Organization for Women, and several others. The idea for the campaign, #bandtogether, came from Wolff Olins’ mission to use design for good. With the help of online retailer Print All Over Me, the bandanas were made available for purchase with 100% of proceeds going to the designated charities. www.paom.com/stores/wolffolins

FRESH | MARGO CHASE'S CREATIVE DRIVE LIVES ON IN EXHIBIT

DALLAS TX Texas A&M University-Commerce, Viscom Gallery in Dallas

is hosting an exhibition honoring the work of legendary graphic designer Margo Chase who perished in an aviation accident late last year. “Margo Chase: Chasing the Bright Light” runs from March 23 through May 2 and follows her work prior to and after the founding of her Chase Design Group in 1986. Comments the design firm's CEO Chris Lowery: “Throughout her successful, ever-evolving career Margo Chase was always in search of something new — new ideas, new styles, new types of work. She jumped from category to category with ease, looking to solve the design challenges that are unique to different businesses, communication methods and creative media.” Adds CCO Clark Goolsby: “The exhibition is a celebration of Margo’s lifelong drive to create in many different forms and styles . . . It is our hope that this will light a creative spark in the viewer to constantly seek the new and to keep the passion that she brought to art and life.” Joshua Ege, Assistant Professor of Visual Communication at Texas A&M University-Commerce, says: “I have been inspired by the work of Margo Chase throughout my career as a designer and educator...” In two GDUSA reader polls, Chase was ranked among the most influential graphic designers of the era. tamuc.edu

FRESH | JRINK GETS CREATIVE CLEANSE

WASHINGTON DC JRINK Juicery is a cold-press juice bar and delivery service that sources high quality ingredients and

juicing methods to provide more nutrients in each bottle. Design Army’s challenge was to rebrand and reduce packaging costs while still keeping the farm-to-bottle mission in mind. Rather than move from glass bottles to plastic, which would go against the brand’s socially-conscious ethos, the designers devised a plan to print a simplified label that could be placed on the caps, eliminating additional costs for printing on the bottles. Design Army chose white for the JRINK packaging, de-cluttered the labels, and redesigned the logo to let the color of the juices come through. designarmy.com

FRESH | PENTAGRAM DIRECTS TRAFFIC TO MINNEAPOLIS MAIN STREET

MINNEAPOLIS MN After a major renovation intended to make Nicollet Avenue more pedestrian friendly, Pentagram was asked to design a brand identity and comprehensive program of signage, wayfinding and environmental graphics for the “Main Street” of Minneapolis. Though Nicollet was one of the earliest center city pedestrian and transit “malls” dating back to the 1960s, Pentagram wanted to move away from the limiting notion that the street is a shopping mall when, in fact, it is a vital thoroughfare integrated into the city that defines the character of downtown. The brand message captures that spirit with a simple tagline, “On Nicollet,” highlighting the avenue as a destination. The identity centers on a letter “N” built from two sides of a directional arrow, one going up and one going down, conveying the movement of traffic and arterial role of Nicollet. The arrow forms can also be used to construct a letter “M” for the “MN” state abbreviation or “NM” for Nicollet Mall. Typography is set in the sans serif Fakt and a traffic-oriented color palette features a bright yellow along with black and white. The directional elements extend to a program of signage and environmental graphics for the street, including directories, kiosks, banners and street signs. The fold of the logo provides the form for dimensional signage affixed to poles and street lights while other wayfinding is inset in the pavement. At Pentagram, Paula Scher headed the design team which included Courtney Gooch and Sarah McKeen. They worked closely with renovation architects James Corner Field Operations, as well as the Mpls Downtown Improvement District and the City of Minneapolis. www.pentagram.com

FRESH | US OPEN SERVES SIMPLIFIED VISUAL IDENTITY

NEW YORK NY The US Open is the fourth and final Grand Slam

tennis event; it began as the U.S. National Championship in 1881 and became the US Open in 1968. To mark the 50th anniversary of the Open Era, the United States Tennis Association asked Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv to reinvent its visual identity. The mark that had been used for 20 years — an illustration of a flaming tennis ball paired with thin serif type and a red swoosh — was a complicated image that presented challenges in digital media and as a premium brand. The designers retained the core concept of the flaming ball for its sense of energy but evolved it into a simple icon paired with an italic, lowercase sans serif typeface and with the name held together by a flipped “u” and an “n”. The result: a modernized look, a more youthful appeal, and an identity optimized for applications ranging from apps and Instagram to billboards, print ads, and swag. www.cghnyc.com

NEW MOVEMENT SEEKS TO DOUBLE WOMEN LEADERS IN DESIGN As demands for gender equity and female empowerment bubble up in the broader society, AIGA has launched “Double or Nothing,” an initiative whose goal is to double the number of women leaders in design. Despite graphic design being a majority female profession — 53.5% according to a recent study by AIGA and Google — women hold only an estimated 4% to 11% of leadership positions depending on business sector and particular survey. path toward getting what they want and deserve,” says Emily Oberman, who led the team at Pentagram. “To that end, we’re looking for companies to make a public pledge of commitment and to be held accountable for meeting goals. You can bet that savvy designers will be drawn to those companies working to ensure inclusivity and balance.” Blue State Digital, also a lead partner, built the website and lent its proprietary tools to serve as a foundation for communications and engagement. Explaining its participation, Blue State Digital Creative Director Laura Kunkel says: “The awareness and momentum are there — it's time for our community to design a solution to achieve parity.”

PHIL DELBOURGO DELBROUGO VICE PRESIDENT OF DESIGN VOX MEDIA, NEW YORK NY

THOMAS O’CONNOR, JR. CEO AND CHAIRMAN, MOHAWK, COHOES NY

The NPTA Alliance has awarded Thomas O’Connor Jr., CEO and Chairman of Mohawk, the 2018 Stanley O. Styles Industry Excellence Award at its annual convention in New York City. The awards is the highest honor for an individual who has had a distinguished career in the paper, packaging and supplies industry. A proponent of change during his career at Mohawk, O’Connor was early to embrace digital print technology, unafraid to model businesses that are cutting edge, and willing to collaborate and partner with companies that others might see as competitors. Although viewed as disruptive at times, his appetite to innovate has helped Mohawk to thrive through the last couple of decades. He is the third Mohawk executive to earn the prestigious Styles award: it went to the late Thomas O’Connor, Sr. in 2003 and Walter Duignan in 2009.

JIM PRIOR AND SIMON BOLTON GLOBAL CEO AND EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN SUPERUNION, LONDON UK

Superunion is “a next-generation brand agency” resulting from the convergence of five WPP brand consultancies and design agencies — Brand Union, The Partners, Lambie-Nairn, Addison Group and VBAT. Prior has been an advisor to CEOs and senior leaders of global and local organizations, and has a broad perspective on a diverse range of industries and sectors as he has led major programs of work with renowned clients such as Ford, Deloitte, Telefonica and the BBC. He joined WPP in 2001. Following a 25-year career in advertising, spanning three major agencies — Ogilvy, FCB and JWT — Bolton took over the reins at Brand Union in 2007.

Vox Media has named a new Vice President of Design to revitalize the company’s inhouse design efforts. Phil Delbrougo joins the digital media company from First Look Delbourgo Media where he was the Executive Creative Director and helped to launch TOPIC. Previously he was the SVP of Brand Creative at VH1 and the Creative Director for the Viacom digital consumer products lab that launched the MTV and CMT Artists apps. In addition, he is a co-founder of ACT/ART, an organization that has worked at the intersection of art and activism, an example being their #IAMTHEMANY criminal justice campaign launched in partnership with the Obama Administration. Delbourgo’s mandate is to help develop a strong, renewed design vision for the entire company. He reports to Vox Media COO Trei Brundrett. As of the first of the year, Rick Valicenti welcomed JOHN POBOJEWSKI and BUD RODECKER as partners at Chicago’s Thirst. Pobojewski focuses on intermedia and the blending of brand, interactive, sound, motion, and environments. He is a graduate of Northern Illinois University with a BFA in Visual Communication and a Bachelor of Music in Performance. Rodecker doubles as a partner at Thirst and adjunct professor at DePaul. His work explores the space between logical constraints and formal play, and balances form with meaning; he is interested in systems and processes with the potential to create design. Valicenti founded Thirst in 1988, described as “a communication design practice providing design and immersive environments for high profile clients in the architectural, performing arts, and education communities.” Greteman Group art director MEGHAN WOLFE joins the Art & Design Advocates board. The group helps generate funding to support special needs and enrichment opportunities for students in Wichita State University's School of Art, Design and Creative Industries. The group has funded individual projects, student conference expenses, visiting artist/scholar expenses, project-related travel, student materials, equipment, even new kilns for the ceramics department. "As a graduate of the school, it makes me feel good to give back in this way,” says Wolfe. The board meets 10 times a year to consider funding requests. “I wish we could say yes to each and every one,” she adds.

PAPER + PR IN T | SPRING PAPER PROMOTIONS The number one take away from our 55th annual print reader survey: the passion for print is alive and well. Designers value print for its classic strengths — the promise of the tangible, sensual, physical, real — human connection. And they try to identify and utilize print when and where it makes sense. That print continues to engage and remain relevant is thanks, in part, to a few great specifier paper mills who continue to make papers that perform and provide resources that inspire, educate and inform.

DISRUPTION IS ALSO DISCOVERY Each issue of the Mohawk Maker Quarterly relies on a single word for its creative framework. In issue thirteen, that word is “disruption.” Despite its troublesome ubiquity, disruption’s essence of exploration, discovery and revolution are successfully recaptured in this edition. Since the publication’s debut in 2013, and with each subsequent issue, Mohawk and partner, Hybrid Design, seek to provide thought-provoking inspiration for graphic designers around the world through engaging content and well-considered design on paper. mohawkconnects.com

Package design and related disciplines are increasingly the difference makers in advancing the brand and influencing the purchasing decision. The outstanding work showcased here — from 200 elite design firms, design departments and production companies — is testimony to this phenomenon. Our annual competition celebrates attractive graphics, of course, but more importantly the power of design to forge an emotional link with the buyer at the moment of truth.

IN CELEBRATION OF PACKAGING TO EXCITE, ELEVATE, AND ENGAGE A MESSAGE FROM NEENAH PACKAGING SPONSOR OF GDUSA’S AMERICAN PACKAGE DESIGN AWARDS

Consumers interact with packaging more than any other form of communication design, whether the package sits on a shelf at a brick-and-mortar store or on an ecommerce site. Online, consumers value interactive 360-degree views that allow them to “unwrap” the product for closer views. In store, customers want to see and touch and experience the product at the point of sale. Once purchased, if a customer likes a package and/or finds it useful, they often keep it. Last year, consumers purchased an average of 6.5 physical gift cards per person. Studies among recipients suggest they perceive gift cards as more valuable than a traditional gift, perhaps speaking to the preferences of millennials, who are disrupting traditional shopping patterns. create unique, premium packaging, gift cards and labels for cosmetics and fragrances, beer, wine and spirits, and all types of consumer products, providing designers and brand managers with endless opportunities for customization. Neenah understands packaging enhances the brand experience, and it must communicate the value and promise of the brand. Luxury brands rely on a diversified mix of marketing materials to position their brand. Websites, mobile devices, and apps are essential but the tactile, tangible nature of paper and packaging creates a unique connection between brand and buyer. Nowhere is this more evident than in premium package design, a high-touch tool that brand marketers utilize to win hearts and minds and inspire enduring brand loyalty.
