M.C.P. PLANNING WORKSHOP SEMESTER II DEVELOPMENT PLAN : GANGTOK

WORK PROCESS : Primary survey, Status report preparation, Proposal report preparation

POPULATION OF GANGTOK(CENSUS 2011) :

GEOGRAPHICAL AREA:

This exercise was undertalen by the batch of First year MCP Studentds as a part of their Development Plan exercise in Semester II of Planning workshop. It involves the step by step procvess of providing development proposals and strategies from Background study, primary data collection by physically visiitng the city, preparastion of a statsu report and then finally a proposal report.

I was involved in the study and analysis of the environmental aspects of Gangtok and its setting. This incuded the climate, vegetation, climate change aspects, environmantal awareness and policy as well as the disaster vulnerability of Gangtok. Gangtok is characterised by a unique geographical setting

EXISTING LAND USE OF GANGTOK

The Land Use map of Gangtok as shown here has been made as per the primary survey by the students, and follwoig the AMRUT land use classification. Gangtok has a major poprtion covered by vegetation, and has very few important roads which enable connectivity all acorss the city, incuding a national highway.

The primary survey involved Household questionnaires, expert interviews, questionnaires for commercial/tourism establishments, as well as tourists. Transport related data collection included Cordon, Mid Block and Intersection surveys.

Developing the GIS Based Analysis for climatic factors in Gangtok. These maps were crerated using IDW with readings taken at survey points across the different wards within the Gangtok Municipal Corporation(GMC) Boundary. The points were selected so as to cover all types of locations and altitudes. The readings were measured using the Kestrel environment meter by the students during the primary survey itself. Along with the above maps, thwe analysis involved collected data from the various departments in Sikkim and Gangtok, including thew Forest and Wildlife Departmenr, Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Climate Change cell, etc.

BROAD VISION FOR PROPOSAL:

To direct Gangtok’s development towards a sustainable and resilient town, along with enhancing its identity and its unique environmental features as the capital of the Green State of Sikkim. The proposals were considered in the following major categories:

1. Disaster management and resilience 2. Ecotourism 3. Wildlife and Forest Conservation 4. Long term sustainability goals.

have been suggested in a phase wise implementation strategy

Identifying the challenges based on the primary, secondary survey, expert consultation and current situation at Gangtok. The gaps and challenges related to the existing conditions and future projections were further used for the proposals.

Primary work: Insitutional builigngs like banks, commerical offices-PRESENT, retrofitting, repairs and renovation of buildings.

SCOPE OF WORK :

• BILL OF QUANTITIES

• ESTIMATION

• ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING AND DETAILING

• 3-D RENDERING, PRESENTATIONS

• CLIENT CO-ORDINATION

Work based around banks , and other structures related to the banking institition like staff quarters, office atreas, trainig centres, currency chest, etc.

Work pattern based on tender system. Hence, I also learned about creating estimates, contractor tender terms, comparative rates and checking on intermeditate bills.

The process also involved researching materials, manufactures and cooridignting with the bank engineers regading selection of materials and indiviudal fixtures for the same.

Periodic Site visits to co-ordinate the execution of the design while dealing with all possible challenges due to site conditions.

Coordinating with consultants for Electrical, HVAC, or Plumbing works so as to align the system of the services provided with the finished look of the design. Providing the clients with 3D renders of the proposed designs with one of more alternatives was also part of the process, and then the selected option would be details out further for execution.

Preparing drawings for the details of the Interior design features in the office space which are then ensured to be properly executed on site.

DESIGNING A PUBLIC LIBRARY AS A COMMUNITY HUB

LOCATION: Utsav Chowk, Kharghar, sector 7 , Navi Mumbai

AREA: 10,120 SQ.M.

TYPOLOGY : INSTITUTIONAL

The process of the research helped understand the various aspects of the library and related activities. One could also get an idea about how the people would behave in a certain environment.

The library has been a unique kind of place since the past, which includes the grand halls of the past as well as the lavish private libraries. Today in India, there is a need to realise the way we see and use libraries.

A public library today has information to improve people’s lives. They act as enabler; as a connector. In India, not everyone is aware of the digital transactions and information that more and more people and switching to today. Libraries could make people more aware and help them keep up with the developments.

The design is spread out around a central open space, acting like a campus with various activities in each of the areas. The elemnts like balconies and verandas project out and are indented in the primary volumes. The library opens up to the north of the site, with a stepped landscaped area which becomes the place for social gatherings like outdoor talks and workshops. It can be easily accessed from the main building as well as the central open space.

A library can be a place for creating opportunties for learning and sharing knowledge for the world of today. It can be designed as an amalgamation of a variety of spaces which allow freedom of enjoying your won ambience. The transitional spaces can also be allowed to engage in the surroundings like creating stepped seating or shaded areas near the enclosed rooms, so you can spend time to experience a variety of activities in your won choice of style and mood. It also makes it an overall engaging public environment.

THE CHANGING FLOOR PLATE IN A SINGLE LARGER VOLUME ALLOWS FOR DYNAMIC CHANGES IN SPACE SIZES

The changing floor plate in a single larger volume allows for dynamic changes in space sizes. The larger spaces are more public areas, and as we go into the inner areas there are enclosed individual study carrels/ workdesks.

THE LARGER SPACES ARE MORE PUBLIC AREAS, AND AS WE GO INTO THE INNER AREAS THERE ARE ENCLOSED INDIVIDUAL STUDY CARRELS/ WORKDESKS

LEAST NOISY AND SEMI-PUBLIC AREA: ENCLOSED STUDY AREA
