OSC was excited to attend the OASBO Annual conference in April and support member district, Twinsburg City Schools and Preferred Partner GARDINER during their session “Improving Building Operations, Monitoring IAQ & Enhancing the Learning Environment.” GARDINER has helped dozens of districts analyze data in an effort to evaluate and prioritize actions that improve air quality at the root cause. Continuous validation of operation can confirm that your facility is operating to ASHRAE recommendations. Some highlights and quick facts from the session: • Four in 10 public school districts do not have a long-term facility plan. • The US Government Accountability Office (US GAO) estimates that 41% of public school districts need to update HVAC systems in at least half of their school buildings. • Maintaining and/or replacing building equipment and systems reactively can increase costs 35-45%. • Nearly 50% of all schools in the US have unsatisfactory indoor air quality (IAQ) according to US GAO. • Poorly ventilated classrooms have been shown to correlate to increased absenteeism and a 5% decrease in “power of attention.” • K-12 school districts spend over $6 Billion annually on energy, more than on computers and textbooks combined. The US EPA estimates that as much as 30% of a district’s total energy is used inefficiently or unnecessarily. • Every year, districts across the state experience school closures in extreme weather due to HVAC system failures. One study showed that pass rates for math & reading tests fell by .5% per unscheduled closure. • Numerous studies have shown the impact that occupant comfort has on student performance. Without effective air conditioning, a study showed that taking an exam on a 90F day vs. a 75F day resulted in a 12.3% increase in likelihood of test failure. In the case for Twinsburg, the district was able to evaluate air changes per hour (ACH) based on design conditions. Using the results in the form of a “Space Comfort Score Card,” Twinsburg took informed and corrective action to increase air quality and overall comfort conditions across the district.

GCSSA Year-End Luncheon taking place on June 6

According to GARDINER’s “EnergyStar Benchmarking,” Twinsburg was able to visualize $277K in potential savings before the project even began. The district was also able to Twinsburg Business Manager, Chad Welker and Dave Smith off-set costs using federal ESSER funding. with GARDINER host OASBO session on April 11 in Columbus

“The data is already there,” said Twinsburg Business Manager Chad Welker. “Now we have a way to analyze it and work in a more proactive sense vs. a reactive sense.”
