Dental Nursing

Apprenticeship Level 3 Delivered by Gloucestershire College This apprenticeship standard is an excellent route to train as a dental nurse and to achieve the qualified standard required by the General Dental Council (GDC). Dental nurses provide support to dentists, dental therapists, hygienists and technicians. This apprenticeship offers the opportunity to learn in a structured learning environment whilst simultaneously learning in the workplace. Learners will gain valuable hands on experience, making a significant contribution to a dental practice.

Delivery model and duration:

Qualification: Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing (QCF)

College programme delivery will be Tuesday 15:00-20:00 running every three weeks at Gloucestershire College, Cheltenham campus.

Assessment will take place in the workplace (number of visits will vary depending on each individual).

Duration: 24 months to include 4-6 months for end point assessment

Ideal for:

• Individuals pursuing a career in Dental Nursing • Those who wish to obtain professional registration with the GDC

• Individuals working in other areas of dentistry such as orthodontics, cosmetic surgery and specialised services

Completers may want to progress to Other dental team roles, such as dental therapy and hygiene or related health

roles such as nursing and radiology, oral health promotion and training/educator roles.

Entry Criteria: • Four GCSE grades A*-C or 9-4 including English and mathematics

Dental Nursing

Apprenticeship Level 3 Delivered by Gloucestershire College End Point Assessment The End Point Assessment will test the entire Standard, and be undertaken as follows: • Synoptic project - The synoptic project will be assessed by an independent assessor(s).The project will demonstrate the skills, knowledge and behaviours required for a dental nurse. The word count for the project will be between 2,000 and 3,000 words. This will be graded pass/ distinction. The project will contribute 75% to the overall grade.

• Interview - This will be a third party, independent assessor, face-to-face review of the project and whole apprenticeship. The interview will be 25% of the overall grading.

Overview

First Aid essentials

This unit covers the practical administration of safe, prompt, effective first aid in emergency situations with an understanding of the role of the first aider including equipment, record keeping and basic hygiene.

Reducing risks to health and safety in the dental setting

This unit is about health and safety in a dental nurse’s day to day work. This includes identifying and dealing with risks and hazards in the workplace.

The role and responsibilities of a dental nurse

This unit introduces learners to the role and responsibilities of a dental nurse and the essential attributes and behaviours required to work in a professional manner.

Prepare and maintain environment, instruments and equipment for clinical dental procedures

This unit is about the methods of infection control within the general dental environment and the application of health and safety measures for clinical dental procedures.

Provide chairside support for the assessment of patients’ oral health.

This unit is about preparing the dental environment and supporting the operator during an oral health assessment, understanding of current legislation, maintenance of records to facilitate recording and processing oral health assessments.

Contribute to the production of dental images.

This unit is about providing support and resources for taking dental images, processing images and maintaining quality in accordance with relevant legislation and workplace policies.

Provide chairside support for the prevention and control of periodontal disease and caries and the restoration of cavities.

This unit is about preparing the dental environment and assisting the operator during a variety of preventative and restorative dental procedures.

Provide chairside support for the provision of fixed and removable prostheses.

This unit is about providing support to the patient and the operator during the provision of fixed and removable prostheses and orthodontic appliances.

Provide chairside support for non-surgical endodontic treatment

The unit is linked to practical skills and understanding of how to prepare the clinical dental environment for non-surgical endodontic treatment.

Provide chairside support for the extraction of teeth and minor oral surgery

The unit focuses on the requirement to prepare the patient and the dental environment for extractions and minor oral surgery and to provide support to the operator throughout all stages of treatment.

Provide information and support to patients on the protection of their oral health

This unit focuses on providing patients with oral health information and advice which is tailored to respond to the patient’s need.

Management of oral health diseases and dental procedures

This unit is about the aetiology and progression of oral disease, methods of prevention and the stages of general dental procedures completed during the management of oral disease.
