Community Education–Welcome How to use this (Lifelong Learning Guide) This guide is arranged in sections, by category. In many cases classes/workshops that apply to several categories are crosslisted in each relevant section. Each section/category corresponds with a color: Personal Enrichment, pgs. 8-21. This section includes workshops and classes in areas such as Art, Dance, Computers and others that people take primarily for enjoyment and self-development. In many cases these classes serve other purposes as well, but they are primarily for self-enrichment. Workforce Development, pgs. 22-26. This section is made up of classes and workshops designed primarily for working people who are looking to enhance their on-the-job skills or to gain access to a new field or a new aspect of their current field. Health Care, pgs. 27-29. This section is made up of classes and workshops designed for the very industry-specific needs of aspiring and current health care professionals. Many classes are approved for mandatory continuing educational requirements, while others provide pre-licensure or pre-certification preparation for those looking to enter a health care field. Online Learning, pgs. 30-33. Courses in this section are all delivered via the internet, although some include textbooks and other materials. Most are asynchronous, that is you can do the work at any time. A few are synchronous, which means that you have to “attend” your online session “live” at a set time. All require an internet connection. Blended Classes, pgs. 34-35. These classes and workshops are offered in collaboration with GCC academic departments and combine credit-free students from the community in the same classroom learning experience with GCC for-credit students. Pioneer Valley Institute, pgs. 36-37. PVI programs highlight a variety of regional topics. They are usually single sessions, and are held at a variety of locations throughout the Pioneer Valley. All programs are open to the public at a modest cost. Senior Symposia, pgs. 38-39. These symposia are offered for those fifty years of age and older on a variety of topics, usually in single sessions, and are held exclusively at the GCC Downtown Center, 270 Main Street. All symposia are $10/session. Online registration is not available for these symposia.

Assess the condition of a gravestone and several methods for recording inscriptions and epitaphs. Instructor: Mark Newey The International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) is used by many states to govern base building code and energy conservation programs. The most recent version of the code, IECC 2012, includes some challenging new standards, especially those for building air tightness and duct leakage. This 2-hour workshop provides an overview of the major requirements of IECC 2012 and some interpretation of what these new standards will mean in practice. What will builders have to do to comply with the new requirements? How will the standards affect HVAC contractors and code officials? The parking area is at the top of the hill on the east side of the road. Please be aware of the possible construction and detours at the new rotary at Atkins Farm and leave extra time to get around it.

For nearly half the year, bark provides the best clue to tree identification. Become familiar with the characteristic bark of different trees in a different habitat and at a different stage of growth than we saw in the fall. Since there are now no leaves this is going to be a little more challenging.
Friday, April 26, 7 in the evening, GCC Dining Commons (tentative), Al Benjamin and Steve Winters Long before movies, TV, computer games, and the Internet were entertainment powerhouses, the local community band was our way to put a smile on our face and a lilt in our step. Please join Greenfield Military Band Director Al Benjamin and members of community bands throughout our region for an evening of fun music and stories from our Valley’s band past and vibrant present. Through the years community bands of our Valley have entertained thousands, taking part in World War I and World War II military parades, vaudeville shows, and county fairs. Our Valley bands still have active schedules, particularly in the summer. Come join us, and get a step up on the 2013 Summer Band Season! There is history in the sound of a community band. Serving the community since 1904, the Greenfield Military Band, in particular, has been recognized as being in the top 2% of the oldest continuing community bands in America. In the region, only the Shelburne Falls Military Band is older.
Mount Toby Spring Walk Sunday, April 28, 10 to 3 pm, Nancy Goodman, $5 entry, current PVI members & kids under 12 free Come enjoy an early spring walk up the eastern side of Mt Toby. We will be checking out any plants or wildflowers we find along the way. Mt Toby has some interesting plants which are different from the surrounding area because of the geology of this particular range. We will be looking at the changing habitats and discussing what might be causing these changes. Please dress warmly, bring rain gear and have plenty of water and a lunch. Bring binoculars as we will also check out trees we find along the way. We will be meeting at the old Ashram site now called Atticus Glass on Route 63 in Leverett MA. The parking area is on the west side of the road just north of a small cemetery & south of Montague Rd. There is limited parking here (about 10+) so if possible try and carpool as this is a popular hiking spot. If you are willing to carpool please contact Nancy Goodman at wildeyes@rcn.com and she will try and put people in touch with others. There will be an orange cone on the road at the entrance to the parking area.

Community Education–Pioneer VaIley Institute Spring into North Adams Saturday, June 15, a day-long bus trip with Richard Little, Bus will leave from GCC at 9 am A PVI TOUR to North Adams, featuring great scenery and geologic history of the Berkshires, the unique marble natural bridge and dam at Natural Bridge State Park, The Western Gateway Heritage State Park focusing on the Hoosac Tunnel history, and MassMoCA with one of the largest contemporary visual art exhibits in the US. Along the way we will discuss the stories behind the scenery of this fascinating region with geologist Richard Little. A bus option is available, at cost, with a minimum of 25 participants. Nasami Farm Perched Swamp Tree Exploration Saturday, June 29, 10 to 2 pm, North St, Whately, Nancy Goodman, naturalist. $5 entry, Current PVI members & kids free Nasami Farm, owned by the New England Wildflower Society, is home to a unique habitat, a Black Gum—Pin Oak—Swamp White Oak “perched” swamp. This is a swamp not directly connected to the water table, but perched above it on layers that prevent draining usually associated with old glacial lake beds. The Great Swamp, of which this property is a part, is one of the largest and best examples of a perched swamp left in Massachusetts. We will be looking mostly at the trees and their bark, but also checking out any wildflowers we might see. The trail is level and the distance covered about 2 to3 miles at an easy pace.

There are two other programs we are currently working on: Out of the Storm, a DVD documentary made by the Galford Lumber Company from West Virginia which contains many interviews with West Virginians and Northfield residents about the hurricane of 1938, known as “The Long Island Express”. The lumber company came to assist with the many downed trees, and as a result it is the story of the lifelong relationships that arose from marriages and moves. We will be looking for longtime Northfield residents who remember this event and are willing to join a panel to discuss it. The other program is A History of Logging on Brushy Mountain with Steve Puffer. Date, time and location to be announced.

Community Education–Senior Symposia Islam and Europe: A Millennium of Co-Existence Tuesday, February 5, 2-4 p.m.
Presenter: Walter Denny From approximately the year 1000 to the present day, the Muslim world and the European world south of the Pyrenees and along the Mediterranean have shared significant cultural, economic and intellectual interchanges. In an illustrated talk, Walter Denny will focus on material culture, both works of art and luxury goods, as objects of commerce and as reflections of East/West world views. Among other things, Denny will consider the consequences of the Crusades in both worlds; the bustling commerce between Renaissance Italian city states and the Levantine eastern Mediterranean; and exchanges between Europe and the Islamic cultures of Persia, Turkey, and Egypt in the early modern period. Finally, he will explore how this historical context helps us understand the East/West conflicts of the present day.
THE SENIOR SYMPOSIA PROGRAM The Senior Symposia Program at Greenfield Community College is a collaborative effort between GCC’s Office of Community Education and area senior citizens to provide a way for area seniors to continue their education in a format that best suits their needs, interests and resources. Walter B. Denny has been Professor of Art History at the University of Massachusetts since 1970. His research interests focus on Islamic art and architecture, and on the history of east/west artistic interchanges. Since 2007 he has served as Senior Consultant in the Department of Islamic Art at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City.
The Connecticut River Valley and the China Trade Wednesday, February 13, 2-4 p.m.
Presenter: Amanda Lange The lucrative 18th and 19th century China trade fed a brisk market for tea and exotic luxuries such as porcelain punch bowls, patterned silks, gilded lacquer ware, and ivory chess sets, many of them specifically designed to appeal to Western tastes. Research on the American China trade has focused mainly on the coastal cities, but this economic activity reached inland to the Connecticut River Valley. Drawing on objects from Old Deerfield’s extensive collection, Lang will illustrate that Valley inhabitants owned and consumed goods of the China trade. They also supplied outbound cargo (e.g. ginseng), sea captains, crew and travelers to vessels venturing to China and returning with treasures for Hartford and Wethersfield, Connecticut, as well as Northampton. Amanda Lange is Curator of Historic Interiors and Curatorial Department Chair at Historic Deerfield. She organized “The Canton Connection: Chinese Export Art at Historic Deerfield” in 2005 and authored its accompanying catalogue.

These sediments contain information about El Nino and the Southern Oscillation that today are major features of our climate system. Brigham-Grette will bring her focus up to the modern era and current issues of climate change. Julie Brigham-Grette is Professor of Geosciences at the University of Massachusetts. Her research interests are in the chronology of geologic systems, climate evolution, and the sea level history of the Arctic. At home she maintains an interest in the paleo-climatic history and drainage record of Glacial Lake Hitchcock and the Holocene evolution of the Connecticut River.
We the People or We the Corporations? Tuesday, March 5, 2-4 p.m.
Presenter: John Bonifaz In January 2010, the United States Supreme Court, in Citizens United v. FEC, ruled (5-4) that corporations are “people” with political rights, thereby unleashing hundreds of millions of corporate dollars in the past two election cycles. Justice John Paul Stevens, writing for the dissent, said the ruling was a “radical departure from what has been settled First Amendment law.” Since the Citizens United ruling, a growing movement has emerged across the country for a constitutional amendment to overturn the decision and to reclaim our democracy. John Bonifaz will discuss the serious and direct threat presented by the Citizens United ruling to American self-government and how we, as a people, might change this ruling with a 28th Amendment to the US Constitution. John Bonifaz has waged voting rights battles in the U.S. for nearly two decades. He is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Free Speech For People and was founder and director of the National Voting Rights Institute. A Harvard Law School graduate, Bonifaz received a MacArthur Foundation “genius” award in 1999.
So, you think you know Puccini? Two Thursdays, March 21 & 28, 2-4 p.m.
Presenter: William Fregosi Wagner is more intellectual and controversial; Verdi is more the great Italian icon; but Giacomo Puccini is almost certainly the world’s favorite opera composer. His operas are constantly performed. His beloved arias appear in film scores and TV commercials, one even making the 1950s pop charts. Yet popular as he is, much of his life is unknown to the public. A man of obsessive passions and an infuriating perfectionist whose life was haunted by tragedy, Puccini may have put more of his heart and soul into his works than any other composer. We’ll explore this complex, deeply felt artist’s life with special attention to the beauties of his lesser known operas. There will be recordings by the creators of their roles who worked directly with the composer, as well as by famous modern interpreters. We’ll also hear student compositions he incorporated into his great operas and unknown original passages cut from Madama Butterfly.

Helping Hands Monkeys Wednesday, April 3, 2-4 p.m.
Presenter: Megan Talbert Highly intelligent, adaptable and social, capuchin monkeys from South and Central America are natural “tool users,” using their hands to perform functional tasks and manipulate objects in ways no other assisting animal can. They can perform personal grooming, scratch an itch, retrieve juice from the refrigerator or operate a DVD player on request. For 33 years Helping Hands, a non-profit organization in Boston, has been raising and training these remarkable primates to assist people living with spinal cord injury or other mobility impairments. Using photos, film clips, and anecdotes, Megan Talbert will describe the program’s lengthy training and placement techniques, the incredible effects of the human-animal bond, and how the program evolved from an experimental project to providing services in 38 states. Megan Talbert became involved with Helping Hands in 1998 as a work-study student from Boston University and returned as a placement specialist. Executive Director since 2006, Megan has traveled the country bringing Helping Hands’ capuchin helper/companions to recipients.
Winslow Homer at the Clark Tuesday, April 9, 2-4 p.m.
Presenter: Marc Simpson One of the most significant of 19th century American artists, Winslow Homer is best known for his seascapes and landscapes in both oil and watercolor. His long career also included work in other media (drawing, etchings, wood engravings) and on a range of other subjects, including the Civil War. Art historian Marc Simpson will give us an overview of Homer’s remarkable career, focusing on a number of important items in the holdings of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown. He will also tell us how Robert Sterling Clark came to assemble the finest collection of Homer’s work of an individual in the 20th century. In the summer of 2013, the Clark will host a major exhibition of the work of Winslow Homer. Marc Simpson has been the Associate Director of the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art since 2000. He was Curator of American Art at the Clark, 2004-2009. His most recent work on Winslow Homer is an essay in Weatherbeaten: Winslow Homer and Maine (Portland Museum of Art, 2012).
