2018 Annual Report

Message from the President of Greenfield Community College You Belong Here, We All Belong Here. No other words encapsulate the essence of Greenfield Community College better than our motto:You Belong Here. Since 1962, GCC has been opening doors and creating opportunities for students and the community to reach their full human potential. Today, we continue to do that not only through the credentials and degrees that we offer, but also through lifelong learning courses and engagement with our surrounding communities. We have always understood what it means to be a college of the community and how to make everyone feel welcomed. Our students are diverse. They come from families where college-going is a legacy. Many are the first generation to ever attend college. Some excelled academically prior to coming to us. Others begin to realize their academic prowess in our small classrooms that provide individualized attention and with support from our varied student services. Some raised families and served our country before coming to us. At GCC, we are intentional about meeting students where they are and facilitating the journey of self-development in a caring environment. Our classrooms mirror the real world environments students encounter when they graduate and enter the workplace. The intellectual vitality of our campus, rigor of our academics, the range of student support services, and opportunities for student leadership are aspects of our identity in which we take great pride. Our students are both challenged and supported. Our educators are committed to developing the current and next generation of leaders to help us tackle complex environmental and social challenges, invent new technologies, and lead both locally and globally. As I begin my first year at the helm of this accomplished institution and great community asset, I realize that I stand on the shoulders of giants. Dr. Bob Pura left an incredible legacy, which I hope to build upon. Reading Excellence and Opportunity: The Story of Greenfield Community College by Dr. Arthur Shaw and his collaborators this summer, I was moved by the vision, leadership, and community effort that it took to establish the College. Our evolution continues. Our next challenge at GCC is to live our mission for the greatest number of people in the communities we serve. The populations that most need us often don’t think of themselves as being "college material" and come to us with great intellectual assets, but also need significant supports to succeed. An economically vibrant Franklin county and Pioneer Valley must provide all with the opportunity for socioeconomic mobility and it starts with education. GCC is committed to supporting our students and to reaching our full potential as a community. We have built a great legacy at GCC and stand out among our peers because of you.Your commitment to our College has made that possible.Your support of the College is an investment in our students and our community. Thank you for believing in Greenfield Community College. Thank you for believing in the human potential. All the best,

Yves Salomon-FernĂĄndez, Ph.D.

Student, Faculty/Staff & Alumni Recognition

Carrie Hale

Dovi Afesi

Jody Kasper '94

GCC student Carrie Hale was chosen as one of the select "29 Who Shine," a group of outstanding Massachusetts public college and university graduates honored by the Department of Higher Education at the Massachusetts State House.

Dovi Afesi, who passed away in 2016, made an impact on GCC during his many years teaching history at the College. In recognition, GCC created the Dovi Afesi Lecture Series in his honor. Dovi was passionate about promoting racial justice and helping students understand how history impacts their daily lives.

The 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to Jody Kasper, Class of 1994. Jody was nominated for the award by her partner, Melissa Lake.

Carrie epitomizes the student inspired and transformed by the power of education and opportunity afforded by our community colleges. Discovering her ability in developmental math inthe spring of 2017, she flew through the selfpaced classes and finished Calculus in the fall with A’s! In her words, "I needed to see what math was going to do next. Even when it’s hard, I have never felt like bailing or that I won’t be wowed when I get through the frustration." She’s now an engineering major. Carrie serves on GCC’s Board of Trustees as a student representative, is a member of the Student Senate, and acts as liaison between the two governing bodies. She also sat on the presidential search committee in the spring, is a Peer Tutor in Math and Latin, an occasional Scribe for students with disabilities, a Phi Theta Kappa officer in the Honor Society an Orientation Leader, all while maintaining a GPA of 3.97! She was also the recipient of the Edwin C. Peck Mathematics Faculty Award, 2018, the Mario Rambissoon Engineering Faculty Scholarship, 2018 and the E2S5 Scholarship, 2018.

As he challenged everyone at GCC to be politically, historically, and ethically aware, it is fitting that the first lecture in the series was "The Prisonization of America: Racial and Socio-Economic Disparities in the Age of Equal Rights," The lecture highlighted the grossly disproportionate number of people of color, especially African-Americans, and the poor who are incarcerated pursuant to "tough-on-crime" and "drug war" policies in the United States. Dovi was born in Ghana in western Africa and studied at Clark University and Michigan State University. He taught at the University of Massachusetts Amherst for several years before he began teaching history at GCC in 2000. His teaching included a focus on African and African-American history. To memorialize his legacy and impact on GCC, his friends and colleagues planted a tree in his memory. Reflecting on Dovi and his work, GCC’s Dean of Humanities Leo Hwang said, "Dovi was someone who could translate history into a kind of living story that students could relate to and understand."

Jody Kasper is the Chief of Police in Northampton, MA, where she has been on the force for over 20 years. Chief Kasper worked her way up through the ranks, beginning as a Patrol Officer in 1998. When Jody Kasper was about to graduate from high school, she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do. "I had fine grades, but I didn’t know if I wanted to go to college," Kasper said. She spoke to her high school guidance counselor, telling her she didn’t want to be in a big city or be on a big campus. She was told that Greenfield Community College might be a good fit for her. It was. After graduating from GCC in '94, Chief Kasper transferred to Westfield State University, where she graduated with dual Bachelor’s degrees in psychology and criminal justice. She later received two Master’s degrees from WSU –in criminal justice and in public administration. When receiving her award, she said about GCC, "I will continue to sing the praises of this incredibly wonderful place." Throughout her career Jody has won numerous awards and citations. She has dedicated herself to the betterment of the police force and strengthening community relations.
