GREATER BURLINGTON YMCA Financial assistance is available for all programs

The Greater Burlington YMCA is a non-profit organization with a mission to build a strong community by involving youth, adults and families in programs and activities that develop spirit, mind and body.

HOURS Monday – Thursday: 6:00am – 9:00pm Friday: 6:00am – 8:00pm Saturday: 8:00am – 6:00pm Sunday: 8:00am – 6:00pm

Dear Members and Community, Recently, the YMCA of the USA held its first General Assembly in four years. Y staff and volunteers from Hawaii to Maine came together to be energized, share ideas, learn, and celebrate the impact the Y movement has in communities across the country. If successful, gatherings such as these provide fresh perspective, leave us with some pearls of wisdom, and spark fresh thinking. I wanted to share

just a few takeaways that are applicable beyond the Y world. Speaker Eric Bailiey shared insights into “the illusion of certain-

ty” and caused us to rethink conversations on bias, diversity, and privilege. His remarks included a few simple exercises; counting how many times the letter “f” appeared in two short sentences and whether we could pick out the Apple logo from a line-up of options. Simple tasks, right? We thought so. Each time, the audience expressed overwhelming confidence in our answers and each time, a majority of us were wrong. So, what might we be missing in conversations about race, equity, and bias, blocked by our own views as to what must be certain?

Challenging the audience to determine how we can better lead ourselves and inspire others, Ryan Leak spoke about personal leadership, leading yourself before leading others. He urged us to ask ourselves how we can be better and to invite those in our life to share their honest views on this question. He also noted that he regularly asks himself the question, “Who am I paving the way for?” He referred to this as the DEI question. There was also the potential question, “What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail!” That’s a pretty freeing question, I think. Behavioral scientist Nicholas Epley provided a call to action, if you will. Study after study demonstrates how the psychological barriers we erect cause us to underestimate the value of social interactions. Rather than strike up a conversation with the person in the seat next to you or drop someone a note of thanks, appreciation, or sympathy, we worry about how it will be received and fail to act. But the evidence is in, and those actions overwhelmingly have benefits for you and the recipient. So, start that conversation and send that note! We benefitted a great deal from these sagacious tidbits, and we hope you found some value in them, as well.
