As the crisp air of autumn returns and the leaves begin to change, we welcome you to another exciting season with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture. Fall is a time of transformation, and here in Gaithersburg, it's also a time for connection, celebration, and continued discovery.

In this guide, you’ll find a wide array of programs, events, and activities designed for all ages and interests. Whether you're looking to join a fitness class, explore your creativity, attend a community festival, or simply enjoy the outdoors in one of our beautiful parks, there’s something here for everyone.

We are especially proud of the dedicated staff, instructors, and volunteers who bring our programs to life. Their energy, passion, and commitment to service are the foundation of everything we do. This season, we continue to focus on creating inclusive, welcoming spaces where our community can grow together and thrive.

MISSION STATEMENT

We provide quality parks, well-planned, sustainable facilities and diverse cultural, artistic and recreational opportunities for all ages and interests to promote the health and wellbeing of residents and visitors.

Don’t miss National Night Out, a free event, where safety meets community with crafts, games, line dancing, and representatives from various support services, such as financial assistance programs, food bank information, health screenings, and legal advice.

87TH LABOR DAY PARADE

Celebrate the unofficial end of summer at the 87th Annual Labor Day Parade in Gaithersburg! Enjoy a festive lineup featuring high school marching bands, dance groups, costumed characters, antique cars and fire engines, equestrian units, clowns, and more as they make their way down East Diamond and Russell Avenues.

The entire community is invited to join the City of Gaithersburg for its annual Veterans Day Observance on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. This special ceremony honors and recognizes all U.S. military personnel for their vital role in safeguarding our nation and future. The patriotic program will include remarks and music to commemorate the occasion, concluding with a solemn wreathlaying ceremony. City officials and members of local veterans groups will be present to pay tribute to those who have served in all branches of the military.

GROUP SKATEBOARDING LESSONS

A waiver must be signed prior to the first lesson. Following an assessment by our instructors, participants are assigned to a unit with skaters of a similar skill-set. Beginner instruction is designed for skateboarders who can maneuver on open flat surfaces. Intermediate instruction is intended for skaters who have some experience in a skate park. Students are encouraged to progress at their own rate through a combination of group and one-on-one instruction.

The Skate Park is open with FREE ADMISSION! The park offers more than 12,000 square feet of ramps and structures for your skating pleasure. Skateboarders, in-line skaters and BMX bikers are welcome. Take advantage of lessons, clinics, party rentals, competitions and other special events.

Please Note: Participants are required to have a signed waiver on file (parent/guardian signature if under 18) before skating.

SPORTS

All programs are operated with the goal of providing a fun-filled and safe experience for every participant. We attempt to develop fundamental skills while teaching and exposing players to good sportsmanship, fair play and respect for all participants. A very low key approach to competition is encouraged. We ask all parents to be supportive of their child's active participation.

ENGAGING THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL

The Benjamin Gaither Center is the place for active adults who want to pursue their fitness goals, hobbies, learn new skills, make new friends, and squeeze more joy out of life. The facility features a computer lab, billiards room, fitness facility, lecture room, library, and dining room. Take advantage of our state-of-the-art fitness equipment, computer classes, cultural and social activities.

FITNESS ZONE - BOHRER PARK

Maintaining a healthy routine couldn’t be easier with our strength training and cardiovascular equipment, mats and locker rooms. We offer reasonable rates and a variety of membership plans.

The Fitness Zone is open to everyone 16 years of age or older. Teens 13 – 15 are welcome after completing a fitness orientation.

All participants must check in at reception counter.

A variety of activities and field trips for children in grades 1 - 5 offered on MCPS professional days and half days. Below is the tentative schedule of activities. Registration opens 3 weeks before each trip. Register online or at the Activity Center.

GAITHERSBURG YOUTH CLUB

GYC MEMBERSHIP

REGISTRATION

Register online at www.gaithersburgMD.gov/RecXpress. Students in Grades 6 - 8 can obtain registration forms at the GYC or school upon request.

GYC - One Year Membership Fee

$25 Residents / $30 Nonresidents

Your membership is good for one year from the date you sign up.

MEMBERSHIP CARDS

GYC members will receive a membership card. The student MUST show his/her card to ride the GYC Shuttle and participate at the Youth Centers.

There is an additional $5 charge to replace a lost card.

YOUTH CENTERS

GYC members have access to the Olde Towne and Robertson Park Youth Centers. These are Recreational Centers where members are required to sign in, but may leave at anytime during hours of operation.

A City shuttle to the Youth Centers is provided after school for GYC members at the following schools:

Kids can get homework help every day! GYC staff will be available for anyone who needs help with assignments.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM

If any students need service learning (SSL) hours, send them our way. GYC members have opportunities to earn SSL hours and have fun every month.

ENVIRONMENTAL FUN

The Youth Centers are GREEN BUILDINGS. Great learning activities go hand-in-hand with their environmentally-friendly features.

GYC STUDIOS

Educational programming introduces students to our music recording equipment and band room at the Olde Towne Youth Center.

GYC TURKEY BOWL

Monday, November 24 • 1:30 – 5 PM at the Robertson Park Turf Field

Friends and families are invited to the annual OTYC vs RPYC Flag Football Turkey Bowl. The winning team gets to take home the coveted GYC Turkey Bowl Title Belt.

Entire pool is open for recreational use, including one to three lap lanes, shallow end of main pool, and teach pool. Visit the website for designated open deep water well and diving board times. One to three lap lanes available during all recreational swim periods.

Water Adjustment - Bubblers - Ages 6 months to 3 years

This class is for children 6 months to 3 years old and a parent. Objective: To teach parents how to work with their child in an aquatic environment, to create a positive water experience for young children, and to promote interest in participating in future swim lessons. Participants must have an adult companion and wear swim diapers and waterproof pants if they are not potty trained.

Bone Builders

Bone Builders is a free, volunteer-led exercise program for ages 55+ in partnership with the Montgomery County Departments of Recreation and Health and Human Services, and the RSVP volunteer program. Classes held twice a week are designed to increase bone density. Participants use ankle and hand weights, and participate in warm-up, cool-down and balance exercises. The class relies upon weight training and balance exercises to protect against fractures caused by osteoporosis by increasing muscular strength, balance and bone density.

CLASS REGISTRATION BEGINS

RESIDENTS: JULY 28, 2025

All resident internet, mail-in and walk-in registrations will be processed in the order in which they are received beginning July 28.

NONRESIDENTS: JULY 30, 2025

All nonresident (persons residing outside Gaithersburg corporate City limits) internet, mail-in and walk-in registrations will be processed in the order in which they are received beginning July 30.

WHO IS A RESIDENT?

All persons who reside within Gaithersburg’s corporate City limits are residents. An address lookup map is available on the City's website.

NOTIFICATION

If the class you registered for is full, please place your name on the wait list. We may be able to form another class. Many classes quickly fill to capacity. Others are cancelled several days before the start date if they are under-enrolled. Therefore, please register during the registration period to allow for efficient organization of the classes.

ENROLLMENT

All students enrolling in preschool and youth classes should be the age indicated by the start of the class. Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture reserves the right to remove any participant from a class who is not of proper age, maturity, skill level or who inhibits the progress of the class or its members in any way. In this case, refunds will be issued for remaining classes. Signature of parent or guardian is required for participants under 18 years old.

OLDER ADULTS

City of Gaithersburg residents who are 55 or older are invited to take classes at the indicated Senior Resident (SR) rate listed under select classes.

REFUND

Withdrawal/refund requests must be submitted in writing or email to ParksRec@gaithersburgMD.gov. Withdrawal/refund requests received before start of program will be refunded less a $10 processing fee. Requests received on or after start date will be prorated based on the date written notice is received and a $10 processing fee will be applied. Full refunds will be made when classes are cancelled due to insufficient registration.

Note: No refunds 14 days prior to start of program for many activities. Check website for detailed information.

CANCELATIONS

In the event of inclement weather conditions or emergencies, call 240-805-1148. Classes held in schools will be canceled on days schools are closed for holidays and emergencies.
