What do you want to do? That question lies at the core of who we are as an organization. We believe in the value of reshaping what it means to be successful by normalizing career paths that don’t necessarily include a college degree. We need thinkers, but we also need doers. We need mechanics and welders, graphic designers and contractors.

A well planned, well developed, and well supported workforce is better equipped to respond to multiple challenges in our communities and ensure the positive impact of investments in social issues.

Choosing a career as a teen is incredibly stressful. Most of the careers they are familiar with are limited to those of their parents and immediate mentors. That’s why we rely on a series of

In this stage we connect teens

Finally we leverage local partnerships to create viable paid and unpaid career internships with industries specific to the needs of the Napa Valley. These internships are facilitated by the club but orchestrated independently between the business and teens who are taught how to prepare a resume and interview. This ensures that teens get an independent view on a viable career paths and first hand knowledge as to whether the career is of interest to them upon graduation.

“It feels like everyone is always asking me, ‘what’s next,’ and it stresses me out because I don’t know the answer to that question but its like I’m supposed to know.” As a teen you’re often told to start thinking about a career and what you want to do with your life, but when you have no tangible experience, it’s easy to focus on the people around you who seem successful. That’s why we partnered we partner with local businesses to create opportunities for teens to connect directly with local professionals.

The format allows teens to ask panelists about their experiences, their work, and how that work impacts their personal and professional lives. Teens then have an opportunity in round table discussions to ask more specific questions with regard to their interest. Please check out some examples below!

Seeing people in our community and learning more about local opportunities is critically important but there is a whole world of opportunity for our members. We supplement our in person panels with a third party software that allows our teens to explore career opportunities in ways that are story driven. These stories directly target and speak to members from minority communities and demonstrate the power of these opportunities but more how challenges associated with growing up in typically disenfranchised or economically depressed circumstances can translate into high yield outcomes. We bolster this with guided workshops on resume building, interview skills, and basic expectations of a new employee.

One of the biggest obstacles facing our teens is what comes next. Mirroring this concern is our local business industry who are desperate to hire engaged and committed employees. Enter the TransfrVR who in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County are piloting a VR workforce development program.

We facilitate connections between our teens and local career opportunities. These internships are coordinated independently between the teen and the local business. The Club also facilitates an on site job board so that teens are aware of new and interesting opportunities.

This opportunity stands alone as an independent priority but is just one of many options available to our teens every day after school. We provide teens with volunteer opportunities, academic support, and experiences that take them beyond Napa. We meet teens where they are and provide pathways through which they can be more.
