01 studio graduate 8570 | fall 2020 | clemson university advising professor dustin albright site columbia, sc project description The central spine of this building is meant to evoke a parallel experience with the natural tree line that runs through the center of the site. This spine serves as a central core for all the program spaces. These program blocks are then pulled apart to create exterior voids that run all the way through to the core, ensuring each space has direct access to natural elements. As this core is designed to parallel that tree line experience, the combination of large, double height, timber columns and clearstory windows is meant to mimic the feel of walking through a forest with light shining in through the tree tops. This, in addition to the courtyard voids cutting into the building, are both meant to exemplify the notion of bringing the outdoors indoors.

project description BetweenSpace is a design proposal that aims to restore a lost neighborhood area by integrating moments for community space with unique sustainable strategies that address light, water, air, and noise. The emphasis that is placed on the design of the “between space� is intended to encourage more of a focus on the journey and less on the destination, by creating moments to pause for natural community building opportunities on the site.

The overall urban development of this site focuses on three key design initiatives: Recover the preexisting city grid, Reestablish a connection to the river, and Respond to the new infrastructure. By designing interior and exterior spaces that respond to both the preexisting grid and the elevated highway, the goal is to reflect on the past while also adapting to the present.

project description As a result of our ever-changing lifestyles, “we’ve ended up with over-stuffed houses that attempt to anticipate every direction our lives could go, when what we need are flexible houses that can adapt to the lives were actually living.” This boisterous, and frankly unnecessary style of living promotes oversized, single-family homes taking up entire plots of land that could otherwise be utilized by multiple families.

Stemming from the basic design and function of an amoeba, a single-celled organism that is constantly conforming and changing shape, this triplex housing unit will provide flexible live/work spaces surrounding a central core. The dynamic, undulating form of the overall plan creates “niches” of public and private spaces for residents, promoting opportunities for social interaction, while also maintaining levels of privacy between families.

04 studio design V | fall 2016 | university of massachusetts advising professor ray mann | ajla aksamija site bosnia & herzegovina, sarajevo project description While surrounding the city with their magnificence and beauty, Sarajevo’s mountains stand tall as a symbol of strength and resilience, but also a cause for pain and suffering, as the city’s most beloved landmarks also came to serve as an aid in it’s fall. Paralleling this idea of strength and resilience is the sorrow that the water running along the site signifies. Not only was the retreating couple killed above this very water, but the city is also a collection spot for all the water runoff from the surrounding mountains.

The overall design of this building is meant to mimic that of the surrounding mountains that serve as a landmark to the city of Sarajevo. Visitors ascend up through different levels of gallery spaces by means of a series of ramps that run up along the side of the river. The main pedestrian corridor through the museum maintains a clear view to the river, as well as to the bridge, connecting the building with its surrounding history and reflecting on past events that took place in the city.
