When you experience the death of a loved one, you are in an exceptionally vulnerable state of mind. At this time of great distress, you are compelled to have contact with the funeral industry, which sadly has few laws governing it. In this seminar we will look past the exterior walls and go behind the closed doors for a frank review of the funeral and disposition industries. We will cover the services you need vs those which are offered, the various fees and charges, the differences between coffins and caskets and their pricing, and burial vs cremation. Understand the total costs and the request for an immediate deposit. Funeral company branding and the differences between companies (highlighted by very recent events in Adelaide), prepaid funeral plans and trusts, common consumer pitfalls, your rights as a consumer and more are all covered in this comprehensive session. This is must-know information for those planning a funeral. Don’t die until you have been to this session!

TuTankHamen : LIFe & LegaC y 100 years «neW» 2022 marks the centenary of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen. The objects from the tomb are not only one of the most spectacular archaeological finds of all time but also one of the most iconic symbols of ancient Egypt. The tomb of Tutankhamen was discovered by Howard Carter 100 years ago. A presentation on this King will be given to celebrate this occasion. The talk will cover the excitement and subsequent dramas of the discovery and excavation of the tomb. The life of Tutankhamen will be placed in context with a summary of the life of the King and the times into which he was born. Finally, the effect of the discovery of the “boy king” on Egyptology will be discussed. Lecturer Alex Kennedy has visited Egypt on six occasions and has seen sites such as El-Amarna, the site of Tutankhamen’s birth and upbringing, his tomb in the valley of the Kings, and the temples of Karnak and Luxor where there is evidence of his building activities. He has a Masters degree in Coptic studies, a Graduate Certificate in Ancient Egypt and a Masters in Ancient History at Macquarie University.

Whether on top of the hill or along Melbourne Street, German Australians lived and made their mark in North Adelaide. Take a jaunt through North Adelaide’s shady streets and discover its German ‘unterbelly’. These easy two-hour walking tours are designed to uncover forgotten history, with just a touch of humour.

The Roman legions were the greatest killing machine of their era, conquering and garrisoning an area of some 1,700,000 sq miles. They offered paradoxically an increased life expectancy for their recruits who hailed from the peasantry in the Italian hinterland and the destitute in the Roman slums. Now they lived in clean quarters and had 3 proper meals per day. This course also examines how in learning from the peoples they conquered they transformed Rome from being just a small town built on 7 hills to one where reputedly all roads led. It also compares with today the psychiatric issues they faced in retirement and how veterans were provided for by the government.

When Russians invaded the Crimea, a part of the Ukraine, in 1853, Britain, France and Turkey declared war. SA named several towns and villages after the major battles - Balaklava, Alma, Inkerman and Malakoff which we visit. South Australia has the only Australian memorial to the Crimean War and some colonials fought with the British in the Crimea. SA also has a pair of Russian cannons used in the Crimean conflict. Fear of Russian invaders emerged in the 1870s and this was mainly responsible for the building of Fort Glanville in 1880. This course explores migration to Australia over the course of our nation’s history. It begins by looking at the first migration to Australia - that of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This is followed by colonisation, and the mass migration of convict and free settlers, predominately from the British Isles. It then moves into the 19th and 20th centuries, looking at migration surrounding key events, such as the Gold Rush, the White Australia Policy, WWI, WWII, and the Cold War. It finishes with a look at the last 20 years, and projections of the future of Australian migration.

The aim of this course is to introduce Roman History to people who have always been interested in it, but feel lost and don’t know where to start. We look at the 3 periods: Rome Under the 7 Kings, Rome Under the Republic and Rome Under the Empire. It examines the role played by key personalities such as Hannibal, Spartacus, Julius Caesar and the emperors as well as the social causes behind the main events. Finally, it analyses the overwhelming influence Roman society has had on our own. At the end of the course people will then be in a position to further their knowledge by tackling the Roman writers and the works of modern specialists.

Derek Bromley, South Australia -still imprisoned after 38 years! “The case of Derek Bromley will prove to be one of the most controversial in Australia’s legal history. An aboriginal man who was convicted of murder in 1984 on the basis of evidence which was manifestly false and misleading. We have been attempting for the last 20 years to have this case reviewed. A new opportunity to do that arose when we were able to establish a new right of appeal in SA in 2013. The appeal court refused him leave to appeal on the grounds which we can confidently state were misconceived and contrary to established legal principles”.

The case of Susan Neill-Fraser, Tasmania, wrongly convicted of murder. “An elderly man went missing one weekend from his boat. His elderly wife was soon after convicted of his murder. She was supposed to have attacked him, bludgeoned him to death, then moved his body upstairs onto the deck, and then bundled him and a heavy fire extinguisher over the side into a dinghy. She is then said to have taken the boat into deeper waters and then bundled him and the heavy extinguisher over the side to get rid of him. There was no evidence to support any of this and the prosecution case was startling in its absurdity.” Bob Moles will discuss this case which has now been prepared to go to the High Court.

The tragedy of Kathleen Folbigg NSW. Ms Folbigg was wrongly convicted of the murder of her four babies. It was said that she had murdered each of her babies in turn by smothering them - although there was no evidence to support this. The prosecutor said it was just as likely that ‘pigs might fly’ as the babies having died from any other cause. She has been reviled as one of Australia’s worst serial killers. But has it all been a tragic mistake? Ms Folbigg now has over 100 of the world’s leading experts who say they have identified the genetic defect that caused the babies deaths including Nobel Laureates and Australia’s leading scientists. Despite the overwhelming findings, Ms Folbigg still remains in prison after 18 years of solitary confinement. How can we (the legal system) be so cruel?
