Kweneng
K
weneng district is home to some of the country’s biggest villages. Botswana’s most populous village, Molepolole is the district’s administrative capital, home of Bakwena, the first tribe to convert to Christianity in Botswana with the help of the legendary missionary and explorer, David Livingstone. According to the 2011 Population and Housing Census preliminary results , Molepolole still retains its position as the biggest village in Botswana, with an estimated population size of almost 70 000. On the other hand, Mogoditshane which is always in the Kweneng district has jumped from a seventh position in 2001 to become the second biggest village in 2011 with a population of around 60 000.

The population increase has boosted the district’s business and investment opportunities. Kweneng now has more to offer. It has been growing rapidly with the establishment of shopping malls that carry major international stores, commercial banks as well as businesses emerging in and around the district. The district is awash with possiblilities considering its strategic placement and growing infrastructure. It is developing at a pace with up and coming suburbs leading to a semi migration into the district from city slickers who want some peace and quiet out in the country. The village of Gaphatshwa has seen the development of Botswana Housing Cooperation housing units while Mmopane Block 1 benefits from the world class Bokamoso Hospital and self development housing. The district is also a historical tourism hub that boasts of attractions such as rock paintings in Manyana village and the Kgosi Sechele I Museum, which was named after Kgosi Sechele I the then Bakwena Chief from 1833 to 1892, among many other monumental attractions. The museum was established out of local concern to preserve the cherished and fast perishing culture and historical sites in the region. Today the museum promotes local craft work and displays historical photographs, paintings and artifacts. Livingstone memorial and the ruins of David Livingston’s house and mission, which was built back in the 1840s are some of the rich historical sites that have made Kweneng a notable tourist destination both nationally and internationally. Burial sites for the forefathers of the tribe, Chiefs who founded the tribe when they settled on the land are also historical sites that beef up the district touristic sites that anyone can enjoy in Kweneng.
