As a catcher for the South Harrison Baseball program, Frank Tate led the Hawks through one of the winningest eras in the program’s history.

Now, 19 years later, Tate is repeating the feat as the team’s head coach.

The 2014 season will begin Tate’s second decade as head coach of South Harrison, the school he graduated from in 1995 after playing four years under then-head coach Brad Nutter. Tate finished his playing career with 49 wins, including being a part of the school’s only 20-win season in 1993.

Yet, as a head coach he has taken the program to another level. In just 10 seasons, Tate has led the team to two sectional championships (2009, 2010) including finishing one win away from reaching the state tournament for the first time in school history. In that Regional Championship game, which was held at South Harrison in 2009, the Hawks lost to eventual state champion Moorefield, 6-1 – the closest game

the Yellow Jackets played all postseason.

In 2011, Tate became the school’s winningest coach when he surpassed Nutter after winning his 105th career game in the opening round of the 2011 sectional tournament, claiming a 9-2 win over Doddridge County. Tate is the program’s all-time coaching leader in seasons coached (11), wins (127), playoff wins (18), and all-state players (24).

Tate enters the 2014 season with a 127-142 record, despite coaching 40-percent of his career games against Class-AA or Class-AAA opponents. Tate is 91-69 (.569) against Class-A competition, and is 5-2 all-time in the Little Kanawha Conference Tournament game, including winning the school’s first LKC Championship by claiming a 2-1 victory over Williamstown in 2009.

Tate has recorded at least 10 wins in every season he’s coached, and was named the Harrison County Coach of the Year in 2009. He also has served as the assistant coach for

Tate inherited a young and inexperienced team of just 10 players in his first season (above) and within two years, won 18 games in 2006 and had the Hawks ranked as high as No. 3 in Class-A in 2007.

the North-South All-Star Game in 2008 and 2009, having sent four players (Chris Bunnell, Travis Gawthrop, Chase Snyder, Gaige Evans) to the all-star competition.

The 2009 season is considered one of the finest seasons in the program’s history. That’s when Tate led the Hawks to the program’s first sectional championship since 1997 and the third regional appearance in the program’s history. Three players from the 2009 team – first baseman Craig Chipps (Fairmont State), pitcher Travis Gawthrop (Potomac State) and catcher Chase Snyder (Fairmont State) – went on to play collegiate baseball.

Gawthrop and Snyder also became the first pair of Hawk teammates to play in the North-South All-Star Game where the duo combined for five innings on the mound in Game 2, helping the North squad four-hit the South in a 1-0, 9-inning loss.

They were two of just three Class-A players who were invited to the game.

Tate took over in 2004, inheriting a young team of just 12 players and three seniors. In his first year, Tate led the Hawks to a 10-8 mark with wins over Class-A powerhouse Madonna and Class-AA and Harrison County rival Lincoln.

In his third season, Tate led his team to finish just two wins shy of becoming the second team in program history to record 20 wins, ending with 18 – the second most in a single season in South Harrison history. The team started the season 9-1 until a tough 3-0 loss to No. 1-ranked Pendleton County ended the

It was 2007 that may have been Tate’s finest season. The coach took a young group which consisted of just three seniors to a No. 4 ranking in the Class-A Associated

By 2009, Tate’s squad had developed into one of the best in Class-A. The Hawks finished 2009 with a 14-9 record and Tate’s first sectional championship. South Harrison advanced all the way to the Regional Championship, before falling to the eventual state champions. Tate was named Harrison County Coach of the Year. One year later, Tate led the Hawks to another sectional championship.

The win was one of three upsets of ranked opponents in 2007 including a 10-5 victory over then-No. 6 AA Clay County and eventual Class-AA runner-up Grafton.

In 2013, despite regularly starting six freshmen and sophomores, Tate’s Hawks started the season 10-6 including sweeping Little Kanawha Conference powers Roane County and Wirt County, along with Class-AA Harrison County foe Lincoln. Four of the Hawks most used pitchers were freshmen in 2013. For 2014, South Harrison returns 100% of its pitcher’s wins from 2013, 97% of innings pitched, 73% of its RBIs, 65% of its hits,

and 61% of its runs scored, despite losing three everyday starters in seniors Tyler Childers, Justin Fridley and Gaige Evans, who went on to play at Alderson-Broaddus College.

Tate is not new to leading the program to success, however. As a catcher, Tate finished his Hawk career as a four-year letterman where he garnered all-Harrison County honors (Fr., Jr., Sr.), All-Big 10 Conference honors (Jr., Sr.) as well as Class-AA All-State honorable mention in 1995.

He led Harrison County in RBI and doubles as a senior, only one of two players in school history to accomplish that feat. Tate finished his career among the top-five in school history in home runs, doubles, and RBI. In football, he was a two-time all-County member and also earned All-Big 10 and All-State recognition.

In 1990 as a 13-year-old, Tate led his Harrison County Babe Ruth All-Star team to the National Championship Series where he finished the tournament with a .600 batting average and was named the tournament’s most outstanding hitter – one of only two West Virginians to ever win the award.

Journey into the South Harrison dugout following a Hawks’ game or practice and you will likely find South Harrison assistant coach Jeff Richards talking baseball.

It has become almost a tradition for Richards, who will beginning his 16th season with the South Harrison baseball program this season and his 37th year in the coaching profession. He’s the longest tenured coach in school history.

“The man has forgotten more about baseball that any of us players have ever known,” said former shortstop and outfielder Kris Fridley, who played four years under Richards. “Some of my favorite times were sitting in the dugout after practice talking baseball with Coach Tate and Coach Richards. But it usually evolved into more than just sports because they know being a coach is about more than baseball. I got a lot of advice for both baseball and life, and they may not know it, but our seasons together meant a lot to me.

“Even though my playing days are over, I always hope to

help out in any way I can, and I still talk baseball with them any time I get a chance.”

The 1971 graduate of South Harrison High School, who graduated as president of his senior class, has coached the Hawks baseball program on two different occasions and under three different head coaches. Beginning in 1998, Richards helped current Robert C. Byrd head baseball coach Brad Nutter for two years before helping Frank Lopez in 2000 and again in 2002.

Richards took over as head coach in 2003 where he led South Harrison to an 8-14 mark including a sectional semifinals appearance. He also helped nurture and develop future Hawk Class-A All-State players Mark Frum and Cory Morrison, who were freshmen at the time.

Since that season, Richards has coached along current head coach Frank Tate, who took over in 2004. Together, the pair have averaged 13 wins-per-season, featured two first-team all-state players, three first team all-Little Kanawha Conference

selections and 14 players earn firstteam all-Harrison County honors on 13 different occasions en route to helping make South Harrison was one the more respected Class-A programs in the state.

Richards has also help guide four players – Chris Bunnell, Travis Gawthrop, Chase Snyder, and Gaige Evans – to be selected to the NorthSouth All-Star Game while in 2009, Gawthrop was selected as the program’s first Little Kanawha Conference Player of the Year.

Catcher Chase Snyder earned LKC Hitter of the Year honors that same year.

“Every player wants to play for coaches like them,” Gawthrop said of Richards and Tate. “They will help you out anyway they can and it doesn’t matter if its on and off the field – if you have a problem, they’ll help you solve it.

“My four years playing for the Hawks under them couldn’t have been better.”

Richards has also served as South Harrison’s head wrestling and golf coach. He has also been an assistant high school

softball coach in 2001. He served as head middle school football coach for five years (1999-2003) where in 2002, he led the Hawks to a Harrison County Championship.

Richards was a four-year player for the Hawks under head coach John Jay (1968) and then Gary Barnette from 1969-1971.

Richards graduated from Fairmont State College in 1975 and currently resides in West Milford with his wife, Arline. They have two children. His oldest, Andrew, is a former all-Harrison County infielder for South Harrison who graduated in 1999.

Karson, meanwhile, is South Harrison’s head softball coach.

>>> MARK JONES 1st season

With a strong playing career already on his resume, Mark Jones enters his first season as assistant coach for the South Harrison Baseball Program.

A three-sport athlete in high school, the 2002 graduate of Notre Dame High School played baseball, basketball and football. He continued his baseball career at Alderson-Broaddus College in Phillippi, W.Va., where he was teammates with former South Harrison standouts Jerred Novotny, Tommy Cohen and Drew Toth. Jones was a middle-

infielder and pitcher for the Battlers before graduating in 2006.

Jones recently completed his second season as an assistant coach for the South Harrison basketball program under head coach Tom Sears. He has also been a two-year member of the South Harrison Football coaching staff under head coach Brad Jett. Previously, he was an assistant for South Harrison Middle School football for two seasons.

Jones earned his Bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in Secondary Education with a concentration in Mathematics from AldersonBroaddus. He currently teaches at South Harrison High School.

COACHES <<< JOHN JAY 1966 - 1968

RECORD: N/A 3 seasons The first coach in the history of the program, Jay led the Hawks in their first two seasons of existance and coached one of the program’s all-time bests - pitcher Earl Arbogast. Jay also served as the football coach and later became principal in 1968.

Jay graduated from Glenville State College and Marshall before earning his Master’s Degree from the University of Virginia.

GARY BARNETTE 1969 - 1975

RECORD: N/A 7 seasons A man who defined South Harrison as a football coach also coached Hawks baseball for 7 years after being transferred in 1968 from Connellsville High School (Pa.). Barnette was an all-conference center for the West Virginia Mountaineers in 1964 and a graduate of Dunbar High School. Barnette is the second winningest coach in Harrison County football history (190-117, 29 seasons) and led the Hawks to the 1976 State Championship game.

RON FRAGALE 1976 - 1978

RECORD: 7-23 3 seasons Fragale served as both South Harrison’s basketball and baseball coach during his time with the Hawks. He also coached the Washington Irving High School men’s basketball team. A 1974 graduate of West Virginia University, Fragale now serves as the Harrison County representative in the West Virginia House of Delegates, a position held from 1990-1998, and has currently held since 2000.

1980 SOUTH HARRISON HAWKS The 1980 team was the final team coached by John Conch, finishing 5-12.

JOHN CONCH 1979 - 1980

RECORD: 6-23 2 seasons Conch led the Hawks for two seasons, finishing 1-11 in 1979 before seeing improvement and ending 5-12 in his final season in 1980. The Hawks reached the sectional championship each season.

Conch coached the likes of Vickie Huffman, the first female player, standout pitcher Clay Stonestreet, and one of Harrison County’s leading hitters in 1980, Barry Stemple.

JOHN SCOTCHIE 1981 - 1989

RECORD: 56-110 9 seasons A former allWest Virginia Conference third baseman at SalemTeikyo College, Scotchie took over as a 23-year-old and, three seasons later, helped SHHS claim its first winning season and sectional championship in school history. Scotchie was named Harrison County Coach of the Year in 1983. After a brief absence, he returned to coaching under former SHHS head coach Brad Nutter at Robert C. Byrd High School.

BRUCE CAREY 1990 - 1991

RECORD: 11-32 2 seasons Carey, a longtime assistant under John Scotchie, took over the program in 1990 and helped the Hawks claim the sectional championship in his first season.

Carey went on to become one of Harrison County’s most successful football coaches at Bridgeport, where he compiled a 137-32 record in 13 seasons. He now coaches football at Robert C. Byrd. Carey was the head coach of Chad Drummond, SH baseball’s first Harrison County Athlete of the Year.

1999 SOUTH HARRISON HAWKS The 1999 team, which finished 16-11, was Nutterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s final team at South Harrison.

In Frank Lopezâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second season, the 2001 Hawks ended with an 8-14 record.

BRAD NUTTER 1992 - 1999

RECORD: 104-102 8 seasons Nutter took the South Harrison baseball program to another level in his eight seasons with the Hawks.

In just his second year, he led SH to its only 20-win season in school history and a sectional championship.

The 1980 graduate of Liberty High School and 1986 product of Fairmont State College led the Hawks to 4 sectional titles in his time in Lost Creek. He is now the head coach at Robert C. Byrd High School.

FRANK LOPEZ 2000 - 2002

RECORD: 24-43 3 seasons A longtime high school coach at many Harrison County schools, Lopez earned his 300th career high school baseball coaching win with the Hawks in 2001. Lopez coached the likes of future WVIAC home run leader Jerred Novotny and all-American Ben Hall. He has also coached baseball at Notre Dame High School as well as coaching softball at Lincoln and Bridgeport High School.

JEFF RICHARDS 2003

RECORD: 8-14 1 season Richards has spent 16 seasons with the South Harrison Baseball program, with 14 of those years coming as an assistant coach under Frank Lopez and current head coach Frank Tate. Richards has been with the Hawks for over 140 victories. As a head coach in 2003, Richards led South Harrison into its first season in the Mason-Dixon Conference and back into Class-A, finishing the year 8-14.

One of the finest baseball facilities in North Central West Virginia, South Harrison’s “Field of Dreams” was constructed prior to the start of the 1997 season. The facility, which was designed by the same company who designed Camden Yards - home of Major League Baseball’s Baltimore Orioles - held its first game on April 4, 1997. The Hawks won that game against Buffalo-Wayne 15-5, and have recorded 114 victories at the field since.

Former

BRIAN ELLIOTT South Harrison catcher Brian Elliott’s No. 17 became the first jersey number retired in the 47-year history of the program on June 13, 2009.

Elliott was an all-Harrison County catcher and a 4-year starter for the Hawks from 1984-to-1987. He was also a standout kicker for the South Harrison football team, where he was

selected to the all-Harrison County squad for three seasons.

On Aug. 3, 1995, Elliott was struck and killed by a drunk driver on his way home from work. Since, his parents Butch and Janet have been crucial members in the Mothers Against Drunk Driving organization at both the county and state level.

Through multiple fundraising efforts, the Elliotts have continually supported Hawk Baseball through donations from the Brian Elliott “Field of Dreams” fund.

Both were presented with a framed replica No. 17 jersey before the inaugural South Harrison Alumni Baseball Game in 2009.

THE DAVISSON BROTHERS Two members of the Clarksburg-based band The Davisson Brothers are former members of the South Harrison baseball program. The pair’s other brother, Mikie Davisson, played for the Hawks from 1995-98. The group has released hit singles such as “Big City Hillbilly” and “Foot Stompin’”, which reached No. 55 on the Billboard charts in 2009. In 2012, the group paired with former Major League Baseball All-Star player John Kruk to record the new intro song for ESPN’s Baseball Tonight, which is still being used by ESPN.

DRAFT PICK EARL ARBOGAST Described as a pitcher with a “blazing fastball”, Earl Arbogast became the first South Harrison baseball player selected in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft when he was selected 261st overall in the 14th round of the 1967 Draft by the Chicago Cubs.

On June 13, 1967, Cubs’ legendary general Manager John Holland and scout Frank DeMoss visited West Milford to officially sign the 17-year-old, who departed to pitch in the rookie league in Boise, Idaho one day later.

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound right-hander signed for an undisclosed bonus and also received a “good” salary and a four-year scholarship to a college of his choice.

In the minor leagues, Arbogast pitched head-to-head against future MLB Hall-ofFamer Vida Blue and played against a team coached by MLB Hall-of-Fame manager of

the Los Angeles Tommy LaSorda.

As a rookie, Arbogast played for Wheeling native George Freese for the Caldwell Cubs and finished third in the rookie league The 1976 Clarksburg Semi-Professional Baseball team, for games started for which Arbogast was the team’s No. 1 pitcher.

(12) and eighth in wins (5) as a 17-year-old.

In 1969 as a 20-year-old, Arbogast played for the Huron Cub out of Huron, South Dakota and led Class-A in innings pitched (114) and games started (16). He also finished third in complete games (8).

Returned back to Clarksburg area in 1976 to play semi-pro baseball for Clarksburg in the Central West Virginia League, whose home field was Frank Loria Memorial Field. Season tickets were $5.

ALL-AMERICAN JERRED NOVOTNY

One of the most powerful hitters in West Virginia history, Jerred Novotny broke the WVIAC record for home runs in a single season with 21 during the 2005 season after graduating from South Harrison in 2001. He was later selected as the third overall pick by the Gateway Grizzlies in the 2006 Frontier League Amateur Draft.

Novotny never played with the Grizzlies, instead signing with the Florence Freedom (Ky.) where he played right field as a 23-year-old.

Novotny played three seasons at AldersonBroaddus College (Phillipi, W.Va.) as a firstbaseman while he also played for the Battlers’ basketball team. During his record-breaking 2005 season, the right-hander led all Division-II hitters in slugging percentage (.945) and home runs-per-game (.53), earning a selection from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America NCAA All-American Honorable Mention team. He was a first-team All-WVIAC selection in 2003 and 2005.

Novotny was a first-team ClassAA All-State selection for SHHS in 2001 and represented the Hawks in the North-South All-Star Game, in which he finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI to earn MVP honors. He’s the only player to ever win the Harrison County Triple Crown or Big 10 Conference Triple Crown, which he earned by leading the county in batting average, homeruns and RBI in 2001.

Novotny finished second in South Harrison history by hitting 19 career home runs in just three seasons.

Novotny holds Hawk baseball records for career slugging percentage (.845), single-season home runs (10, 2000), single-season batting average (.528, 2001), single-game RBI (9, vs. Grafton in 2000). He holds the top two records for single season RBI – 47 in 2000 and 37 in 2001.

He also holds one pitching record – single game strikeouts – which he set in 2001 when he struckout 18 Grafton Bearcats in his final game on South Harrison’s Field of Dreams.

A USA Today All-American selection in 1999, Hall still leads the South Harrison record book in career home runs (27), RBI (102) and runs scored (94). He remains the only two-time Class-AA firstteam selection in school history. He played 4 years at AldersonBroaddus College where he was a 2nd-team all-WVIAC outfielder.

Gawthrop was named the 2012 Little Kanawha Conference Pitcher and Player of the Year, and finished his career as the Hawksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; all-time leader in wins (17), strikeouts (166), innings pitched (169 2/3), ERA (2.19) and complete games (14). He went on to pitch at Potomac State College.

MIKE JOHNSON 1990 - 1993

One of the most established athletes in Harrison County history, Johnson was named Harrison County Athlete and Baseball of the Year in 1993. That same season, he was named Big 10 Conference MVP and earned 1st-team Class-AA honors. He went on to become a standout shortstop at Potomac State College and Alderson-Broaddus College.
