In the early sixties, Marshall Mc Luhan, came out with the now seminal works, ”The Medium ls The Message" and “Understanding Media." ln these books, Mc Luhan provided exciting, and sometimes disquieting insights on the nature of the media arts (i.e., television, lm, advertising, print, etc). Primarily he believes that the way man uses, creates and disseminates information would develop ll a life of its own I7 — an existence, or Truth, that would transcend its creator's control. Today, as we stand on the threshold of the new millennium, Mc Luhan's words have become fullled prophecies.

The media, as we now experience it, truly is its own message. From simple tools of communication, it has evolved into a behemoth — a power driving the engines of world culture, politics, economics and philosophy. At the heart of it all is the concept of Globalization — a double-edge sword seen both as an opportunity and threat. More than just being a “big word”, globalization is touching modern man's lives through technologies that our grandfathers could never have dreamed of — cable and satellite channels that feed data from all quarters of the planet 24/7; the worldwide web providing bottomless thrills, as well as business and education opportunities; cellphones and text messaging that have pushed instant communication to the status of a new religion; the digital revolution making lm and video masters out of avid cinephiles from the penthouses of New York to the wilds of Africa.

We believe that Media is the substance of this global movement. A movement that, as mentioned above, can devour the unwitting or propel us into the heights of a new era of enlightenment. We believe that the power inherent in Media does not lie with white-collar bureaucrats, Madison Avenue spin-doctors or bloated yet hollow network giants. The power in media, as in all true things, lie in the vision and the efforts of its artists — the lmmakers, the video artists, the creative minds of advertising agencies, the resolute journalists and broadcasters.

As we celebrate the 17"‘ year of the tradition we call the GAWAD CCP, we reiterate our commitment to provide unswen/ing nourishment for young Filipino documentarists, animators, experimental and narrative lm and video makers.

At

some point in life, l thought documentary films were supposed to be educational.

And they still are. Eye-opening. That's what docus are supposed to be doing. Boring is what they're not supposed to be.

few days ago, a Filipina, Ramona Diaz, won in Robert Redford’s Sundance Film Festival. She won for Best Cinematography for the documentary on Imelda Marcos, which also won Best Documentary Award. I wonder what story she told and how she

Today, l watched for the second time Ditsi Carolino's awardwinning "Minsan Lang Sila Bata." Again, it touched a nerve and perhaps caused a twitch that will hopefully graduate to a calculated and reasonable action -—to do something to help children like the children whose stories she told.

Ditsi told the story of Tikboy, 9 who works in an abattoir where blood never stops flowing. Deep into the night and well into the wee hours of the morning, this young boy stands on the muck-filled floor, diligently shaving hairs from the skins of freshly slaughtered pigs, amidst the bloody mayhem and slaughter. These are hairs that machines were unable to remove in the cleaning process, hair on the snout, hair in the ears, hair under the tummy. We meet Dio, 14, another child in this murderous hell of a place. What do he and Tikboy reap from their labor here? Fat that they must scrape off pig's skins and fat they must cut from the necks of pigs, and if they are lucky, pork meat. This they sell at Carbon market, Cebu’s biggest market, for P70 at most on a good day. There are a million other Dios in the country, says Ditsi. Most of them are in the provinces, in the bukid, in the fields and farms.

Dio and Tikboy are just two of Ditsi’s subjects. There is Dalena, a little wisp of a girl who toils in the rich sugar cane fields of Leyte. At 10, she is already "tired of life”. In Dapitan's Pulauan Port, a band of boys play tumbang preso in the afternoon sun. It's a prelude to a night of backbreaking work, carrying 40-kilo sacks of portland cement on their heads and unloading them on the dock. By mid-day of the next day, these boys are powdered head to toe with cement dust, their tired faces pallid, their nostrils ringed with gray. And when workis done, they down glasses of tuba, in the belief that it will wash out the cement dust from their lungs.

Ditsi asks: ls this situation right? That children working is acceptable in our country just because ours is a poor country. Don't our children have the right to play, study and to be cared for? These are hard-hitting questions, questions that ram straight at the solar plexus. And many times, a viewer, in all his "innocence", or perhaps apathy or

disinterestness, and sheltered existence, is left breathless, knowing not what to say, much less do.

Ditsi’s film won 1“ Prize in the video documentary category of the 1 993 Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video. lt also won a special prize for best work for/by and on children. Ditsi has done other films, also on children's issues. She says she knows she can't be a journalist ever, because it seems, she cannot distance herself from her subjects.

She has placed herself in her work, becoming very much a part of it as we sense in her film.

Documentaries like Ditsi’s are painful to watch. But not all documentaries cause grief. Or maybe they don't mean to. But what must a documentary be?

First, it must be one that tells a story. lt must enlighten the mind, touch the heart and move the spirit. lt must be sincere in its intention. True is one thing it should be.

Sometimes, it can be lighthearted and funny. Sometimes, sad, like this one of Ditsi’s.

The Documentary has the privilege of power. Being that which belongs to what we know as

“media", it

has a

power inherent to it.

Documentaries usually deal with contemporary social concerns, problems like poverty, race, exploitation, violence, etc. They deal with issues not usually addressed in mainstream media. Documentaries also offer new perspectives on such issues and have the power to inform, provoke and illuminate. Viewers who are informed, provoked and enlightened, someone wrote, have the potential to change social policy.

l read somewhere on the Internet that documentary film is gaining a wider audience, and productions like Bowling for Columbine, Spellbound and Capturing the Friedman's are proof that documentary film can be successful too at the box office. l wonder how our Filipino documentary filmmakers are doing.

There are 150 plus entries in this year's lka-1 7 Gawad CCP Para Sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video, 33 of which are entries in the documentary category. These works, l like to think, represent the best of our young independent documentary filmmakers who continue to push the boundaries of cinema verite in this country.

So, let me ask again— when was the last time you watched a documentary film?

According to J,DR,!i!,,,,Red The advent of digital video nowadays has provided convenience, not to mention, wonders for many videographers. Gone are the days of carrying heavy studio-type video cameras as well as lighting equipment and other accessories. But thanks to innovations in technology, they are overtaken by sleeker mini-camcorders with built-in light and stuff. For tech-savvy Pinoys such as independent lmmaker _]on

Red, videotaping on digital format is denitely the “in” thing.

A graduate of the Philippine High School for the Arts and UP Colle e of Fine Arts, jon has come a long way since his rst attempt into filmmaking. Pgrom an ex erimental video entitled “ES” that won for him the Special jury Prize at the Nfbndiale dela Video in Brussels, Belgium in I991 to winning the Gawad Urian for his short lms “Tiempo” and “Trip” in 1993 and I994, he maximized his talents further by making a full-length digital video called “Still Lives” and a rst commercial lm “Utang ni Tatang”. While he also directs documentaries and a television program “Hirayamanawari”, jon also shares his thoughts on this latest genre and newest baby, an experimental digital lm billed as “Astig” which stars Robin Padilla.

Q: What is “Astig” all about? Given the expenses involved in making a digital video production, how was the project nanced?

How costly is the lm? What were the major problems/challenges you faced in this production?

A: “Astig” tells the story from the point of view and through the eyes of Bien, an assassin who suffers from astigmatism.

To achieve this effect, Robin Padilla, who plays Bien, also worked as camera operator. Bien is assigned to terminate former gangmates and in the process questions himself on the kind of life he is living.

The project was produced with personal funds and support of some friends. Equipment was borrowed and everybody (cast and crew) worked for no professional fees because, I would like to assume, of their belief in the project. We spent P2()0,000 for food, props, gas money.

The challenges usually encountered in small productions like “Astig” always has something to do with money.

But that’sjust ne because in indie lms, one will have to solve problems with creative ideas. Ifyou have a big budget, you will solve things with money. And I am very much satised with the rst option.

Q: What are the current influences of style of filmmaking, particularly in “Astig”?

A: Inuences lms.

were you able to tap big name stars like Robin, Albert, etc. for your film? Are there any p ans to compete or to have Astig featured in international film festivals?

g: How

A: I have encountered most of the name stars in either past productions or meetings of doomed projects. When I wrote “Asti ”, I presented it to them but didn’t really convince them since there was no money involved. I thought that ifthey woufd say “ es” then maybe, there was something in it for them. And ifit were a “no”, then the material was not worth their time. lyguess their positive reply indicated their “hunger” to experiment more challenging or even absurd roles.

This early, there are already invitations and signs of interest from international festival organizers. It would be difficult, though, to translate it to English, with all the Pinoy slang words and expressions. But we will maximize all possible venues to exhibit “Astig”.

Q: Tell us a few things about the process of digital video roduction. Other lm your stint as a PHSA scholar influence you to take filmmaking?

A: When one hears about digital video, the first thing that comes to mind is “hi-tech” or state of the art. And l guess, that is appro riate. But. more than this, digital video for me and a lot of other practitioners of the medium — is accessibility. gecausecompared to film, it is very affordable. Now, the filmmaker can afford (or afford to borrow) his own tools. And this is the very essence of independent filmmaking having what it takes (both medium and guts) to fight for one’s chosen cinema and ultimately gain freedom from the dictates of a very commercialized industry.

Q: Do you plan to break into mainstream lming

digital moviemaker?

l feel that breakin into the mainstream is something that I do not have to plan. My objective is to continue doing these “exercises” andgbe a good lm student, produce the kind of cinema that I am capable of, make the best work possible and reach the most number of viewers without compromising the material. What happens after this is incidental. But l do continue to hope that more opportunities will arise for alternative lmmakers.

A:

Q: Do you think there’s a future for digital video making in the country? What pieces of advice can you give to aspiring digital video makers?

A: The future of digital video making is very promising. There is no other way to go, especially for experimental and documentary filmmakers. The tools are here. Cable channels and theater venues are opening up. The important thing is to sustain the activity and keep on working. Younger and as iring filmmakers should take advantage of the new medium and produce works that represent their vision. Because if tiiey won’t, no one else will do it for them. if they’re not willing to risk now, it will be harder when they get older. l know it sounds too cliché and corny for some because these things are often said and heard. l just hope they’re done as often too.

She started as a photographer before doing cinematography work for commercials, music videos, documentaries, short features and feature length productions. Her award winning ads include PLDT's victorious Suportahan Taka and San Miguel Beer's Binibini.

Her lms include Sana Pag-ibig Na, Tanging Yaman, American Adobo and the 2003 Manila Film Festival Best Picture winner, Crying Ladies.

MANRIQUE "RICKY" ORELLANA, ]R. has worked as Director, Animator, Film Editor and Art Director on short and feature lms and documentaries. He began to make lms while studying Architecture at the University of Santo Tomas, and made experimental lms at a workshop by German lmmaker Christoph lanetzko. His representative work is Sa Maynila which won the Best Documentary award at the 3rd Gawad CCP para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video in I989 and Best Student Film Documentary at the 8th FAP Student Motion Picture Awards in 1990. He is the founder of Animagination, a network of local independent animators. He is the treasurer of two organizations, the Animation Council of the Philippines (ACPI) and the Society of Film Archivists (SOFIA). He is currently the Archives Head at the Mowelfund Film Institute.

BARBARA V. PARDO holds a Communication Arts Degree Major in Radio, TV and Film from De La Salle University and a Masters of the Arts Degree from New York University major in Media Ecology/New Media. She is currently the Marketing Manager for DREAM Satellite TV.

DOCUMENTARY RUPERTO S. NICDAO, ]R. is the President of the Manila Broadcasting Company and Vice President for Radio of the Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster sa Pilipinas. He is also a member of the CCP Board of Trustees.

She worked with Probe Productions where she was in charge of The Probe Team, 5 and Up and Gameplan. She hosted and produced I-Witness, At Your Service and Brigada Siete on GMA Network Inc.

SHORT FEATURE PATRICK D. FLORES is a Professor (Art History, Theory, Criticism, Philippine Art), Department of Art Studies, University of the Philippines, Diliman; and an Afliate Professor, Open University and Center for International Studies, University of the Philippines. He is a member of the NCCA Executive Committee, Committee on Visual Arts; and Film Desk of the Young Critics Circle.

LEO MARTINEZ is the Director General of the Film Academy of the Philippines. He is a Commissioner on Culture of UNESCO, a member of the Cinema Evaluation Board and Chairman of the Performer’s Rights Society of the Philippines.

“]ON" RED, ]R. studied visual arts at the High School for the Arts in Mt. Makiling and UP Philippine Diliman. He worked as painter and graphic designer, later turned to lmmaking. He directed short lms (Trip and Ang Pabrika), TV ads (McDo ni Brod Pete), TV shows (Hirayamanawari, Pahina, Bayani and Sineskwela), music videos (Side A, Vanna Vanna 81: his personal favorite Renz Verano) and documentaries (Channel 2's Bihag and CCP's Kuwadro on Maceda). He made full-length experimentations with Still Lives, Utang ni Tatang and Astig. He is currently working on the epic Coup B'eta and Anak ng Tokwa paintings series.
