What Is Endoscopic Variceal Ligation (EVL) and What Is It Used To Treat?

Endoscopic Variceal Banding or Endoscopic Variceal Ligation (EVL) is a procedure related to gastroenterology, in which a doctor (gastroenterologist) will use an endoscope to place an elastic ring around an enlarged vein. Banding the vein in this manner cuts off the blood flow through the vein, and stops variceal bleeding, which is what this procedure is used to treat. Stopping immediate (acute) variceal bleeding is the most common motive of EVL. In people who have cirrhosis, high pressure in veins that carry blood from the intestines to the liver (portal hypertension)
