Students participating in Cannon Hill SS’s new Dance program were encouraged by a recent visit from fellow GLC school, Balmoral SHS. The Balmoral SHS Yr 10 Dance Class with three senior male dancers, supported by their Dance teachers, facilitated a workshop showing their younger peers how to do a proper dance warm-up and then inspired the audience with some hip hop and free styling dance moves.

OPEN SATURDAY MORNINGS

Primary school volunteers also had the chance to perform for their schoolmates and everyone was taught a brief dance routine. With the National Curriculum (ACARA) in the Arts due to be introduced in schools in 2015 it is very timely that our local GLC primary schools tap into the expertise of Balmoral SHS specialist arts teachers and their students, to build their capacity right across the five key arts learning areas - Visual Art, Music, Media, Drama and Dance. Feedback from Cannon Hill SS teachers after the Balmoral SHS Dance Workshop was very positive, with special mention of how the Balmoral SHS male dance students were such an inspiration for getting the primary boys involved in the dance classes.

The Gateway Learning Community is Balmoral State High School, Bulimba State School, Cannon Hill State School, Morningside State School, Murarrie State School, Norman Park State School and Seven Hills State School.

Sustainable GLC Networking The seven GLC schools value networking to learn about new programs and resources, and to share experiences and expertise. One of our GLC networks - the Sustainable GLC Network - in May has the pleasure of hosting two guests with information about their respective organisations’ opportunities for schools.

Keep Qld Beautiful’s (KQB) Green & Healthy Schools Awards have undergone a revamp. No longer awards of recognition for a few exemplary schools, the new Cleaner Greener Schools program invites all Queensland schools to seek accreditation to receive a ‘Star’ rating from 1 to 5- 1 Star being a school starting on its journey towards sustainability and 5 stars for a school that is able to demonstrate significant leadership around environmental sustainability. Schools then can use their rating in any given year to promote their programs and aim for improvement. Tarra Martel, Education Officer from KQB, explained that the idea is not to promote competition but to build on success, encouraging schools to aim high and work with each other to reach their sustainability goals. Schools wishing to put in a submission this year have until 13 September to do so. Learn more about Cleaner Greener Schools at www.keepqueenslandbeautiful.org.au The Global Learning Centre (the other GLC!) is a Qld based not-for-profit community organisation dedicated to supporting education for justice, peace and sustainability. The Global Learning Centre, offers workshops, resources, professional support and guidance for educators including an 'Advocates Program' which provides supported summer school study opportunities linked to higher level qualifications.

Each year in May schools, kindys, childcare centres, playgroups and local communities all around Qld celebrate Under Eights Week, an event proudly initiated by the Early Childhood Australia Queensland Branch that has been running now for 50 years.

The following day Morningside State School staged its own annual Under 8’s activity morning filling the courtyards and hall with eager children trying out cheerleading, acrobatics, getting their faces painted and all sorts of other arts, music and physical experiences.

This year’s theme 'Celebrating community - sharing music, movement and culture. Think locally!' was supported in our local GLC schools with events that brought schools together and invited the community in to participate and share.

Thanks to everyone involved in both events for your generosity of spirit and hard work in making these days a memorable experience of early childhood for GLC students.

Under 8’s Big Day Out is one such event which is now in its 12th year. Seven Hills State School hosts the event, opening its grounds and linking with other GLC schools Norman Park SS, Bulimba SS, Murarrie SS and Balmoral SHS, Seven Hills Kindergarten, local community groups and local businesses to stage a day of fun, hands on, educational activities for some 700 kindergarten to Yr 2 students.

Principal of Bulimba, Michael Zeuschner, was a recent participant in the Advocates Program. He and Karen Menzies, a member of the Global Learning Centre spoke at the meeting showing the school reps an array of resources available to support their teaching.

Also, courtesy of LJ Hooker Cannon Hill and many local businesses, the students received free fruit, irresistible fairy bread and drinks, as well as a visit from Mr. Hooker Bear. We thank them all for their contributions and support to make this day extra special for the children!

Norman Park SS students talk about what they saw and did at Under 8’s Big Day Out“When we arrived I was excited when I went out of the bus. I saw lots of people. I put my bag down and calmed myself so I wasn’t so excited.” Dip, Yr 2 Norman Park SS “First we saw the fire truck. The fire man gave out Blazer stickers. Then we went to the maze. I thought it was dark and spooky in there. Next we went to the light room. I saw the children playing with the colourful shapes and counters. Then we went to the oval. We played chess. Then we played bowling. Then we made paper puppet dragons. Then we went to play with clay…..” Ava, Yr 2 Norman Park SS

But our hope is, for those who have browsed through one or more of the 37 issues of this newsletter that began back in 2004, that some of the joy of learning that is expressed through the photos and articles, rubs off. You are encouraged to share in the successes of our wonderful GLC schools and their students, to support them in their ongoing work to build learning communities both within each school and across the GLC.

Parents and carers supervised small groups of children who freely wandered from activity to activity as interest lead them, carrying bags which were progressively filled with things the children had made and giveaways. From the local police to ‘Pet City’ crab races there was something for everyone!

It is actually quite a difficult task to select the photos to illustrate the many across school and community events and projects that are celebrated on the pages of this newsletter. Why so hard? Because there are always just so many to choose from; so many smiling, engaged faces in all sorts of settings, together doing all sorts of educational activities.
