IT HAS BEEN AN UNPREDICTABLE
FEW MONTHS FOR TIERNAN BROOKS
The 22-year-old arrived on Tyneside back in the summer of 2024 with the task of solidifying himself as Gateshead’s number one in sight – one which he had no trouble in convincing supporters he was capable of from day one of the campaign.
An unforeseen ankle issue threw his progress into uncertain territory back in October however, with that injury keeping him out of action until the end of February, when he returned to the side away to Eastleigh.
Hailed by manager Carl Magnay as ‘the best goalkeeper in the league’ shortly before his return, Brooks has stepped back between the sticks like he was never away, and his comeback could hardly come at a more
important time of the season.
“We thought it was going to be a long-term issue, but we got around it a lot quicker than we thought we would – so all praise to Frazer [Bell]!” he said.
“It was probably one of the hardest things I’ve had to overcome given that I was out for so long, but it also gave me a focus to keep on top of my gym work and improve in areas that I maybe couldn’t during the season.
“We had a few lads out, so it wasn’t one of those where I was in the gym by myself and driving myself insane!
“There were other boys around who were driving each other on, and getting each other through that tough period together.”
WE GOT AROUND IT A LOT QUICKER THAN WE THOUGHT WE WOULD - SO ALL PRAISE TO FRAZER BELL!
There has been plenty of change in playing personnel in the four months of Brooks’ absence from the match day squad, with Gateshead practically losing half of their squad to injuries and departures across that period.
To put things into perspective,
I ALWAYS FEEL THAT I'M QUITE INTEGRATED WITH THE GROUP, SO IT WAS SMOOTH
six of the 10 players starting alongside him in the last game before his injury – a 1-0 win over Solihull Moors in October – were absent from the squad entirely upon his return at Eastleigh in February.
Such has been the turnover of players on Tyneside that four of his team-mates at the Silverlake Stadium were players whom he
had never lined up alongside previously, though his presence around the changing room throughout his injury meant that he perhaps didn’t feel the weight of change as much as some may expect – even if his housemates have changed on almost a biweekly basis.
“We miss Owen Oseni and Kain Adom - they were the original ones in our house,” he said.
“We had Louis Flower in, who is another good lad, before he picked up his injury, and now we’ve got JB [Jean Belehouan] and little Ty [Tyrelle Newton] in, and Jovan comes around as well.
“I always feel that I’m quite integrated with the group.
“It was a smooth transition in getting back playing with the lads, and also getting to grips with the new boys.
“It has been hard that we haven’t had a consistent back line throughout the season, but those are the cards that we’ve been dealt and we need to get on with it the best we can.
“We’ve all played with each other enough now individually - even if it’s not as a mixture - to the point where we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
“Now it’s just about getting to grips together on a match day, and dealing with the situation we’re in at the minute.
“For me personally, I was trying to pick up from where I
Brooks and former housemate, Kain Adom.
so it’s about sticking with it and keeping the whole team together.”
I KNOW FOR A FACT IF ALL OF THE LADS GIVE 100% THEN THE TABLE WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF - AS IT DID AT THE START OF THE SEASON
left off.
“I was out for so long that it made me even more hungry to get back involved and get the team back to where we were.
“It’s going to take a little bit more time with the amount of people we’ve got out injured,
Such are the high standards set by Brooks and co, that the ‘where we were’ he mentions is actually where Gateshead find themselves in the present day.
The Heed have dropped no lower than fifth in the National League since the end of September, and have regularly swapped places with Oldham Athletic in fourth place in their efforts to solidify a place in the play-off positions for the second season running.
A winless run of four games feels seismic given the success that The Heed have become used to over the past four seasons, but Brooks feels that
there is still more than enough within the walls at Gateshead International Stadium to turn recent form around.
“I know for a fact that if all of the lads here give 100% then the table will take care of itself - as it did at the start of the season,” he said.
“As long as we give 100%even if you lose - you can hold your hands up and say you gave it your all.
“I’ve enjoyed every minute of being back, because I’d missed what I’ve always been doing.
“I think I’ve played well so far, obviously results haven’t gone our way, but that’s just the period we find ourselves in at the minute – we’re obviously very light on players.
Emilio Kirtley
“For me though, how I’ve always been brought up and having been around senior lads a lot, there’s no point looking at what’s ahead because that’s when you get overwhelmed."
What does lie immediately ahead - within Brooks and co's intentional tunnel vision - is today's home tie against a Maidenhead United side playing for league status of their own.
The Magpies sit precariously in the bottom four ahead of kick off, which although on the surface is the opposite end of the table to Gateshead, means that the all-important extra motivation is more than present to squeeze each last percent out of themselves in the pursuit of points.
Casting thoughts towards where today's opponents - or Gateshead themselves - are in the division's standings ahead of the 37th game of the season however, is not in Brooks' plans.
The Heed's number one may not be a regular viewer of the league table, as are few within the professional game, but he is actuely aware that if Gateshead handle their own business, then there is little to be concerned about.
“The results haven’t gone our way recently, but that’s done now, and we look forward to the next one," Brooks said.
“I’ve never been one to check the table, especially when I’m at a team who is up at the top end of the league.
“Worry can set in and you start to get nervous predicting what might or might not happen, so you have to take it game by game.
“If we treat it like that and handle our own stuff on the day without focusing on the future, then I’m sure results will come our way." n

MAIDENHEAD UNITED
Despite spenidng all of their eight seasons so far in the National League as favourites for relegation, with a budget dwarfed by many in the division, Maidenhead still stand proudly as a fifth tier side in 2025.
As has been the case in most of their seasons in the National League though, that status is under threat with 10 games to go.
Alan Devonshire's side currently sit 22nd and inside the relegation zone by two points, with no wins in their last five games plunging them back into danger after an away win at playoff hopefuly Oldham Athletic had temporarily dragged them out of trouble.
The relegation battle in this season's division is far from clear cut however, with those up to
16th place still in with a realistic chance of falling into the drop zone should the teams currently occupying it find late season form.
Some solace for Maidenhead supporters comes in the fact that all of their final four games of the season are against their direct rivals in that relegaton battle, with Devonshire's side to face
Woking, Wealdstone, Ebbsfleet United and Boston United in the final few weeks of the campaign.
Their most immediate challenge comes on Tyneside this afternoon though, and Gateshead are a side whom Maidenhead have largely struggled against in recent years.
Six of the last nine meetings between the two sides have seen Gateshead score three or more goals, with the most notable of those coming in the form of a 7-1 win at Gateshead International Stadium in March 2018.
This season's reverse fixture brought a further five goals The Heed's way, though Regan Booty will be the sole man out of those four goalscorers who will be available for selection this afternoon. n
Maidenhead are battling to stay as a National League side once again come the summer.

November 23, 2024
Gateshead struck five against ten-man Maidenhead to earn their first Vanarama National League win in almost a month in the last meeting between the two sides.
November saw The Heed arrive at Maidenhead with both sides occupying almost the same positions they do heading into today's game, with Gateshead in fifth place while Maidenhead sat 22nd in the league table.
A five-goal win at York Road would lift Carl Magnay's side back up to fourth position come full time however, with Kevin Lokko's 17th minute red card
giving Gateshead an early advantage.
Jacob Butterfield scored the resulting free-kick to put his side in control, before an Alan Massey own goal made it two-nil at the break.
A second half blitz saw The Heed add gloss to the scoreline with three goals inside fourteen minutes as they made their man
advantage count.
Regan Booty weaved past his man from 20 yards and curled into the far corner to make it three, before Callum Whelan added his name to the scoresheet for Gateshead's fourth, followed up by Butterfield's second - and his side's fifth - with 66 minutes on the clock. n
Gateshead's fine start to the 2023/24 season continued with a 3-0 home win over today's opponents the last time Maidenhead United made the journey to Tyneside
September saw Mike Williamson's side emerging as one of the division's teams to beat in the opening months of the campaign, with only runaway league leaders Chesterfield scoring more goals than The Heed inside the opening 10 games.
Gateshead would have to be patient to break down a resilient Maidenhead outfit however,
who held out for 67 minutes before their defences were finally breached at Gateshead International Stadium.
Regan Booty and Stephen Wearne combined on the left flank before the latter's cross was deflected into Marcus Dinanga's path, who headed in off the crossbar to put Gateshead in front with just over
20 minutes remaining.
Dinanga grabbed his second with 10 minutes to go to make sure of the result, but was denied a hat-trick by visiting goalkeeper Craig Ross in injury time, though Ed Francis was keen to follow up to tap home for his first goal in black and white, securing a three-nil win on Tyneside. n
One of the National League's longest serving managers, Devonshire passed his 800th game as manager of Maidenhead in August 2024.
The 68-year-old is in his second spell in charge of the Magpies, having first taken charge from 1996 to 2003 before returning to the club in 2015.
As a player, Devonshire made 358 appearances for West Ham United from 1976 to 1990, before turning his hand to management for the first time in 1995 with Osterley.
Craig ROSS DOB: 29/01/1990
Ross has made over 250 National League appearances across spells with Maidenhead United, Woking, Macclesfield and Cambridge United.
The 35-year-old appeared in all 46 of Maidenhead's league fixtures last season, and has played in all 36 of this season's National League games so far.
Ross is in his second season with Maidenhead, having spent the previous five campaigns with Woking across the fifth and sixth tiers.
Will DE HAVILLAND DOB: 08/11/1994
De Havilland has spent the past four seasons as a key member of Maidenhead United's defence.
The central defender has made 130 of his 229 National League appearances for the Magpies, having previously appeared for Dover Athletic, Maidstone United and Aldershot Town.
De Havilland has played 29 times for Alan Devonshire's side this season, and was part of the team in this season's reverse fixture.

The forward has struck nine times in the league for The Magpies this season, bettering his previous best of six goals for Newport County during the 2016/17 campaign.
Pettit extended his stay at the club in the summer season, missing no league
McCoulsky passed a century of appearances for Maidenhead this season, having originally joined in January 2022, and has scored 21 goals for the club in total.

Abrahams is The Mapgies main spark in attack with 18 goal involvements to his name so far this term.
The forward has struck 10 times in the National League as well as recording eight assists in 33 games, making this season his first to hit double figures across his career.
Abrahams made just shy of 150 appearances in League Two, with over half of those coming at Newport County, and has previously plied his trade for Grimsby Town and Eastleigh at National League level.

WJEFF BOWRON RUNS THE RULE
OVER AN IMPORTANT WEEK ON HOME TURF AS WE APPROACH THE FINAL STRAIGHT
e welcome Maidenhead to the International Stadium today in what is a pivotal week for Gateshead in the race for promotion.
The Tynesiders have done the hard yards in recent weeks with four games out of five on the road, including two trips to Hampshire.
Factor in a chronic injury list that reached double figures and it's perhaps understandable that results have tapered off.
Two points from the last 12, however, is not play-off form and we need to make home advantage count this week.
Maidenhead make the long journey from Berkshire sitting in the relegation zone and just
as desperate for points as the Heed.
We won magnificently at the Magpies historic York Road ground in November, but of the goalscorers in a 5-0 win only Regan Booty will play today.
The amount of quality players unavailable has been frightening, though, hopefully, we'll be in a better place injury wise in April for the final push.
That said, it is important those involved this week step up to the plate and, in some cases, up their game, if we're to strengthen our place in the top seven.
Manager Carl Magnay has gone on record stating that we need to win all three of this week's home games - and that won't be easy.
A third attempt to stage the
MANAGER CARL MAGNAY HAS GONE ON RECORD STATING THAT WE NEED TO WIN ALL THREE OF THIS WEEK'S GAMES
Braintree game will be made on Tuesday, the part-time Iron one of the form sides in the division.
A run of just one defeat from their last six games has seen the Essex club distance themselves somewhat from the bottom four. There is still work to be done to preserve their top flight status, and making the long journey to Tyneside in midweek as a parttime outfit is something the Heed can exploit.
Completing the trio of games at the GIS are another promoted side, Tamworth, who famously ran Tottenham close in the FA Cup this season.
Also semi-professional, the uncompromising mid-table Lambs have proved hard to play against on their return the fifth tier.
So, there we have it.
Three games in eight days on home soil that present an opportunity that simply must be taken.
Magnay's men have benefited from a welcome, and much needed, week without a Tuesday fixture.
There are ten league games remaining and - crucially - six of them are on Tyneside.
All to play for in what is a big week on the home front. n

Slane was sufficient to secured the points for South Shields at the expense of visitors Netherfield (now Kendal Town) whilst struggling Ashington sank deeper into the mire following a 2-0 home reverse to Morecambe.
Athletic, were the visitors to Redheugh Park on 15th March 1969, fifty-six years ago today.
Gateshead were languishing in the lower half of the Northern Premier League table whilst the Latics occupied second spot albeit well behind runaway leaders Macclesfield Town. Nevertheless a rapidly improving Gateshead side staged a fine performance in shocking conditions to gain an unexpected victory over their high flying opponents
The first half was evenly contested but after the break the Tynesiders completely dominated the proceedings.
Gerry Coyne, who was attracting the attention of several Football League clubs, was the hosts most dangerous front man, testing the visiting keeper David Gaskell with a number of powerful shots before grabbing the only goal of the game midway through the half. Working his way inside the box he unleashed a shot which Gaskell could only palm over his head and although he made a desperate effort to redeem the situation he could only make contact with the ball after it had crossed the line by inches.
The effort was hotly disputed by the visitors but the referee pointed to the middle after consulting a linesman.
Elsewhere in the competition a ninth minute effort by Brian
The North East was well represented in the semi finals of the F.A. Amateur Cup with mixed fortunes. Whitley Bay exited the competition by a 4-2 margin against Sutton Town but North Shields drew 1-1 with Skelmersdale United despite being reduced to ten men after Alan Driver received his marching orders. Shields won the replay and went on to lift the coveted trophy.
The biggest shock of the day was undoubtedly Third Division Swindon Town’s 3-1 extra time triumph over Arsenal in the final tie of the Football League Cup at Wembley.
In the First Division Newcastle United`s encounter with Everton at Goodison Park was postponed but Sunderland were on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline against Liverpool at Roker Park. Ian St. John and Alun Evans were the visitors marksmen.
Carlisle United’s Second Division encounter with Middlesbrough at Brunton Park ended 3-0 in favour of the Cumbrians. n
