RADCLIFFE

HAS MADE HIMSELF AN INDISPENSABLE PART OF GATESHEAD'S

DEFENCE IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS

The centre-back had to bide his time after arriving on loan from Derby County in September, but when his chance came, he made sure he didn’t look back.

Fourteen appearances, five clean sheets and two goals later, and Radcliffe has become a regular name on the Gateshead team sheet under both Rob Elliot and Carl Magnay.

“I’m really enjoying it - it’s been a new experience for me,” he said.

“It’s been my first time being on a full-time loan anywhere, so it’s been a good experience to come up here and get that done, and I’m really enjoying the football.

“I certainly play my best when

I’m enjoying myself and I get that out of this team - it’s a really enjoyable team to play in.

“The style of play is a massive factor, and all of the lads get on really well which helps, but there’s just so many positives to go through.

“I like to get forward - I’ve never been an out and out centre half so the style suits me.

“It’s perfect for me technically, and physically I’m quite a good athlete so I can get up and down the pitch as well.

“The centre halves are so important for how we play, and you feel like you’re a vital cog in what is a very good team, so it’s a delight to play in.”

Integrating into Gateshead’s clearly defined style is something that comes naturally to few, and

I CERTAINLY PLAY MY BEST WHEN I'M ENJOYING MYSELF - IT'S A REALLY ENJOYABLE TEAM TO PLAY IN

Radcliffe has been no different in tackling the learning curve that comes with it, by his own admission.

The defender was introduced as a second half substitute in his first two games against Barnet and Dagenham & Rebdridge, before making his full debut

THE GAFFER AND BRIDS ARE APPROACHABLE & SO EASY TO TALK TO AND FOR ME IT'S A PRIVILEGE TO HAVE THEM THERE

against Forest Green Rovers at Gateshead International Stadum, and Radcliffe has started every one of the nine National League games since then.

“It was difficult at the start,” he explained.

“It was so different to how

“We had the manager situation in amongst that as well which didn’t help with understanding things, but now with Brids and the gaffer it’s been good to get those concepts nailed down again.

“I feel like I’ve learned so much, especially with Brids, we’ve got quite a good working relationship.

“I’m learning a lot from him in terms of my positioning and on the mental side of the game as well.

“It’s always different when a manager changes because everyone ups their game a little bit, and they want to prove a

point to the new gaffer.

“It was a bit different with some of the boys having played with or under the gaffer before, but it’s been so professional in that now he’s the manager everyone understands that the respect is so important.

“There’s a really good relationship with the gaffer and Brids in that they’re approachable, and I’m learning so much from them being good people.

“They’re so easy to talk to and for me it’s a privilege to have them there - they’ve both had such good careers in the game that I can learn from both of them.

“You never expect to come in straight away and start, the team

was doing really well so I didn’t really expect to start as much as I did.

“I’ll always back myself, but I also needed to prove to myself that I could do it.

“I was fortunate enough to get that chance, and I think my

“I’m enjoying myself again, which comes back to the saying of that’s when I play my best.

“You have to get that little bit of luck in football, but I feel like once I got that, I took my chance.”

Take his chance he certainly did, with Radcliffe’s performances across his first month on Tyneside seeing supporters name him as their Player of the Month for September.

The 21-year-old’s breakthrough into the first team was shortly followed with his first two goals for the club, netting both in the space of five days

in wins over Boston United and Southend United.

Those two strikes were memorable moments for Radcliffe – even if his ill-fated knee slide after the former was the subject of some light-hearted jokes from family members.

“I got that rinsed by my family for the first one that I wasn’t going to risk doing it again!” he laughed.

“I could do with getting a couple more - playing centrehalf you’re never prided on your goals, but it turns out they’ve been a couple of really important ones.

“Everyone loves scoring, and seeing the fans happy and making their day is why you play football.

Ryan McDermott

“There have been a few really good clean sheets amongst that where we’ve had to get stuck in and put some proper defending in, so there’s been a good mix of both.

“It’s a massive thank you as well to the supporters who thought I’d done that well to be named Player of the Month.

“It’s usually one for attackers so to get that as a defender is a massive privilege – I wasn’t expecting it at all.

“If the fans think I’m doing well and the wins are following on the pitch, then you can’t really moan at that!”

Radcliffe and his team-mates’ focus today though is on the task at hand at Gateshead International Stadium, with Aldershot Town making the journey to Tyneside in our first National League home fixture in three weeks.

Gateshead’s form has been almost faultless on home soil so far, with seven wins from eight games seeing only Forest Green Rovers take any points away from NE10.

“We’re just relentless when we’re at home,” said Radcliffe.

“The way we play, we feel some teams get intimidated by it- it’s a tough place to come and we thrive on that.

“There seems to be a belief and never say die attitude when we’re at home, which we saw with the late goal against Solihull, so hopefully we can continue that going forward.

“Straight after Fylde we were itching for today to come around to rectify that result - it wasn’t an ideal performance either.

“No game is ever easy, and they come thick and fast, so we’ve got to turn up and put in the best performance we can." n

ALDERSHOT TOWN FC

After narrowly missing out on a play-off place last season, Aldershot make the journey to Tyneside this afternoon entrenched in a battle at the opposite end of the National League table.

The Shots find themselves in 17th place and just two points above the bottom four ahead of kick off today, with only the division's three lowest ranked sides winning fewer games than Tommy Widdrington's side.

Their sole win in the National League since the end of August came in the form of a 2-1 win over Eastleigh just under one month ago, and they currently find themselves on the back of a four-game losing streak in all competitions.

Two red cards in the final 10 minutes against Wealdstone

last weekend capped off a rough return to league action for Aldershot, who will be without defenders Dan Ellison and Aaron Jones for today's game at Gateshead International Stadium.

The Shots' frontline - their biggest strength with 74 goals scored during the 2023/24 season (only four sides netted more) - has a starkly different

look to it this time around.

Four of their five top scorers from last season's National League campaign now ply their trade elsewhere, with Jack Barham the only remaining marksman after Lorent Tolaj, Josh Stokes, Cian Harries & Kwame Thomas all departed for pastures new.

Thirty-four of those league goals came from Tolaj and Stokes alone, with the goalscoring burden now shouldered by current men James Henry, Josh Barrett and Hady Ghandour amongst others. Aldershot will be hoping their fortunes change this afternoon though, with a win potentially enough to lift them to 15th should other results go their way, taking them to within touching distance of a tightly-packed National League mid-table. n

October 26, 2024

Perseverance paid off in Gateshead's last National League game on Tyneside, as Owen Oseni's injury-time strike secured all three points against Solihull Moors in Carl Magnay's first home game as manager.

Fresh off the back of a 1-0 midweek win in Sutton, The Heed returned to Gateshead International Stadium in the first meeting with Solihull since the 2024 FA Trophy final, and both sides were just as evenly matched in the opening 45.

Luke Hannant and Conor Wilkinson drew saves from either goalkeeper in the opening two

minutes of the game - though the remainder of the first half proved light on goalscoring chances.

Gateshed ramped up the pressure after the break however, and they should have gone ahead on 64 minutes when Ben Worman pulled back across goal for Tyrelle Newton, who fired over the crossbar from 10 yards out.

Just when it seemed that The Heed's pressure would count for nothing though, Oseni met Regan Booty's cross at the back post to head past Laurie Walker and seal a second consecutive win for Magnay's side.

Gateshead ended the weekend fourth in the National League - a position they still hold ahead of today's game. n

The fourth of five games inside the final nine days of the National League season saw Louis Storey play the second half in goal in the last meeting between Gateshead and Aldershot.

A raft of postponementsincluding in the original fixture against The Shots - saw The Heed take on a mammoth close-season schedule in their quest to finish in the play-off places, with fixtures against AFC Fylde, Maidenhead United, Chesterfield, Aldershot and Bromley rounding off the 2024/25 campaign.

Gateshed had in fact secured

a top-seven finish with victory over Chesterfield two days prior to hosting Aldershot, though the visitors still had an outside chance of making the play-off places if results went their way.

The night was perhaps expectedly light on entertainment given Gateshead's match fatigue until goalkeeper Nathan Harness was sent off

two minutes into the second half, leaving Storey to play the final 45 in goal with no goalkeeper on the bench.

Kwame Thomas headed home the game's only goal midway through the half, though it mattered little to Aldershot's play-off prospects with a Halifax win on the final day seeing them take seventh spot. n

KEY MEN…

THE GAFFER GOALKEEPER DEFENDER

Tommy WIDDRINGTON DOB: 01/10/1971

The Newcastle-born manager returns to the North East hoping his side's fortunes turn arouid this afternoon.

Aldershot find themselves struggling towards the bottom end of the National League as things stand in Widdrington's second full season as gaffer, having arrived in April 2023.

The 53-year-old's first full campaign saw The Shots finish in eighth place last season, missing out on a play-off place by two points following a final day draw against Dagenham & Redbridge.

Marcus DEWHURST

DOB: 20/03/2001

Dewhurst has emerged as Aldershot's first choice between the sticks this season after joining from Wealdstone in the summer.

The shot-stopper appeared 27 times in the National League for The Stones during the 2023/24 season, having played 24 times for Scunthorpe United the season prior.

Dewhurst has made 16 National League appearances for Aldershot so far this season, keeping four clean sheets to take his total to eight across 70 fifth tier games.

Lachlan BYRD DOB: 30/05/2002

The Australian centreback is well underway in his second season in English football after making the move to Aldershot this summer.

Byrd joined Welling United ahead of the 2023/24 season, going on to play 42 times in the National League South, also appearing alongside current Gateshead forward Kain Adom.

The 22-year-old has been a regular fixture in Aldershot's backline this season, playing 15 games so far for Tommy Widdrington's side.

The forward has netted three times in 17 appearances so far this season, scoring twice on the opening day against Forest Green Rovers before bagging his last goal against Maidenhead at the end of August.

Barrett is one of Aldershot's bright sparks in attack, with the attacking midfielder capable of creating matchwinning moments.

The 26-year-old has scored four times for Aldershot this season, and is one of several players to have followed manager Widdrington from King's Lynn Town to The Shots.

Liam Bridcutt & Callum Whelan share a pre-match laugh before our last home fixture against Leeds Utd U21.

LAFC FYLDE'S MILL FARM STADIUM HAS BEEN A GRAVEYARD FOR THE HEED BUT REMAINS A PROTOTYPE FOR AMBITIOUS CLUBS

ast Saturday's trip to AFC Fylde as usual didn't go to plan, but you couldn't help but be impressed with the facilities at Mill Farm.

AFC Fylde may not be the most popular of clubs but their stadium is, arguably, the best of the relatively new stadiums in the National League.

York City's LNER Stadium, situated in a new retail and leisure complex, is all-seater and has an assortment of coloured seats giving it a lego-type feel.

Boston United's new Jakeman's Stadium has terracing behind the goal and down one side opposite the main stand.

Like Barnet's ground The Hive it is a three-sided ground with nothing behind one of the goals.

Both clubs will hope to

develop their vacant end, though the Bees are looking to return to Barnet at some stage - easier said than done.

Three of Fylde's 6,000-capacity Mill Farm are terracing with the seated main stand incorporating a restaurant, sports bar, and corporate facilities.

There is an opulence about the stadium entrance and facilities, which include a spiral staircase and an 18-bed, five-star hotel on site.

It is all mightily impressive and for many Heed fans is a reminder of what might have been for our own club.

Fifteen years ago in 2009, Gateshead FC launched detailed plans for a stadium of their own having being based at the

DESPITE COMMITTING THOUSANDS OF POUNDS TO THE PROJECT & ADVANCED PLANS, IT SADLY NEVER GOT OFF THE GROUND

International Stadium since 1972.

The new ground originally had a 9,000 capacity, was covered on all sides with a substantial three-storey main stand.

The former North Durham cricket & rugby ground near the Civic Centre in the heart of town was to house the ambitious new venture.

Despite committing thousands of pounds to the project and plans at an advanced stage it sadly never got off the ground.

Gateshead remained at the council-owned International Stadium, and infamously failed to meet Football League ground regulations to take part in last season's play-offs.

The EFL have since reduced ground tenure for new clubs from ten to five years with a new private operator set to take over the running of the stadium.

This should mean that if the Heed make the play-offs again this season we will actually be allowed to take part this time.

We enter today's game against bottom-half outfit Aldershot Town in fourth place, just one point out of the top three, with seven wins out of eight at home.

High standards that we need to maintain against The Shots. n

THE LATEST UPDATES FROM GATESHEAD SOUL

Here at Gateshead Soul we have the responsibility to represent our members, all those individual shareholders, who help safeguard the future of professional football in Gateshead.

Those members are encouraged to raise any issues or make any suggestions which we can then forward to the FC. because of that we always try to make decisions which reflect the needs and best interests of our supporters.

During the close season we were in conversation with Nexus about the possibility of having

club branding at the local Metro station, but unfortunately it didn't come to fruition. We've also looked to repair the foosball table in the MTS that our junior members enjoy playing with, and are trying to find solutions to ease the queues on the concourse at half time of home games.

Some of these issues have been left with the FC and we are always willing to work to improve your match day experience.

We continue to look for a new Chairperson to lead our board in the coming months. If you feel you would like to join us, please contact us at gfcsoul@gmail. com n

WAS FA CUP FIRST ROUND DAY 28 YEARS AGO TODAY

- ONLY ONE CONFERENCE GAME TOOK PLACE

IERNIE CURRY’S ECHOES FROM THE PAST…

In the FA Cup, Consettwho had surprisingly ousted Gateshead in the previous round - went down by four clear goals to Mansfield Town at Field Mill. Carlisle United disposed of Shepshed Dynamo by a 6-0 margin in Cumbria and Darlington recorded a 4-1 success at Runcorn.

t was FA Cup First Round Day 28 years ago today, 16th November 1996, and because many of their members were involved in the competition only one Vauxhall Conference game took place.

That was at the International Stadium where Gateshead, in 18th spot and with only one home league victory to their credit, entertained fourth placed Slough Town.

There was little to enthuse about for the 472 spectators in a dull opening half but in the opening minute of the second period the Tynesiders found themselves a goal to the good.

Jeff Wrightson’s long ball was flicked on by Steve Harkus for Paul Thompson to hook the ball over keeper Paul Wilkerson and

into the net.

The visitors almost levelled matters immediately, Cliff Hercules sending over a cross which Steve Harper, on loan from Newcastle United, managed to palm away as the unmarked Lloyd Owusu closed in.

That set the signal for the hosts to take control and they doubled their advantage when Thompson`s centre found Harkus unmarked at the far post and he fired home an unstoppable drive.

The visitors eventually halved the deficit when midfielder Paul Hague turned Gary Blackford`s cross into his own net but Gateshead’s earlier efforts proved sufficient to clinch maximum points in addition to a rise of five places in the table.

The tie between Shrewsbury Town and Scarborough ended 1-1, the latter winning the replay 1-0 on the Yorkshire coast. Hartlepool United were held to a goalless home draw by York City, the Ministermen winning the return bout by three clear goals. Newcastle United maintained top placing in the Premiership despite being held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham United at St. James’ Park.

Keith Rowland put the Hammers in front in 22 minutes only for Peter Beardsley to equalise with 8 minutes of normal time remaining. It was his 200th goal in League football! Sunderland slipped dangerously near to the relegation zone after going down 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Andy Sinton and Teddy Sheringham were the marksmen in 13 and 82 minutes respectively. To add to the Black Cats’ woes Paul Stewart was given his marching orders. n

STADIUM INFO

Safety, Foul or Abusive Language and Racism at the International Stadium.

The most important people at the stadium on match days are you, our supporters. We have a commitment and a responsibility to ensure your safety at all times whilst you are our guests. You can help us in this important task by following these simple guidelines.

1) Do not at any times block exit doors or gangways.

2) Do not stand on any walkways.

3) As this is an all seater stadium we would request that you do not stand during the match.

4) Please act on any request made to you by our stewards.

5) In the event of any incident listen to the stewards, remain calm and follow the instructions given by the stewards. If it is necessary to leave any area do so quickly but safely by the signposted exits.

6) If you identify anything that you feel may be a potential safety risk please let a steward know immediately. Under no circumstances are you to tamper with or try to fix these. ALWAYS TELL A STEWARD.

Please note that the First Aid Room is situated in the players’ tunnel in the Tyne and Wear Stand. If you need assistance please ask a steward. We hope that you have a safe and enjoyable visit to the Stadium.

Gateshead International Stadium has a zero tolerance towards both of the above and should anyone be found to be using foul or abusive language or making racist remarks will firstly be asked to refrain and if they persist will be asked to leave the Stadium. It is a criminal offence to swear or make racist remarks in public and anyone who persists in using this at matches may be prosecuted.
