As part of its Uptown Nights music series, Harlem Stage collaborates with Harlem-based Sugar Hill Salon — one of the first chamber music series and artistic collectives that centers on black and brown woodwind artistry in classical music — and Concert Artists Guild —which has, since 1951, launched the careers of hundreds of emerging classical artists and ensembles — to curate an evening of chamber music performed by musicians from each organization’s ranks including Sugar Hill Salon’s Alexander Davis (bassoon) and David Valbuena (clarinet), and Concert Artists Guild’s Adam W. Sadberry (flute), and Fei-Fei (piano).
They will perform works by living composers of color including Paquito D’Rivera, Allison Loggins-Hull, Beata Moon, Paul Gabriel L. Cosme, Mary Watkins, Mauricio Murcia Bedoya, Tania León, Valerie Coleman Page, and Xiaogang Ye. The historic Gatehouse theater is the perfect place to enjoy chamber music!

Alexander Davis (he/him) is a New York City-based bassoonist who has been known for his ability to play “with poise and élan”- Cleveland Classical. He is a musician whose artistic intentions center on spacemaking, connection, and community-building within classical music. An advocate of creating equity in the arts, Alexander is the founder and Artistic Director of the Sugar Hill Salon, a chamber music series showcasing black and brown wind artistry based in the culturally robust community of Harlem, NY, and on the stolen traditional territory of the Lenape Nation (www.sugarhillsalon.com).
Alexander performed in the first all-black orchestra to ever hold a concert in the history of Carnegie Hall’s existence with the Gateway Festival Orchestra in April of 2022. He has played with American Composer Orchestra, St Paul Chamber Orchestra, The Knights, Harlem Chamber Players, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Tertulia Chamber Music, Albany Symphony, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Princeton Symphony Orchestra, American Modern Opera Company, Sherman Chamber Ensemble, and The North Country Chamber Players. Apart from playing in orchestras, Alexander has performed on Broadway playing in the pits for Phantom of the Opera and Lincoln Center’s production of Camelot. Alexander has performed in summer festivals such as Tanglewood, Ensemble Evolution, Banff Music Festival, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Maine Chamber Music Seminar, and the Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival. In addition to performing, Alexander is the Administrative Director of the Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival where he works alongside the Imani Winds to cultivate a new generation of innovative chamber musicians. He has also been part of the “Armory Artists Corps Teaching Artists” in conjunction with the Park Avenue Armory since 2018. Through the Armory, he serves NYC public school students by helping them gain access to tools for self-exploration in today’s society through music.
Alexander is adjunct bassoon faculty at Montclair State University and the Mannes School of Music Prep. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and Performance from SUNY Fredonia, a Masters in Performance from Stony Brook University, a Performers Certificate in Orchestral Performance from Manhattan School of Music, and is currently a Doctoral Candidate of Music at Stony Brook University. He has studied with bassoonists Frank Morelli, Bob Williams, and Laura Koepke.
Praised for her “bountiful gifts and passionate immersion into the music she touches” (The Plain Dealer), pianist Fei-Fei is a winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition and a top finalist at the 14th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. She continues to garner a reputation for her poetic interpretations, charming audiences with her “passion, piquancy and tenderness” and “winning stage presence” (Dallas Morning News), both in the US and internationally, including her native China.
Fei-Fei’s concert tours have taken her across the globe in concerto performances, recitals and chamber music collaborations alike. Highlights from her current season include solo and chamber recitals in eleven states across the United States; concerto highlights include performances of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 at Lincoln Center with the Pegasus Symphony, a special New Year’s concert with California’s Pacific Symphony, appearances with the Syracuse Symphony, Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, Flint Symphony, Amarillo Symphony, Boise Philharmonic, and Shenzhen Symphony orchestras. In addition to the traditional repertoire canon, her current season also features lesser-discovered works by composers such as Leroy Anderson, Florence Price, Clara Schumann, and Xiaogang Ye.
Deeply committed to sharing her joy for music and connecting with communities, Fei-Fei also engages students and community audiences through frequent outreach concerts and masterclasses. Activities from her current season include two special residencies with her Aletheia Piano Trio at the Oberlin Conservatory, Texas Christian University, and masterclasses at Idaho State University, Utah State University, and Bakersfield College.
Fei-Fei was showcased prominently in the documentary film about the Cliburn Competition, Virtuosity, which premiered on PBS in 2015. Born in Shenzhen, Fei-Fei began piano lessons at the age of 5. She is a graduate of The Juilliard School where she studied with Dr. Yoheved Kaplinsky, and is currently pursing Doctoral of Musical Arts degree with pianist Yefim Bronfman at Manhattan School of Music. Fei-Fei is also a member of the piano faculty at John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University and serves as Teaching Associate of Yefim Bronfman at Manhattan School of Music.
Named one of The Washington Post’s 23 for ‘23, flutist and educator Adam W. Sadberry is paving a distinctive career with his citizenry, creativity, and vibrancy both on and off stage. As a winner of Concert Artists Guild’s 2021 Victor Elmaleh Competition, he is making debuts in the 22/23 season with Chamber Music Detroit, Newport Classical, Scottsdale Performing Arts, Macon Concert Series, Strings Music Festival, Pro Musica: San Miguel de Allende, Northeast Kingdom Classical, Glema Mahr Performing Arts Center, Dumbarton Concerts, and more. Adam is tremendously excited to make his Merkin Hall debut in NYC during March 2023 where he will premiere a composition by Dameun Strange that is inspired by Adam’s late grandfather and unsung hero of the Civil Rights Movement, L. Alex Wilson.
Adam’s commitment to citizenry is reflected through his collegiate work. He is on faculty at the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) for the spring 2023 semester, and he has given residencies at Lawrence University, Northern Michigan University, South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, and Wesleyan College (GA). Adam has had performance engagements at Indiana University (Bloomington), Pepperdine University, and Georgia Southwestern State University, and he has given masterclasses at New York University, Oakland University, University of Memphis, Rhodes College, and the Harmony Project (Los Angeles). Adam’s work revolves around identity, his grandfather’s legacy, and mindfulness that is informed by Alexander Technique. His most popular lectures are Using Your Identity to Create a Relevant Voice in Music and Musical Journalism: Continuing a Legacy Through the Flute.
Adam has a strong foundation in orchestral playing. He is the principal flutist of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz, CA, he has played principal flute with the St. Louis and Detroit Symphony Orchestras, and he has previously held positions with orchestras including acting principal flute with Memphis Symphony Orchestra, flute and piccolo with the Des Moines Metro Opera, and orchestra fellow with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the `Minnesota Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Sphinx Symphony Orchestra, and the New World Symphony. Adam can be heard playing on the soundtrack of Disney’s The Lion King (2019) and in the Hollywood Bowl’s Juneteenth Celebration (2022) that included artists such as Chaka Khan, Ne-Yo, Billy Porter, Questlove, and Earth, Wind, and Fire.
Originally from Queens, NY, David Valbuena is a NYC based clarinetist and educator that has performed through out the US, Canada, China and Europe. He has premiered dozens of works for clarinet and bass clarinet both as a soloist and with ensembles such as Ensemble Mise-en, Tactus, and Analog Arts. His festival appearances include fellowships at the Sarasota and Bowdoin International Music Festivals, The Electro-acoustic Music Festival and the Montreal Nouvelles Musiques Festival where he performed in the Canadian premiere of Stockhausen’s final work, Klang. He is looking forward to joining The Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra in the summer of 2019. As a theatre musician David has performed in several off Broadway productions including the 2019 revival of the Fiddler on the Roof in yiddish as both a pit and onstage musician. David is also a teaching artist with the CUNY Harmony Program and is proud to be a woodwind instructor at PS 107x in the South Bronx and at the Castle Bridge School in Washington Heights. He holds degrees from the Manhattan School of Music and Queens College where he studied with Charles Neidich.

Lead support for Harlem Stage’s 40th Anniversary Season is provided by the Mellon Foundation.
Harlem Stage is the performing arts center that bridges Harlem’s cultural legacy to contemporary artists of color and dares to provide the artistic freedom that gives birth to new ideas.
For 40 years our singular mission has been to perpetuate and celebrate the unique and diverse artistic legacy of Harlem and the indelible impression it has made on American culture. We provide opportunity, commissioning, and support for artists of color, make performances easily accessible to all audiences, and introduce children to the rich diversity, excitement, and inspiration of the performing arts.
We fulfill our mission through commissioning, incubating, and presenting innovative and vital work that responds to the historical and contemporary conditions that shape our lives and the communities we serve.
