Welcome to Féile 2024
Féile, Derry’s biggest community arts festival, returns this August for the 32nd year. From August 10th - 17th, Féile 2024 will feature more than 100 events across the Bogside, Brandywell, Creggan, Bishop Street and Fountain neighbourhoods and Derry City centre.
Musical highlights at Féile 2024 include ‘The Gathering’, a one day festival celebrating the best contemporary trad and folk music in Ireland with performances from John Francis Flynn, Ronan O’Snodaigh and Myles O’Reilly and Lemoncello. Musicians from the Ulster Orchestra will perform at local care home residencies and The Whistlin’ Donkeys will play a massive outdoor concert at The Gasyard Park on Thursday August 15th. Electronic music and hip-hop/grime fans are spoilt for choice at Féile 2024 with big names such as Erol Alkan, Ivan Smagghe and Sello all due to play at the festival.
Féile 2024 has a packed programme of activities for children, young people and families with summer schemes, family fun days and bus trips throughout the week. The Greatest Show and The Big Family Night Out will bring some of the country’s finest magicians, musicians, acrobats and comedy acts to parks and green spaces across the neighbourhood. Large scale gatherings for families include the Party In The Park at Pilots Row on Saturday 10th August, Wan Big Street Party on Central Drive and the Lúnasa celebrations in Creggan on Thursday 15th August. Older people’s organisations have come together to produce an extensive programme for our older residents including days out, bingo, social events and musical performances at local older people’s residences.
This year’s Féile has its biggest ever sporting programme. The annual Colm Quigley Jog in the Bog, a highlight in the road race calendar, returns on Sunday August 11th. Youth soccer teams from the city will battle for The Ryan McBride Cup and The Pádraig Barton Cup. Féile are also offering a number of free bursary places for young people to attend the Kelloggs GAA Cúl Camp at Séan Dolans GAC.
Each year, Féile delivers a strong programme of political debates, discussions and talks, and 2024 is no exception. Themes this year include climate change, racism, reconciliation, the ongoing debate around what a new Ireland will look like, the worsening drugs crisis in our communities and the continuing demand for increased student numbers at Magee.
Panellists at Féile 2024 will include human rights lawyer Michael Mansfield KC, journalist and author Brian Rowan, Professor of Human Rights law at Queens, Colin Harvey and Professor Anne Campbell, Member of the UK Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs.
Féile 2024 includes an extensive programme of films and documentaries. Féile’s latest film production ‘Tony Doc’ which celebrates community worker and ex Derry City player and manager Tony ‘Doc’ O’Doherty will premiere at St Mary’s Youth Club. DJ Provai will host a homecoming screening of Kneecap at Brunswick Moviebowl. Nightly screenings at The Nerve Centre Cinema will include premieres of award winning films ‘The Irish Question’ and ‘Days of Trees’. The ongoing genocide in Palestine will be highlighted through acclaimed documentaries ‘No Other Land’ and ‘Where Olive Trees
Weep.’ Films by Dennis Harvey will highlight the issues facing refugees in Ireland in 2024. The work of emerging and established Derry film-makers will be screened throughout the festival including works by award winning film-makers Seán Mullan, Diana Cheung and Séan Coyle.
We hope you can enjoy us this August for Feile 2024.
Féile 2024 would not be possible without the support funders including The Executive Office, Derry City & Strabane District Council, Department of Foreign Affairs and the collaboration of the many groups, initiatives, volunteers and residents from throughout the Bogside, Brandywell, Creggan, Bishop Street and Fountain areas who have come together to shape and manage this programme of events.

A Summer Dance with Erol Alkan & Ivan Smagghe
Friday August 16th | 9pm - 2am 57, Waterloo Street Féile join forces with Ireland’s longest running electronic music festival, for a summer dance at 57 with two of the best DJs in the world, Erol Alkan & Ivan Smagghe.
The founder of Phantasy in 2007, Erol Alkan is an artist who needs no introduction. His creative life as a DJ, producer, label owner, radio host and collaborator has spanned decades. A ubiquitous and hugely imaginative remixer of bands including Tame Impala, Daft Punk, Justice and Hot Chip. Alkan has also produced bands including Duran Duran, Ride, Late Of The Pier and Mystery Jets.
Ivan Smagghe belongs to a top table of DJs that journalists like to lazily describe as “The DJ’s DJ”. He has the ability to play music like a raw conduit between famously obscure records whilst never losing sight of the dancefloor’s strobe soaked bodies. His genre defying/defining production from Black Strobe, It’s A Fine Line and now Smagghe & Cross has connected him and garnered the praise from the likes of Craig Richards, Vladimir Ivkovic, Paranoid London, Optimo, Solar and of course, his long time friend Andrew Weatherall - all fellow crusaders in the fight to prove that electronic music is so much more than a one dimensional soundtrack for a night on the lash, and so much more than an Instagram account. Advance tickets £10/13 on sale at www.eventbrite.com

Patrick Magee: Where grieving begins?
Saturday August 10th | 3pm
Museum of Free Derry, Glenfada Park
An enduring peace is only possible through a genuine understanding of the past. To understand the Troubles is to set them in the context of the historical root causes of the conflict, in order to grapple with its pain and its horrors; to grieve and then, perhaps, to heal. This is the memoir of Patrick Magee, the man who planted the 1984 Brighton bomb – an attempt by the Provisional IRA to kill the British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, and her cabinet. In an unflinching reckoning with the past, Magee recounts the events of his life. He chronicles the profound experience of meeting Jo Berry – whose father was one of five people killed in the bombing – and the extraordinary work they have done together. A chasm of misunderstanding endures around the Troubles and the history of British rule in Ireland. This memoir builds a bridge to a common understanding. It is written in the belief that anything is possible when there is honesty, inclusion and dialogue. Patrick Magee will be in conversation with Sinn Féin Rep to Europe, Former POW, Jr Minister, MEP and MLA, Martina Anderson.

The discussion will also consider why this Report is important now in the context of the British government’s controversial Legacy Act; the establishment of the Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery; and the various ongoing legal challenges against the government’s policy on dealing with the past.

Making the socio-economic case for a New Ireland
Professors Colin Harvey and Seamus McGuinness ‘in conversation’
Friday August 16th | 7pm
Pilots Row Centre, Rossville Street
While the challenges of a New Ireland are acknowledged, evidence is emerging that strongly supports the socio-economic case for constitutional change. Two expert contributors to the debate will be in conversation at Féile 2024 on the currentt position and likely next steps.
Professors Colin Harvey (QUB) and Seamus McGuinness (ESRI) will explore the opportunities that will flow from a well-managed transition to a New Ireland and outline how the preparatory work should now be taken forward. This is an urgent discussion that is of huge relevance to the North West, a place that continues to experience the harsh consequences of partition.

Séan Dolans GAC, Piggery Ridge, Creggan
The Empower Project & Creggan Neighbourhood Partnership welcome human rights lawyer
Michael Mansfield KC to Creggan for an In Conversation event on his latest book, The Power In The People, Not The People In Power. Part-memoir, part-manifesto, the book appeals to anyone concerned about our justice system, our wilting democracy - and the planet.
Through cases like Bloody Sunday and the Birmingham Six, through those of Stephen Lawrence, Hillsborough and Grenfell, Mansfield has seen the world at its worst - and its best - and argues that we can learn much from those who campaign against the odds. .

Anthony “Tony Doc” O’Doherty was born in the Brandywell on the 23rd April 1947. After moving to Creggan as a child, there began a lifelong love between man and estate. To condense his story into a short synopsis would be a criminal act. For those who know the remarkable tales, come along and hear them again because once, twice or thrice just isn’t enough. And for those who don’t know, come along and hear them from the man himself, because you wouldn’t believe it if I told you.
The Irish Question
Sunday 11th August | 5pm
The Nerve Centre Cinema, Magazine Street
A provocative, poetic and cinematic meditation on the prospect of a united Ireland from acclaimed film-maker Alan Gilsenan. With the likelihood of a border poll becoming an ever increasing possibility, do we really understand what that could mean for all those living on the island of Ireland? Or are we stumbling into some possible future as Britain once sleep-walked into Brexit? The Irish Question takes a fresh and sometimes surprising look at the dark trauma of the past and the unique possibilities of the future.

The Days of Trees
Sunday 11th August | 7pm
The Nerve Centre Cinema, Magazine Street
In this highly original feature documentary, Tomás, a middle-aged film producer, embarks on a journey of discovery with his friend and colleague, film director, Alan. As they progress, we witness first-hand Tomás’s unearthing of fresh and startling childhood happenings which had somehow eluded his memory. What follows is a profound pilgrimage towards uncovering how sporadic crises in adulthood, amidst an otherwise ‘normal’ life, had their roots in sophisticated sexual abuse by Christian Brothers in the late 1960s. This is the story of a man, not seeking vengeance, but seeking to transcend the trauma of his troubled past, ultimately finding redemption. ‘a remarkable documentary’ RTÉ ARENA ‘powerful, strong, inspiring’ TOMMY TIERNAN

Into The Weeds
Monday 12th August | 7pm
The Nerve Centre Cinema, Magazine Street
This screening of “Into the Weeds” is hosted by Hive Cancer Support. The film delves into the controversial topic of whether the widely used weed killer glyphosate can cause cancer. It features the compelling story of groundskeeper Lee Johnson as he battles against agrochemical giant Monsanto (now Bayer), the manufacturer of Roundup herbicide. With Glyphosate being commonly used by statutory agencies across Ireland, concerns about its impact on health and the environment are growing.
Refugees Welcome
Ireland is not alone in experiencing the rise of far right politics. Across the island there is increasing incidents of violence and intimidation against refugees, asylum seekers and minorities. This should concern us all. It is important to examine the conditions and historical context at play. These include government’s anti-migrant & anti- working class policies and rhetoric, colonialism, war, conflict, the climate crisis, capitalism and western exploitation of resources. As a people who experienced “No Black’s, No Irish, No Dogs” we must be active in countering the spreading of hate and division with a message of love and solidarity.
Féile 2024 features two films from Dennis Harvey, ‘The Building and Burning of a Refugee Camp’ and ‘I Must Away’. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion which will include the film director Dennis Harvey and Niamh McDonald from Hope and Courage Collective, a national civil society organisation that works with community groups, advocacy groups, trade unions, activists and academics to stop hate organising in our communities and workplaces. They support communities and civil society to stay grounded, caring and resilient in the face of far right hate, bigotry and extremism.

The Building and Burning of a Refugee Camp
Tuesday 13th August | 7pm
The Nerve Centre Cinema, Magazine Street
Three men seeking asylum in Ireland find themselves on the streets, caught between restrictive migration policies and an increasingly aggressive far-right movement. Arson has become an increasingly common weapon against property used to accommodate international protection applicants. Harvey’s camera humanises the people the far-right work so hard to dehumanise. The audience gets a unique insight into life at the camp before it was destroyed, as well as an insight into the tactics of the increasingly violent far-right.
I Must Away
Tuesday 13th August | 7.30pm
The Nerve Centre Cinema, Magazine Street
Floating between Ireland, Spain, Chile, Sweden, France and Bangladesh over seven years, I Must Away follows four migrants who have each left home to rebuild their life abroad. Narrated by a series of letters from the director, Dennis Harvey, to his grandmother, the film is a kaleidoscopic vérité essay which disentangles roots, land and identity, and explores the unequal distribution of rights and privileges, in our age of migration.
The Rent Strike
Wednesday 14th August | 6.30pm
The Nerve Centre Cinema, Magazine Street
Between 1970 & 1973 over 350,000 tenants throughout Ireland withheld rent in protest against rent increases, poor housing conditions and a lack of facilities. The story of this national movement, which ended in success in August 1973, is told for the first time in a new documentary, THE RENT STRIKE, using RTÉ archive footage and interviews with surviving strikers and their families. THE RENT STRIKE celebrates the inspiring story of this working-class campaign, with a spotlight on the women who led the pickets and protests every day across Ireland.

Féile sends our love and solidarity to his family and friends. Palestine remains a homeland denied, under constant bombardment with tens of thousands of Palestinian dead and wounded by bombs supplied by western governments. Stop sending arms to Israel. Ceasefire Now!

He befriends Yuval, an Israeli journalist who helps him in his struggle. They form an unexpected bond, but their friendship is challenged by the huge gap between their living conditions: Basel faces constant oppression and violence, while Yuval enjoys freedom and security.
Where Olive Trees Weep - No One Is Free Until We Are All Free
Thursday 15th August | 7.30pm
The Nerve Centre Cinema, Magazine Street
Where Olive Trees Weep offers a window into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinians under Israeli occupation. Ancient landscapes bear deep scars, having witnessed the brutal reality of land confiscation, expulsions, imprisonment, home demolitions, water deprivation, and denial of basic human rights. This emotional journey bares the humanity of the oppressed while grappling with the question: what makes the oppressor so ruthlessly blind to its own cruelty?
