Meet Mike & Lynn McAndrew, Owners Of Andy Lewis HeAting & Air cOnditiOning gA: Mike and Lynn- i know you guys live in gastonia- are you gastonia born and raised?

Mike: For many years we lived in the University area in Charlotte. We moved to Gaston County almost 10 years ago because we loved the feel of the community. Our daughter and her family moved here first, because of our son in law’s job in law enforcement in the Gaston area. We are involved in a local church, many community events, and school activities.

gA: do you have kids and/or grand kids in gaston county?

Mike: We have 2 daughters in NC, one lives in Gaston County. She has 2 children, a boy and a girl, who both attend New Hope Elementary and we all attend a local Christian Church.

gA: How did you get started in the heating and air business?

Mike: I had worked in the construction business for most of my life. I actually started working as an employee of Andy Lewis Heating and Air in October 2003 and purchased the business in December of 2004. We feel the most important thing in life is feeling good about how we impact others. Knowing that each day, we have the opportunity to help others. We believe our employees are the key to our success. They give so much to us and to our customers. We are very blessed that they have been major contributors in making us one of the largest heating and air companies in the area.

gA: what makes you different than other heating and air companies?

Mike: It has always been my desire to run a company that truly can be trusted, focuses on quality and is always honest with its customers.

Simply stated I want to provide the kind of trust that you have with a family member.

gA: what are some things gaston county homeowners need to be aware of now that it’s springtime?

Mike: I constantly hear people talking about how awful their allergies are this time of year. We may not be able to help you when you are out doors, but there are really good whole house filtration systems that can drastically improve the air quality in your home. Another thing to remember is that your AC has been collecting dirt and grime since last fall. With all the pollen in the air, the buildup on the AC can really increase your power bill, so a spring cleaning and maintenance is always a good idea.

gA: what do you guys do to relax?

Mike: We have always loved the outdoors, camping, hiking, and taking motorcycle rides. We enjoy attending local sporting events, with family and friends. Our favorite time though, is spent with our grandchildren, playing games, working on projects together, or watching a movie.

Jones. I remember sitting through “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, the second time in one day, thinking “I could do this”. That movie changed the course of my career.

GA:You also worked in Television designing and building sets and props?

Boyce: I began my career in the entertainment industry in 1985, I was hired as the Scenic Artist for Heritage USA, a Christian theme park outside Charlotte, NC. In early 1987, I had taken a position as a designer in the Creative Design Department. Later that year, I became the Creative Director for the park, as well as Art Director for the different live television productions.

GA: Tell us about designing theme park rides- and what is a “dark ride”?

Boyce: A “Dark Ride” is where a ride is designed for and built inside a building and there is complete control of the GA: How did you get started as an artist? experience. Scenery, lighting, sound, even the smell that the audience experiences are part of the overall design intent.

the E.T. Ride at that location. After opening the E.T. Ride there, I relocated back to Orlando. I was hired by Richard Crane productions as the Art Director for Pirate themed water Dark Ride being designed for a theme park in Italy. After completing the design

phase, I packed my bags and headed for Italy to Art Direct the building and installation of the ride. This ride, at the time, was one of the largest rides in the world. It is three stories tall, 18 scenes and was over 11 minutes in duration.

After returning to the states I continued with Richard Crane Productions as the Scenic Designer for the dark ride in Hong Kong “Rise of the Dragon”and also the Scenic Designer for “The Magnificent Adventure”, a motionbased simulator ride at the same location in Hong Kong.

After the Hong Kong projects I was named Senior Designer for Richard Crane Productions on the New Orlando Science Center.

When this project finished I relocated back to the Charlotte area and began a freelance career with Paramount Parks as a Show/Set Designer. At that time, Paramount Parks owned and operated 5 theme parks;Carowinds, Kings Dominion, Kings Island, GreatAmerica and Canada’s Wonderland.

GA: You did some work for Ferrari in Abu Dabi?

Boyce: Yes. Ferrari had an entire complex in Dubai. We were contracted to develop an idea for a ride that you would actually ride thru the mechanics of a Ferrari engine. This was a water ride where your vehicle is a boat and you travel thru different areas of the engine. We had to come up with the ride track layout and all the scenic elements that surrounded your vehicle throughout the ride. The entire project was designed and developed in AutoCAD 3D, then taken into Photoshop for colorization.

Here are a few of the projects that I have had my hands on:

We also designed two separate variety show theatres. We developed the interior of the theatres and themed them out to enhance the stage show.

Strawberry Crumb barS By the time you read this, the “pick you own” strawberry fields should be ready at Lineberger’s Maple Springs Farm in Dallas and elsewhere locally. Here’s an easy, delicious recipe for strawberry crumb bars that are great dessert, anytime with coffee, or as an after school snack.

Preparation:

IngredIents:

•3 cups fresh strawberries •1/2 cup white sugar •1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour •1/2 tsp baking powder •1/4 tsp salt •1 egg, beaten •1 tsp vanilla •1 stick butter •1/3 cup white sugar •2 tsp cornstarch

1. Preheat oven to 375ºF. Grease an 8x8-inch baking pan.

2. Chop the strawberries and set aside.

3. In a medium bowl, stir together sugar, flour, baking powder and salt.

4. In a measuring cup or small bowl, beat egg with a fork. Add the egg and vanilla to the flour mixture.

5. Using a fork or a pastry cutter, cut the butter into the flour mixture. Work with the dough until the pieces are very small.

Dough will be crumbly. Pat half of the dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.

6. In another bowl, stir together the sugar and cornstarch. Stir in the chopped strawberries. Spoon the strawberry mixture evenly over the crust.

7. Crumble the remaining dough over the strawberry layer.

8. Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until top is slightly golden brown.

9. Cool completely before cutting into squares.
