INDULGE IN FILM On behalf of our Board of Directors, tireless staff and generous volunteers, it is my honor to welcome you to the 9th Annual Gasparilla International Film Festival! Now in its ninth season, GIFF has emerged as an anchor event for Tampa Bay, rallying our community around the love of film and the art of storytelling. Last year’s festival captured more than 15,000 attendees from 980 cities around the world. This year should prove an even bigger success, not just in record-breaking attendance but in film quality and quantity. As President of GIFF, I am proud of the festival we have created for you all to experience and enjoy. GIFF continues to be one of the fastest-growing film festivals in Florida and this year’s program vows to go even further. There truly is something for everyone… from documentaries to features to FREE classic family films at our first-ever Family Day. We believe in the power of film to entertain, educate and inspire. Don’t just sit back and watch; take advantage of the unique opportunity that GIFF provides by engaging in dialogue with the stars, filmmakers and industry experts behind the films you will see. We invite you to “Indulge in Film” with us and get ready to binge on six days of independent film, industry panels and red carpet parties. Best,

Rachel Feinman Rachel Feinman, President Gasparilla International Film Festival

M O R E TH A N M O V I E S: A B O UT Q&A As a festivalgoer, you get the unique opportunity to have Q&A sessions with the filmmakers and actors. These sessions are among the most fascinating and rewarding aspects of the festival experience. Directors, producers, screenwriters, and actors discuss all of the details of the filmmaking process: the original idea for the story, the production details and challenges, the meaning of the film’s subtleties, future projects and anything and everything you want to ask. Be sure to stay after the films and discover this one-of-a-kind interactive experience with filmmaking.

OPENING NIGHT SPONSOR

THE SURFACE 90 MIN | USA | DRAMA | SOUTHEASTERN PREMIERE DIRECTED BY: Gil Cates Jr. EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: Jim Kacmarci CAST: Sean Astin, Chris Mulkey, Mimi Rogers, Jeff Gendelman The Surface is the compelling story of Mitch (Sean Astin) and Kelly (Chris Mulkey), two strangers, both at the end of their rope, who suddenly meet in the middle of the unpredictable waters of Lake Michigan. As they confront the secrets and sorrows that brought them there, they find inspiration in one another’s struggle to survive. Beautifully shot on the vastness of Lake Michigan and around the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area, The Surface is about how even on the darkest days there’s light, and tomorrow’s a new day. Writer/Producer and Milwaukee native Jeff Gendelman persevered for 18 years to bring this soulful drama to the screen. Under the confident direction of Gil Cates, Jr., and the deft cinematography of Jimmy Sammarco, the film examines how someone you don’t know can accidentally become your guardian angel.

IN ATTENDANCE: Sean Astin, Chris Mulkey, Jeff Gendelman, Gil Cates, Jr., Jimmy Sammarco (Director of Photography and Co-Producer). Sean Astin is an American film actor best known for his film roles in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Rudy, Memphis Belle, 50 First Dates, Toy Soldiers, The Goonies. Chris Mulkey is an American film actor who recently co-starred with Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips and has also starred in many TV shows including CSI, Boardwalk Empire, The Mentalist, Saving Grace and 24.

GIL CATES, JR.: DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT The Surface chronicles the struggle of individuals as they fight back against fate, the elements, and their own worst natures to find a spark of hope and friendship in darkness. This in many ways, represents the journey many of us go on in life, and for me, the making of this film. I was instantly attracted to the story’s themes. I read a handful of scripts and I don’t expect that every time I start turning the page, I will like the material. But when I finished reading The Surface, I couldn’t stop thinking about these characters that Jeff had created. The journey they go

22

on is extraordinary, and yet it is universal in theme. Out of their desperation comes a bond that neither man sees coming, a bond that keeps them working toward survival even when it seems impossible. Shooting the film on Lake Michigan in Milwaukee was as important a part of this journey as anything. The city and the lake have their own personalities that bring a unique atmosphere to the story, and we were glad to be able bring global eyes to the importance of preserving this unique environment. We hope you enjoy the film.

A mythical tree shrouded in religious lore leads Patrick (A once powerful patent lawyer for a Pharmaceutical firm sidelined by a life threatening disease) on a journey to discover the secret of the tree’s medicinal leaves. “The Tree” intersects faith, doubt and belief for all those that come into contact with its unique ability to heal.

LISTENING is a psychological thriller about penniless grad students who invent mind-reading technology that destroys their lives. They risk everything to invent telepathy, but open a Pandora’s box of new dangers. When it falls into the wrong hands, friends are forced against each other in a battle over the privacy of our minds and the future of free will itself.

After being cheated on by her boyfriend, Chris finds the perfect weekend isolation at a friend’s cabin. Chris’ friends decide to support her—crashing her solitude and turning her peaceful getaway into a radical exploration of societal constraints on sex and relationships. “The United States is the only country in the world that condemns children to die in prison. This is the story of one of those children, now a young man, seeking a second chance in Florida. 15 to Life: Kenneth’s Story follows Young’s struggle for redemption, revealing a justice system with thousands of young people serving sentences intended for society’s most dangerous criminals.“

Althea Gibson, a truant from the rough streets of Harlem, emerged as a most unlikely queen of the highly segregated tennis world of the 1950’s. Her fame as Wimbledon and US Champion thrust her unwillingly into the glare of the early Civil Rights movement and brings her story into a much broader realm of the American story.

On his 44th birthday, artist Trent Dion Soto voluntarily joined the homeless population, on L.A.’s notorious Skid Row for 30 days in an attempt to foster positive change upon the community. Trent’s goal was total immersion, as he wanted to live as they did, with zero outside assistance. Through Trent’s eyes, and personal interactions, you will experience, first-hand, the cheers, tears, struggles and dangers of the homeless epidemic via this raw, emotional expose.
