Dutchgirls shipwrecked in Hermann BY WILL JOHNSON Republican Sports Editor HERMANN — Matching up against Chamois for the third time, both the Lady Pirates and Owensville’s Dutchgirls were trying to win their first-ever Hermann Girls Basketball Invitational championship Friday night in northern Gasconade County. Playing from behind the entire night,

Owensville simply could not get the lead in a 39-36 loss to Chamois giving the Lady Pirates their first Hermann tournament title in the 13-year history of the event. Thirty seconds into the game, Chamois’ Miranda Brandt and Dutchgirl junior Mandie Robertson traded buckets for a 2-2 tie. That was the closest Owensville got to See Shipwrecked on Page 22

For the Owensville Dutchgirl basketball program, seven years seems like a long time. To head girl’s basketball coach Dwayne Clingman, the wait was well worth it last Wednesday during the semifinals of the Hermann Girls Basketball Invitational. “It was a big win for me, they know it’s my home town,” Dutchgirl head basketball coach Dwayne Clingman said. “It made it even nicer that we were able to win on Hermann’s home floor.” Down as much as 14 points in the third quarter, Owensville gradually chipped away at Hermann’s lead until an Emily Ellis basket with 1:34 left in the game gave the Dutchgirls a 44-43 advantage. OHS would survive the longest 94 seconds and escape Hermann with a 48-46 victory. Trailing by eight at the 3:15 mark of the first quarter, Dutchgirl points from Hailey Diestelkamp and Bailey Nelson cut the Lady Bearcat lead to five at 15-10 after one quarter of basketball. “I was really nervous at first,” Dutchgirl freshman Hailey DiSee Seven on Page 22

OHS wrestlers split final home meet with St. James, Pacific BY WILL JOHNSON Republican Sports Editor Nearly two weeks removed from their home tournament, Rod Barndollar’s Dutchmen wrestlers were looking to send seniors Cody Dolles, Tyler Davis and Alejandro Marquez off on a positive note in their final home meet of the season. Going against Four Rivers Conference (FRC) opponents Pacific and St. James,

Owensville would see mixed results out of the tri-meet at Owensville High School. Beginning the meet, Pacific and Owensville squared off while St. James watched. Starting the dual Owensville saw Chris Dolles (170 pounds) and Nick Plocinski (182) fall in their respective bouts. Scoring wins by forfeit were A.J. Harrell (195) and Ryan Escalante (220). Open at 285 pounds, Dutchmen fresh-

man Brent Korman hit that mats for Owensville at 106 pounds. Doing the best he could, Korman was pinned toward the end of the first period in 1:54 to Pacific’s Josh Franek. Losses by Casey Allen (113) and Wyatt Harrell (120) left it up to Kiowa Wright to get Owensville a win in a contested match. The Dutchmen sophomore came See OHS on Page 20

Farrell free throws help Dutchmen win at Hermann BY WILL JOHNSON Republican Sports Editor HERMANN — Following losses to New Haven and the host Bearcats at the Hermann Boys Basketball Invitational last week, Josh Vinyard’s Dutchmen looked to snap a four-game losing streak to get their fourth win overall on the season. Both were accomplished Saturday afternoon with a 38-35 nail-biter of a win over Wright City in the seventh place game of the Hermann Tournament. Trailing for virtually the entire first quarter, Owensville took their first lead of the game on a Drew Garner 3-pointer with :26 left in the quarter for a 10-9 lead. To start the second quarter, baskets by Garner and Landon Farrell bumped the Dutchmen lead to 14-10 at the 5:18 mark of the second quarter. As the quarter went on, Wright City battled through three ties and three lead changes to take a 19-18 halftime lead. Garner’s eight first-half points led the Dutchmen in the first two quarters. Just getting warmed up in the first half, Garner made his presence known to start the third quarter. Falling behind 21-18, Garner canned back-to-back 3-pointers reclaiming the lead for OHS at 24-18 with 6:10 to go in the third quarter. A Farrell bucket at the

5:50 mark capped an 8-0 run pushing the Dutchmen to their biggest lead of the game at five by a score of 26-21. While Wright City cut the lead to three twice, Dutchmen senior Keaten Matheny came off the bench with a pair of big baskets to keep Owensville’s five-point lead intact. Not going away quietly, the Wildcats

trimmed the Owensville lead back to two on a long buzzer beater from Ty Davis to end the third quarter. Wright City now only trailed the Dutchmen, 30-28. Entering the fourth quarter with just two points, Dutchmen freshman DeAndre Cox tripled that with a pair of buckets See Farrel on Page 17

JV Dutchgirls make best out of January BY WILL JOHNSON Republican Sports Editor Even with varsity tournaments limiting Owensville’s JV Dutchgirls to three games, Kelsey Heflin’s team took full advantage of the game time they got on the basketball court with three wins. Monday night in Belle, only two quarters were played due to low numbers for the Lady Tigers. Making the short trek west on Highway 28, OHS defeated Belle by a score of 24-2. Brookelyn Limberg led Owensville with seven points and was followed by Bailey Nelson with five markers. The Dutchgirl sextet of Katie Gregor, Danielle Roblow, Marissa Jett, Katie Havelka, Alayna Abney and Haley Ryan all had two points apiece for the Dutchgirls. Dutchgirls vs. Montgomery Co. Coming off a 45-8 road win at Festus two weeks earlier, Heflin’s JV Dutchgirls got their first taste of home cooking in over a month against Montgomery County back on Thursday, Jan. 17. Trailing throughout the entire first quarter, Owensville needed a desperation 3-pointer from Limberg to end the first half with the momentum and a 15-12 halftime lead. That led to a decisive 21-3 second-half advantage and a 36-15 win over the visiting Lady Wildcats. After an 8-8 stalemate to end the first quarter, freshman Gabi Edwards scored at the 4:05 mark of the second quarter giving the

Dutchgirls their first lead of the game at 10-8. Battling back to tie the game at 12-12 with 40.5 ticks until halftime, Limberg dashed Montgomery County’s hopes of a halftime tie with her 3-pointer at the buzzer. Holding the Lady Wildcats to a free throw and late basket, Owensville put 13 points on the board in the third quarter to enter the final seven minutes of basketball with a comfortable 28-15 lead. Holding Montgomery County scoreless in the fourth quarter, Heflin’s JV Dutchgirls went on to their second victory of the month. Nelson and Limberg each had points to lead Owensville. Courtney Hendrix kicked in six markers with the trio of Abney, Ryan and Gabi Edwards each adding four markers. Marissa Jett chipped in a late basket in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring for the victorious Dutchgirls who will return to action Thursday at Hermann.

AJ Harrell makes nine wrestlers to 100 wins BY WILL JOHNSON Republican Sports Editor Halfway through the annual Owensville Dutchmen Wrestling Invitational, 195-pound junior A.J. Harrell accomplished something that eight other OHS grapplers have done before him. Pinning Missouri Military Academy (MMA) wrestler Jacob Priester in 25 seconds in the third round of pool wrestling, Harrell joined former Dutchmen wrestlers Gabe Hollander, Beau Viehmann, Danny Branson, Tom Waters, Alwin Borgmann, Nick Gaut, John Farris and Jack Saebens among those with 100 or more career wins. “It feels good to have 100 wins now,” Dutchmen junior grappler A.J. Harrell said. “Now I just have to keep working hard to add to my win total this year and next.” One more thing that made Harrell’s 100th victory that much sweeter was having a lot of family on hand to witness the feat. “It was really cool to have virtually my whole family there to witSee 100 on Page 22

Owensville will look to avenge a 60-44 loss to the Bearcats during the consolation semifinals of the Hermann Tournament last week.

keeping Owensville in the lead at 34-32 with two minutes remaining in regulation. During what seemed to be the longest two minutes, a Garner bucket and two Farrell free throws were enough to hold off a scrappy Wildcat squad down the stretch. Firing in eight points in each half, Garner led the Dutchmen and all scorers with a game-high 16 points and was followed by the duo of Farrell and Cox with six each. Matheny and Dalton Littrell kicked in four points while Tanner Goodman had a pair of points in the first quarter to round out Owensville’s scoring against Wright City. Even though Cole Farris was held scoreless, he made up for it with a team-high 10 rebounds. Following a Tuesday home

Originally thinking he would have to wait until round four of wrestling to reach the century mark, Harrell’s open in round one counted as a victory due to his round two victory by pin over Festus’ Mike Smith in 28 seconds. “A.J. (Harrell) has come a long way since his freshman year of wrestling for Owensville,” Dutchmen head coach Rob Barndollar said. “He works hard every day in practice and I wish him nothing but success during the remainder of his Dutchmen wrestling career.” After ending the regular season in the Marshfield Duals Tournament, Owensville will begin preparation for their Class 2 District Wrestling Tournament in Clinton, Mo. during the second weekend of February. for Dutchmen wrestling after spending the previous six years traveling to districts around the St. Louis area. Due to several new schools adopting wrestling programs, Owensville was shifted to the western part of the state when the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) assigned districts for a new two-year cycle. More on the new district assignments along with results from the second annual Owensville JV Dutchmen Wrestling Invitational will be in next week’s edition of The Gasconade County Republican.

DUTCHGIRL BASKETBALL earned a sweep Monday night in Belle against the Lady Tigers with a 28-2 victory in a two-quarter JV game and a 63-25 win in the varsity contest. More on these games can be seen in the first edition of The Republican in February. OHS DUTCHMEN BASKETBALL recorded a Tuesday-night doubleheader sweep of Bourbon’s Warhawks in non-conference action at Owensville High School. Junior varsity action went to Owensville (32-27) while the varsity contest also was won by the Dutchmen by a score of 43-23.

Continuing to trade points throughout the third quarter, the Lady Pirates had an 8-7 edge to take a 33-28 lead into the final eight minutes of championship action from Hermann High School. Falling behind by seven with 5:26 remaining in regulation, Owensville began to make their move. Started by a Bailey Nelson bucket at the 4:04 mark of the fourth, OHS cut the lead back to two on a Kayla Charboneau 3-pointer with :53 left in the game. Two free throws by Chamois’ Allison Mehmert proved to be just enough to hold off one last Dutchgirl chance to force overtime. Diestelkamp paced Owensville with a team-high 16 points in a losing cause and was followed by Nelson with six markers. Brandt led Chamois and all scorers with a game-high 21 points. Owensville will return to action Thursday night back at Hermann to face the Lady Bearcats in a Four Rivers Conference (FRC) showdown with JV action at 6 p.m.

estelkamp said. “After we started coming back, we got confidence and used it to our advantage.” Surviving a 10-0 Hermann run to start the second quarter, Owensville went into halftime trailing the host Lady Bearcats 29-18. Third-quarter action saw OHS begin to make their move. Staring at a 34-20 deficit with 6:58 left in the third, a Taylor Payne basket started what turned out to be a 10-0 run pulling Owensville to within four points at 34-30 at the 3:31 mark of the third quarter. “It feels great,” Dutchgirl post player Taylor Payne said. “We’re the first team in a long time to do it (beat Hermann) and I’m proud to be a part of it.” An Ellis basket seconds later pushed the Dutchgirls even closer by a 35-32 score near the threeminute mark of the quarter. Lady Bearcat junior Jamie Gleeson scored the last four points of the third to push Hermann’s lead back to six at 42-36 with one quarter of basketball yet to be played. Following a Kristen Leimkuehler free throw that gave the Lady Bearcats a 43-36 lead, Owensville made another run at the midway point of the fourth quarter. Capping an 8-0 run, Ellis gave the Dutchgirls their first lead of the game at 44-43 with Owensville 1:34 from their first win over Hermann since a 57-53 victory back in January of 2006. traded baskets, Dutchgirl junior Mandie Robertson stepped to the free-throw line with 12 seconds left in the game looking to add to Owensville’s slim 46-45 lead. Hitting both ends of the one-andone, OHS now had a 48-45 lead. “I was thinking ‘Please Lord, if I’m gonna make a free throw, let it be this one,’” Dutchgirl junior Mandie Robertson said. Prior to Owensville’s win last Wednesday, Dutchgirl basketball last posted a win over Hermann back in January of 2006 by a score of 57-53 during the Randy Crowe era. In that win, Whitney Angell (Jaegers) had a team-high 18 points and was joined in double figures by Heather Fisher with 11 points. Other varsity Dutchgirls on the team in 2006 included Dea Dea Sieckmann, Cassondra Copeland, Molly Schaeperkoetter, Ashley Linhardt, Jenny Gooch, Ashley Havelka, Kelly Oldfather and Megan Walker. “I was pretty excited when my mom called me and told me we had beaten Hermann,” Former Dutchgirl basketball player Megan Walker said. “I was glad they won and that my sister (Allison) could experience beating Hermann.” Even though Allison was held scoreless against Hermann, she was still happy about the win. “It feels good to carry on the tradition of beating Hermann,” Dutchgirl sophomore guard Allison Walker said. “

OMS Dutchmen harriers claim NHSC title BY WILL JOHNSON Republican Sports Editor NEW HAVEN — Another meet, another team title for Lauren Gann’s Owensville Middle School Dutchmen harriers. This time around, it marked OMS’ first appearance at the New Haven ‘Short Course’ Invitational. This was possible with the meet being held after Labor Day allowing teams an additional week of practice before their first meet. Paced by Brannon Brocato (4th in 10:03.65), the OMS Dutchmen logged 29 team points to easily win the meet ahead of second-place New Haven with 52 points. “I was impressed with how both teams did today,” Gann said. “We’re continuing our tradition of winning after going undefeated last year.” Joining Brocato in the top 10 and in the medals was Bryan Candrl with an 8th place time of 10:08.81. Other OMS Dutchmen contributing to the team title included Michael Lahmeyer (12th), Andy Herrera (15th) and Timmy Isom (19th). Continuing her impressive middle

school run, Adrienne Aubuchon started her 8th grade season with a 4th-place time of 11:03.23 and a medal from New Haven. “I’m excited knowing we’ll have a full girls team next week at Linn,” Gann said. Just missing a medal by three seconds was Tabitha Davis who finished 11th. Grace Tayloe (16th) and Addison White

(23) also ran for the OMS Dutchgirls. After the middle school runners had their turn on the short course, it was time for the varsity girls to start their race. Looking to build on her freshman season as a state qualifier, Shaylyn Uzzle started her sophomore campaign with a See OMS on Page 15

After Friday night, it will be at least two years before the Salem Tigers and Owensville’s Dutchmen will do battle again on the gridiron. Due to the Tigers having to play a game within the South Central Association (SCA) next year on week three, both teams mutually agreed it would not be possible to play each other the next two-year cycle as alternate matching open weeks could not be found. It wasn’t until the fall of 1988 when the two teams began playing each other. Salem scored wins of 25-6 in 1988 and 68-0 in 1989. Another seven years went by before the two teams faced off again in the fall of 1996. In a pair of close games, the Dutchmen came out on top 21-20 in ‘96 and 26-20 in 1997 at Salem. During the game in ‘97, then Dutchmen senior quarterback Neil Nowack accounted for 378 yards of offense in the game. Nowack is now currently the head football coach at Fort Zumwalt West High School in O’Fallon, Mo. He replaced former Dutchmen head football coach Paul Day who is now the head football coach at Vianney High School in Kirkwood. Another two-year hiatus in the See Two on Page 15

Nolting’s VB Dutchgirls sweep first two matches BY WILL JOHNSON Republican Sports Editor Thus far in the beginning of the Kari Nolting era of Dutchgirl volleyball, it has been a successful start. Diamond Dutchgirls win at Steelville, 10-5 BY WILL JOHNSON Republican Sports Editor What a difference six days makes. That was the time between Owensville’s 20-6 loss to Sullivan and their next action at Steelville Monday night. Thanks to a five-run second inning and a three-run third, Tim Nagel’s Dutchgirl softball team broke into the win column with a 10-5 victory in Crawford County over Steelville’s Lady Cardinals. Trailing 2-0 after an inning, Owensville’s bats woke up in the top of the second.

Dowler second-half touchdowns spoil Falcon shutout BY WILL JOHNSON Republican Sports Editor WARDSVILLE — More often than not, you can’t give a good team like Blair Oaks a 14-point head start and expect a positive outcome. Dale Long’s Dutchmen football squad found this out the hard way Friday night on the road in Wardsville at the FalconAthletic Complex. Scoring a pair of second-half touchdowns, Owensville’s search for a win shifts back to Dutchmen Field this week against Salem after a 55-13 road loss to the host Falcons. “Anything that could go wrong did tonight,” Long said. “I thought we were going to come out more prepared than we were. I take the blame and we’ll have to get these guys ready to go next week.”

Nearly two minutes into the game, an interception and a fumble returned for touchdowns by Blair Oaks put Owensville in a 14-0 hole. Unable to stop the Falcon offense in the first quarter, OHS trailed 42-0 after 12 minutes of football from Wardsville. Kept out of Falcon territory the whole first quarter, a Devon Dowler run changed that midway through the second period. Faced with a fourth-and-two, Dowler gained 12 yards on the play and had 15 added to it on a facemask penalty against Blair Oaks. The play resulted in Owensville’s first first down of the game at the Falcon 31-yard line with 6:40 left in the half. Adding touchdown runs of one

and three yards in the second half, Dowler led the OHS offense with 50 yards rushing on nine carries. Austin Mayberry also kicked his first varsity extra point on Dowler’s third-quarter touchdown. On defense, Dowler led the way with six tackles, Dalton Adams had a fumble recovery and Derek Diekmann blocked an extra point.

to an 8-2 lead after three innings. Taking advantage of each other’s errors, both Steelville and Owensville plated two runs in the fifth inning giving the Dutchgirls a 10-4 lead on the road. Holding the Lady Cardinals to one run in the bottom of the seventh, Breanna Bunners picked up her first varsity win pitching all seven innings with seven strikeouts. A score from the junior varsity game at Steelville was not known at press time.

Lexi Fries was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning. Back-to-back singles from Morgan Belloir and Katie Havelka loaded the bases for Dayla Gruenloh. Delivering with a two-RBI single, Gruenloh would later score along with Havelka when Jaelyn Gauer reached on a Steelville error giving the Dutchgirls a 5-2 lead. In the top of the third, Fries (single), Abney (single) and Belloir (walk) all reached to load the bases this time for Havelka. Drawing a bases-loaded walk, Havelka kept the bases loaded again for Gruenloh. Connecting on another two-RBI single, Gruenloh gave herself four RBIs for the game and helped OHS

sports briefs GOLD CARDS will remain for sale from any OMS and OHS athlete for $15 until Friday, Sept. 13. OYFA FOOTBALL action at Cuba over the weekend saw the 8th grade win 46-26 along with the 5th (40-18) and 6th (19-6) graders taking losses.

Two • from page 13 rivalry led to their meeting in 2000 that will still be talked about for years for all of the wrong reasons. Before the end of the first half of Salem’s 43-0 win, then Tiger quarterback Joe Schuchardt was caught on video by Caleb Baldwin (former Dutchmen head coach Kevin Baldwin’s youngest son) ‘flipping off’ the Owensville sidelines. Three years later, the Dutchmen gave then first-year head coach Randy Crowe a sweet revenge win. Not only did OHS’ 18-7 victory at Salem in 2003 snap a three-game skid to the Tigers, it also clinched a district title for the Dutchmen. Two more years went by before the teams met again during Owensville’s run to the dome in 2006. Blowing an early lead in a 27-19 loss to Salem at Dutchmen Field, OHS improved on that to reach the Class 3 Show-Me Bowl. In 2010, Paul Schmanke’s final season as Dutchmen head coach produced a significant win in the rivalry with Salem. Two fourth-quarter touchdowns from Jason Kottwitz helped OHS to a 28-17 win marking their first victory at Dutchmen Field over the Tigers since 1996. Currently, Salem owns a 9-6 advantage in the all-time series.

Nolting’s • from page 13 girls a quick 6-0 lead. After Bourbon cut the lead to 6-3, fellow Dutchgirl senior Grace Schlottach recorded a kill before taking over serving duties for OHS. Adding three points and a pair of aces, the Dutchgirl lead grew to 12-3 midway through game one. Next to serve for Owensville was another senior in Taylor Payne. Catching fire, five of Payne’s next 11 points were aces. This ballooned the OHS lead to 24-5. Finishing off the JV match with an ace, Erika Ellis ended game one of the varsity match with a block for a 25-7 victory. Capitalizing from a Lady Warhawk error to open game two, Jahnsen returned behind the serving line to inflict more damage. Reeling off six points in a row in game one, she topped that with eight to open the second set. Trading errors over the next few points, Owensville got service points from Kristen Bauer, Alex Amptman and Mandie Robertson pushing the Dutchgirl lead to 18-5. Adding to her seven-point run in game two of the JV match, Anna Moritz rattled off five more to move OHS within a point of a sweep. Trying to get to double digits, Bourbon served their final ball into the net giving the Dutchgirls a 25-9 game two win and the match. Before Nolting’s varsity squad hit the court, Lori Payne’s JV Dutchgirl spikers opened the volleyball festivities. Behind the serving of sophomore Katelyn Schulte, Owensville raced out to a 7-0 lead before Bourbon called their first timeout of the first set. Following another Schulte ace giving the Dutchgirls an 8-0 lead, the Lady Warhawks answered with a run. Scoring nine of the next 10 points, Bourbon tied game one of the bestof-three match at 9-9.

After a Lady Warhawk error, Dutchgirl libero Sammy Saunsaucie took her turn behind the serving line. With an ace sandwiched in there, Saunsaucie helped the Dutchgirls take a 15-9 lead late in game one. Losing the serve for only one point, an Ellis kill allowed Breanna Baker to serve with a 16-10 lead in the first set. Out of the next nine points, five were aces from Baker leading Owensville to a 25-10 win in game one. Game two started in similar fashion with a Baker kill tying the set at 1-1. This sent Anna Moritz to the serving line for the lead. Six points later, the Dutchgirls owned a 7-1 advantage. Scoring eight of the next 11 points, Bourbon tied game two of the match at 9-9. Taking advantage of multiple Owensville mistakes, the visiting Lady Warhawks built themselves a 23-18 lead trying to force the match into a third set. Stopping Bourbon’s latest serving rally with a kill from freshman Madison Rowe, Dani Roblow took her turn at serving for OHS. Coming through with four consecutive points, Owensville took a 24-23 lead before the Lady Warhawks tied it at 24-24. Tied at 25-25, another kill from Baker gave Ellis a chance to serve for the match. Delivering a match-clinching ace, Ellis preserved a two-game sweep for the JV Dutchgirls with a 27-25 victory in game two. Two days later on the road against Linn, the JV Dutchgirls won in two sets (25-19, 25-15) while their varsity counterparts also swept the Lady Wildcats by scores of 25-13 and 25-12. No further information from Linn was available by press time. Owensville will host Salem Thursday starting at 5:30 p.m.

Attempting to overcome a recent illness, junior Hannah Baehr just missed the medals with an 18th-place time of 16:00.08. Emmy Dunlap (32nd) and Emily Koepke (34th) rounded out Owensville’s top-five runners. Grabbing the last two medals were Austin Brocato (14th in 14:48.10) and Andy Gerth (15th in 14:55.71). “Marc (Richardson) and Austin (Brocato) ran really well today in a good opener for them,” Candrl said. Two harriers also found their way into the top 15 and a medal. Making his high school debut, freshman Carter Brocato cracked the top 10 with a ninth-place time of 12:43.78. Just outside the top 10 but in the medals was 2012 state qualifier Blaine McKinney in 11th. “Our boys are young, talented and working hard,” Candrl said. “That’s a really good combination to have this early in the season.” Helping Owensville (80) to a second-place finish in the team standings behind Sullivan (61) were

Sam Blackwell (22nd), Danny Herrera (23rd), Destin Gooch (31st), Jacob Linders (55th) and Alex Wilka (65th). Saturday also marked Linders’ 18th birthday.

World Series fever is back Fittingly enough, in a year marred with injury after injury, the St. Louis Cardinals somehow find themselves back in the World Series with some unfinished business to tend to. Meeting up with the Boston Red Sox, Mike Matheny’s Cardinals will look to avenge a four-game sweep to the Red Sox back in 2004. Not only does today (Wednesday) mark game one of the annual fall classic, it also marks the 20th anniversary of the first home run to end a World Series since 1960. Toronto Blue Jay outfielder Joe Carter drilled a Mitch “Wild Thing” Williams pitch over the left field fence of the old Skydome for a three-run home run to win game six of the 1993 World Series over the Philadelphia Phillies. Perhaps Allen Craig making his way back on to the World Series roster after an early September knee injury will make the Cardinal road to a 12th championship in 2013 that much easier.

Dutchgirls spikers earn senior-night sweep over Cuba BY WILL JOHNSON Republican Sports Editor Seniors! That was the motivating factor for Kari Nolting’s Dutchgirl volleyball team Monday night in their home finale against Cuba’s Lady Wildcats. Seniors Brittany Jahnsen, Shelby Stiehr, Grace Schlottach, Kristen Bauer, Mandie Robertson, Taylor Payne and Alex Amptman were honored between the JV and Varsity matches for their contributions to OHS volleyball over the past four years. BY WILL JOHNSON Republican Sports Editor Nursing a 24-20 halftime lead against the Washington Black Raiders Saturday afternoon at Dutchmen Field, head coach Bryon Baker must have had a heck of a halftime talk with his football team. Owensville came out and lit up the scoreboard for 37 second-half points while holding the Raiders to a mere eight. With their 61-28 victory, Baker’s Dutchmen will go for their second Washington Junior Football League (WJFL) Championship in as many years this coming Saturday in St. Clair.

OYFA Football Playoffs 10/26 8th at St. Clair 2 p.m. (WJFL Championship Game) 5th, 6th and 7th grade seasons are complete

Benefiting from a fumble on the opening kickoff recovered by Sean Irwin, Owensville started with excellent field position. Needing just one play, Wyatt Ellis found the end zone on a 27-yard touchdown run and a 6-0 after the missed extra point. Starting at the Raider 30 on their next possession, the Dutchmen capped a short drive with a 6-yard TD run from Dustin Faragher. Fighting the wind in the first quarter, Owensville led 12-0 midway through the first quarter. Late in the first quarter, the Raiders got on the board cutting the Dutchmen lead to 12-8 with a kicked extra point at the 29.9

mark of the period. On the ensuing kickoff, Owensville had an answer in the form of Tanner Rector. Returning the kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown, Rector gave his team an 18-8 lead after one quarter of semifinal football. Winning the second quarter by a 12-6 margin, the Raiders trimmed the Dutchmen halftime lead to 24-20. In the second half, two rushing touchdowns from Ellis along with Faragher touchdowns via runs, a punt return and an interception return moved them into the Washington Junior Football League See 8th on Page 21

Senior • from page 19 looking for their third win in a row following victories over Union and Sullivan last week in Four Rivers Conference action. Trailing 5-1 early in game one, Payne delivered a kill and an ace cutting the deficit in half. Bauer stepped up with a pair of service points to tie the match at 6-6 before OHS took the lead and never looked back. Schlottach made her senior night memorable with a pair of aces giving her OHS team a 10-7 lead over Cuba. After a Lady Wildcat service error left Owensville with a 21-19 lead, Jahnsen served out the remainder of the set for a 25-19 win. Sophomore Hailey Diestelkamp did her part to help ensure a memorable senior night in the beginning of game two. Getting a kill and a block, she helped OHS to an early 2-0 advantage. That led up to a Robertson kill

and two Amptman aces for a 5-1 lead forcing Cuba to call their first of two time outs allotted in each set. Serving seven of the final eight Dutchgirl points, Payne ended her home Dutchgirl volleyball career on a high note after a 25-11 matchclinching win in game two. Payne’s JV Dutchgirls needed several runs in game one to go on to a two-game sweep in their match by scores of 25-19 and 25-7.

8th • from page 19 (WJFL) 8th grade championship game on Saturday in St. Clair against the Jr. Bulldogs at 2 p.m., at St. Clair High School. Last Wednesday against the Washington Green Packers in the first round of the playoffs, Baker’s Dutchmen raced out to a 28-0 halftime lead before going on to defeat the Packers for the second time in less than a week by the final score of 51-8 at Dutchmen Field. Going to the air, Ellis found Rector for a 15-yard TD pass and an 8-0 lead nearly two minutes in. Adding to his touchdown total, Rector scored on the ground from 11 yards away bumping the Owensville lead to 14-0 at the 6:16 mark of the second quarter.

Touchdowns from Faragher and Ellis in the final three minutes of the first half gave the Dutchmen their 28-0 halftime lead. With 4:09 left in the third quarter, Faragher dashed down field for an 83-yard TD run. Ellis’ run for the extra point started the running clock with Owensville leading 35-0. Two more touchdowns from Faragher rounded out the scoring.

Gauer, Havelka earn All-FRC softball honors BY WILL JOHNSON Republican Sports Editor Whether it was for their clutch hitting or their ability to get on base, the senior Dutchgirl softball duo of Jaelyn Gauer and Katie Havelka both earned All-Four Rivers Conference softball team selections last week. After voting from the eight FRC coaches, Gauer was selected to the first team outfield while Havelka earned her spot as a second-team infielder. Highlighting Gauer’s senior year was a walk-off single against Belle and a home run against Union in her final Owensville Softball Tournament. “I was excited when coach (Tim) Nagel told me I had made allconference,” Gauer said. I couldn’t have asked for better teammates throughout my senior season.

As if the two highlights previously mentioned weren’t enough, Gauer followed those with a walkoff single on senior night against New Haven and a go-ahead two-run n homer in her final home game against Cuba’s Lady Wildcats. Batting leadoff for virtually all of her senior season, Havelka had a knack for reaching the base pads

sports briefs DUTCHGIRL VOLLEYBALL had mixed results last night (Tuesday) in their regular season finale at New Haven. Misti Rutledge’s freshman squad won their match in two sets (25-16, 25-20) while Lori Payne’s JV team fell to New Haven by scores of 25-15 and 25-9. The JV Lady Shamrocks finished the regular season undefeated at 24-0 overall and 7-0 within the Four Rivers Conference. Kari Nolting’s varsity Dutchgirls ended their regular season with a tough loss in three sets to New Haven (25-14, 22-25 and 25-16). A recap of these matches can be seen in next week’s issue of The Republican.

Sullivan’s offensive attack too much for Dutchmen BY WILL JOHNSON Republican Sports Editor Looking to play spoiler Friday night, Dale Long’s Dutchmen attempted to deny Sullivan’s Eagles their second straight outright Four Rivers Conference title in football. Falling behind 35-0 at halftime, Owensville could not overcome the deficit and fell to 1-7 on the season following a 42-0 loss to the Eagles. Even though Sullivan took only three minutes to get on the board, the Dutchmen attempted to move the ball using the run on offense. Facing a third-and-three senior Dutchmen quarterback Jesse Lowder rattled off an 11-yard run for a first down into Sullivan territory. Lowder led Owensville with

62 yards rushing.
