Special section dedicated to locally owned family businesses This week the Gasconade County Republican is proud to present our second “Family Ties” edition, a salute to Locally Owned Family Businesses. Local business owners and operators are the cornerstone of a successful community. They have not only chose to live in our community, but have also made a significant investment here, proving not only services, but also jobs needed by our local residents. The local business owner is much more than just a corporate image. He is our

friend and neighbor. She is sitting next to us at church on Sunday and at the basketball game on Friday night. They are active in civic groups and proudly support local fund-raisers and groups. Our local business owners are those who truly make our town unique. The owners of the business featured in this section are proud to be a part of our community. We encourage you to show your support for all they do for the area by taking advantage of all they have to offer.

The Schlottach Family acquired the neighboring Roethemeyer Farm in 2004, planted their first vineyard, and restored the old house naming it The White Mule. The Roethemeyer family was one of the last of the old time farm families in the area still using a pair of white mules to farm their land into the 1980’s. The mules had a favored pasture right along a sharp curve on Highway 50 allowing local truckers to dub the curve “White Mule Curve”.

The White Mule Bed & Breakfast is a turn of the century farmstead house that is located in the heart of wine country in central Missouri. The winery has utilized an existing barn and several 100+ year reconstructed barns to create a unique atmosphere that gives way to a better understanding of the traditions and values of a time worth reminiscing.

the Josts of JOST TIRE CO. Frances and the late Gwynn Jost opened Jost Tire Co. in Feb. 1955 in a small shop on Second Street, just across from today’s Post Office. The business quickly grew and on Oct. 6, 1955 Gwynn and Fran purchased the Ficke Dairy at 206 E Peters Ave from E.A. Ficke and Pearl Ficke. Both of their sons, Ron and Don, worked in the business after the completion of their education. In 1978 they built a new larger building at the corner of Peters Ave & Cuba Street. In 2003, Don and Suzie Jost purchased the business from Frances Jost and Ron Jost. Don and Suzie’s son Matthew returned from college in 2005 and began working with his parents to grow the business. Since the semi-retirement of Don and Suzie, Matthew has assumed the management role and has become the third generation to run Jost Tire Co. In 2011, Ron’s son-in-law Steve Baehr, returned to the tire business and is now the sales manager. The tire business continues to meet their customers need today at 116 E Peters Ave. In addition to car, truck and tractor tires, they offer custom exhaust, brakes, farm service, plus full service oil changes with free pick-up.

Gottenstroeter Funeral Homes a

Our family, serving your family, for over 100 years.

a

1910 ~ 2013

The year was 1910 when W.F. and Minnie Gottenstroeter founded their Hardware, Furniture and Undertaking Company on North First Street in Owensville. They operated this business until 1934 when Milford Winter, who married their daughter Velma, received his embalmer’s license. Funeral business was conducted on First Street until 1938 when a more modern facility was built on South Second Street. Mr. Gottenstroeter and Mr. Winter worked together until Mr. Gottenstroeter’s passing in 1951. Mr. & Mrs. Winter operated the business together and were joined in 1960 by Mr. Winter’s nephew, Jerry Thompson. By the early 1960’s the business had grown and the need for a larger chapel with more seating was evident. So in 1963 a larger chapel and residence were added to the south side of the funeral home. This modern structure was the largest of its kind in the area and is still the location of the Gottenstroeter Funeral Home today. Mr. & Mrs. Winter retired in 1983, selling the business to Jerry. Jerry’s son Rick Copeland completed mortuary school in 1984 and worked with Jerry until Jerry’s retirement in 2005. The funeral home is still operated by Rick Copeland today. In 2011 Gottenstroeter Funeral Home expanded into Gerald with the acquisition of both the Oltmann and MeyerHilke-Millard Funeral Homes. The long history of providing quality funeral service in a dignified, respectful and caring manner will continue for every family we serve.

In your time of loss, you need someone with experience; someone with knowledge to guide you through.

A Family Tradition Since 1954 It all started in 1954 when Grandpa Max Lloyd purchased the “poor farm” from Gasconade County and started a private nursing home business. In 1965 Robert and Norma Lloyd purchased it from Max and Hilda Lloyd. They then constructed a 60 bed facility in Hermann and later a 120 bed facility was built next to it with the decision to close the original facility. In 1994 Cathy Lloyd purchased the original “poor farm” where demolition of the additions began in 1997 in hopes of restoring the original home. Cathy currently lives on the old “poor farm” with her boys Ross age 11 and Thomas age 9. In 1994 a third nursing facility was opened in Owensville, Mo where Norma Lloyd was born and raised by Ed and Viola Brinkman. It was in 1994 that the third generation of Lloyds took over the operation of the three nursing facilities. Today two facilities are operated by Cathy Lloyd. The 60 bed home was closed and donated to the City of Hermann in 2005 and is now The Robert Lloyd Community Center which houses the City Hall and Police station as well as a community center. The Falls Assisted Living Facility was then built on to the Health Center in Hermann at that time. It is about so much more than the Lloyd family, I believe it is about our extended family at the Frene Valley

facilities. My father who passed away in January of 2005 taught me so much in my life and was the most wonderful man whom I loved and I miss each day. My mom continues to be an inspiration to me each day and is a constant reminder of my family’s philosophy and to take care of those who took care of us first. My entire 45 years I have surrounded by hundreds of grandpas and grandmas that have taught me so much more than my college education. There is one gentleman in particular Gus Nicks, 99 that resides at Frene Valley South that told me when I was thirty-four that his only regret in life was not having chil-

dren and that I better get busy. I had Ross when I was 35! There is never a bad day at work when I see Gus and each day when I see him I count my blessings. I love my job because of the special people I meet and take care of each day.

Our founder, Max Lloyd.

Frene Valley Health Care South ~ Owensville, MO: Opened in 1994 with 60 skilled nursing beds. Over the years several additions have been made bringing the availability to 131 beds. Just opened this year is the Courtyard at Frene Valley, an outpatient therapy and wellness clinic. The Courtyard offers a comprehensive wellness and fitness program with equipment designed specifically for the adult and senior population.

America became great because of individual self reliance, hard working people like my grandparents and parents before me. They took chances, suffered, created things that helped the community and the country. I have tried to do the same but it is becoming difficult when the current President wants voters dependent on the government. This saps motivation when small business owners like myself work hard and the government takes it all away. We are living in an interesting time. We have a popular President, a bad economy and everybody is paying more taxes. That doesn’t seem to add up. Ronald Reagan said “ Government’s first duty is to protect the people not run their lives” What happened to this country?

Sons of Cathy Lloyd in their younger years with Gus Nicks – like their mom they spend many hours in the halls of the nursing homes learning so much from those who made our country what it is today.

Grandma Lloyd pictured Cathy’s boys Ross and Thomas – the 4th generation of Frene Valley.

It is not likely that Ross and Thomas will continue the family business – Obama Care is the law and small family businesses such as Frene Valley will be affected if this trend takes hold.

Broker/Owner (573) 225-0815

Cathlee’s Real Estate, Inc. of Owensville was established February 3, 1997, in a small rented office. Cathlee started her own business with only 1 agent, offering the community the same dedication and commitment to the real estate business since beginning her real estate career in 1990. In September of 1997, Cathlee purchased the historic 1896 New Hope Methodist Church Building. She renovated it, creating an excellent real estate atmosphere. Separate offices for agents, office space for attorney, access to loan officers, and a conference/closing room area were created. Cathlee’s Real Estate, Inc. has continued to grow. In March of 2005 a branch office was opened in Belle at 1011 Hwy. 28 East and in 2007 moved to 604 Linn Street. This allows us to better serve the Bland, Belle, Vichy and St. James areas. We now have 13 agents working 7 days a week to serve the community’s real estate needs. E THE WARDENS e Only one institution still open for business in Owensville is older than the Gasconade County Republican………the U.S. Post Office.

The Gasconade County Republican first started publication on Nov. 17,1905 from the merger of two local publications, the Owensville Argus and the Republican Banner. The first editor and publisher in 1905 was listed as Louis A. Nowack. The ownership of the Republican transferred to W. O. Boyd on April 22, 1910. He was the publisher until his death in 1933, when his widow became publisher. She leased the newspaper to Ralph E. Warden, who assumed managerial duties, and his sister, Mrs. C. S. Hutton, who became editor. The newspaper was taken over in early 1940 by Mr. and Mrs. Boyd’s daughter, Blanche and in June 1946 her brother, Charles R. Boyd became editor and published the newspaper until 1949 when the firm of Warden & Murray Publishing

Co. purchased it. Ralph Warden and Henry Murray as young men had been employed in the printing office by the Boyd family. In 1963 Murray sold his share in the publication to Ralph and Thelma Warden and their sons, Tom and Don. In 1977 the sons purchased their parents’ shares of the corporation. In 1987 Dennis Warden, Don’s son started working at the newspaper in advertising sales. Tom Warden retired in 2000. In the summer of 2008 Don

Warden also retired, leaving Dennis as the third generation of Wardens to own and publish the Republican. In 2012 Jacob Warden, Dennis’ son started working full time as the digital specialist for the newspaper. Over the years other Wardens have worked in the business including Tom’s daughters, Debbie and Diane; Don’s daughter, Denise; and Dennis’ other children, Ethan and Abigail. The current version of the newspaper traces its direct lineage back 117 years… back from its 1905 birth via a

merger, to the Argus in 1903, the Republican-Banner in 1900 and the Owensville Republican in 1896.
