Inspiration speakers from TEDxChange Here are two videos from inspirational speeches who were part of the TEDxChange line-up yesterday.

Hans Rosling scrutinises statistics, questioning assumptions about what data really tells us and how this can inform public health. He is Professor of International Health at Karolinska Institute and Director of the Gapminder Foundation.

Mechai Viravaidya was an incredibly engaging and witty speaker. He is a former politician and activist in Thailand who popularised condoms using innovative marketing techniques to manage population growth and to halt the spread of AIDs.

Health and development lessons from Coke Coca Cola provides a model for development professionals working towards the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) That’s the view of Melinda Gates of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation speaking at the TEDxChange yesterday, an independent TED event co-located at more than 80 locations around the world. Thanks to TEDxLondon for inviting me to participate in the event at the Science Museum.

“Coca Cola has been in Africa since 1928. It has been incredibly successful reaching the developing world.

We need to understand what makes it ubiquitous,” she said.

The MDGs are eight international development that members of the United Nations have agreed to achieve by the year 2015.

Mrs Gates listed the three things that she’d learnt from studying Coke’s business model.

“It uses real time data to feedback into market development, it has trained entrepreneurs to develop a distribution channel […] and it utilises aspiration marketing,” she said.

Measurement isn’t typically undertaken until the end of a development programme. Mrs Gates said that real time data should be used to adapt programmes as they are implemented to make them more effective.

The second element is using working with local talent rather than parachuting in skills. “Entrepreneurs know how to tap into market and get to hard to reach places,” said Mrs Gates.

Finally, marketing. “What’s coke’s secret? It has created an aspiration association with what people desire[…] celebration and unity,” said Gates.

TEDxChange, an independent TED event, took place on Monday to coincide with the five-year deadline of the United Nations Millennium Goals.
