Random Raven Don’t wing it for holiday, Winger it instead

By Gary Carra

Welcome back to Random Raven … albeit, the most unusual installment ever inked.

You see, dear readers, while this column has evolved into a reliable rendering of all things travel and entertainment, the original concept called for a more wide-ranging, interactive exchange of information and ideas.

Don’t get the Raven wrong. Entertainment options will always be abundant here. In fact, he’d be remiss not to mention Enfield’s annual ode to Independence.

The town’s annual Fourth festivities will occur on the Town Green July 7-9 this year. A mix of edibles courtesy of area eateries and “cents-less” acts of audio —i.e. free concerts — it’s easy to see why the Raven regularly attends this local gem. As usual, this year’s entertainment line-up pits local notables like Aquanett (July 7), Darik and the Fun Bags (July 8) and Trailer Trash (July 9), with nationals ranging from Winger (July 8) and The Michael Allman Band (July 9).

As for travel, perhaps it was also the Raven’s recent return from Bermuda that is the impetus for this month’s “And now for something completely different” format.

Hope you enjoy and a special thanks to Friendship Tours —specifically our friends, Donna Milliken and Eve Magoon for making that cruise happen — and happening!

RAVEN-OUS FOOD REMEDY:

An old-school tip for those fortunate to be opening up their summer homes. Sure, the fridge seems to be humming nicely after the long winter. And everything in the freezer certainly seems frozen. But how do you know, with any certainty, that there wasn’t a power outage, everything spoiled, than refroze? Just listen to the Raven’s beach neighbor Jimmy. “Here’s whattaya do,” Jimmy explained when the same query was posed in the communal courtyard many moons ago. “You take a da cup, fill with water, and you putta in the freezer. When it freezes, take a penny, putta da penny on top. If it’s on a da top when you come back, it’s a good. If it’s a on da bottom. Dat’sa no good!”

Once again, the live music organizers of Enfield’s annual ode to the Fourth of July prove that they were far from “winging it” when it came to putting together the 2023 line-up. Need proof? Platinum recording artists Winger.
