Editorial If we could have any month forever, like Groundhog day, it would be May. Spring moves into early summer; for the first time you feel warm, no, properly hot in the garden; everything is looking at its freshest and best.

In Cublington it feels like the village has woken up after hibernation and everyone trundles past our house when we're mowing the lawn. Oh look, there's Mike and Sandy or Will and Henry off to tennis. Is that the Brisk Walkers? They seem to have Spring in their step. And cricket's started? The Friday BBQ? With Pimms? Make mine a large one.

May brings longer days and with the dawn chorus it is so much easier to get out of bed in the mornings. Any other early risers will agree that the sunrises of late have been well worth the early start to the day. We saw a ‘Sun Pillar’ for the first time recently - absolutely stunning. Although very rare apparently they were seen all across the country.

May is also the month for eating fresh British grown asparagus.

What could be more marvellous!

There is a real buzz of excitement within Cublington’s tennis and cricket clubs at the moment. An immense amount of hard work by volunteers keeps these clubs going and Cublington are fortunate to have some very committed people. There are new members, new/improved facilities and renewed energy as the seasons begin. With so many clubs nationally struggling and indeed folding it is all credit to these volunteers that our clubs thrive.

Great too that the parish council have plans to upgrade the playground area and things move forward with the exciting North Field proposals.

Good Luck to the local young who have exams starting this month. We are rooting for you.

In this editorial we want to also highlight the amazing job that the Crier team do and in particular Gary Brazier. I know of many people far and wide who love dipping into The Cublington Crier. This is just another thing that makes us quite a unique village.

Our families keep themselves involved in our lives and local community that they too have grown to love as we do. It is also published on line each month (issuu.com).

With all best wishes at this beautiful time of year to all our readers wherever you are.

Notes from a small (Cublington) Parish Council Residents will have noticed a few fly tipping incidents in and around the village recently. It was ironic that the most recent illegal tip was down Reads Lane in advance of the community litter pick which was a great success over 30 black sacks of rubbish gathered by a great turn out of volunteers from Cublington. Well done all. For information, you can report any illegal fly tipping by emailing streetscene@aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk.

Unless you have been on an inter- galactic cruise you will know we have a general election. A peculiarity of the election is the impact on local government, where a period of "purdah" occurs during pre-election. What this means is that Council officers with politically restricted posts or who are employed in connection with the elections should abstain from campaigning or canvassing.The official Local Government Purdah guideline also states that no council leader is allowed to take part in photo opportunities such as the opening of a new council facility.The vast majority of public engagements, meetings and contracts will be put on hold until after the election.I am sure our own Parish Council will remain resolutely neutral during purdah, and the Minutes from the Parish Council will provide detail on local issues in flight. Nevertheless, some would prefer to see the Speaker role established as a separate entity, and for the Buckingham constituency to have its own MP? I am sure that debate will continue for some time.

So for these notes, in the spirit of global Britain we can go off "piste" (french of course meaning "off track").

The English language has absorbed words from cultures the world over. There are quite a few Gaelic words of course - banshee, phoney, slogan (from the gaelic sluagh-ghairm meaning battle cry), brogue and of course hooligan! Tory of course is a gaelic word meaning cattle rustler! For balance the Liberals used to be called Whigs - another gaelic word meaning cattle or horse drover - so figure that out? The following are some English words whose origins

lie in the Hindi, Urdu or Sanskrit languages spoken in India, Pakistan and other countries.

Purdah of course is originally a persian word - meaning veil or seclusion. Quite a few words from the Asian/Indian sub continent have entered the english language. Some surprising perhaps? For example, Avatar - in Hinduism, an avatar is the manifestation in human or animal form of a god, especially Vishnu. The word first appeared in English in the 18th century and derives ultimately from the Sanskrit word avatara meaning descent. Or Bungalow - a one-storied house derived from the Hindi word bangla meaning, literally, in the style of or belonging to Bengal.

The word bungalow in English dates back to the 17th century when it was used to refer to a type of cottage built in Bengal for early European settlers. Then we have Chutney, Cot derives from the Hindi word khat, meaning a bedstead or hammock arrived during the 17th century, Juggernaut arrived in English in the 19th century and derives from the word Jagannath, a form of the Hindu deity Vishnu, Loot derives from the Hindi verb lut, meaning to plunder or steal, Shampoo arrived in English in the 18th century and derives from the Hindi word champo, meaning to squeeze, knead or massage and finally Yoga - originally a Sanskrit word meaning yoking or union. It refers to a system of Hindu philosophy concerned with achieving reunion with the divine. A part of this discipline involves meditation, breath control and the adoption of certain postures, which is how the word came to have the sense of a system of physical exercise. It entered English in the 19th century.

A few weeks ago we were on the other side of the world in New Zealand, on a tour of North and South islands. Our group consisted of twenty five people from various parts of the world, including Australia, America, Indonesia, Switzerland, and five from the UK. As we got to know people, we found that two UK ladies in the group were from Yorkshire, and the third lady was from . . . Stewkley.

It was a complete shock to us as we had never met the Stewkley lady (Carol) before, and to also find out she actually uses the Unicorn here in the village.

Now what are the chances of that?

V I L LAG E S P R I NG C L EA N The annual village litter pick took place on 8 April to scour the lanes around Cublington for litter. A record 20 wannabe Wombles turned up in high viz jackets and armed with many bin liners. Boy, did we need them! In a half mile stretch of the Stewkley Road alone we filled 12 bin liners.

Who? Why? Grrr! Still, good job done. Note to Great Uncle Bulgaria - let's do it in March next year before the hedgerows start growing.

Pantomime ‘get together’ Yes Darlings.

Dear friends, Lots of groups of mums-to-be and new mums have traditionally met together to discuss everything from where they are in the process of motherhood to the state of the world and everything in between.Once upon a time it would have been over a pot of tea and a slice of Victoria sponge. Now it is more likely to be a Costa coffee and an almond croissant.

May ends with a special Christian festival called The visit of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Elizabeth.This day tells the story of when a young girl called Mary, from Galilee, went to meet her older cousin Elizabeth (who was declared to be barren) who lived in the hill country of Judea to the south because both have discovered they are pregnant with babies who were going to be very important in the life of the people of the Jewish faith and the

fledgling society which became Christianity.

The Bible passage comes from the Gospel of Luke 1:39-56.and includes the beautiful passage known as the Magnificat which begins:"My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour....." which the Church traditionally uses in evening prayer.

As we rejoice in all the new life around in the natural world let us pray for all new mums in all sorts of circumstances.

The first postage stamp issued in England May 6, 1840 It is the third and last month of the season of spring.

The birthstone of May, the emerald, symbolizes success and love.

May in the Northern Hemisphere is similar to November in the Southern Hemisphere. May was once considered a bad luck month to get married.

"Just Acapella" review Thanks to the talent spotting and persuasive skills of Evelyn Griffiths we were able to book this 20 strong "Just Acapella" group to come to Cublington for an evening of song in St Nicholas Church. It is great to have such a good acoustic setting and be able to invite singers to perform. Indeed some of the group travelled from Hertfordshire and London to make this event happen.

They had a great selection of music and obviously really enjoyed singing for another full St Nicholas audience.

The harmonies were very professional and it was hard to beleive that this was all unaccompanied singing .

The night passed by really quickly, so that the group could also relax in the Unicorn and provided some spontaneous songs for those villagers who had missed the evening .

The event, including the bar and raffle raised over £650 and we are hoping that they will return in the Autumn.

Better backs for gardeners!

Spring has finally sprung and the sunshine has sent us into our gardens in droves. Although gardening can be good for the mind, it can play havoc with your body. Follow our tips for better backs and don’t let an injury spoil your fun.

• Before doing any physical exercise, warm up first with a walk and some gentle stretching.

• Take regular breaks and change position between jobs to avoid tiredness, overuse and injury.

• Keep your back straight when lifting and use your knees, thighs and arms to help. Don’t try to lift too much at one time – particularly those bags of compost!

• When digging, avoid twisting and straining and don’t forget to take regular breaks.

• Use kneeler seats or mats when planting and don’t overstretch by working too far in front of you.

• Mow a little at a time, keeping upright.

• Avoid overstretching when pruning by using long-handled shears and use secateurs with a cut and hold action.

• If using electric hedge trimmers don't hold them too far in front of you.

• Consider the planning of your garden – raised flower beds may save you twinges in the long run.

If you have any aches or pains consult a Chartered Physiotherapist for treatment and advice.

Cublington Parish Council has a vacancy for Clerk to the Parish Council / Responsible Finance Officer.

This is a part time role of around 20 hours per month which involves working from home and attending evening meetings (roughly eight meetings per year plus occasional committee meetings).

The Clerk’s responsibilities include preparation of agendas and minute taking for council meetings and committees, liaising with outside bodies, advising on procedures, actioning the council’s decisions, acting as the council’s financial officer and keeping the council’s financial records. This is a very varied role, which will require you to have basic computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheet maintenance and internet access (laptop provided); and most importantly a flexible attitude.

SUN PILLARS Sun pillars are beautiful and rare atmospheric optical phenomena that occur during sunrise or sunset when the sun is near or even below the horizon. They form by sunlight reflecting off the surface of numerous tiny falling ice crystals suspended in thin, high-level clouds (like cirrostratus clouds).The vertical shafts or columns of light extending upward or downward from the sun typically last up to an hour.

Pillars are not actually vertical rays, they are instead the collective glints of millions of ice crystals.

Since they are caused by the interaction of light with ice crystals, light pillars belong to the family of halos. The crystals responsible for light pillars usually consist of flat, hexagonal plates, which tend to orient themselves more or less horizontally as they fall through the air. Their collective surfaces act as a giant mirror, which reflects the light source upwards and/or downwards into a virtual image. As the crystals are disturbed by turbulence, the angle of their surfaces deviates some degrees from the horizontal orientation, causing the reflection (i.e. the light pillar) to become elongated into a column. The larger the crystals, the more pronounced this effect becomes.

Unlike a light beam, a light pillar is not physically located above or below the light source. Its appearance of a vertical column is an optical illusion, resulting from the collective reflection off the ice crystals, only those of which that appear to lie in a vertical line direct the light rays towards the observer (similar to the reflection of a light source in a body of water).

They are unusual and as such have been described as comets: "Odd sunrise this morning, like a comet dropping out of the sky.” After the array of sun pillars seen on Thurs 6th April just before the warmest day of the year The Met forecasters said sun pillars are impossible to predict: "We cannot forecast optical phenomena," a spokesperson said. "Sun pillars look very pretty if you are lucky enough to spot one. They are formed by the light reflecting of the ice crystals in high wispy clouds. The formation has to be just right for it to take place and we cannot predict it.” Solar or Sun Pillars are only one form of Light Pillar. You can also get Lunar or Moon Pillars caused by the moon’s light reflecting off ice crystals.

"A present for Mother," said Pa. It's 'sparagus stuff what the Toffs eat " His friend said "It's a rum-looking plant, Can I have the green ends for my rabbits?" said Pa "Aye, cut off what you want.

He cut all the tips off one bundle, Then some more friends arrived one by one, And all of them seemed to keep rabbits Pa had no green ends left when they'd done.

When he got home the 'ouse were in darkness, So he slipped in as sly as a fox, Laid the 'sparagus on kitchen table And crept up to bed in his socks.

He got in without waking Mother, A truly remarkable feat, And pictured her telling the neighbours As 'twere 'sparagus-what the toffs eat.

But when he woke up in the morning It were nigh on a quarter to ten, There were no signs of Mother, or breakfast Said Pa, "What's she done with her-sen?"

He shouted "What's up theer in t' kitchen?"

ASPARAGUS FEST

Asparagus is the best crop of the year, without question. Gardeners and cooks will know that certain vegetables taste so much better when properly fresh from the plant or from the ground; new potatoes, peas and sweetcorn all fall into this category of crops that are full of flavour and sweetness when just picked, but the sugars begin to turn to starch very quickly. The time from plot to pot, from fork to fork is vital. But there is no other vegetable that has such a sumptuous, delicate flavour at the moment it is picked as asparagus. If you have never eaten asparagus fresh from the plant find a PYO farm or friendly allotmenteer, or better still, plant your own. You will never regret the effort.

It takes effort and above all patience to grow asparagus successfully. Give as much space as you can to your asparagus bed. As a rule of thumb each plant needs a minimum of two feet by two feet and six plants at least to keep you in the asparagus style to which you would like to become accustomed.

Add plenty of manure and grit to aid drainage.

The more of both that you can add on Cublington’s heavy clay the better. Dig a foot deep trench and then form a ridge along the bottom over which you lay the asparagus plants. The roots should trail down the ridge like the tentacles of an octopus.

The Victorians in general loved asparagus. A large part of Battersea Park’s 200 acres was given over to asparagus beds and the crops were known as Battersea Bundles. Rather than our two month window for cropping, the Victorians would dig up the plants in the autumn and replant them on hot beds, filled with fresh manure. The heat given off persuaded the plants to provide a second crop well into the autumn and up to Christmas. Not all Victorians loved asparagus, though.

Chamber maids, whose job it was to empty the chamber pots… well, you get the picture.

One of our favourite ways to enjoy the crop is as asparagus soldiers for soft boiled eggs: To serve four: Add four eggs to a pan of boiling water and simmer for five minutes until soft boiled.

Add 24 asparagus spears to boiling water for no more than three minutes until they are firm but not crunchy (‘al dente’).

Bring eggs and spears to the table. Sit the eggs in egg-cups and take off the tops. Add a dash of white wine vinegar, a small knob of butter and pepper and salt for instant hollandaise sauce.

Dip in the spears and enjoy the best meal you’ll have all year.

May - the season of asparagus

resist cutting any spears. In the third year (Spring 2019 if you plant now) you can cut from the moment they appear until the end of May, and by the fourth year you can cut until the end of June. Thereafter you must leave the plant to grow, photosynthesise and get energy back to the roots.

And when you come to harvest your crop, have a pan of water boiling on the stove, go to the veggie plot, cut the spears then run back to the kitchen as fast as you can. Add a touch of butter and eat it with your fingers. Queen Victoria did.
