Editorial With the recently improved weather and inspired by last month’s open gardens, this month’s editorial touches on spring, for many of us, the best of the four seasons.

The Cricket and Tennis Clubs and those volunteers on Orchard Ground Committee who gave up their time on Easter Saturday to spruce up and tidy up the pavilion and flower beds on the Orchard Ground environs. Your help really makes a difference and our facility is the envy of many visiting teams.

Well done all!

Many years ago, the most attributed poet to have ever lived, Mr A. Nomonous wrote the following poem: The spring is sprung, the grass is riz.

I wonder where the boidie is.

They say the boidie’s on the wing.

But that’s absoid. The wing is on the bird.

Wanted..

As a new gardener, I know exactly where the boidies is, as they is in my garden (excuse my grammar) eating my grass seed – that’s why my grass ain’t riz yet!

Over the years, countless poets have been inspired to write lovely words about spring, the countryside, rain or any other subject. But if you are out in the countryside, on your own, without your plastic mac when it starts to rain, it is difficult to see where the inspiration comes from. What I am trying to say is so often the way we see things, or feel things, or react to things are solely dependent on the frame of mind we are in at the time, if you are in a receptive mood you take in all the good things whatever they happen to be.

The last few weeks have been wonderful, the sun has been a regular visitor, I love the smell of fresh grass from my garden, yellow daffodils and white snowdrops blossoming and the birds, bees and butterflies doing their thing.

This will be our first spring in our new house and it has been wonderful watching the garden come to life. But today, as I looked out, the sunshine was gone, heavy clouds and then rain had taken the sunshine out of spring. But then, a simple small act of kindness to a stranger made a huge difference, yes the rain still fell and the sky was overcast, but on the inside, I was shining.

In this life, I have found time and time again that we are most alive when we stop to help another. I truly believe that we are most ourselves when we are sharing love, spreading joy, and doing all we can to make this world a better place Don’t go through life just existing. Live! Be the most alive you can be by sharing all the love and joy that is within you, and please boidies, leave my grass alone!

Notes from a small (Cublington) Parish Council

Julie Merriman has been successful in securing WREN funding for a complete refit of the playground. Well done to her and the Parish Council for their application and success.

Work on the playground will start end of the summer.

Also Transport for Bucks have completed their survey and the new gates for each of the four roads will be installed during June. We are hoping they will make a pleasing sight as well as perhaps a small impact on driver behaviour. Hopefully we will also get suitable road painting to complement.

Finally, Best Kept Village competition judges will be visiting Cublington in June. I hope residents will make a special effort to tidy their boundaries, hedges, walls etc.

Community & Emergency Services Day 2017 NEW VENUE! Saturday 22nd July – 10.30am-5pm Entry £5 per person (kids under 5 go free) Here at Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, we are excited to announce that we will be hosting this year’s Community & Emergency Services Day! Historically held at Waddesdon Manor until last year, this year’s new venue will offer a fabulous day out, with free, unlimited steam train rides included throughout the day!

Join us at The Railway for a fun-filled family day out with all your local Emergency Services, and lots of local charities from the Helen & Douglas House, to the RSPCA and Tiggywinkles.

There’ll be plenty to do and see! Climb in a fire engine; speak to the police; examine an ambulance; learn about many of your local community services; and enjoy steam trains - full size, miniature and model! Not forgetting our museum and visitor centre with café and shop. Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnics. Entry: £5 per person (age 5+).

There is still time to book a stall – if you work/volunteer at a local charity or offer a local service, please let us know – stalls are free.

• SAVE THE DATE: Summer event at the Orchard Ground Pavilion – Saturday 9th September (tbc) – family barbecue and fun events with live music • First Aid training – Mark Cheetham one of our members will be running first aid training for anyone who wishes to attend – all funds raised go to Orchard Ground.

• Remember – the OG is your facility – it can be booked for parties, weddings etc. It is a fantastic venue with lots of outdoor space.

• New doors have been installed in the Biggs Pavilion (as the others were old and could not open fully anymore).

• New picnic benches at the Biggs Pavilion courtesy of the cricket club! Thanks!

• Fundraising is vital to ensure that the facility is well maintained and all of the clubs who use the Orchard Ground contribute to its upkeep financially • 100 Club – ticket sales are just being finalised with the Cricket Club - first two draws will take place shortly and will be reported in next month's Crier.

• Orchard Ground Committee would like to again thank Doug Merriman for being our volunteer maintenance officer, he is doing a sterling job keeping the committee up to date with any repairs required and generally keeping a watchful eye on the pavilion.

• We are all volunteers on the OGC and would welcome more members to ensure that this lovely village amenity continues to thrive • Next Meeting Thursday 22nd June 8pm @ Biggs Pavilion new volunteers would be very welcome.

Hi, My name is Katrina Ing and I am researching my Family Tree, my maiden name was BIGGS and I have found that I am related to the farming Biggs of Cublington. We visited last year and took details from the headstones in the churchyard and having seen on your website that the Parish Records are still held I was wondering if any if information can be passed on to me about Births, Marriages and Deaths etc. It does say "Volume 1 of the Parish records, baptism’s marriages and burials from 1566 to1812, a hard copy is held in the Church and Roy Shons, Church Warden has them on a laptop, both are available on request" Would you be willing to help me fill in some of the gaps? Dear Mr. Shons, Thank you very much for the opportunity to look at and note the records of the Biggs, it was fascinating. Unfortunately, the laptop locked up before we had a chance to view what was on it so we were wondering what there is to see as I forgot to ask you when we were there! If it is a computer copy of the typed notes we saw then fine but if it is something else, would it be possible to visit again, have a look at the laptop and perhaps bring a memory stick to transfer the information to use at home?

We looked at your own copy that wonderful book you showed us and took a couple of pictures of the relevant photos and after a lovely sandwich in The Unicorn we went to see Kathy at her house who said that many of the residents have a copy but sadly there are no spares available for me to buy. We did pop back to the Church on the off chance in case the door was still unlocked to have a further look but, of course, it was safely secured.

Anyway, we were hoping that we could visit again a) to look at the laptop again if relevant and b) if you were willing to make the book available to us again, we could take some more pictures of the photos we did not take before. I would of course love a copy of my own so if you should hear of or come across a spare I would greatly appreciate it! It is not often a direct descendent can look back on such a lot of information and the book would be the icing on the cake.

St.Nicholas Church

Dear friends, It hardly seems possible that it is 50 years since the Six Day War of June 1967.

Having always been interested in the near east and the relationship between Israel and her neighbours Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt in particular I followed the news daily and with great concern. Surely the odds were stacked against the tiny Jewish state, especially as Syria and Iraq piled in as well against it.

However determination and great strategic planning as well as sheer bravado paid off with a clear victory for Israel.

This of course was not the end to the strife in the region and huge enmity still exists in and around the 'Holy Land' as it is called.Sadly many unholy things have occurred on both sides of the ethnic/religious divide and there is no legal recognition of Israel's existence.

Like the 'Troubles' in Ulster this cannot go on forever if wrongs are to be righted whoever committed/ commits them.

Better backs for gardeners!

Spring has finally sprung and the sunshine has sent us into our gardens in droves. Although gardening can be good for the mind, it can play havoc with your body. Follow our tips for better backs and don’t let an injury spoil your fun.

• Before doing any physical exercise, warm up first with a walk and some gentle stretching.

•T ake regular breaks and change position between jobs to avoid tiredness, overuse and injury.

•K eep your back straight when lifting and use your knees, thighs and arms to help. Don’t try to lift too much at one time – particularly those bags of compost!

•W hen digging, avoid twisting and straining and don’t forget to take regular breaks.

• Use kneeler seats or mats when planting and don’t overstretch by working too far in front of you.

• Mow a little at a time, keeping upright.

• Avoid overstretching when pruning by using long-handled shears and use secateurs with a cut and hold action.

• If using electric hedge trimmers don't hold them too far in front of you.

• Consider the planning of your garden – raised flower beds may save you twinges in the long run.

If you have any aches or pains consult a Chartered Physiotherapist for treatment and advice.

Development North Field Update:

The Biggs Pavilion

Following on from the village questionnaire in 2015 and the feedback from last year’s fete, the majority of you expressed a desire to create additional amenity land for the village. These proposals have been presented to the Parish Council who have agreed to utilise the North Field (north of Orchard Ground) for a range of uses.

We have until 2019 to agree the scheme and raise funds.

Charlie Toosey has kindly agreed to chair the North Field Team and is supported by Martyn Walters, Liz Darlington, Pippa Cheetham and many more.

The Team can soon be contacted via email at the following address northfield@orchardground.org.uk - a new website is in the process of being set up and will be the hub for all information going forward.

We also have a Facebook account - https://www.facebook.com/Cublington-north-fieldproject-492959827560249/ We’ll need to talk to Aylesbury Vale District Council about the detail of the proposal but it is intended to include; circular paths, fitness trails, a grassed amphitheatre, new woodland planting, wildflowers and herbs, wildlife habitats, community orchard and a picnic area – the envy of any village!

The North Field Team will be providing regular updates through The Crier and we’ll also be posting on www.cublington.com We’re at the very early stage of this project but if you feel that you have something to offer to the Team, we'd love to hear from you. We’ll be in touch to ask for help whether it’s growing trees or attending fund raising events.

Minutes of Annual Meeting

The minutes of the last meeting held on 10th May 2016 were agreed and signed by the Chairman.

The end of year accounts were discussed and agreed.

3.Chairman’s Report

5. Nominations and selection of Chairman

The Chairman, Hugh Vale, stated that the Parish Council had been through a year of change. Cllrs Yates and Barrowclough had both resigned from the Council after many years of loyal service to the village. The Parish Clerk, Miranda Mercado Gregory, had also resigned at the end of April 2017 after serving for one year and the Parish Council are grateful for her work and enthusiasm.

During the last year, both Julie Merriman and Simon Morgan have become Parish Councillors.

Achievements over the year include the setting up of the Speedwatch Campaign and the preparation of forward budgets by Cllr Bush; the acquisition of funding and installation of village entrance gates

by Cllr Reilly which is now coming to fruition; the WREN grant application for a total refurbishment of the play area by Cllr Merriman with a decision to be given later this month. Cllr Merriman is also looking at installing new litter bins around the village in conjunction with Aylesbury Vale District Council with funding provided by Cllr Glover.

Cllr Morgan is currently investigating suppliers to update some of the old mercury street lights and, alongside Cllr Reilly, is looking at ways of improving the water quality and surrounds of the village pond.

Resurfacing of the High Street took place during the year to a high standard for which we are grateful to Cllr Glover for her support.

The Parish Council would like to take this opportunity to thank all those villagers who

6. Nominations and selection of Vice-Chairman

It was agreed that Councillors would attend any meetings on an ad hoc basis, but Cllr Morgan agreed to represent the Parish Council at future meetings of the Local Area Forum.

The minutes of the last meeting held on 14th March 2017 were agreed by the meeting as an accurate record and duly signed by the Chairman.

3. County and District Councillor Netta Glover Reports:

showing the investment in portable, hidden cameras was worth the investment.

3.1 Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC)

• During the last year BCC has made £71m from its commercial activities.

• Grant from government was around £18m in 2010 but soon there will be no grant at all. AVDC has to find other ways of making or saving money to make up the difference. A vastly improved IT system is having a very positive effect as well as improvements within the Planning Service.

• Building work commenced on new flats, offices and shopping area in Aylesbury known as Waterside North. Expected to be completed by 2019.

• HS2 – the routing arrangements have been announced and it means that traffic will be using A418 from Milton Keynes through Aylesbury with possible 1000 movements per day.

• New local plan will be in force by beginning of next year as long as the general election does not cause more delays.

3.1 Bucks. County Council (BCC)

5 Annual Audit

The annual audit report was reviewed by the meeting and duly signed by the Chairman before onward transmission to the external auditors, Mazars. Cllr Merriman agreed to display the required notice, regarding the end of year accounts, on the village noticeboard for the statutory period.

Social work practice has improved.

• Investment in protecting vulnerable children has risen to £60m last year. More than doubled the size of the First Response team so referrals are dealt with even more swiftly and effectively.

• Families First project recently praised by the Department for Communities and Local Government. Since 2012 over 3000 families have been helped to access the right services and build resilience to deal with their problems.

• Many individual communities around the county have been assisted with local projects via funding from Local Area Forums.

• BCC have made a continued investment in improving the roads. This year a further £15.9m will be spent on surfacing and improvement work across the county.

• The zero tolerance approach has reduced fly tipping across Buckinghamshire by 90%. During 2016 more fly tippers were brought to justice

7 Correspondence 7.1 Emails: There were no emails outstanding

requiring any action by the Parish Council.

7.2 Letter from village resident: A letter had been

received regarding the notice advertising the Cublington Cricket Club at the village crossroads.

It was felt to be inappropriate and possibly dangerous as a distraction to drivers. The meeting discussed the concerns and agreed that the Cricket Club should be approached to discuss the removal of this sign, at least over the winter period and that it should not remain as a permanent fixture. Cllr Reilly agreed to take this matter to the next Cricket Club meeting and ask if the sign could be removed at end of June for this year.

8 Memorial - Valerie Osborn

After some discussion, the meeting agreed that the old seat at the crossroads should be removed and replaced. A plaque would then be placed on the seat in memory of Valerie Osborn. Cllr Reilly agreed to source a suitable high quality seat replacement.

11 Village Matters 11.1 Village Gates: Cllr Reilly informed the

Council that a meeting had been arranged with the Project Manager on Thursday this week to complete a site survey. It is anticipated that the installation of the new gates will take place within the next four weeks.

11.2 Litter Bins: Councillors discussed litter bin options which would meet criteria laid down by Aylesbury Vale District Council, who regularly empty the bins. 12 Parish Clerk Duties/Responsibilities

In the interim period before the new Parish Clerk commences employment in the Autumn, Councillors agreed to assist with duties.

Cllr Merriman agreed to take care of the administrative side and Cllr Vale said he would deal with the financial duties with help from other members as and when required.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place on Tuesday, 11th July 2017 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.
