On June 3rd, as many as fifty members, ex-members, ex Parish Councillors and villagers turned out for a grand celebration to mark the 25th anniversary of the tennis courts being opened in June 1992. The weather gods smiled and a feast of food and drink was laid on by the committee and consumed by guests whilst a feast of tennis entertained the guests.(!)

Vice Chairman Gary Brazier welcomed everyone, including some ex Parish Councillors who had the foresight and wisdom to first set up the facility, and said a few words on behalf of the Tennis Club. Parish Council chairman Hugh Vale then responded with a speech, giving a brief history and complimenting the tennis club on their continued efforts, keeping the courts in excellent order and making the facilities at Orchard Ground the envy of many visiting villagers.

Here's to the next 25 years of continued success for Cublington Tennis Club.

A sum in excess of ÂŁ275 was raised to help replenish clubs funds, depleted after the expense of relaying and repainting the courts, the third time in the twenty five year history.

A huge thank you to all members and guests who contributed so generously to the days proceedings.

Editorial July signals the end of the academic year; students graduating from college and university and younger pupils finishing school.

We wish all of our young people success for their exam results and hope they and their families enjoy a well earned holiday and a pleasant summer.

July also for me signals the start of a different sort of ending as I am soon to be moving out of my lovely cottage on the Nob. I shall be renting it out for a year while I am working as a volunteer in India. I am intending to join a Christian team later in the year to live with them in Muslim community, possibly using my nursing skills.

You may notice that the Crier this edition has a health theme to some of the articles.

Having retired recently after 40yrs service in the NHS I feel it is time to seek new challenges! Retirement frees one to re think how you spend your time and energy and can seriously take you out of your comfort zone whether it be to do a charity sky dive or follow a passion for travel, the arts, sport the choice is endless – just follow your dream.

We, who live in Cublington can appreciate that we often have privileged lives of relative comfort. I am so grateful for the past five and a half years spent in the village. Now is the opportunity to give a little something back into the worldwide community It maybe only a drop in the ocean but each drop adds up.

Lucy Peck reports she just happened to be standing back to back in the Guinness bar at Twickenham with fellow Cublingtonian Duncan Mack!

Has to be more than just 82,000 to one - the capacity there - doesn't it?!

Cublington Fete What a great day (apart from the wind!).

The Cublington Fete, held on a Sunday for the first time, proved to be a great success. The atmosphere was relaxed and many people enjoyed the afternoon sunshine... but perhaps not the gusting wind! Initial reports suggest an increase on the gate, and the most successful Fete since moving lock, stock and barrel to Orchard Ground, so well done all.

Particularly popular attractions were the Fun Dog Show and the fabulous beagle hounds! One or two gazebos went flying due to the gusty wind, but thankfully no serious damage to report... in fact the Pimms tent calmly kept on serving as their gazebo went flying over their heads! The BBQ did a roaring trade, the Cublington produced OSF sausages were particularly tasty! The Traditional Tug of War was great - but perhaps a few more teams need to enter next year?

The police car was also an unexpected hit, especially as children were allowed to turn on the siren... whoop whoop!

The new Fete Committee would like to thank all the loyal band of helpers, stall minders, counters, friends, families, conscripted cohorts and all who willingly gave their time and effort to make the Fete such a wonderful success. Thank you all once again. Lots to learn again for next year and your comments and thoughts would be particularly welcome.

Send them in via the Crier and already, I'm told, we might have a new committee member volunteered!

I personally was amazed that by 6pm, you would never have known the Fete had even been held at Orchard Ground.

Great effort all round and a well earned rest in the evening no doubt.

Initial reports suggest a profit in excess of £3,000 (subject to confirmation!), which is truly excellent news!

Community & Emergency Services Day 2017 NEW VENUE! Saturday 22nd July – 10.30am-5pm Entry £5 per person (kids under 5 go free) Here at Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, we are excited to announce that we will be hosting this year’s Community & Emergency Services Day! Historically held at Waddesdon Manor until last year, this year’s new venue will offer a fabulous day out, with free, unlimited steam train rides included throughout the day!

Join us at The Railway for a fun-filled family day out with all your local Emergency Services, and lots of local charities from the Helen & Douglas House, to the RSPCA and Tiggywinkles.

There’ll be plenty to do and see! Climb in a fire engine; speak to the police; examine an ambulance; learn about many of your local community services; and enjoy steam trains - full size, miniature and model! Not forgetting our museum and visitor centre with café and shop. Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnics. Entry: £5 per person (age 5+).

There is still time to book a stall – if you work/volunteer at a local charity or offer a local service, please let us know – stalls are free.

Sunday 2nd July 10am-12noon - Further dates planned.

•R emember – the OG is your facility – it can be booked for parties, weddings etc. It is a fantastic venue with lots of outdoor space • A new dedicated Orchard Ground website is being built – if you have any information or photos to include, please contact Martyn Waters or Gary Brazier.

• Purchased www.orchardground.org,uk and the OGC will be launching their own new website this summer. This will provide all of the community access to all the great things that go on in our village •N ew Doors have been installed at the Pavilion; a great job done by our Maintenance Office Doug Merrimen • As always, really KEEN to get NEW members to join this committee that runs all the Orchard Ground facilities for the whole community to enjoy. We meet once a month for one and half hours usually on a Thursday evening, so if you are maybe new to the village and want to get involved and meet new people, or you use the Orchard Ground for dog-walking or your children play there, it would be so good if you could support this great facility.

•P lans are progressing to refurbish the kitchen at Orchard Ground.

The kitchen is used by many people catering for village events, and by community and sports groups too. We would welcome your input and ideas for the refurbishment. What needs to be replaced? What equipment is needed? What about the kitchen layout? Have you any contacts in planning or the supply and fitting of non-domestic kitchens?

I wanted to work for Mountain Rescue – inspired by doing hill walking with The Scouts.

Apprentice butcher. I really enjoyed it and stayed for 10 years.

The day was inaugurated in 1988 by the UN Population Fund to mark 11 /7 / 87 when the world's population hit 5 Billion . The world population was estimated to have reached 7,500,000,000 on the 24th April 2017.

The United Nations estimates it will further increase to 11.2 Billion by 2100.

Dear friends, I'm not a subscriber to conspiracy theories... I really do believe that Lee Harvey Oswald shot JFK in 1963 and Osama bin Laden was the mastermind behind the 9/11 New York Twin Towers attack in 2001 despite all the bizarre, not to say ludicrous, theories to the contrary.

However I do feel there is a bit of anti-Christian bias to some of the reporting on two of our political leaders at present. I mean Tim Farron, the now ex-leader of the Liberal Democrats, and Theresa May our Prime Minister. Both are practising Christians and have been vilified in various ways over the past few months in very unpleasant and small-minded ways.

I thought we live in an open and democratic society but obviously we don't if we don't

subscribe to the current extreme secular liberal norms of much of our media and cynical 'establishment'.

The trouble is that it is always so much easier to make cheap jibes and indulge in personal mockery than it is to engage in sensible and respectful dialogue.

Whatever our personal beliefs we need to pray for our Government in the very difficult tasks that it has ahead of it both at home, in Europe and the wider world and also for a quiet Summer in the cities.

Put your best foot forward It doesn’t matter how old you are - everyone benefits from good foot care.

Cracked heels are caused by dry skin, prolonged standing or mal-alignment of the foot or walking pattern. Use a pumice stone to reduce the hard skin and apply a suitable foot cream. Avoid wearing thin-soled or open-backed shoes and choose a good shock absorbing sole.

Corns are thickening of the skin usually on top of the toe, the sole or between the toes caused by pressure of the shoe. These may be swollen and painful to direct pressure. Often caused by ill-fitting shoes, you should avoid tight shoes and hosiery. Use a pumice stone to remove excess skin and moisturise with a good foot cream. Don’t use corn plasters as these can destroy healthy skin.

Sweaty and smelly feet can be caused by hormonal changes such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and being on your feet all day. Wear cotton socks and rotate your shoe usage. Wash and dry your feet carefully every day. Surgical spirit or witch hazel between the toes may help.

Blisters are painful, fluid-filled lesions, often caused by friction and pressure from ill-fitting footwear and

socks and excessive moisture between the foot and the sock. To help prevent them: •

Wear comfortable, good-fitting footwear.

• Choose moisture wicking socks that are the right size - specialist dual layer socks can be useful for walkers and runners and change your socks daily.

• Keep your toenails trim and regularly check your feet for signs of rubbing. If you have a blister, do not pop it - cover with a breathable plaster.

15th July St Swithun's Day St Swithin was an Anglo Saxon priest born C 800 and died on 2nd July 862.

He became the Bishop of Winchester and is the patron saint of the cathedral.

During his life time he was famed for miracles he performed and he requested to be buried outside the cathedral wall where passers by could walk over his grave and the raindrops from the church roof fall upon his grave.

There sprung up many myths surrounding his miraculous works and associated weather lore.

News from Buckinghamshire County Council

HELP US PLAN FOR TOMORROW'S LORRY TRAFFIC Residents and businesses are being invited to help plan how to handle tomorrow's rail and road freight in Buckinghamshire.

Heavy lorries make up between 10% and 20% of traffic on main routes through the county, and with a steady increase in freight forecast over the next decade, County Council transport planners want to prepare for the future.

They’re asking people to help them identify local problem areas, explore untapped opportunities, and pinpoint solutions. A ten-minute online snapshot survey will run for the next fortnight at www.buckscc.gov.uk/freight to allow residents and businesses to feed into their thinking. The results will inform a draft strategy for full consultation later in the year.

Paul Irwin, Deputy Cabinet Member for Transport said his team needs to chart how things have changed with the way freight is transported, as Buckinghamshire has developed in the past decade, and prepare a blueprint for freight for the future.

He said nearly a quarter of what comes into the county by lorry is what residents eat and drink. As the county grows, so will the volume of that essential goods traffic.

“Shopping on line has really taken off over the past decade and now accounts for 14% of what we buy,” said Paul. “In the next three or four years, that’s forecast to grow to around 22%, which will add to the number of delivery lorries driving around the county.

“We’re working with residents and businesses on this critical question now so they have an early opportunity to influence the development of a new strategy that will make freight work for Buckinghamshire without imposing inappropriate costs on them or our unique environment. We want to keep Buckinghamshire thriving and attractive.”

Horticultural Show 2017

Domestic Category

LIME ICED COURGETTE CAKE Serves 8 – 10 Ingredients

Butter – for greasing 2 – 3 small courgettes (250g approx.)

2 large eggs 125ml vegetable oil 150g caster sugar 225g self raising flour ½ tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt Zest of ½ unwaxed lime

Icing

100g full-fat cream cheese 250g icing sugar Zest and juice of remaining half of unwaxed lime sufficient to make a smooth icing 30g pistachio nuts

Method 1. Pre-heat oven to 180oC/160oC fan/gas No 4 then grease and line a 20cm loosebottomed, deep cake tin with baking parchment 2. Grate the courgettes coarsely (no need to peel them) 3. Put eggs, oil and sugar in a bowl then beat by hand until creamy. Fold in the flour, baking powder and salt. Stir in the courgette and the zest. The mixture does look unusual at this stage, but bear with it as it completely transforms when baked.

4. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 35 – 40 minutes, until golden on top and firm to touch or a skewer inserted comes out clean. Remove from oven and leave until completely cool in the tin before removing and decorating.

5. To make the icing, beat the cream cheese, icing sugar and lime juice together until smooth. Spread on top of the cake.

6. Chop the pistachios and sprinkle them over the cake, then top with the remaining lime zest.

St Nicholas’ Church plans to host a Display and Armistice Flower Festival, based on the Great War, but extended to include village memorabilia from the 100 years and (possibly) personal memories from villagers (and families, world wide?)

The ‘Guerrilla Crochet, knitting and craft’ group are producing poppies, to make garlands for the trees in the churchyard, along the High Street. If we have enough, the crossroad trees are targets, too!

Other poppy-themed crafts are welcome, so that we can involve as many of our community as possible.

All ideas and enthusiasm welcome. The Craft group meets (at least) twice a month.
