After a 50 year break (at school making some unrecognisable clay objects for Mum) I thought I would throw (no pun) my hand in and make some ceramics. I do my ceramic work at Queens Park in Aylesbury, which has some fantastic facilities’ (if you’re thinking of doing some) but since March I have not been able to make anything, but hope to get back soon. Playing with, shaping and forming mud into functional and/or decorative objects really is a basic instinct in all of us. You must have made mud pies or sand castles – remember how you enjoyed it. Trying a new medium has been quite liberating as I am not trying to be good, but just trying to enjoy it. You can see from the selection of work that I am trying all sorts; throwing; slab and coil building; pots; animals; glazing and raku decorating. Here is a selection of the work I have done over the last year.

Black & white Raku

I hope you enjoy looking at them.

Editorial

As a child I went for my summer holidays to stay down by the river at Cookham , at the other end of the county. It was a very Swallows and Amazons type of stay , with very little intervention of the 20th century or home comforts. We would arrive the day after school broke up, and then return home at the start of September. When I had a family of my own, we repeated the formula, with only a minimum of improvement on the home comfort level. There was, and still is no TV, no internet, only one room for all the family and various invited guests, no proper beds, and a very basic galley kitchen, furnished in WW2. We all loved it , despite the occasional very heavy downpour, but in true Ratty style we messed about in boats, flew kites, played rounders , walked for miles, swan in the river, ( now fashionably called ‘wild swimming’!), and lived for the most part outside. We barbcued every evening, and picnicked whenever we could. Hard boiled eggs being obligatory of course. The thing is, around the time of the August bank holiday I would suddenly get homesick and tire of the whole business. As the evenings darkened and the autumnal chill suggested itself, I felt I could not stand the thought of another piece of grilled meat or Ottelenghi ( I had to look this up -Ed) salad. With the same enthusiasm with which I had embraced the beginning of the al fresco dining season, and the chilled rosé, I now longed for slow cooked suppers from the Aga, and a full flavoured red. We would pack the whole place up and return home to prepare for the start of the new academic year. Name tags would be stitched on to new uniform, new pens and bags bought and the house would take on an air of excitement at the thought of the return to school. It was as if at what is effectively the twilight of the year, we suddenly face the prospect of a new start. Of course school is a long way behind me now, and also for my children , but the feeling of September being the chance for a new start , so deep into the calendar year has never left me. I relish the chance to finally give up on trying to keep the summer pots going, to start lighting the fires , to cook comfort food and wear jumpers again. Out come the warm hats and gloves , and away goes the panama. Yes we may even get an ‘Indian Summer, but I still feel that we have past into the season of ‘ mist and mellow fruitfulness’, and all that suggests. Walking in the early morning in the autumn actually beats any other time of the year for the sheer beauty of the countryside. We have the heavy crop of the orchards to enjoy and root vegetables and brassicas to cook into delicious suppers. One of the most agreeable factors of living in the UK is that we really do enjoy four seasons in the year. Each in turn delivers its own splendour and as September opens, I look forward to the autumn. Lucy Peck

The Crier online...

We keep getting great feedback from many villagers about the Crier - especially the colour sections featuring the art by the ‘Artists of Cublington”. We shall continue publishing in colour as much as we can afford. But, just for your interest, did you know each Crier costs about £1 each to produce when we print a colour section, and about 85p each when we just print in black and white! We make enough annually from the advertising pages we sell to make the publication viable and to support other village ventures and facilities. However, if you feel like helping us further by donating a small amount annually, it might mean we can always publish the front section in colour every month!

Amazing The amazing Gwyneira Waters has made over 715 masks and has raised over £3000 in total doing so. Friends of St Nicholas has so far benefitted by over £679. What a brilliant achievement! Thank you! You are a star Gwyneira!

The front cover picture this month comes courtesy of Lucy’s sister Isabella who recently visited the village. Additional suitably autumnal colour applied by Gary.

After setting up a free book exchange outside her house, Meigan develops a friendship with a mysterious and unusual visitor who leaves strange gifts, and makes special requests for new books. What is Fifi going to do next. We went to a marvellous party, with Nunu Nana and Nell, we went as we were and stayed as we were which was hell. Fifi, thats me, June Barrowclough, wearing the cobweb hat and feeling dashing went to a party for a yummy mummy living in Stoke Newington. Fifi had been to yummy mummy’s house once before when she had slowly subsided on a ratty tatty chair to the great amusement of others and amazement of herself. This time Fifi picked a solid no nonsense, no trick chair and was accosted by a tweety pie who said “there’s a cobweb on your hat” Complete discomfort of fat party. Worse was to come after a good nosh and copious Guinness Fifi needed the loo before being driven home by the person from Peterborough and his lovely wife from Peterborough Buzzard. I suffer from claustrophobia and got in a panic when I couldn’t open the door, usually I ask Bally Sally to stand outside the loo door when I’m in the Biggs Pavillion - what do you mean too much information, where was I? Oh yes, yummy mummy knew the loo lock was dodgy and was hovering outside and hearing my agitation let me out. I’ve had enough of this, on to some good stuff about me. In April in the shutup I grew 4 tomato plants from supermarket tomatoes. In a fit of the blues I rang my friend Zandra from Norfolk and Chance and demanded she tell me line by line what she was growing in her garden. As I hadn’t been able to get out to buy my usual tomato plants I asked this garden guru if tomatoes could be grown from supermarket tomatoes and was told yes and exactly how to dry the seeds out then plant which is what I did and here we are. I got carried away in this planting from seeds from something and found an aubergine hanging off a plant I had bought from Courgette Bob and Courgette Bobette at last years fete so they were dried out and yo yo ho ho I have one aubergine plant too. Thats enough for now bye bye.

1.What did you want to be when you grew up? A nurse. 2.What was your first job? Babysitting. 3. Who (alive or dead) would you like to have dinner with and why? (You can have more than one!) Cleopatra. Generally, I find her to be a very interesting character. But specifically, unlike her Ptolemaic predecessors, she could speak multiple languages, so could hopefully help me brush up on a few. Also, it would be interesting to learn whether her relationships with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony were purely political moves or whether they did end up having more depth to them. 4. What historical era would you like to have lived in and why? The 50s, ideally without the social injustices (but beggars can’t be choosers), due to the music and dress sense. 5. Where would you want to live if not where you live now and why? Somewhere in Italy due to the language, food, history, and culture. 6. What is the temptation you wish you could resist? I don’t have one. 7. What is your favourite book and why? The Good Women of China by Xue Xinran. It is a raw and eye-opening collection of accounts of women in China from different generations. I found it really interesting especially reading it from a western perspective. 8. What is your favourite song and why? Summertime by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. The genre of the song reminds me of spending time with the family. Additionally, my mum used to play the song on the saxophone and sing it to me as a lullaby when I was a child. It’s safe to say that the song evokes some fond memories. 9. What is the pet hate that makes your hackles rise? Noisy eaters. 10. What is the unlikely interest that engages your curiosity? 20th century authoritarian leaders and their states.

Answer somewhere in the Crier.

11. How long have you lived in Cublington? 20 years.

Eve’s Pudding

A reminder of a childhood favourite, still actually rather good and very easy. Add a handful of bramble/blackberries from the hedgerows around the village currently heavy with crop. Serves 4 1lb Bramley apples 3oz light brown or muscovado sugar 1 tsp either ground cloves or ground cinnamon. 5oz unsalted softened butter 4oz castor sugar 2 whole eggs Grated zest of 1 lemon 4oz plain flour sifted along with 1 tsp baking powder A dot of milk

1 Preheat oven to 180 degrees C/ 350 degrees F/ Gas Mark 4. Grease pie dish. 2 Peel, core and thinly slice apples. Put into a heavy based pan with a tablespoon or two of water and soften over a low heat. I put a butter paper on to sweat the apples , which works very well. 3 As they begin to soften and ‘fall’, stir in the chosen spice, 1 oz of the softened butter and a handful or two of the blackberries if using. Put the fruit into the bottom of the greased dish. 4 Cream the butter and sugar till light and fluffy, then beat in eggs one at a time. Add the zest and then carefully fold in the sifted flour and baking agent. Add a little milk to achieve a nice dropping consistency with the sponge mixture. Spread carefully over the apples, and bake for 40 to 45 minutes. Serve hot with cream, custard or ice cream. Yum!

The councillors expressed their views on the planning application and unanimously agreed to object to the application. It was accepted a development would take place on the site but it was hoped the existing building could be retained and any development would be in keeping with the rural setting. Cllr Vale had spoken to Historic England which had not been asked to comment on the development by Bucks Council. Historic England will come out and prepare a report to send to the planners. The local MP, Mr Greg Smith, had been contacted via local resident Mr Mike Lee, and Mr Smith will keep track of the application. We agreed to target zero carbon emissions by 2050. UK is responsible for 1% of emissions. We ran into some technical issues which is not surprising given that there were nearly 200 people taking part but we got there – it was a long slog. Community Boards We had our first meeting last week and agreed our terms of reference and objectives. Minutes are available on line. The creation of 16 Community Boards will make sure our new council connects with groups, organisations and local people in communities across the county to improve our local areas. With the chairmen and coordinators for each board now appointed, throughout July the boards are holding introductory meetings to start this conversation. Thank you to those of you who have attended the meetings that have already taken place, which have been very positive and enthusiastic so far. Over the next few weeks lots of people, groups and organisations in the community will be contacted about getting involved in the boards and helping to identify key themes ahead of the official launch of Community Boards in September. Family Support Services We are working towards restarting some targeted support services. Can’t give a date but information is available on line. Adult learning – back in the classroom We are now able to resume safe faceto -face teaching of our adult learning courses, following strict COVID-19 guidance. Adult learning courses have been taking place online for the last few months but with social distancing in place, course venues are opening their doors again. We have a broad programme of more than 1,500 courses and workshops all being delivered online and from multiple locations across the county. You can find out more at www.adultlearningbc.ac.uk. Highways Lots of innovative things going on. When roads are closed during road works we sometimes experience problems with drivers just lifting the barriers and driving over freshly finished work which then has to be re-done. Another problem is where a long stretch of road is being worked on cars can find themselves face to face with nowhere to go.Working collaboratively with Eurovia Specialist Surfacing, we trialed ‘Intelicones’ the world’s first smart safety cone. ‘Intelicones’ were used to alert the workforce of any traffic entering onto the site through a road closure. The workforce is alerted by flashing red cones if a vehicle enters the site without authority. If an emergency vehicle enters the closure, the beacons flash blue. On long road closures, such as the Wendover Bypass, a gateman is positioned at either end of the closure and will trigger the cones to flash. On shorter sites if a cone is disturbed by a motorist entering the work zone, amber lights are activated. Award winning winter driving online workshop TfB was successful in winning the Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation award for this online winter training workshop. The workshop is free and takes just 10 minutes to complete. After years of delivering the winter driver workshop sessions at locations across Buckinghamshire, the online workshop tool was created in order to increase the number of people receiving this potentially life-saving training.

Within weeks of its launch the e-module has been taken over 1000 times this is a 700% increase on the number of people who had attended the workshops previously. The Network Safety Team presents ‘Safe Drive, Stay Alive’ show aimed at young people. The programme is well received by those who take part and they tell us that it has directly affected how they would drive in future. Data Collection using Artificial Intelligence A project to collect road condition data on the network via a smart phone camera system is being developed by Ringway Jacobs who do our roads for us. The data will be processed and converted to industry standard visual inspection data. 7. A letter was sent to the Parish Council by a resident concerning this development. The resident had objected to the application and wanted to present their points to the PC. The meeting was sympathetic to the views made and suggested the resident should send the letter to the planning officer. The PC will comment to the planning officer that the development was beyond its expectations. 10. Village Matters Agenda item 7.1 Traffic Calming: Quiet Lanes In progress . Option 1 A from the feasibility report prepared by Transport for Bucks In progress with LAF. Horse signs: A member of the public had contacted the PC to ask that it looks at having traffic signs warning road users of horse riders. The meeting asked the clerk to obtain costings for signs, but it was felt that this was not a priority expenditure. Speed watch signs and mobile signs were discussed, and in view of the costs deferred. The Speed watch equipment could not be used at the moment due to the restrictions of Covid 19. Cllr Morgan to circulate the quote for ‘This is a speed watch area’ signs. Agenda item 7.2 Street Lighting: The clerk had circulated a quote transferring electricity supplier from E-On to SWALEC on a three year contract saving £280pa based upon current usage. It was agreed to transfer supplier. Agenda item 7.3 HGV Traffic. Following the appalling experience of HGV traffic from the recycling unit at Lockharts Farm it was agreed at the last meeting to : 1. Contact the Police to report the incident of gloves being thrown into your garden, the reckless driving of recycling vehicles, using mobile whilst driving, weight limits and speeding through the village – reported to Police on 14th May .

Acknowledgement received from Thames Police reference CDS58996-20-4300-000. There has been no further contact from Thames Police 2. Contact the HGV officer at Buckinghamshire Council to obtain advice on how to best address the issues - Cllr Morgan contacted BC and BC response was a) The speeding trucks, like any other vehicle type, is a police matter and should be reported as such b) You refer to a new waste site, is this who you believe the increased truck numbers are servicing? If you are able to provide details, I will look up their operator’s licence – c) It will be useful to capture more details regarding numbers, timings and identifying livery of the HGVs. Have a look at the Freight Toolkit located in this link, it will help you manage local resources to conduct a survey https://www.buckscc.gov.uk/services/transport-and-roads/ policies/limits-androuting-for-heavy-goods-vehicles/ Points a) and b) had already been addressed. Point c) is a recommendation to carry out a traffic survey, which we would haveto complete. 3. Contact the Enforcement Office at Buckinghamshire Council informing them conditions relating to planning permission 08/20007/AWD on the recycling site has been contravened. Reported to BC . The enforcement office confirmed on 17th July that an officer attended the site today and discussed our concerns regarding vehicle movements. There is concern that the current intensity of the site is above that set out within the relevant permission, however he will need to conduct a full inspection to substantiate the alleged breach . Wing Parish Council is conducting a traffic survey to check the movements into the recycling units at Cublington and Dunton and asked if we would assist them. It is hoped we can assist them. Agenda item 7.4 PubHub : It has been decided by the Cublington Volunteer Group to close the virtual shop as it had served its purpose. The PC was grateful for the support given to the village by the Unicorn and asked that a letter of thanks is sent. Agenda item 7.5 Playground and maintenance The playground is now open and notices about the use of it had been sent to every household in the village and posted on its entrance gates. The annual review of the state of the equipment

had been carried out by a third party . The review highlighted areas of maintenance and the clerk was asked to obtain quotes for the work and to enquire into available maintenance contracts. Agenda item 7.6 MP Visit Mr Mike Lee (who is a member of the Conservative Party) has brokered a visit to Cublington by Mr Greg Smith MP. The idea would be perhaps a town hall style open air session at the Orchard Ground allowing residents to ask questions on any issues affecting the Cublington community. The clerk was asked contact Mr Smith’s office to explore dates and timings subject to Covid 19 Agenda item 7.7 Dog Waste A member of public had contacted the PC highlighting the issue of dog waste in the fields surrounding the village. It was agreed to put a statement in the Crier setting out the issue. It was agreed to look at the cost of a new dog waste bin to be located at the end of alley way opposite Ridings Way. Agenda item 7.8 Litter Bins The locks on the bins are broken and the manufacturer of the bins do not have replacement locks. New bins are required . The clerk had contacted Bucks Council to inform them that the bins were two years old, and replacements should be at their cost due to the negligence of their contractors collecting the waste. Agenda item 7.9 Orchard Ground Security There had been reports of travellers occupying recreation grounds in Bucks. The ground is being locked at 20.00hrs and opened at 7.00hrs . Resignation Cllr Merriman notified the meeting she was resigning. The Chairman thanked Cllr Merriman for all her hard work over many years as councillor and clerk especially the work carried out securing a 99 year lease on the playground and obtaining the grants for the new equipment. Her duty to the PC has been second to none. The clerk was asked to put an advert in the Crier for a replacement councillor. The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place on Tuesday 15th September 2020 at 7.30pm venue to be advised. The Annual General Meeting will be held when appropriate .

The Kitchen in September

I am a real advocate of ‘ put Christmas back into December’, however there are a couple of exceptions to this. September is the time to make your own mincemeat, make the Christmas cake, and if anyone still does, to make the plum pudding. September is the month to have a proper audit of the freezer. Be brave and ruthless. If in doubt, chuck it out. Once there is some space, you can start doubling up when you make stews , soups and casseroles for using over the Christmas period so that you are not permanently stuck in the kitchen. Collect sloes from the hedgerows and start the sloe gin. Place in a bag in the newly tidy freezer overnight to save the trouble of pricking each one.

Wit & Wisdom... “The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubt while the stupid people are full of confidence” Charles Bukowski quoted in the Independent

LOCKDOWN TECH-NECK Lockdown has seen more of us working from home and embracing our new ways to stay in touch, such as using Zoom and facetime calls. Whether it is Teams for meetings or even just checking your phone, longer periods of time at a desk often in a forward head posture, will take their toll and “tech neck” is the phrase used for problems associated with this posture. Your head usually weighs about 12 lbs, but if it moves forward, the increased force that is generated could lead to your head weighing up to 30lbs! Imagine carrying 2 shopping bags, one with 12lbs of food and one with 30lbs, then bend your elbows - that is a lot of difference in muscle power! We are designed to move, not sit at a desk all day. Set an alarm on your phone to get up every half an hour or so and move. Take a longer break every few hours and do some neck stretches but don’t create any pain or pins/needles/numbness (if this happens see your GP/Physio.) Ensure that the height of your desk and chair is correct to minimise bending your head forwards. Have your forearm supported when using a mouse, ideally at a 90° bend at the elbow without any shoulder hitch. If you are back in the office and your work station has not been ergonomically assessed, get this done. Try and stand and sit for some of your work, alternating positions - sit/stand desks are good for this. If you’ve spent more time at a desk than usual over lockdown, and you are running team meetings remotely, check that you are not getting in to chin poke posture. Think about your social/work diary - don’t do a long day in front of the screen and then spend your time catching up with friends in the evening doing the same thing, more sitting and screen time. If you are struggling after trying these tips, then the Physios at St Judes would be pleased to help. Remember, as Joseph Pilates said: “change happens through movement and movement heals”. PARISHIONERS POOCHES, PATHS & POOP A POLITE NOTE TO DOG OWNERS FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL

Dogs are a welcome sight in the countryside but there are a number of issues to be aware of relating to other users, livestock, and clearing up of dog waste. Fortunately the vast majority of dog owners are responsible people who keep their dogs under control and clear up after them. However, it has been brought to the Parish Council’s attention by concerned residents that there is a minority who may not appreciate the problems that can be caused if their dogs are not kept under control, or if canine excrement is not dealt with responsibly. Please control your dog so that it does not scare or disturb farm animals, wildlife or other path users. In general dogs must be kept in sight and under close control and should not be allowed to stray off the path. If you meet farm animals while out walking it is probably best to keep your dog on its lead and leave as much space between your dog and the animals as possible. A loose or out of control dog could cause a pregnant ewe to miscarry or cause a new-born lamb to be separated from and rejected by its mother. It is very important that you clean up after your dog. As well as the visual and social implications of leaving dog waste on the path, there is also serious public health issues associated with dog faeces. In particular dog waste can contain millions of Toxocara eggs: Toxocariasis is highly infections, especially to children, and can lead to serious eye damage and blindness. Dog waste from dewormed dogs also harbours parasites that can harm farm animals such as cows and sheep. It is therefore vitally important that you pick up any dog waste that your dog leaves and either put it in a dog bin or take it home with you and dispose of it in your household waste. For more information on you and your dog in the countryside please visit the Countryside Agency's website at http://www.countrysideaccess.gov.uk

Orchard Ground & North Field News & items of interest

• The Heart of Bucks Foundation has accepted the Orchard Ground expression of interest application for a grant for £2,500 from their Green Communities Fund. Our outline application is for the proposed community orchard and some feature trees to help set out the landscape of North Field. The final part of our grant application will need to be with Heart of Bucks by mid September. This is a ‘matched funding grant’ and Orchard Ground will need to raise £1,000 to which The Heart of Bucks will then add £2,500 if our submission for this final stage is successful. A number of people in the village have spoken to me over the past few months about North Field, saying ‘let me know as we would like to buy a tree’ ‘ or ‘we will donate some money.’ Over the past few village fetes, Charlie Toosey’s model of North Field, posters and drawing has promoted the idea of Cublington having a community woodland, names and contact details have been collected from those offering to buy trees and/ or give a donation. Recent information about the planning application for North Field has featured in The Crier. It would be fantastic to raise the £1,000 needed from the already many offers of support, and from others too. If you would like to make a donation towards this grant application, or buy a trees, please contact Martyn.Waters@icloud.com or by phone/ text to 07973754356. Donations can be made in confidence if you so wish. I have been previously amazed at the generosity of people in the village. If donations at this stage exceed the £1,000 needed to support this grant application, additional funds will be held as ‘designated funds for North Field’ in the Orchard Ground bank and accounts. I look forward to hearing from you. Martyn Waters, Orchard Ground •T he Cricket Club continues to cut and maintain the grass areas of Orchard Ground in spite of the fact their competitive season has been wiped out. Friendly games are now taking place. Our thanks to them for keeping up the mowing of communal areas. The cricket nets are open on a booking system basis. Junior Training has recommenced on a Sunday morning. • The tennis courts are also now fully open. See also ad and guidelines elsewhere.

•T he Tennis Club has restarted league tennis, with several matches from last winter season to complete A new winter season is scheduled to start in October..

•M artyn Waters reports about the latest grants OGA has received a grant from Buckinghamshire Council of £10,000. OG will have a major shortfall in it’s income for this year, as in past years a donation of £1,000 has been forthcoming from the village fete (cancelled) and the quiz night (cancelled) at the end of March would have raised approx £1,000 net, when we take into account the cash bar takings and the list of those who had bought tickets! A barn dance was also planned for later in the summer, together with loss of income from club rents and bookings.

•A Sport England Grant of £1,940 will go some way towards the utilities, running costs, maintenance etc. for the period March to end July but this current situation of social distancing and restrictions on the size of gatherings is not likely to end soon. •1 00 Club 2020/21 Restarting - see ad elsewhere. Everyone who has already got a ticket will not miss out. Sellers will be knocking on your door shortly to sell the remaining tickets using socially distanced procedures. Meanwhile, if you would like to buy a ticket and support the developments at Orchard Ground and the new North Field, tickets are priced £12 for 10 draws with (last year) £140 in prizes every draw. Most years this raises over £1500 for OG funds and has been a valuable source of funds from the beginning. This year will be different with a reduced prize fund available based on fewer sales. Please email Bob to reserve your ticket should you not wish to buy at the door. See ad elsewhere for more details.

•Y our OG Committee currently is: Colin Antosiewicz, Chairman; Liz Smith, Treasurer; Vanessa Verity, Secretary; Jason Taylor, Maintenance; Bob Paine, Bookings & Allotments; Michael Reilly, Cricket & Parish Council; Gary Brazier, Tennis & General; Martyn Waters, North Field; Pippa Cheetham North Field; Miranda Gregory, Events; Lucy Peck, General New committee members always wanted. Please volunteer to help on this committee if you can spare the odd hour or two every month. Minutes of AGM available on Cublington.com • The committee met recently via zoom.

The Vales on farming At the risk of constantly repeating ourselves, becoming boring and, well let's face it, smug, weren't we lucky to have all these lovely fields around to meander as and when we desired during lockdown? Gary and I have always had dogs since we first moved here 26 years ago and have felt blessed to have so many walks on our doorstep and it was lovely to see so many 'new' walkers during our 16 weeks incarceration. We thoroughly enjoy the changes each season brings, constantly commenting on the colours, smells and patterns each field and season brings, although a warm wet winter is rather challenging to say the least slipping and sliding up and down some of those muddy tracks and I admit I've ended up on my knees on more than one occasion! Hugh, Honor and George Vale have always been so kind, patient and informative whenever we've cornered them with our numerous questions regarding their farming life, why for instance is that patch bare? Why have the wild borders increased? How is leaving the EU affecting them etc, etc and I wondered if anyone else would be interested in finding out a little more about our surrounding farmed countryside. So once again I cornered Hugh and George (Honor escaped, Hugh tried and failed!) and held them hostage until they very kindly and with complete grace agreed to provide a small monthly section in the Crier for a complete farming year probably beginning sometime in the Autumn. Clearly this will vary in size each month depending on their workload, but I hope you find it as interesting as I know I will and if you have any pressing questions for them please let me know and I'll pass them on. Gill

Donations of food towards the Winslow Food Bank would be very welcome. They need tinned meat and tuna, tinned vegetables and fruit, pasta sauces, breakfast cereals, biscuits, tea and coffee, soap, shower gel and toilet rolls. Sadly, this year, we shall not be having our Auction or Supper, an important fundraiser for the church. If anyone would be able to donate to the church, please contact Sally Missen. Donations can be made directly into the church account, saving Sally from trips to the bank!

Church Update - September From Howard Robson, the new Rector Hello Everyone, What odd weather we’ve been having and it looks to continue in this unsettled way. And what a complete contrast to our settling in here in our benefice of eight parishes; we feel right at home and I’m very much enjoying learning the routes between the “eight”. When myself, Andrew (Team Vicar) and Annie (Lay Minister) toured the Group on July 19th and had a short service in each church, I said that it is our intention to work across all the villages. I also said to the good number of folk who came that if there’s something you feel you’d like to see happen between church and community please let one of us know. In twenty years of ministry I’ve always taken the view that conversations, meeting people and generally being visible is “A Good Thing” – I had a couple of very enjoyable conversations with five Cublington residents recently when trying to locate an address in the village. To reiterate though, the request remains; please get in touch if only to say hello. With every blessing, Howard 01296 688593. If you would like your names added to our church email list, we will forward information about online services and links. Please also ‘like’ the St Nicholas page on Facebook, again to get information and service updates.

Church Services September

Sad to report that perhaps one the oldest trees in the village, a 300 year old walnut between 20 and 22 Ridings Way, inexplicably fell down during the early morning of the 14th August, narrowly missings cars and

Walking in September

The walk is around the stunning village of Whiteleaf, which must surely be among the so called ‘hidden villages of the Chilterns’ . The landscape is varied with woodland, steep climbs, open vistas, and achingly pretty cottages. There is a pub at the finish and no farm animals to deter dog walkers. Parking in the village is limited, but there are a couple of areas where it is possible to park without upsetting the locals. Distance : 3 miles Postcode of the pub : HP27 0LL 1. Facing the pub , go left down the road . Pass Holloway road on the left, and then after 60 yards further , take the bridleway signposted on the right, just before Thorns Close. As you start uphill you will pass between a thatched cottage, Up The Lane , on the left and Piper Loft to the right. Keep straight up the hill and ignore first branch off to right. When you reach a notice for Whiteleaf Reservoir, and a junction of paths with a metal gate, turn right and start the steep climb to the summit of Whiteleaf Hill. Watch out here for a bench near the top for a breather, and turn right there to a pedestrian gate slightly hidden a

following the torrential rains in August - the road to Wing became almost impassable with many areas flooded again. Surely the council and farmers should do something about the run off from fields onto the road?! It’s just plain dangerous!

Spotted -

On the subject of Wing Road, has anyone noticed the increase in the number of massive lorries turning into the waste transfer centre? I certainly have, and I don’t drive down there that often! See PC minutes.

few yards off. Then turn left and out on to the ridge. 2. Walk through the open area , past Whiteleaf Cross, and then through the wide gate in front of you. Ignore minor paths to your left and right. Continue forward through the early plantings of a woodland but just 170 yards on, turn half left (120o) Marked Bridleway in blue. 3. Keep ahead, ignoring paths off to your left, and keeping the hedge and field to your right. Eventually you will reach a Y junction. Go left to follow the path downhill. The path is marked with a horseshoe with a line through it. At the bottom, by a metal gate , turn right onto a wider path .After a few yards, turn left on to a wide bridle path and after a few yards more, turn right up a very small incline. After a few more feet, turn hard left and continue on down the hill. The path undulates a little but basically follows a down hill direction all the way to the road. 4. Cross the road to the bridleway opposite and go through a barrier gate on the left. Follow the track for a quarter mile, pass by a stile on the left and a terraced path which should also be ignored. After a few more yards, there is a kissing gate which enters the open hillside and a nature reserve. Grangelands...

Walk continued/...

5. Keep to the right hand side of the reserve with the hedge to your right and walk forwards until you reach a large wooden gate. Pass through the kissing gate to the right of it and then straight ahead through a small field to another gate ahead, then almost immediately a second kissing gate leading left to a wide path through a wild meadow. The path leads you under some trees ahead and on reaching the trees go through first one kissing gate, and then another one ahead to descend the hill through the woods. The path quickly becomes a run of wooden steps leading out on to the road.

6. Cross the road and pass into the golf course. Keeping straight ahead with the hedge to your left, follow the path until about half way to the club house. Here the path turns right ( way marked) to cross the course to a gate in the hedge opposite. Pass through the gate to the cricket club. 7. Pass in front of the pavilion and onto the tarmac driveway. Turn left and fairly soon pass ‘New Place’ on your left. Immediately tun left on to footpath in front of the house and follow as it runs down to join another tarmac driveway. Continue forward until the driveway meets the main road and then turn left back towards the pub

Restaurant Review

There will be many readers who will have been delighted or more possibly relieved when The Unicorn opened for business once again. For most villagers, being able to pop into our own local is a really big draw to living in Cublington. It is without doubt an important part of the mix which makes Cublington a special place to live, a true community. Along with the Church and the clubs of Orchard Ground, we stand apart as a village, and not merely a satellite of Aylesbury. For those starting to venture out, and helping to put the economy back together, a trip to The Unicorn seems a good a place as any to finally eat a meal that someone else has planned, shopped for, cooked and washed up after. The evening we visited was just at the start of the lifting of restrictions. Although the one way system requires some minimal adjustment, it was reassuring to see that the staff and management of the pub had taken the process of safety and protection very seriously. The beaming smiles on the faces of the team really bear witness to how truly delighted, and yes, certainly relieved about returning to work. I have seen on occasion, the odd sunbather sitting on the fire escape during lockdown , enjoying the wonderful weather that we saw in May. But in common with so many others, it is apparent that they value their work now more than they could ever have imagined. There is no service standing against the bar, but all the staff are eager and ready to provide table service . No queueing at the bar, very civilised. The restaurant layout is now more open, as some of the tables have been removed so it is not difficult to observe social distancing. Last month my sister and brother in law visited, and since they were 'shielding’ they stayed outside, and we ate in the garden. There are many more tables outside now. I kicked off our evening with a G and T which is my wont, and in line with the current trend, there is a menu for different gins. I am working my way through. As a curtain raiser to the main event, we shared a dish of succulent squid. I never bother with the sweet chilli relish , or indeed any other sort of sauce, as I like to let the ingredients speak for themselves. The fish was well cooked, fresh and with the proper hint of the seashore. We generally share one portion but opted on this occasion for the main course size with two forks, incidentally one pound cheaper than two starter portions! My main course was a Belly of Pork with fennel and beans, done in the Italian style. The pork was meltingly tender under a crispy crunch of crackling. The portion was generous and I struggled to finish, but that was probably my opening greed with the squid. Andy had the 28 day aged steak which came classically styled with watercress and cherry tomatoes. When I did my training, watercress was synonymous with steak, but not so often nowadays. It certainly works well with the beef. A fresh peppery mouthful , a sweet tomato and a properly hung piece of beef. The ‘baker chips’ served alongside seemed to be cooked in the twice or thrice fried fashion which produces such a tasty result. There is a small selection of deserts, but we rarely indulge, and really couldn’t fit in another thing. On the table next to us, Councillor Riley was enjoying a 31st wedding anniversary dinner with Gina. Gina was enjoying a Chocolate Brownie and icecream which she attested to being good. Finally we retired to the ‘bar’ to share a socially distanced celebratory bottle of bubbles with the Rileys. Both for their long , happy marriage, and for a gentle start to life again .

Martina collects my ironing every Tuesday and returns it on Thursday. Great job, never had any problems. Martina is always reliable, accommodating and cheerful. When my washing machine broke Martina took all the laundry and ironing, a great service, I can not recommend her highly enough. Debbie (Cublington resident)
