13th Cublington Horticultural Show 2017 Thank you to all who took part It was a lovely sunny morning for the 13th Cublington Horticultural show, and a BIG thank you to all who came along with their entries or just to take part in a really fun and social event.

The event raised £1,100 which goes towards keeping our lovely historic church building in a good state and so a MASSIVE Thank You to all who generously sponsored.

Thanks also to the judges and an amazing group of helpers who make it all happen and run smoothly on the day.

Editorial Hi everyone - we can’t let this month’s editorial pass without sparing a thought for all those affected by Hurricane Irma. Many people face uncertainty after their homes and communities have been totally devastated. Our hearts go out to them.

Let’s hope that they can rebuild their lives and look forward to a positive future.

On a happier note, closer to home, congratulations to all those involved in the ever-popular Horticultural Show, the Harvest Supper and the winners of the Tennis Club tournaments.

Sticking with a positive theme, many of you will know that us Darlingtons are a green bunch. We were delighted to learn of the Government initiative to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2040. Of course the press has been filled with a lot of nonsense about how we’ll face blackouts when everyone charges their car.

Let’s remember that 2040 is 23 years away. If you think about what the world was like 23 years ago; the Internet was in its dial-up infancy, only nerds had email addresses and if you wanted to watch TV on-demand you had to drive to Blockbuster! The smartphone, which is pretty much ubiquitous now, was only launched 10 years ago when Apple revealed the first iPhone.

The next 23 years is going to see a massive, positive change in the way we generate and consume energy. First, and most importantly, wind and solar will be the cheapest way to generate electricity in the future. We will see a revolution in the take up of battery storage on a national scale, which will smooth out the delivery of renewables when there's no sun or wind. This year, April 21st was heralded as the first day ever that the National Grid was coal-free since the Industrial Revolution.

Electric cars will help with energy storage because a nationwide fleet of electric cars is battery storage on a huge scale. Charge your car when you need it and give some power back when you don’t. And it’s not just cars going electric; a new company called Wright Electric says it intends to offer electric-powered commercial flights to Paris within 10 years.

The advent of self-driving cars will reduce the number of vehicles per household as many cars sit idle for much of the time. Google Tesla Autopilot or Nissan ProPilot for a glimpse into the future. There is so much positive innovation going on right now, the mind boggles at what the next 23 years will bring. Roads made of solar panels? Quite possibly. Wireless electricity? Quite likely. Man on Mars? Pretty much guaranteed! The future is bright, the future is green :-) Best wishes, The Darlington Family

Orchard Ground News in brief

• Welcome to new committee member Liz Smith, who focus on the Pavilion Interior including the kitchen.

• A deep clean of the pavilion will shortly be taking place now the cricket season has finished.

• New racking will shortly be installed in the storeroom to help keep that area neat and tidy.

• A flagpole, donated by M.Reilly and the cricket club in memory of Niall Mackay will be installed near the pavilion for flying of flags on village days, national events and cricket matches.

• A leaflet for easyfundraising.org.uk will be distributed round the village to encourage residents to sign up to a website, then whenever they shop on-line, funds are automatically raised for Orchard Ground.

• Work continues on building the new Orchard Ground website if anyone has any photographs of any event held at the pavilion or Orchard Ground over the years - specifically the Olympic event last year, and think it might be suitable for publication (high resolution, landscape) and would give permission for its use, please email it to gary@cublingtoncrier.co.uk Thanks • 100 Club draw September has taken place and winners published.

Spooky Halloween facts Halloween’s origins come from a Celtic festival for the dead called ‘Samhain’. Celts believed the ghosts of the dead roamed Earth on this holiday, so people would dress in costumes and leave treats outside their front doors to appease the roaming spirits.

During the pre-Halloween celebration of Samhain, bonfires were lit to ensure the sun would return after the long, hard winter. Often Druids would throw the bones of cattle into the flames and, hence, ‘bone fire’ became ‘bonfire’.

Though witches flying across a full moon is a common sight in horror movies and Halloween decorations, the next full moon on Halloween won’t occur until 2020.

The most recent Halloween full moon was in 2001 and prior to that was in 1955.

Halloween is the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas.

The largest pumpkin ever measured was grown by Norm Craven, who broke the world record in 1993 with a 380kg pumpkin.

In Alabama, it is illegal to dress up as a priest!

Ingredients: 1 onion 500g pumpkin 400g can sweetcorn Low calorie cooking spray 2 tbsp mild curry powder 400g can chopped tomatoes A small handful of fresh coriander 8 tbsp fat free natural yoghurt

Pumpkin Curry!

Don’t throw out all that pumpkin flesh after you’ve been carving pumpkins. Why not try this taste-packed curry? It’s the perfect way to use it up!

Serves: 4 Cook time: Ready in about 25 mins Ready in: Less than 30 mins Serve with boiled rice Suitable for vegetarians

Halloween Wordsearch

Method: Prepare the ingredients, peel, halve thinly slice the onion, cut the pumpkin into bite sized chunks, rinse and drain the sweetcorn Cook the onion in a pan sprayed with low calorie cooking spray for 2-3 mins. Add the pumpkin, curry powder and tomatoes and cook for a further 2-3 mins Stir in 50ml water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer gently for 8-10 mins or until the pumpkin is just tender. Stir in the sweetcorn, remove from the heat and divide between four serving bowls Roughly chop the coriander and scatter over. Drizzle the yoghurt and serve immediately with boiled rice

Show your true colours for the Hospice on 8th October Join the colour chaos for a very deserving local charity at Colour Rush on 8 October at Green Park, Aston Clinton in aid of Florence Nightingale Hospice’s Florrie’s Children’s Team.

It’s a fantastic fun event for the whole family: a 5k circular route which you can run, jog or walk and spread out around the course are five colour stations where the runners get showered with multi-coloured powder!

It's open to the whole family, with a 'Mini-Rush' taking place before the main event for any little ones who want to be part of this spectacular event, but who might not manage the full 5k.

Last year, more than 550 men, women and children became walking rainbows for Florence Nightingale Hospice and raised over £14,000 for the Hospice. This year the Charity is hoping that Colour Rushers will help to raise £25,000.

Anyone registering before 1st September can take advantage of the Early Bird Offer and save up to 20% off entry.

Colour Rush 2017 will take place at Green Park in Aston Clinton at 11am AND 2pm on Sunday 8 October 2017, the final day of Hospice Care Week.

From the Reverend Dear friends, Autumn has hit us pretty early this year, or so it feels.....

I guess it just proves how very different we can be albeit made of the same basic stuff.

But what about the Carribean and Florida!

Sovereign God, the defence of those who trust in you and strength of those who suffer, look with mercy on our affliction and deliver us through our mighty Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen.

What struck me about the tv reports was how basically calm and philosophical the victims of the monumental damage were. Many spoke of their faith in God and His mercy towards them.

Not the first response that would necessarily come to mind in such circumstances I guess.

I was minded to think of Job in the Old Testament who was sorely tested and yet refused to turn away from God no matter how bad the provocation was and it was pretty extreme. So different from some individual's behaviour when the slightest problem can lead to monumental moaning beyond belief!

Better backs in the driving seat Nowadays, many of us spend a great deal of time driving.

A study found that people driving over 25,000 miles a year averaged just over 22 days a year off work with a ‘bad back’.

Here are few tips to improve your posture and help your back when driving: 1. Ensure the controls are within easy reach.

Bring your seat forward so that you can easily reach the pedals without over-stretching, which can cause increased strain.

2. Your backrest should provide adequate support.

The driver’s seat should provide good support to the lower back, both lengthways and sideways. Many cars have a lumbar support which you can adjust. If not, consider purchasing a lumbar roll which can be attached to the backrest by a strap.

3. Ensure the headrest is in a comfortable position.

Comfortably rest your head on the headrest with your neck and shoulder muscles relaxed. Avoid sitting with your chin poking forwards.

4. Take care getting in and out the car.

To avoid twisting, slide your seat backwards. To get out of the car, turn your whole body towards the door, lower your feet to the ground and then stand up. To get in the car, sit on the edge of the seat first and then rotate your whole body into position.

5. Be careful loading or unloading items from your vehicle.

Be careful lifting items in and out of the boot. Minimise stretching and lifting by placing loads nearest to the bumper edge.

6. Keep calm and carry on.

Don’t grip the wheel too tightly - this can increase muscular tension. In a traffic jam, take some deep breaths, lift your shoulders to your ears and then relax. Take regular breaks on long journeys. Get out of the car and have a short walk round and do a few gentle stretches.

Hedgehog Helpers October to early November is hedgehogs' last chance to get nice and fat for their long hibernation until April. Here's how you can help them!

Food Lots of people think hedgehogs like milk and bread, but there are much better things you can give them; such as cat or dog food (wet or dry), unsalted peanuts and dried mealworms.

The Garden Leave out leaf piles, log piles or open compost for hedgehogs to nest in. Always be careful when moving them that you don't disturb any sleeping visitors!

If you have a pond, make sure there's a sloping edge so hedgehogs can climb out.

But did you know, they're actually quite good swimmers!

Make a small hole in your fence for hedgehogs to come through.

Make a hedgehog house! It should have a tunnel entrance, and be made of untreated wood. You can also buy them online.

Minutes of a meeting of Cublington Parish Council held on 12th September 2017 at Village Hall at 7.30pm Present: Cllr H Vale (Chairman) Cllr J Merriman Cllr M Reilly Mr M Joy (observer)

Mr Joy was welcomed to the meeting as he will commence his duties as Parish Clerk from 1st October 2017.

2. Minutes of last meeting

The minutes of the last meeting held on 11th July 2017 were discussed by the meeting and duly signed by the Chairman.

3. Matters Arising 3.1 Removal of Cricket Notice

Although the cricket notice had been removed from the crossroads, there had been some complaints that the vertical posts still in situ were a safety hazard. Cllr Reilly agreed to look into the matter.

3.2 Litter Bins

New litter bins had now been installed around the village.

Thanks were expressed to Doug Merriman for carrying out this work. A complaint had been received about the siting of one of the new bins on the nob. Cllr Reilly volunteered to relocate on the opposite site of the road.

3.3 Memorial – Valerie Osborn

Thanks were expressed to Cllr Reilly and Kerry Sletcher for the installation of the new memorial bench at the crossroads. The old bench and been refurbished and placed in the bus shelter for much needed seating.

3.4 Play Area

Work commenced on the new playground during the first week in September and was on track to be completed later this month. The play area would remain closed to allow the grass to grow through the safety matting. It is anticipated that it will be open in time for the October half term and arrangements were in hand for an official opening to take place on Saturday 28th October 2017 to which all would be welcome.

3.5 Crossroads

Cllr Vale reported that he had been in contact with Transport for Buckinghamshire who stated that they

would not sanction the installation of a visibility mirror at the village crossroads.

Some years ago, work was carried out to consider the installation of a roundabout at the crossroads. Cllr Reilly had put forward a submission to the Local Area Forum to see if they could assist with funding a feasibility study to see whether such a project was still viable.

4. Report - Aylesbury Vale District Council and Buckinghamshire County Council (Cllr Netta Glover – in absence)

• Water - Despite recent rainy period, the water in our aquifers (porous rock where groundwater is stored) and rivers has dropped below average. 60% of water comes from this source. It is important to save water during this time and a useful link is www.affinitywater.co.uk/ savewater.

• Fostering – Desperate need for new foster parents to

look after children in Buckinghamshire so they can stay close to friends and local community. Foster carers can be of any age over 21 years old, homeowners or tenants, employed or unemployed, single or in a relationship.

There is no typical foster carer.

• Fly Tipping – A woman who dumped household waste in a ditch was fined £320 and ordered to pay £648 towards prosecution costs, plus £32 in victim surcharge.

The total was £1000. This highly irresponsible act has left her with a conviction and £1000 to pay.

• Latest Lottery Headline Numbers – 169 approved causes and £76,720 annual funds for good causes. Second birthday celebrations in November when it is hoped that Tony Hadley will host event at The Gateway and a bumper prize draw to further stimulate sales for new and existing players.

5.2 Mr M Joy confirmed his willingness to be a cheque signatory from 1st October 2017.

6. Lakeside Business Units – New Access

The new access referred to in the previous minutes is, in fact, to Lakeside Business Units and not Lakeside Fishery.

The legality of this access has been referred to Aylesbury Vale Planning and it is now on their enforcement list awaiting a decision.

7. Orchard Ground Report & North Field Project Update, incl. CIO status Cllr Reilly informed the meeting of the plans to install a flagpole at Orchard Ground as a memorial to Niall MacKay who was a former president of the Cublington Cricket Club. The Union flag, flag of St George and a customised Cricket Club flag will be flown as appropriate.

8. Planning Application 17/03004/APP

The Bell, 2A Bell Close. Demolition of garage and erection of part single, part two storey side and rear extension The Parish Council had no observations or objections to this application.

9. Village Matters Lying Water, Ridings Way Cllr Merriman agreed to contact Bucks County Council to see where the problem lies and who is responsible for addressing this issue.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place on Tuesday, 14th November 2017 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.

The possibility of the Orchard Ground Committee becoming a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) is being investigated, as this would increase opportunities for applying for funding and grants.

Cublington's ADVENT WINDOWS An Advent Trail of decorated windows, lit up during Advent.

From 1st December, we are planning a trail around the village, where windows, decorated for Christmas, will be lit up for the evening. Each day, an additional window would be lit, so that, by Christmas Eve, the full trail will be complete.

All windows will be visible from the road or path, and can be lit by battery or normal room light (no candles!) to illuminate a decorated window.

This can be as fancy or plain as you wish, and no artistic ability is required...

Notes from a small (Cublington) Parish Council The Equinox has passed and it is time to harvest the fruit and trim the hedgerows. Indeed, we have seen a great deal of grass cutting in the last week as well as some tree cutting around the very dry village pond. There is clearly a need to assess how we can revitalise the pond.

Over the next few months the Parish Council and hopefully some willing volunteers can lend their time to perhaps dredge the pond and explore how we can get water into the pond and retain it there. The Parish Council also have placed a bench into the bus stop. Believe it or not the bench was the rather old and aged bench that was on the crossroads for some years and has been replaced by a new sustainable teak bench dedicated to the memory of Valerie Osborn. No one seems to know when the older bench was placed at the crossroads?

When sanded it turned out to be solid beech, and with several coats of Danish Oil looks rather good in its new

location. Thanks to Kerry Sletcher for helping install both benches.

The next project is a face lift for the Cublington oak sign.

The new playground is taking shape fast, and you will hear about an official opening of this great asset elsewhere in the Crier.

The Parish Council are delighted to welcome Mike Joy as our new Clerk. Mike will bring great experience to that role and we are very pleased to have him on board.

Thank you to those who expressed interest in maintaining a flower bed in front of the Cublington gate signs and also those who have acted to make their gardens "hedgehog friendly". I will be in touch to progress matters in due course.

The autumn chill sets in

Although we had some warmer days over September, the autumn is now definitely here for real, and it feels colder. It's a beautiful time of year, with the trees changing colour. Sometimes it may seem pointless raking, when the wind blows even more leaves onto the lawn, but just think of all the lovely leafmould you can make! It's also time to start preparing for early frosts.

Top 10 jobs this month 1 Divide established rhubarb crowns to create new plants 2 Cut back perennials that have died down 3 Divide herbaceous perennials 4 Move tender plants, including aquatic ones, into a greenhouse or conservatory 5 Plant out spring cabbages 6 Harvest apples, pears, grapes and nuts 7 Prune climbing roses 8 Finish collecting seeds from the garden to sow next year 9 Last chance to mow lawns and trim hedges in mild areas 10 Renovate old lawns or create new grass areas by laying turf

Pruning and training Last chance to trim deciduous hedges to keep them looking tidy over the winter.

Climbing roses should be pruned now if not done last month.

Shrubs normally pruned hard in the spring such as Buddleja davidii, Cornus alba, and Lavatera, can be cut back by half now, to prevent wind rock and to neaten their appearance.

Propagation Take hardwood cuttings of plants such as Rosa, Cotinus, Salix and Forsythia.

Check softwood and semi-ripe cuttings taken earlier in the season. They may need potting on, or selective removal of individual plants that have succumbed to rot (in order to prevent cross-infection).

Berries, fruits and seeds can be gathered from trees and shrubs, once ripe, for immediate sowing. Colutea (bladder senna), Laburnum, Morus (mulberry) and Sorbus (rowan) are all suitable examples.

General maintenance If the weather is dry, keep watering early-flowering shrubs such as camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas, so that flower buds are initiated successfully for blooms next spring. Use recycled or stored rainwater wherever possible.

Check tree ties and stakes before winter gales cause damage.

Place healthy fallen leaves on the compost heap or into separate pens for rotting down into leafmould. Shredding leaves first with a shredder or mower will help them break down quicker.

Pest and disease watch Garden hygiene helps prevent pests and disease being carried over from one year to the next. Rake up and destroy - do not compost - any affected leaves. Diseases such as black spot on roses, leaf blight on quince, and scab on apples and pears can all be partially controlled in this way.

Honey fungus toadstools begin to appear in late September and early October, indicating possible areas of infection. However, there are also many harmless, saprophytic fungi appearing at this time of year, living purely on dead material and pose no threat to garden plants. If the plants look healthy, then there is unlikely to be cause for concern.

Watch out for fungal diseases such as grey mould (Botrytis) or powdery mildew. Although less common on shrubs than on herbaceous plants, they may still cause problems when the weather is conducive.

Cultural controls are more effective than sprays at this time of year. Pruning to increase ventilation, and prompt removal of affected leaves, flowers or fruits is crucial. When pruning, take the opportunity to examine branches for signs of disease. Small cankers, dieback, and rotten, hollow stumps at the centre of old shrub bases, are best removed early on, before they spread.

A growing menace and shrinking horizons!

There is an ever growing menace in the garden that creeps up on us. Before we know it, we are living in the dark and can see no further than the bottom of the garden.

From my house, I could at one time see the hills above Wendover at one side and Dunton from the other.

Now all I see are Leylandii!

Even the sky has got smaller all around. As well as being good neighbours we should all be aware of how our actions, or lack of, can affect the lives of others.

Part 8 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003 applies to:

1) Two or more evergreen trees together constitute a hedge.

2) Hedges over 2m tall 3) Hedges should not affect domestic property.

4) Hedges should not prevent a persons "reasonable enjoyment" of their property.

Not to show a bias towards this particular tree, other evergreens are also included in this act.

My own Leylandii hedge is now over 30 years old, has been trimmed at least once a year. it now stands 11 Metres long and 2 m hioh. It is green and neat and is no trouble to my neighbour.

Can the same be said of yours?

Trees of all types are a miracle of nature's engineering, a thing of beauty but should and can always be used to enhance our lives, not to stress us out!

So look after your trees and hedges, but also be mindful of friends and neighbours too.
