Hello, as those of you who know me, I love animals! I therefore feel most comfortable drawing or painting them! I was introduced to oils at school and have taught myself since then. Here are a few examples of commissions I have done in the past, in oil or pencil. Lucy Clunie

l a i r o t i d E First of all I would like to thank everyone involved with the Cublington Crier for the articles on RAF Wing as I have very much enjoyed learning about the history of the airfield and the heroism of the crews involved. So, I thought that in my editorial I could share my top ten key facts about aircraft from World War II

Top ten best British planes of the Second World War (in no particular order); The Supermarine Spitfire: Not the best, but possibly the most iconic plane of the Second World War. Despite what the name suggests it could not ‘spit fire’ for very long having an ammunition capacity of only 14 seconds of machine gun fire. The Hawker Hurricane: The little known hero of the Battle of Britain having shot down most of the German Luftwaffe’s planes. This could be because it targeted the bombers while the spitfire tackled the fighters, such as the BF 109. While the Spitfire was nicer to fly the Hurricane had more firepower, far more firepower, with 8 machine guns and 4 cannons in its armoury. The Avro Lancaster: Being most famous for the ‘dam buster’ raids of number 617 squadron, the Lancaster could also pack a punch with a payload of 14,000 lbs! It was even regarded by the Germans as ‘ the best night bomber of the war’. The Vickers Wellington: These were long rage medium bombers that where used at the start of the war. Their first flight was on the 15th of June 1936. These planes were even based at RAF Wing in the later years of the war as training planes. They were only used for front line missions at the start of the war as later on the heavy bombers such as the Avro Lancaster and Hadley Page Halifax could perform their roles with more armament. The Short Stirling: The first 4 engine heavy bomber to enter RAF service, it was the Lancaster’s larger cousin. It had a similar payload capacity but was larger than the Lancaster being the largest British aircraft in service of the war time years, 1939-1945, its first fight was the 14th May 1939. The Hawker Tempest: One of Britains best ever planes, it was intended as a replacement for the Hawker Hurricane. There were 3 variants of this; the Hawker Tornado, Hawker Typhoon and then the most successful the Tempest. The Panavia Tornado which was retired in 2019 was named after the WW2 tornado and was then followed by the Eurofighter Typhoon which is still in service. Strangely enough Britain’s new fighter the BAE systems Tempest which is under construction is named after the Hawker Tempest. The Bristol Beufighter: The fighter that possibly saved our coasts. Under the command of Coastal Command it worked in three units on one attack; the ‘flak busters’ (flak was what anti aircraft batteries were nicknamed by pilots) which would knock out the anti aircraft guns followed by planes equipped with rockets which would inflict damage and then the torpedo bombers which would often cripple or sink the enemy ship or U-boat. The Bristol Beaufort: A torpedo bomber that could sink enemy ships with torpedos. These would attack the enemy ship and if they came under fire from fighters the defensive turret could allow it to continue with the mission. Over 1,180 Beaufort’s were built in Britain. The De Havilland Mosquito: When it was built it was one of the fastest planes in the world. Surprisingly it was a bomber! Though later on there were fighter variants that had 4 cannons. It was actually made of wood and cloth which made it very light. On most missions the ratio of targets destroyed to the number of planes lost was in the RAF’s favour. The Bristol Blenheim: The Bristol Blenheim was a light bomber used primarily through the early years of world war 2 but did see action during the whole of the war. It was power by 2 Bristol Mercury radial piston engines. It had a top speed of 267 miles per hour and a range of 1,460 mph. These are the best planes in my opinion and I hope this was informative and enjoyable.

Cublington Crier

Keeping you up to date on village life, news and events since 1984

The monthly magazine of the Buckinghamshire village of Cublington - the village that moved.

Need anything? Dog walking? Shopping? Collecting medicines? Help is at hand. The village support network is still there if anyone needs any help of whatever, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We will keep going until it is deemed safe to stop. The mass vaccination programme is continuing apace and record numbers are continually being vaccinated. News is that the next tiers - even those in their 30’s are being invited shortly. So far, despite the Indian variant scares, the pathway out of lockdown Boris announced is going smoothly so far and whilst we all want it to be over more quickly, as I’m writing this there are less than 30 more days until all social distancing measures are lifted. Nearly there! Hooray! Can we remind you to keep looking at the www.cublington.com website for up to date information about Covid and other items of general interest from Bucks Council and the Parish Council. In these unusual times, we urge you to please use the Crier as a forum and interact with it. Write a letter to someone or everyone, write a poem or an article. We love getting your spotteds, your letters, photos, articles and ideas, so please keep them coming. We are particularly in need of WHO AM I? volunteers. It’s simple and just a bit of fun.

Stay safe and most of all, use your common sense!

Does anyone actually read the Crier? Suprising, I know, but I wonder sometimes! Having exhausted my contacts, I am struggling to fill regular contributions like Who Am I? despite repeated pleas for people to put pen to paper. Please, please do it as The Crier can only survive with content. The editorial team really can't be expected to do everything every month. Thank you.

Our theatres and live music venues have, overwhelmingly, remained closed throughout the pandemic and whilst they are now tentatively beginning to reopen their doors, it will be some time before the UK’s world leading arts sector returns to the thriving industry it once was. Hospice launches Make a Will Month Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity’s Make A Will Month’ is back for 2021, with more local solicitors supporting the initiative, so you can now make or update your will and support local hospice care at the same time. Throughout June, BWK Solictors in Aylesbury and Spratt Endicottt Solicitors in Buckingham are offering Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity supporters the opportunity to write a new Will, or update a current Will, at no charge. Instead, people will be encouraged to make a donation to the Charity in lieu of the usual charges – all the solicitors are donating their time and advice to the Charity for free. A Will may just be a few sides of paper – but it enables you to say what happens to everything that you own after you have died. If your children are under 18, it can also ensure that they are properly cared for. Without a legal Will, your wishes are unprotected and the law decides how your money, possessions and property are divided. If your personal circumstances have changed recently through, for example, a birth, marriage, divorce or death then you should review any current Will. Having a Will can also reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax payable on your estate. It’s a tricky subject as no one likes to think about their own death but time spent now making a Will keeps you in control of your assets and makes the administration around your death much quicker and easier for your relatives or executors during what could be a difficult time for them. There are a limited number of appointments available, so please do make contact now to secure your June meeting date. Find out how to make your appointment at fnhospice.org.uk/make-a-will-month Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity needs to raise over £1,000,000 a year to provide specialist palliative care services which are accessible and free of charge to those with a life-limiting illness and their families in Buckinghamshire.

MICROWAVE GOING SPARE If it can be of any use to anyone in the village, individuals or groups, we have a microwave going spare. Happy to give this to a good home. It is in good working order. andyinthevale@gmail.com

The Vales on farming in the Vale #8 May May has been a challenging month. I got my wish and the rain has done a wonderful job of getting all the crops growing but I do not mind if it stops now as the topsoil is getting as saturated as it was over the winter! We also had a period of about ten days where everything broke down, ruptured or failed in some way. After a lot of time and money most of the equipment has been repaired and is useable again. In the fields we have finished applying fertiliser to all the crops. We have applied a fungicide to the winter wheat and barley crops due to the wet and windy weather. Rain splash is a major cause of the spread of fungal plant pathogens from leaf to leaf of a growing plant and between plants. As the rain droplets hit the leaf it helps release the fungal spores and catapult them towards other leaves and plants. The wind has a similar affect. We have finished erecting the concrete panels in the grain silo and now need to seal the joins and bird proof the gaps. We continue to load lorries with last years harvest and have started cleaning the stores as we empty them in preparation for this year’s harvest. The fourteenth of May also saw the arrival of seven heifers and a steer to graze the site of the old village. They have settled down in their new home and seem friendly so far. Stay safe

From the Rector

One of the big plusses about coming out of lockdown is that we can meet up again! Fantastic. But what if you have restricted mobility or are housebound? Not really much change, save for more visitors. This is where the benefice wide (meaning all eight of our parishes) Prayer Sheet steps in. This initiative simply invites those who are tied to the indoors to take part in the prayer life of the church; to pray for our communities, our schools, church life both general and particular, plus prayers for ourselves. It will be delivered either online or a paper copy and will be written each month by Lay Minister Annie, Rev’d Andrew or myself. I pioneered this idea when I was at Vicar School and on placement in a sprawling post-war housing estate in Sunderland. I then took it to my first two posts after ordination, both in rural areas. In one village, it was credited with reinvigorating the church – which was very humbling. Prayer works then. What we need is to know who would like to take part and also, who would be willing to distribute two of three paper prayer sheets each month. With safeguarding in mind, distributors would need a DBS which we would organise. And for clarity, anybody can have the prayer sheet if they wish. On a related note, if you or someone you know would like to chat to Annie, Rev’d Andrew or myself, please get in touch. Our contact details are in the magazines. Both Andrew and myself are new here and with lockdown, have been unable to be visible as we would have liked. Revd Howard Robson

URGENT NOTICE!

We thought it had gone awfully quiet! Not so... Urgent action required. Bucks County Planning Portal contains yet another application for the Lockharts waste plant on Wing Airfield.

https://publicaccess.buckscc.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?keyVal=QR5A09DS04N00&activeTab=summary

A local resident comments: “Bulk Transfer have put in another planning application. It does not mention lorry numbers but includes a sound barrier wall, netting and a water sprayer. These items are intended to reduce sound from crushers and a screener, the lorries will then be required in vast numbers. We need everyone who objected to these huge lorries recently to object in a similar manner otherwise the lorry numbers could return or even be increased, why else would Bulk Transfer need the wall ”

SPOTTED!

PLEASE keep your eyes peeled ... If you spot

anything, and we really do mean anything of interest (silly or serious or even just slightly interesting) in the village - please let us know.

Spotted - Wild life in my garden over the last

month... red kite, barn owl, bats, swallows or swifts, a deer, pheasant, squirrel (digging up his nuts from my lawn) even a newt - in the outside dog water bowl! Can anyone beat that?!

Spotted - A full car park at the Unicorn again. Brilliant.

Correction- Howes Fish & Chip van visits the village at sometime between 1.45 and 2.45pm on a Saturday lunchtime. Listen out for the bell! Stops at Ridings Way, Bell Close and Silver Street .

Spotted - Lost and found - dog and various

residents trying to corner her round the village. Finally reunited with her owners from Dunton.

Spotted - Trees down round OG and the play area... Thank goodness it didn’t fall on anyone... perhaps some remedial tree work required?

Spotted - thanks to farmer Andy Alexander for the

huge improvement at the junction of Cublington Road and Stewkley Road. It looks very much tidier and visibility is improved making it most importantly SAFER.

Spotted -in the night sky in May, a constantly moving line of the Elon Musk Starlink satellites, moving across the sky! Fascinating.

Spotted -new cattle in the Mound Field. Beware.

The Crier & the Wing Aircrew Memorial Official opening postponed. New date tbc. Sadly the planned opening date had to be postponed due to the recent inclement weather which meant the brickwork for the memorial was unable to be completed in time. As I write this, no new date has been agreed but hopefully the delay will mean more people can now attend once restrictions are eased a little further. Watch this space.

The Crier has donated £200 on the village’s behalf to the Wing RAF Aircrew Memorial Fund . Articles regarding the Wing Airfield history will continue to appear in the next few editions of the Cublington Crier. Our thanks to Nick Ellins of the Memorial Fund for providing these. Any questions please ask me and I’ll try and point you in the right direction to the right person. Ed

Dear Resident, Following the end of election restrictions, it is good to be able to write to you personally again with an update on the Covid situation in Buckinghamshire. It’s a particular pleasure as I am able to report that the infection rate in Buckinghamshire is following the national trend downwards and is now at 12.1 per 100,000 residents. This is far lower than it was just a few weeks ago. A tribute to the effects of both the observance of the lockdown but also particularly the high take-up rate locally of the vaccination programme. There are still some causes for caution and I will cover them a little later in this update. On Monday next week (17 May) we can all look forward to further easing of Covid restrictions. You’ll no doubt be aware that the government is satisfied its four tests are continuing to be met and that the roadmap can safely continue. From Monday we’ll be able to eat and drink inside pubs, cafes and restaurants. We can meet others indoors (two households or rule of six), and we can stay overnight in a hotel. Of huge importance to all of us, we can hug loved ones once again, and we can make our own choices on social distancing with close friends and family – this includes everyone, including anyone who’s been shielding. All of these are freedoms we’ve been without and that I’m sure we will never take for granted again. I must underline the importance of doing all of this cautiously. The message is clear; let’s take this next step carefully. Covid hasn’t gone away – people are still catching it and people are still spreading it. There are still rules in place that should be followed, such as the limits on numbers of people who can meet socially, so I ask you to make sure you are familiar with what we can and cannot do from Monday. When considering close contacts, weigh up the risks and stay cautious. Social distancing will still apply in settings like shops and hospitals. Still meet outside where you can and let fresh air in when you’re indoors. Importantly – get tested regularly and have your vaccine when it’s your turn. We have new mobile testing units offering free rapid tests in various locations from this week – you can also visit one of the fixed sites and take test kits home if you prefer. There’s more information about rapid testing on our website and you can also get up to date information on where the mobile testing units are on our social media channels (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram). If you or someone you live with develops symptoms of Covid make sure your household isolates and book a test for anyone with symptoms, either online or by calling 119. Extra testing in Aylesbury A small number of cases of the variant of Covid first identified in India have been found in the Kingsbrook area of Aylesbury. All the people involved have followed the guidance and have self-isolated. However, it’s really important we track this as closely as possible, so Buckinghamshire Council and Public Health England have started targeted testing in the area this week. This is so we can help avoid the spread of this variant and understand whether it is spreading in our community. We are asking everyone who visits, lives or works in the Oakfield Village area of the Kingsbrook estate (postcodes

HP22 7AA to HP22 7BP) to come forward for a PCR test regardless of whether you have symptoms or not. There will be special mobile testing units in the area and we ask as many people as possible to visit them between today (Thursday 13 May) and Saturday 15 May. These test centres will be at four different locations, two in the centre of Aylesbury (Lidl Oakfield Road and Vale Retail Park) and two in Bierton (Aktiva Nursery and ‘The Dog House’ pub). If you cannot attend a test site you can order a kit online; there will also be a team taking test kits door to door on Saturday for anyone who’s not been able to get to a test site themselves. The full details are on specially set up pages on our website. The situation in BuckinghamshireAs I mentioned, the infection rates in Buckinghamshire are now very low with an overall rate of 12.1 and a rate as low as 6.2 in the former Chiltern District area. You can see all the detailed figures on the Covid dashboard on our website. While every death is a terrible loss, the number of people dying from Covid in Bucks is currently very low. Nevertheless, the situation in Kingsbrook reminds us all of the need to stay vigilant. Vaccine news 437,886 vaccinations have now been given in Buckinghamshire. The vaccine is safe and effective and anyone aged 38 or over (or who turns 38 before 1 July) is currently eligible to book their vaccination appointment. You can book your vaccine online via the national booking system or by calling 119 – you can read more via this NHS link. Please remember that while your first dose will offer a good level of protection a few weeks after you’ve had it, you need two doses to further increase your level of protection. It is very important you attend both appointments. Local people are being offered appointments at the Guttman vaccination centre at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, Aylesbury and other large centres in neighbouring counties (which may be closer for some Bucks residents). Community pharmacies continue to offer appointments too. Some GP practices are only offering COVID-19 vaccinations to patients in priority groups 1-9. Anyone not in these groups should book their appointment online using the national booking system when it’s their turn.

People aged 18-39 with no underlying health conditions will receive an alternative vaccine to AstraZeneca (AZ) - either Pfizer or Moderna. This follows the latest advice by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation. For updates and news on all our local vaccination sites, including which vaccines are being offered, visit Buckinghamshire Clinical Commissioning Group’s new local site update webpage. Lastly, a reminder that the vaccination clinic at the Odeon Cinema in Aylesbury has moved just up the road to Buckinghamshire New University, Aylesbury Campus. Anyone who has an appointment for the Odeon site is being contacted, so do make a note of this change if it affects your vaccination booking. #WelcomeBackBucks Many council services that were closed during lockdown are open for business again and it’s brilliant to be welcoming customers back into libraries, leisure centres and other sites across Bucks. For details of opening times and arrangements at your local library check our website. It’s fantastic that Bucks County Museum is opening its doors again next week too. The garden is already open and you can take a look at what’s happening from next week too on their website. I should remind you that of course, Covid measures and social distancing will still be in place at all of these venues so please carry on sticking to the guidance to help keep us all safe.

Car parking I hope as many people as possible are enjoying being able to shop, eat, exercise and enjoy themselves at our local businesses too. We expect even more people to return to our high streets with businesses such as pubs and restaurants being able to serve customers inside from Monday too. I just wanted to remind you that, after having been suspended for a month, parking charges do now apply again in Buckinghamshire Council car parks. We’ve put Covid safety measures in place such as marking out social distancing around ticket machines and there are ticketless and cashless payment options at more of our sites now. Boost your Business We know businesses across Bucks have faced unprecedented challenge this last year. If you’re a business owner then do use our #WelcomeBackBucks hashtag in your social media promotion to reach a bigger audience. We’ve also produced a free ‘Boost your Business’ digital toolkit to help our local businesses get back on their feet, containing poster templates and a marketing guide – so do check it out if you want that extra support and advice. Business grants With businesses able to start trading again, the government support grants scheme we’ve been operating has now closed. I’m delighted to say we’ve been able to pay out more than £140 million during the pandemic to help our local firms to help cover losses caused by the necessary Covid restrictions. Unlike many other councils, we prioritised getting these grants paid so every penny of available help could be passed onto local businesses. Stay safe, stay cautious and enjoy getting more of our freedoms back,

Book Corner Recommendations from Jane Hill (your local librarian!)

A Man and His Cat by Umi Sakurai I don’t read much manga (Japanese comics) but my students at the school library absolutely devour them, so I try to stay curious, and this book was recommended to me by a good friend who thought it might be cheering. It’s a very sweet, gentle story about a widower who chooses to buy the ugliest, most unloved cat in the pet shop. The man and his new, anxious companion go home, and soon form a close bond. As a person who didn’t ‘understand’ cats until one moved into my house and decided to adopt me, I really enjoyed this! There is a wistful, sad tone in parts, because of the cat’s prior loneliness and the man’s grief, but it’s entirely charming.

Exciting New Books! Fighting Fantasy: Crystal of Storms by Rhianna Pratchett (6+ years Fiction) Remember the Choose Your Own Adventure books? They still exist! This series is a revival of the classic ‘you’re the hero’ interactive format, and Crystal of Storms is the newest instalment. A fantastic option for reluctant readers, gamers, and fans of fantasy authors like Rick Riordan.

Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender (8+ years Non-Fiction) A fascinating collection of more than a hundred timelines, covering everything from fashion to pirates! This fascinating reference book tells the story of a diverse range of subjects throughout history in an easily digested graphic format — fantastic for young readers with a natural curiosity about history around the world.

How to Make the World Add Up by Tim Harford (Adult Non-Fiction) I am a big fan of Tim Harford, who specialises in making maths and economics understandable to the layperson (More or Less on Radio 4, The Undercover Economist in the Financial Times, etc.) and this book is based on one of his podcasts, Cautionary Tales, which is just fantastic. It’s all about how we make mistakes when trying to use and understand numbers — misjudging scale, relevance, accuracy, and so on. He’s a clear, entertaining communicator and has much expertise to offer.
