STOP PRESS Tortoise makes bid to break quarantine.

Here we are again; as this is written in May, it is a little difficult to know what might be going on, but assume we are still in some form of restrictive lockdown. June is the first month of summer and is named after the Roman Goddess Juno- she is the Goddess of marriage and it is said to be lucky to marry in June. How very unfortunate for anyone who has booked to marry this June! We would like to echo the sentiments of previous criers; lets all be grateful that we live in such a caring, supportive village. Hats off and a huge thank- you to the Cublington Support Group and all of you who are helping others during this challenging time We thought you might need some light relief, hence the front-page poem and have included some jokes (no prizes for guessing where they came from!). Also, we thought you might enjoy the recipes. It would be easy to dwell on the negatives but perhaps we should turn our thoughts to more liberal times and consider a village celebration; when indeed we can all “meet again”. Fingers crossed that the horticultural show can go ahead in September; looking at the pristine allotments there should be some excellent entries. Stay safe The Justice Family

NEXT COPY DEADLINE

is 15th June

He was kept overnight and returned safely to isolation to complete his quarantine.

STOP PRESS Open Gardens cancelled.

Finally the news we’d been expecting for some weeks now. Cublington Open Gardens has been postponed for 2020.

What have you been doing during lockdown?

June’s Arrived by Holly Justice Cointreau, orange orb rising in the sky Junes here again, sounding out her sigh As if to say; wake up; I’m here For I make the sky so blue and clear. Lichen moss, the blusher in her cheeks On stiles; staining our skin for weeks Honeysuckle, lavender and roses in bloom Giving us the taste of her heady perfume Her song is heard in the hum of the bees And the feathery leaves blowing in the breeze Ripe red strawberries like little hearts glow And the smell of cut grass as the men do mow. The summer fetes and rich cream teas Have our tummies weak at the knees So! smile, enjoy, don’t stay inside Shades on, shorts hitched, June’s arrived.

Reports have reached the desk of the Crier that a tortoise belonging to the Jenkins’s made a break for freedom (Durham perhaps?!) last week, but was apprehended by smart thinking Warden Waters along the Wing Road, by the Walled Gardens.

Please can we ask you to let the Crier know what you’ve been doing during lockdown? We would love to publish letters or articles from villagers. I’ve personally loved the lockdown... my blood pressure is way down and listening to all the different birdsong - so loud!

The Crier online...

Available at www.issuu.com

I also love watching the bats flying round our house at dusk silhouetted against the stunningly beautiful sunsets we’ve been having throughout May. Please send your stories, articles and thoughts to gary@cublingtoncrier.co.uk

SPOTTED!

PLEASE

keep your eyes peeled ... If you spot anything, and we really do mean anything of interest (silly or serious or even just slightly interesting) in the village - please let us know.

Heard - More and more planes and helicopters filling Spotted - A giant heart cut into the grass in the new North Field area, very enterprising. And love the big pathway round for which I understand thanks goes to Hugh Vale for cutting the walkway (and the heart, you old romantic?!!).

the skies, perhaps the silence has been broken now society is awakening from lockdown?

Spotted - A flock of Greylag Geese and goslings nesting in the field next to Wing Dressage Centre.

Spotted - On a walk round Hugh’s fields, I spotted

Spotted - First signs of life at Orchard Ground with

a half eaten (small, so probably young) badger and I wondered what predators do badgers have other than man?

Spotted - A distinct lack of litter on the verges? That was the case but sadly is increasing again as lockdown is eased and people return to work.

I researched and found that foxes won’t take on a badger if they have a choice. They are just too aggressive and tough for a fox to win the fight. Fighting can happen when a badger gets into a fox den and the parents are defending the kits, or when a badger tries to steal the fox’s kill.

the tennis courts and cricket nets being re-opened. Hedges neatly trimmed along the Stewkley Road.

Spotted - the welcome mat at the Biggs Pavilion has had a clean and come up exceptionally well! Not that anyone can see it just yet!

Spotted - A sparrow hawk taking sparrows off a birdfeeder in a garden in Bell Close!

Spotted - The red arrows flying just west of the village on VE Day.

Spotted -

Lovely bunting around the village and celebrations to commemorate 75 years since VE Day on 8th May 2020 see pictures below...

SPOTTED! Scarlet Tiger Moth, usually seen in the South West and Wales, but some populations across South (Berkshire, Kent) and likely to be spreading. One of the few nectardrinking moths, on the wing May/June, daytime as well as night. Caterpillars feed on nettles, brambles etc.... the red hindwings flash as the moth takes off, acts to scare predators... seen at the Ridings Way coffee morning on 25th May

Cublington folk Unusual family predicaments and other goings-on in Cublington due to the lockdown Tim George is still sleeping in his shed and has now raised the brilliant sum of £1805 for Shelter. Brilliant effort Tim! Mike Brazier - Gary’s dad, is isolating with them down Ridings Way and frequently is seen walking round the village and fields... if he looks lost, he probably is - please usher him homeward! Many Cublington folk now meet up on a Wednesday night in the Unicorn garden, waiting socially distanced of course, for their takeaway order. I’m told the pub might extend this if the demand is there. More people to order please... see The Unicorn Facebook page on Sunday for the latest menu offering and order over the phone on the Monday or Tuesday. Zoom drinks are de rigeur it seems with many an hour spent chatting and drinking with friends. Whatever did we do in the old days? BC (Before Covid) - oh I remember. We went to the pub. Let’s hope it’ll soon be open again and we can really enjoy an evening with friends. Michael Reilly has been busy working for a charity foodbank called Fare Share two days a week. See article elsewhere. Martyn Gates has been busy drawing portraits of NHS Heroes... I’ve seen four completed so far excellent - have you ever thought of going on Sky’s Portrait Artist of the Year? Ed

Cublington Cricket Club Cublington Cricket Club have continued to plan for a season with a massive amount of work maintaining the Orchard Ground. Under ECB guidance we now have a single net open for family groups, which can be booked via Tom Gadsby on 07527989639. Strict protocols are in place and must be adhered to. A huge thanks to Tim and James Taylor for their work in grass cutting and general ground enhancement. Also a special thanks to Dennis and Jack Allen for striping down the outfield mower and getting it back on working duty. This was an incredible piece of engineering. Also, for getting the nets operational - big shout out for Tom and Harry Gadsby plus Jack and Harry Gotzheim. We may not see any cricket this year, but we are blessed with great members with a great community spirit. Michael Reilly

The National Theatre has launched a new way for audiences to access its productions online while it is closed. National Theatre At Home offers content including NT Live productions available to watch for free on YouTube, and resources from the National Theatre Collection being made available online to schools and universities. A selection of NT Live productions, recordings of stage shows which have previously be screened in cinemas, will be made available on the National Theatre's YouTube channel from Thursday (2 April). Productions are shown every Thursday at 7pm, and then available for seven days.

At the start of the stay at home phase of the Corona virus Sarah George set us a challenge to write a poem on the subject of Spring’s message of hope. Well it’s been a while in the composition stage, but here are my musings.

Hope Springs Forth Eerie mists of uncertainty hover seeping into our very psyche. Clinging to all it touches, it’s canker cloying and marring Causing a blurring of vision and dampening passions. Thus sucking joy from life’s very marrow. The world appears paralysed, gripped in it’s vice- like hold. A new normality forming, where social distancing is the mantra. Time, once beat the drum of urgency insistent we do it’s bidding. Now time no longer holds sway, as hours merge and drift. Senses once dulled by drudgery frantic activity now rekindled. Nature’s sounds re-emerge to hearten the soul so long parched. Soft mating coo of collared doves, distant ewes calling their young, In the evening hush a hedgehog rustles the litter of fallen leaves. The eye alights on a mossy log, a gossamer web, clouds scudding by. Delicate flowers spilling scent into the languid air Cause me to stoop and admire the rich intricacies of their form. Hope dwells in a willow bud primed to burst forth into pea-green leaf. In this ancient season of rebirth, which is no prisoner to man’s state, Dwells a steadfast confident belief unencumbered by worry or doubt. Spring, creation’s harbinger of unfettered promises heralds a glorious Bright and generous hope amid troubled times like these. Maggie Mackenzie

Volunteers and charities are working together and it’s brilliant Probably like you, I wanted to help people through these difficult times. So, I signed up as a Community Reserve Volunteer (CRV) with the British Red Cross a few weeks ago. And I’ve been pretty busy so far! I stepped forward when British Red Cross asked 1,300 of us CRVs to help FareShare. FareShare distribute surplus food to a wide range of charitable organisations in 1,960 towns and cities across the UK, so you can imagine how vital they are right now for getting food to people who are vulnerable. But the size of the demand is now a real problem. The food comes in from retailers and voluntary donations. It then gets sorted, and checked for sell-by dates and damaged packaging. Then it’s boxed up for the charities that FareShare distributes to, the likes of YMCA, Age UK and other local community-based hubs which need food. As I understood it, FareShare wanted to double the amount of food they usually get to people throughout the coronavirus outbreak, and I knew that any help from the British Red Cross is really appreciated. I’ve been working two days a week in my local town with them, doing the driving and unloading because under social distancing rules we don’t have another person in the van with us. It’s pretty heavy graft. But the work is incredible - we’ve got all sorts of people who have probably never worked in a warehouse setting before, retired people, young people. It’s a proper cross-generational effort for a common purpose. It gives you a bit of a lift to be a part of it, to see it. I hope this gives you a sense of just how brilliant the charity sector is right now. It’s been truly amazing to see everyone coming together, sharing volunteers and putting the people we’re all here to help at the very heart of everything we’re doing. And that includes you... By supporting the British Red Cross, you can help us support people who need our help just now. Better get back to the van, Michael Community Reserve Volunteer

16th Cublington Horticultural Show 2020 Spiced Parsnip Cake recipe Ingredients 340g Tub soft cheese 60g Icing Sugar 1 ½ Lemon zest 180ml Sunflower oil, plus extra for greasing 220g Parsnips (about3) 250g Plain Flour 2 ½tsp Baking powder 2 tsp Mixed spice plus extra for dusting ¼ tsp Salt 3 Eggs 230ml Milk 1 Orange zest & 2 tbsp juice 260g Light soft Brown Sugar 155g Desiccated coconut 100g Raisins

Method 1. First make the icing. Beat the soft cheese in a bowl until soft. Gently fold in the icing sugar, zest of 1 lemon and a pinch of salt. Be careful not to overmix as the cheese will become too soft. Cover and chill. Preheat the oven to 200C, gas mark 6. Grease and line a 23cm loose based, deep round cake tin, then peel and grate the parsnips. 2. In a bowl sift together the flour, baking powder, mixed spice and salt. In another bowl, combine the eggs, milk, orange zest and juice, oil and sugar. Tip in the flour mixture, grated parsnip, desicated coconut and raisins; thoroughly combine. 3. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin, cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and cook for a further 25-35 minutes, until the cake is firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out mostly clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack. When completely cool, spread the chilled icing over the top and dust with a little more mixed spice and the remaining lemon zest.

Orchard Ground News & general items of interest •T he Cricket Club continues to cut and maintain the grass areas of Orchard Ground in spite of the fact their season has been entirely wiped out. Our thanks to them for keeping up the mowing of communal areas. The cricket nets are now open on a booking system basis. See announcement elsewhere. The tennis courts are also now open. See also ad and guidelines elsewhere.

•M artyn Waters has done a brilliant job hunting out potential grants available from Sports England who have recently circulated details of their Community Emergency Fund which will provide small grants of up to £5,000 to local community groups and organisations to help with the impact of Covid-19. This fund helps to cover some of the ongoing costs that groups are having to pay during this current time when income is likely to be reduced during the period 1/03/2020 to 31/07/2020. I’ve submitted a bid for £4,051 for some loss of income from fees/rents and bookings, our continuing expenses for utilities, insurance and maintenance costs. I’ve included some costs that are usually covered by the cricket club: mowing of the cricket pitch, outfield and surrounding areas on a ‘need to do basis.’ •1 00 Club 2020/21 The next round of draws has been postponed indefinitely. If you would like to buy a ticket and support the developments at Orchard Ground and the new North Field, tickets are priced £12 for 10 draws with (last year) £140 in prizes every draw. This raises over £1500 for OG funds and has been a valuable source of funds from the beginning. Please email Bob to reserve your ticket as door to door selling is currently inadvisable. See ad elsewhere for more details. •E asyfundraising - raise funds as you shop online while self isolating!! This has so far raised over £783.69 for Orchard Ground - We now have 36 villagers participating (12 more than a year ago! but surely there’s more of you who buy online?!) - Villagers who buy goods online could raise money for Orchard Ground for doing nothing other than a couple of clicks. We appeal to you to help us boost our numbers. See opposite or please speak to Bob Paine for more information on how to set it up - or see posters in the Biggs Pavilion. •Y our OG Committee currently is: Colin Antosiewicz, Chairman; Liz Smith, Treasurer; Vanessa Verity, Secretary; Jason Taylor, Maintenance; Bob Paine, Bookings & Allotments; Michael Reilly, Cricket & Parish Council; Gary Brazier, Tennis & General; Martyn Waters, North Field; Pippa Cheetham North Field; Miranda Gregory, Events; Lucy Peck, General

New committee members always wanted. Please volunteer to help on this committee if you can spare the odd hour or two every month. Minutes of AGM available on Cublington.com • Date of next meeting: TBA

Cublington Crafters

Our trip to support the crafters in Vaalwater, South Africa has been put on hold, and we hope to visit next year. The Schwe To Go group are supporting their families and education costs, through making and selling handmade crafts, and we were going to help develop new skills and take ideas for designs and marketing. This will happen, just not quite now! In the meantime, the community there is having to cope with Covid19 and SA Lockdown, and with no national income support and we have made donations to 'Acts Of Mercy,' the local charity providing food, fuel and support for families with no current income - No tourists, no jobs, no craft sales. It is winter there too, and we are shortly going to send out a box of knitted and crocheted hats, as gifts to the community.

Church Update June St Nicholas Church, Pentecost ‘Service’ 9am Sunday 31st May live streaming on Facebook St Nicholas page. We are not allowed to use the inside of the church ( I did ask!) but advised that an Outside Broadcast would be fine, so, if all goes to plan, Log In to Facebook and listen to readings, meditations and prayers. We shall list the readings in advance, so people can follow them. Jane and Michael If you would like your names added to our church email list, we will forward information about online services and links. Please also ‘like’ the St Nicholas page on Facebook, again to get information and service updates.

PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE LAMBS

Please could everyone walking their dogs through the field please keep their dogs on leads, We have 13 black lambs in the field, with their mums. The first lamb born, Hyper, sadly lost her mother, but has been adopted by Boo, the Dartmoor, whose lamb was stillborn. She was named by my cousin in Canada, after her dog.

Covid19 and veterinary services.

We are all providing emergency and essential cover for pets, horses and farm animals, while trying to ensure that the risk from the transfer of Covid19 is minimised. PPE has been reserved for the NHS and we have returned oxygen cylinders and loaned other essential equipment to local hospitals. Most practices are developing new ways of working and using phone triage, and the teams within practices have self-isolated themselves, so that they can still work effectively together. It is hard to examine a pet and maintain a 6 foot distance and PPE at a Monthly Pet Health Planfully C19 protective level (if we had access to it) would freak most pets!! Orchard Ground Report/ Charity Status and North Field Orchard Ground : Martyn Waters had applied to Sports England for a grant to cover the loss of income due to Covid 19. He was successful and obtained £1,200. OG has allocated £500 to the cricket club to pay

for the clearance of moss which had got into the field over the abnormally wet winter. Martyn has three other applications in progress on behalf of OG and CPC. The clerk was asked to write a letter of thanks to Martyn for all his work to the community. Charity Status/North Field It was agreed to continue with the planning application as requested by OG/North Field as there was no extra financial commitment to the council. The legal work for a draft lease was left on hold. 6 Planning Permissions 18/04085/APP Lakeside Business Units Formation of new vehicular access onto Reads Lane . The applicant has made an amendment to his plans for an entrance directly onto Wing Road by Reads Lane entrance . This was felt to be a better solution than having the entrance off Reads Lane . There was no objection to the revised plans, but there might be an issue concerning a piped culvert in front of the units which should brought to the attention of the planners. A member of the public had raised a question of whether someone was living in a caravan on the site . This matter will be looked into . 19/04435/ACL -Wing PC – Wing Caravan Site – application for certificate oflawfulness for existing caravan site. No change. 19/04442/PIP - Land Adjacent To The Walnuts The planning officer wanted to make the parish aware that the description for the application has been changed with agreement with the officer and agent. The previous description for the application included of the site comprising of 5 – 6 dwellings. The new description for site aims to have between 1 – 6 dwellings within the site. 7. Village Matters 7.1 Traffic Calming: Quiet Lanes A member of the public had queried the inclusion of Dunton Road within our application for Quiet Lanes as it fell within Stewkley Parish Council. It was agreed we should apply for this status on the Reads Lane and Ridings Way. Option 1 A from the feasibility report prepared by Transport for Bucks LAF has acknowledged our continued interest but stated matters have been delayed to the end of the summer due to Covid 19. Speed watch signs and mobile signs were discussed, and in view of the costs deferred to later in the year. Speed watch could not be used at the moment due to the restrictions of Covid 19 7.2 Street Lighting: nothing to report 7.3 HGV Traffic. The meeting was very sorry to learn about the experience a resident on the Wing Road had concerning traffic travelling through the village. She had contacted the clerk to ask what the council was doing about the HGV traffic because there were a lot more vehicles passing her house which were driven fast and aggressively. These 30 ton lorries were moving hardcore driving from Lockharts Farm going towards Aston Abbotts. One of the lorry drivers had discarded his gloves in her garden . She has reported this incident to Thames Valley Police. She raised the point as to why there was not a road sign by the village hall

warning of ‘School’ as she is very concerned that there will be accident one day. The clerk explained the council have been looking into the HGV traffic relating to the recycling unit at Lockharts Farm, and we were contacting the HGV officer at Bucks Council to discuss our issues and to take advice as to how to proceed with the matter. The vehicles going into Lockharts farm are owned by Bulk Freight Ltd which in turn is owned by Fred Sherwood Group based in Leicestershire. The planning permission allows for 12 movements in and 12 movements out of the site at certain times of the day. The planning application number is 08/20007/AWD. It was agreed at the meeting to do the following : 1. Contact the Police to report the incident of gloves being thrown into your garden, the reckless driving of recycling vehicles, using mobile whilst driving, weight limits and speeding through the village 2. Contact the HGV officer at Buckinghamshire Council to obtain advice on how to best address the issues 3. Post Office services It has been many years since Cublington last had a functioning Post Office and now seems like a good time to bring it back. For those of you who don't know I run an online jewellery business so I am still trying to send out orders on a daily basis from Wingrave Post Office. Visit www.colortjewellery.com to see what we have to offer (Shameless plug). In order to reduce the need of residents having to go to the Post Office I don't mind taking letters , parcels and Online order returns to Wingrave Post Office. But if you need to use the other services offered by the Post Office I can do those on residents behalf too, some may be more tricky than others but I am sure that we can sort something out, I have worked closely with Deva at Wingrave for nearly 5 years now and he is very accommodating and helpful. I also have his phone number in case we have any questions. Wingrave Post Office also has a fully stocked shop too so if any residents require anything from there as well I can pick these up too. Again if residents require anything specific please let me know and I will se what Deva has to offer. Here is how it will work: 1) If a resident has something they would like from the Post Office they can send me a message. If they are not sure on price I can advise them on which service to use and how much it would likely cost. 2) If it requires wrapping I can do this as well as I have extensive stocks of Brown paper, bubble wrap, boxes and tape. 3) They can leave the item on their doorstep for me to pick up. 4) If a resident requires a service I can contact Wingrave to see if they can offer it. 5) I can keep a record of how much I have spent then we can settle up later. 6) I usually go to the Post Office at around 4PM everyday Monday to Friday. I hope that this helps as it felt like a sensible situation to removing the need for more people having to go to the Post Office than is absolutely necessary. Colin Antosiewicz 07952431488

Book Corner

The Public Library Online As a school librarian, I have been working over the past couple of months promoting online resources to my students, including all the amazing things available from public libraries. You can join the library in any county where you live, work, or go to school, and you can join online.

Here’s a brief summary of what’s available from our local library services:

Available from: Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire, Milton Keynes, and others

eBooks Audiobooks

Access a huge collection of books to read on your phone, tablet or computer, including classics, bestsellers, and new releases. Platforms include BorrowBox, OverDrive, and RB Digital. Download audio versions of books to your device for listening at your leisure. Audiobooks are read by skilled voice actors or performed by full casts, and there’s a vast selection to choose from. Platforms for audiobooks are generally the same as those for eBooks.

Newspapers & magazines

Read today’s papers from around the world, browse a top-notch selection of monthly magazines, and collections of historical records. Magazines available include: Countryfile, BBC Good Food, National Geographic, BBC History, BBC Wildlife, Good Housekeeping, Elle, Esquire, Top Gear, and Attitude. Platforms include PressReader, Newsbank, and RB Digital.

Music streaming Digital reference resources

Free options for listening to music at home, including Freegal (loads to choose from, including rock and pop, kids’ songs, world music, country, jazz, metal and more), Medici and Naxos (both focussed on classical music). Public libraries subscribe to lots of fantastic databases, encyclopaedias, dictionaries and more. The majority of these can be accessed from home. Services differ across counties, so check the website for your library to see what they currently have on offer. A few to highlight: Ancestry (for family history research), Encyclopaedia Britannica (great for homework, and differentiated by age group), Theory Test Pro (for learner drivers), COBRA (information for small businesses) and the full collection of Oxford Dictionaries, including The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Happy reading! — Jane Hill

Here’s a few recommendations from me, based on what I’ve been reading lately. I borrowed all of these from Hertfordshire Public Libraries, but they are also either available from Bucks or other nearby services, or you can of course order them online (ideally from The Hive or an independent book shop!) — Jane Hill

Non-Fiction

Fiction for Adults Normal People by Sally Rooney

Prison: A Survival Guide by Carl Cattermole A frank and fascinating account of prison life in the UK. This cult guide has been updated for wider publication, including the perspectives of women and LGBT+ prisoners, and what it’s like for family on the outside. A brilliant read for empathy, understanding, and thoroughly putting you off that life of crime you’ve definitely not been planning...

The multi-award-winning book behind the BBC series . Normal People tells the story of Marianne and Connell, teenagers in Ireland falling in love, in secret, for the first time. An intense, lush novel about coming of age, class, culture and relationships. Definitely a bit of a Marmite read, though! Half my friends adored it, and the other half wanted to throw it at the wall in frustration. Personally, I loved it.

Audiobook

Fiction for Kids

Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett The audio versions of Pratchett’s brilliant novels are read by Stephen Briggs, who does an incredible job bringing the madcap characters and settings to life. Monstrous Regiment is a standalone novel, so you don’t need to be familiar with the whole Discworld series to understand it. The story is about women and war — Polly disguises herself as a man to join the army and find her brother, ending up in a unit with a vampire, troll, zombie, religious fanatic, and two close ‘friends’, led by the legendary Sergeant Jackrum.

Murder Most Unladylike by Robin Stevens This series is popular with KLS students, and is available from Herts libraries as an ebook or audiobook. This is the first title in the series, and a classic-style 1930s boarding school story with a twist—can Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong solve the mysterious murder of their Science teacher, Miss Bell? Can they even prove she’s dead at all, when only Hazel saw the body before the murderer moved it? This is a delightful romp, suitable for Years 5 and up (depending on their squeamishness), but also good fun to read as an adult.
