Editorial Like many of us, when we look for a place to live, we base our decisions on many factors, such as location, price, family, work, etc., and we were no exception to the rule. Having lived in Cublington for two and half years though, I would add another key factor – community.

Yes, it takes time to integrate and yes a little effort is required, but in Cublington, it’s well worth it!

I found this and thought it rather apt – simply called Community Community - somewhere, there are people to whom we can speak without having the words catch in our throats.

Somewhere a circle of hands will open to receive us, eyes will light up as we enter, voices will celebrate with us whenever we come into our own power. Community means strength that joins our strength to do the work that needs to be done, arms to hold us when we falter, a circle of healing, a circle of friends, someplace where we can be free.

As many of you already know, Cublington was to become London’s third airport; the Roskill Commission recommended the extension of Wing Airfield and the plan would have gone ahead resulting in the destruction of 619 buildings and 1674 people would have lost their homes. The plan may have even been accepted except for the voracious opposition from the Wing Airport Resistance Association. WARA proved what belonging to a community really means and what it can do when roused, without this community spirit it is more than likely that there would be no Cublington as it is today, unless you count London Cublington Airport!

Crier Guest Editors THANK YOU to all who have signed up over the last year to take on the editorship of the Crier. There has been a little bit of persuasion needed but I think all who have done it have realised that it is ‘not nearly as bad as we thought’.

What is required is a picture for the front cover of the Crier, a paragraph from the editors and a couple of articles to put in, such as something relevant to that month, a recipe or similar.

Please make sure you make a note of the month you are doing and start thinking about the content in advance. Then just send it by the published deadline and the amazing Gary and Sam do all the rest. We are incredibly lucky that they do because the Crier is such a great asset to the village, keeping us in touch with all that is going on and making us realise what a great community we live in.

Entries are usually made by parish and town councils but entries from village hall committees or other active community groups are also welcome.

The judging takes place in June and the results announced by the middle of July.

Befriending in Buckinghamshire Could you volunteer for our Buckinghamshire Befriending Service to help support people with dementia?

Alzheimer’s Society provides support to people affected by dementia in Buckinghamshire. Sadly however, we know that a number of people in the local community do not receive any support, simply because they do not realise that there is specialist help available to them.

We already have some wonderful volunteers who support people with dementia by helping at our Activity Cafés in Aylesbury and Chesham, our Dementia Cafes in Buckingham and Iver and Singing for the Brain® groups in Aylesbury, Beaconsfield and Buckingham. We are now looking for more people to volunteer their time and get involved in our befriending service.

Our trained befrienders provide companionship and are matched with people depending on their personality and common interests. With the support of befrienders people with dementia are able to continue to do things they love.

Volunteer Befrienders can help a person with dementia in various ways. A Group Befriender may take part in a walking group, gardening, bowling, visiting a garden centre or other activity. A Telephone Befriender may call someone for a chat on a weekly basis or a Befriender may prefer to visit someone in their home for a chat and a cup of tea.

We were absolutely overwhelmed when we were presented with the amazing book of memories of the Naylors. We were very emotional when we read all the lovely comments and will treasure the book. Very special thanks to Emma who had the idea and Helen, who I think was responsible for gathering the contributions.

Also thanks to Trevor for rounding up so many friends for such a fun evening in the Unicorn and of course To Valerie for making the presentation .

Although we are absolutely loving Yorkshire, we really miss Cublington and most of all it’s residents. We have so many happy memories ourselves of the village. Particularly the many fun filled fete weekends and apologies to everyone who had to put up with the Naylor gang’s Karaoke performances at the Unicorn. There is no other village that has such a fantastic community spirit. Sadly we will not be able to make this year’s fete but hopefully will join you in 2016.

Our building works are progressing well up here and we are hoping many of you will come and see us once they are finished. Dear Editor, I write as a former resident of Cublington, now residing in Culmington (!), Shropshire and in the Diocese of Hereford. When I read Byrnette Brown’s enquiry in the April edition of the Crier about her ancestor William Tovey, I contacted a friend who is archivist at Hereford Cathedral (she used to work in Buckinghamshire Record Office). She confirms what I suspected, namely that Prebendary William Tovey held the estate of Cublington in the parish of Madley in Herefordshire. There is still a hamlet in Madley called Cublington and there is still a Prebendary de Cublington – currently the Revd Preb J Davies, who has a stall in Hereford Cathedral. In other words, Prebendary William Tovey had no connection whatsoever with Cublington, Buckinghamshire.

I understand that Rosalind Caird, the Cathedral Archivist, has been in touch with Ms Brown and was able to supply her with some information about her ancestor. As one of the oldest dioceses in England, Hereford has very extensive archives, including an original copy of Magna Carta, the subject of an exhibition in the cathedral library in this, the charter’s 800th anniversary year.

I enjoy reading the Crier each month- it is good to keep in touch with what is happening in the village.

While the Northern hemisphere celebrates in June, people in Australia, South America, and other populations in the Southern hemisphere celebrate their longest day of the summer in December.

Early Celebrations Awed by the great power of the sun, civilizations have for centuries celebrated the first day of summer otherwise known as the Summer Solstice, Midsummer The Celts & Slavs celebrated the first day of summer with dancing & bonfires to help increase the sun’s energy. The Chinese marked the day by honoring Li, the Chinese Goddess of Light.

Perhaps the most enduring modern ties with Summer solstice is the present-day belief of a “lucky” wedding in June which echoes back to an ancient Druids celebration of Summer solstice as the “wedding of Heaven and Earth”.

How Summer solstice is celebrated today Today, the day is still celebrated around the world, most notably in England at Stonehenge, where thousands gather to welcome the sunrise on the Summer solstice.

Throughout Europe, other pagan spirit gatherings or festivals are still common in June, when groups assemble to light a sacred fire, and stay up all night to welcome the dawn.

In the U.S., the city of Santa Barbara in California holds the nation’s most talked-about summer solstice celebrations -- featuring a parade, performance artists, and other entertainment during a festival that lasts a full three days.

Summer Solstice fun facts Pagans called the Midsummer moon the “Honey Moon” for the mead made from fermented honey that was part of wedding ceremonies performed at the Summer solstice.

Ancient Pagans celebrated Midsummer with bonfires when couples would leap through the flames for good luck (in the belief that the higher the jump, the higher your summer crops would grow.)

Midsummer was thought to be a time of magic, when evil spirits were said to appear. To thwart them, Pagans often wore protective garlands of herbs and flowers. One of the most powerful of them was a plant called ‘chase-devil’, known today as St. John’s Wort which is still used by modern herbalists as a mood stabilizer.

Cllr Mike Bush and Cllr Michael Reilly (in his absence) were welcomed to the Parish Council and congratulated on their appointment in the recent election. Cllr Netta Glover was also congratulated on her new appointment as District Councillor for the Wing Ward.

2. Apologies

Apologies were received from Cllr Michael Reilly and Paula Boston, TVP. 3. Reports 3.1 County & District Cllr report:

• Council of the Year Award: won by Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC) out of 200 applicants. Aim is to improve services and reduce costs.

• Three County Initiative: Buckinghamshire County Council (BCC) continues to work with colleagues in Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire to explore the opportunities and potential benefits of a coordinated approach to the strategic planning and delivery. The aim is to explore a way to secure genuine devolution of powers, funding and accountability from Whitehall.

• Broadband: AVDC looking to establish a broadband company to service hard to reach areas in Buckinghamshire which are of little interest to commercial providers. This project has a positive earnings potential.

• Trading Company: AVDC council meeting members approved the establishment of a wholly-

owned company to sell consultancy services to nonpublic bodies. Initially focussing on selling energy and sustainability services to the private sector. This follows recent changes in the law with compliance to the Energy Savings Opportunities Scheme (ESOS) whereby business will require this certification. This is seen as another opportunity for AVDC to generate income.

• University Campus, Aylesbury Vale: If interested, you can sign up for newsletters for school and careers advisers. See website below: http://www.ucav.ac.uk./newsletter-sign-up/ • Old County Hall: BCC refurbishing this building to provide attractive function rooms plus a spa. At night Old County Hall will be floodlit to make the town centre a more attractive place to visit.

• Buckinghamshire Safeguarding Children Board: If anyone has concerns about sexual exploitation in a child or teenager there is help and advice available through a specialist website: www.ruwise2it.co.uk or call 0845 460 0001.

• Road resurfacing: Cllr Glover confirmed that the High Street in Cublington is scheduled for resurfacing by BCC this financial year.

3.2 TVP Police report (received by email): Cublington Crime Statistics for 2014/15:

• Assault on 24.9.14 in Silver Street. Investigated but no further action.

• Theft from van on 27.1.15 in Ridings Way where tools were taken from the rear.

• Theft of chickens and feeders on 6.5.15 from a field at the back of Larkspur House.

• There have been no reported burglaries and the crime rate in Cublington is very favourable compared to other local villages.

• There have been no ASB issues that the Police are aware of.

4. Minutes of last meeting

The minutes of the last meeting held on 10th March 2015 were agreed by the meeting as a true record.

The minutes were then duly signed by the Chairman.

5.Matters Arising

5.1 Old Traveller Site, Wing Road: Planning permission has been refused by AVDC for a static mobile home park. The owners, Wyldecreste Parks, will be appealing against this decision. A date has not yet been fixed for the appeal. The Parish Council will be supporting this development.

5.2 BCC Devolved Services: Horticultural Contract: After due consideration, the Parish Council have decided to retain the services of BCC this year for grass cutting of verges. Other areas in the village that need mowing on a regular basis, such as the play area, will be undertaken by a local contractor.

Some volunteers also mow communal areas around the village for which the Parish Council is extremely grateful.

5.3 Best Kept Village Competition: Judging will take place in early June. The Council ask all residents to make an extra effort to keep their gardens and village tidy.

6. Planning Applications

NO OBJECTION BY PARISH COUNCIL 15/01404/COUAR – CUBLINGTON New Dairy Farm, Stewkley Road PARISH COUNCIL HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT OVER-DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SITE. 7. Accounts 7.1 The following were passed for payment:

internal and external audit. The balance on all accounts held by the Parish Council totalled £8,757 to be carried forward to the next financial year.

7.3 NALC Legal Briefing – transparent obligations

by Parish Councils - this is a new Government requirement for Parish Councils with an annual turnover not exceeding £25k. Cllr Yates agreed to ascertain what is required and how the information can be disseminated for the village website and report back to the next meeting.

8.Correspondence: 8.1 Buckinghamshire Law Plus: A new in-house legal service being provided by Buckinghamshire County Council. See website: www.buckslawplus.co.uk.

8.2 AVDC – The Unicorn, PH, registration as an asset of community value: CAMRA have put forward the

above application on the village pub. The meeting agreed that The Unicorn PH should be registered as an asset of community value.

9. North Field Steering Committee

Cllr Yates reported that responses to a ballot, issued to the village via the Cublington Crier, were now being collected. This gave a choice of either leaving the field as it is in agricultural use or changing the land to a recreational park/woodland at early expiration of the lease in 2019.

If the village chooses a parkland area, then those who voted for this facility will be canvassed to see if they wish to form a project team to formulate a plan for the funding and sustainability of this area. Only if the plan is viable will the Parish Council give their consent to the change of use.

Solicitors working on behalf of the Parish Council to register Orchard Ground and the North Field have advised the clerk that due to a backlog of such applications a response is not expected until July.

10.Play Area Update

Disappointingly, no progress has been made with the making good of the ground after the sewage leak or the sale of this land to the Parish Council by Thames Water. Cllr Vale agreed to look at filling in the sunken area with top soil.

A safety audit is taking place on the playground equipment this month and some urgent action may need to be taken once that report is published.

11. Any other Business 11.1 Dog Nuisance: Mr Arthur Read had been invited to attend the meeting as he has concerns over dog walkers on his land. There has been an increase in dogs worrying livestock and encroaching on land planted with crops. Dogs should be restricted to

the footpaths and preferably kept on a lead unless under control. Diseases that are contactable from dog faeces, to both humans and animals, was also highlighted. The meeting agreed to put an article in the next edition of the Cublington Crier reminding dog owners of their responsibilities. Cllr Bush agreed to organise.

11.2 Retiring Councillors: The meeting agreed that flowers should be purchased for Cllrs Missen and Jenkins to thank them for their service on the Parish Council. Clerk to organise.

4. Chairman’s Report

The Chairman, Hugh Vale, thanked his fellow councillors for all their help and support during the previous year. Cllrs Sally Missen and Gilly Jenkins had decided not to stand for re-election.

Cllr Missen had completed 26 years service in total, holding various positions over those years and the Parish Council was particularly grateful for her assistance in taking over the clerk’s position for six months before a replacement was appointed. Cllr Jenkins had served for one term and the Council was particularly grateful for her contribution to the North Field Steering Group.

Road safety warning to parents about child car seats Officers from Transport for Buckinghamshire and Thames Valley Police were out during Global Road Safety Week advising motorists on the importance of making sure children are safely strapped into the correct car seats.

The team visited Millbrook School and Asda supermarket in High Wycombe during the week (4 – 10 May) to hand out information and offer advice.

During one morning they spoke to 60 parents and carers at the two venues giving out key safety messages on the correct fitting of seatbelts and children’s car seats.

A large number of seats were found to be incorrectly fitted: straps were not secured tightly enough, were twisted, or the child had slipped them off. Not wearing a seatbelt or not using it correctly can be a fatal decision, even on short, familiar journeys and at low speed.

Mike Freestone, Buckinghamshire County Council Director of Transport Services said: ‘The importance of this campaign cannot be emphasised enough, given that every day more than 500 children are killed on the world’s roads and many thousands more are injured.

‘I’m really grateful for the partnership working we have here to spread this vital safety message.’

Mike said there were many free resources available to schools and clubs, and he urged parents and carers to look at these to help keep young people safe on the roads.

Peter Hare, Road Safety Constable for Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes said: ‘I would like to stress that the seat must be appropriate for the age and size of the child. It must be securely fixed with the straps hugging the child, not allowing them to remove their arms from the straps. I would also recommend not wearing thick clothing as this allows them to slip out of the belts and if it is cold, cover them and the seat, rather than wrapping them within the seat. Please take the time to ensure your loved one is securely strapped in their seat, because in a crash that’s the safest place for them to be.’

We received this on the website comment and have asked for more information ( a name! for instance) Hi there, I have been showing my mother your site as she was evacuated to Cublington for 4 years during the war with her sister. She was so delighted looking at the photos as she has always told me what a lovely place it was to live and how different it was from her East End home. She has a great memory and remembers names of villagers, their children and shopkeeper and farmers, most everyone. I will purchase your book to show her. Treating injuries with RICE! With the sun finally shining we are busy enjoying sports and gardening and, with our increased activity levels, accidents can happen. Here is a little reminder of how to treat some common injuries using the RICE principle – Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.

Injuries involving the lower limb are predominantly soft tissues, i.e. ligaments (joining bone to bone), tendons (joining muscle to bone) and muscles themselves.

A strain is the overstretching of muscle and a sprain is the overstretching of a ligament or tendon.

However, the body’s reaction is similar in all structures.

Initially, when an injury happens, inflammation occurs, small blood vessels are damaged and bleed at the injury site, chemicals are released and cause an increase in blood flow – this results in heat, redness and swelling in the area. The pain is caused by chemicals and extra pressure irritating the nerve endings.

The success of an injury healing is boosted by appropriate, timely and effective action in the first 72 hours – so what can you do to help yourself?

Follow the R.I.C.E. principle:• R – REST: This helps to decrease the energy requirement of the area by reducing unnecessary blood flow. So avoid aggravating activities but keep the area moving.

• I – ICE: This initially constricts the blood vessels, so reduces bleeding and decreases swelling. It also helps reduce pain by numbing the nerve endings.

• C – COMPRESSION: This limits the accumulation of inflammatory fluid and the over

production of scar tissue. A Tubigrip bandage could be used and the area should be compressed well above and below the sight of injury.

• E – ELEVATION: This lowers the blood pressure and helps limit the bleeding into tissues. It also encourages excess fluid to drain to the lymphatic system.

Dear all, here goes...

Dear friends, Summer, Sun, birthday, Fathers’ Day ---that’s the up side. Down maybe: exams, preparing to leave or change school?

As a June baby I’ve always felt more at home in this section of the year.It’s somehow more energizing,more hopeful.

But then I know people who feel the same about say October or November. I guess it’s all a state of mind: half full/half empty; can do/can’t do etc etc.

And who knows exactly what predisposes us to be one or the other? It’s like the nature/ nurture debate...what about the third element which is peculiarly ‘us’ and nothing to do with genes or our social environment,poor or rich,law-abiding or criminal.

Belief systems are quite generally under assault in our western world,being replaced by ‘brave new world’ secularism and yet the basic human material doesn’t seem to change with high expectations. To quote the old Beach Boys’ song we still have the heroes and villains all around us and young people in particular have to navigate very difficult waters to lead a decent life: bombarded on all sides by fast moving ideas and images and often not based on a solid base of any sort.

Although not brought up in a Christian home my parents had a very clear code which they lived by and passed to me: it was a very solid nest in which my own faith was able to be nurtured when (in the words of a good friend) I ‘opted for God in Christ’ in whom there is life and love, hope and joy.

To deliberately misquote John Lennon for a moment: ‘Imagine I took Jesus seriously, look at what a world there would be: one in which we wouldn’t need to fight,starve or feel let down or put down’.

Maybe the the feelgood factor could be with us all the time..................
