Editorial Another cover in glorious colour which does full justice to the beautiful picture of dried flowers assembled by Lily Hodgson. A taste of summer we have all been waiting for.

Our barbecue season has not yet got into full swing, we have held one but we ate indoors as there was a cool wind.

Included in this month’s magazine are the Rules of the Barbecue which I am sure all you ladies will be able to identify with.

We had an unexpected visitor to our garden last week - a homing pigeon blown off course and tired and hungry. He promptly rested on our newly acquired and newly varnished garden seat, I think the slatted seat was reminiscent of his coop as he felt quite at home there. He was very curious and interested in us and with an hour or so’s patience David soon had him eating out of his hand.

Back to the garden seat he puffed up and nestled down for a snooze. This is the third homing pigeon to rest in our garden, the other two being in our previous house. The first one we were able to read the identifying number on the leg ring and within a few hours he was collected by the owner’s father who says he travels miles all over the country collecting his son’s birds. The second we again identified and he travelled on by special post to his owner.

This one travelled on independently after a few hours’ rest.

I hope he made it.

Finally we would like to endorse Vanessa and Simon’s comments on living in Cublington. We have just passed our fourth year in the village and we would like to thank the ever increasing number of friends we have made for the warm welcome we have received.

No August Crier

As is tradition, we don’t publish in August - we are taking a well earned break, but you can still help over the Summer months by having a think about offering to take on some of the Crier production roles. If you fancy lending a hand - it doesn’t take much - then please do get in touch. I know there are villagers out there who have time and the skills necessary to perform tasks for this vital village function. Without your help, it is a very onerous task on Sam and I to produce the Crier every month. Roles available include (in all or shared)... to sift through advertising and content sent via email, send out advertiser invoices and chase money as required. Collate information/write the occasional article/chase editors for content/proof read the final content before print/ pick up from Little Horwood printers and distribute to the wonderful deliverers.

If you can help then please contact Sam or Gary or make yourself known to either.

The Committee thanks all residents who participated in the recent ballot; 81% of all households in the Parish wanted their votes to be included in the ballot. The remaining 19% of all households were not seen personally by a Steering Committee member but a note was left with virtually all of these households inviting them to make contact if they wanted their vote to be included.

The Steering Committee is satisfied that all households/individuals in the Parish were given an opportunity to cast their votes.

The results, based on all individuals who voted in the North Field Ballot, are as follows: 40% wanted to leave the field for Agricultural usage 60% wanted a Woodland Amenity to be created in the field This concludes the first stage of this process, please note that these results do not automatically mean that the current rental agreement on the North Field will terminate in September 2019. These results will now be reported to the Parish Council and the next stage of this process will be discussed at the Parish Council meeting on the 14th July 2015.

Thanks all...

...The Cublington Fete Thanks to all who were involved with the village fete this year. This year’s change of venue made for a different day from those we’ve enjoyed at The Old Rectory in the past. The new venue meant we all got to enjoy Orchard Ground looking good and at least the weather kept things consistent giving us the usual downpour! A big thanks to all those who helped out on the day, tending stalls or with support tasks; for those who donated prizes, provided car parking facilities or moved cricket venues; and of course to everyone who came along and enjoyed the afternoon with us all.

With a bigger area available on Orchard Ground this year we had the opportunity to invite the birds of prey, who were a highlight of the event. We also still had favourites from previous years including Smarty Arty and The Adrian Marsh Dancers. We were also able to run for cover into the Pavilion

when the rain came and Smarty Arty was able to complete his last performance with a much larger (although somewhat captive) audience. The Pavilion also allowed the cream teas to indoor serving and dining (to the chagrin of the new BBQ team) and diners were able to enjoy their cream teas in the dry early on in the afternoon. Early on in the year the change of venue was a concern, but feedback on the day was that the fete went well and we have more possibilities for future years.

From a purely logistical point of view the facilities on Orchard Ground were more appropriate and the set up and clean up teams had an easier job.

Details of takings and donations will be announced in The Crier after the summer.

Recipe

Light Chocolate Cake - Gluten Free Ingredients

3 medium eggs 160g caster sugar 200g peeled and grated butternut squash 120g white rice flour 3 tbsp cocoa powder 80g ground almonds 1tsp baking powder 1tsp bicarbonate of soda ¼ tsp salt 125ml buttermilk

For the icing

50g unsalted butter, softened 200g icing sugar, sieved 50g mascarpone 4tsp cocoa powder Small pinch of salt You will need two 18cm – diameter x 5 cm – deep loose bottomed tins

1. Preheat oven to 180 C /350F/Gas mark 4. Line the tins with baking parchment and brush a little vegetable oil over the base and sides.

2. Whisk the eggs and sugar in a large mixing bowl for 4 minutes until pale and fluffy. Beat in the grated butternut squash, followed by the flour, cocoa powder, ground almonds, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt. Add the buttermilk before beating again one last time to make sure all the ingredients are well introduced to one another.

3. Pour the mixture evenly into both tins then place in the centre of the oven for 30 minutes.

4. Once cooked, remove the cakes from the oven, unmould, peel off the baking parchment and leave them to cool down completely on a wire rack.

5. For the icing - Beat the butter with 100g of the sugar in a large mixing bowl until you have a rich paste.

6. Once you reach this stage, beat vigorously for 10 seconds to loosen the butter further. Add the mascarpone, cocoa powder and salt as well as the remaining sugar. Beat once again to combine.

7. Refrigerate the icing for 15 minutes. Beat well with wooden spoon before icing the middle and top of the cold cake.

is an 85 km / 53 mile walking route along the higher ground around the outside of the original Aylesbury Ring to produce a walk with goods views through pleasant countryside and passing through many of our delightful villages and towns.

It can be walked using some of the 23 circular walks which are described in the 14 OAR Section Walk Guides (or over several days by an avid rambler!)

More Ancestry Research from the website...

I know there were Lees living in Cublington around the mid sixteenth century. There were Lees in Hardwick cum Weedon for four hundred years from the mid sixteenth century.

I am trying to connect the Hardwick Lees, my traceable ancestors, to the Cublington Lees via Francis Lee, lesser known son of Sir Robert (1483) and who was brother of Sir Anthony Lee, (1510) MP and Knight of the Shire for Buckingham.

Info on Ancestry.co fades to nothing and the other Ancestry website have no information on Francis.

Only Sir Anthony’s Wikipedia page mentions him.

BTW. The Coat of Arms I have for Sir Robert is a blue horizontal with three black unicorn heads :-) Does the name of the pub have anything to do with this? jamesalee@tiscali.co.uk

Thanks for the contact details for Lesley (Stevens) - I’ll drop her a line and see what happens!

Also big thanks for the scans of the two postcards of Manor Farm. (see opposite). Joseph Biggs (my 2nd cousin 5 times removed) and Thomas Harris (linked to me via his marriage) jointly ran Manor Farm and can be found on the 1881 census (it states the farm was 320 acres and employed 8 men and 2 boys - so an important employer for the size of village) working as a domestic in the house was a 20 year old Mary Kibble who I suggest is a sister or cousin to Joseph Biggs’ wife Martha Biggs nee Kibble. Thomas Harris (who was married to Joseph Biggs sister (another) Martha) is found living at Fern Cottage, Whitchurch Road, Cublington in 1881 so the postcard of the couple standing outside is likely to be Joseph Biggs and wife Martha (so big, big thanks for it). In 1891 the census states that Joseph Biggs was still running the farm (farmer and cattle dealer) but I’m unsure as to whether Thomas Harris was still jointly involved as his wife Martha (nee Biggs) died in 1887 just two years after giving birth to their only daughter Winifred Harris (who is found at a boarding school in Watford in 1901).

Orchard Ground News in brief 1) We need one more member of the committee! - delighted to announce Miranda Gregory has agreed to join the committee.

2) We would urge the community to support our activities which are always advertised in the Crier - to have fun, to raise funds and to participate in village life.

For example Colin organised a wonderful Christmas film matinee (with popcorn!) which deserved better support. It is YOUR Orchard Ground and we would always welcome ideas and help with running events.

Orchard Ground Chairmans Report - June 2015 We have continued with ensuring a financially stable Orchard Ground and have made a number of improvements to the facilities as well as essential maintenance – see Treasurer’s report.

I would like to thank Mike Bush on behalf of the rest of the Committee for providing a thoroughly professional service to us with timely transparent and accurate updates and accounts so that we are always aware of our financial position as well as prompt settling of invoices.

We have engaged a professional firm of cleaners to maintain a continuous programme of cleaning and inspection – thanks to Niall Mackay who as ever has been a vigilant and active stalwart behind the scenes.

Since last year we have welcomed Colin onto the Committee who has already played a valuable role in organising the renovation of the dishwasher and cooker as well as other important maintenance tasks.

I hope that those villagers will consider offering their time to the creation of a sustainable plan which can be submitted to the PC for approval.

With a couple of notable exceptions we have conducted meetings in a timely, co-operative and friendly manner this year and I hope this can continue next year.

Finally Colin’s kids’ Christmas film screening made up for spirit and popcorn what it lacked in numbers – which was in no way down to him. I would like to hope that every member of the committee and indeed all residents of the village can up their game in the year to come in terms of ensuring higher turn-out at such events which take a lot of organisation and are put on for the enjoyment of the village as well as fundraising. We may need Child Catchers next year...!

Treasurer’s Report 

For the purposes of the Treasurer’s Report for the AGM MB reported on the finances of the Association for our financial year ended 31st October 2014.



At the yearend we had cash, net of unpaid commitments and provisions, of £4,983.00. This is slightly less than the £5,204.00 that was estimated. This reduction was due mainly to an extra provision included for a catch up on electricity costs.

BBQ Rules We are about to enter the summer and BBQ season. Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking activity, as it’s the only type of cooking a ‘real’ man will do, probably because there is an element of danger involved.

When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion:

Routine 1. The woman buys the food.

2. The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables and makes the dessert.

3. The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill – beer in hand.

Here comes the important part: 4. THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL.

More routine 5. The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery.

6. The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation.

Important again: 7. THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.

More routine 8. The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces and brings them to the table.

9. After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.

10. Everyone praises the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.

11. Th e man asks the woman how she enjoyed ‘her night off ’. And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there’s no pleasing some women.

Barbecued Bananas

Serves 4

If you wish to offer a dessert after your barbecue this is an oft tried and tested recipe, always popular, which we sampled on a camping holiday about forty years ago and made for us by a Dutch couple.

4 bananas 1 packet of chocolate buttons Double cream, whipped Slit the banana on the inside curve and stuff with chocolate buttons.

Wrap each individually in foil.

Place on the barbecue when you have finished cooking the main course and cook for, say, 15 to 20 minutes. Serve offering the whipped cream.

Cublington Gardens The cars parked along all roads in Cublington were a giveaway that the Cublington Gardens NGS Open Day was held on Sunday 7th June. We would like to apologise to anyone who was inconvenienced in any way. Needless to say we hadn’t expected such an influx of visitors and indeed the day was a record- breaking one for us with 417 visitors raising £2,488.02 for charity. This was up from 178 visitors and £976.20 in 2014.

An incredible success.

The garden owners work hard for several weeks before the day to present their gardens to an NGS standard but on the day can relax and chat with the visitors. Unlike our tea ladies, who didn’t know what had hit them and could barely cope especially given the village hall facilities. Queues ran to outside the hall, extra chairs had to be put on the grass verge and, worst of all, the cake ran out! So a big thank you to Kathy, Sally, Gillian and Julie.

It doesn’t matter how old you are - everyone benefits from good foot care.

Cracked heels are caused by dry skin, prolonged standing or mal-alignment of the foot or walking pattern. Use a pumice stone to reduce the hard skin and apply a suitable foot cream. Avoid wearing thinsoled or open-backed shoes and choose a good shock absorbing sole.

Corns are thickening of the skin usually on top of the toe, the sole or between the toes caused by pressure of the shoe. These may be swollen and painful to direct pressure. Often caused by ill-fitting shoes, you should avoid tight shoes and hosiery. Use a pumice stone to remove excess skin and moisturise with a good foot cream. Don’t use corn plasters as these can destroy healthy skin.

Sweaty and smelly feet can be caused by hormonal changes such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and being on your feet all day. Wear cotton socks and rotate your shoe usage. Wash and dry your feet carefully every day. Surgical spirit or witch hazel between the toes may help.

Blisters are painful, fluid-filled lesions, often caused by friction and pressure from ill-fitting footwear and socks and excessive moisture between the foot and the sock.

To help prevent them: • Wear comfortable, good-fitting footwear.

• Choose moisture wicking socks that are the right size specialist dual layer socks can be useful for walkers and runners and change your socks daily.

• Keep your toenails trim and regularly check your feet for signs of rubbing. If you have a blister, do not pop it - cover with a breathable plaster.
