Crier Comment Dear Villagers Much of the world is coming to a stop as we all self isolate in a bid to halt the spread of the horrible Coronavirus. All of the planned events in the village and the country have had to be cancelled which is a great shame. That I’m afraid, includes the Fete, a real blow in terms of financial support required for several of our village buildings and institutions. Rest assured though normal service will resume - hopefully in about 12 weeks time. In the meantime we will try and keep you informed (maybe only online) as to what’s happening and to help you through in your self isolation. When the time comes we will all have a massive celebration I’m sure.

Peter Clunie

So sad to report the passing of Peter Clunie who died on Thursday 18th after a short illness. Our thoughts go to Lucy at this difficult time.

CORONAVIRUS

The Cublington Support Group has sprung up and all households will have had a leaflet through their door. Many volunteers have come forward so please don’t be shy in asking for help of any kind. be it shopping for essential supplies, posting a letter or parcel, walking a dog if you are unable to... literally anything. Please just get in touch. Several villagers are on the very at risk group, look out for them. Keep Safe. Wash Your Hands frequently. Stay in touch.

Editorial (written before the great lock down was announced)

Fingers crossed, the damaging winds have blown themselves out and the clouds have emptied all their rain, at least for now. The clocks have sprung forward lengthening the daylight hours and there is the buzz of lawnmowers in the air. Luckily, all we are left with the after all the rain is a growing number of deepening potholes. Who has not yet had a puncture on the Wing Road? Never fear, Bucks Highways have the white paint out marking the offending chasms. Undoubtedly, they will now be filled in only to be washed out by the next rain shower. Have you noticed that the Wing Road is getting wider as all the lorries are gradually eroding the verges? Is it not time to ban them on such a narrow road? Aston Abbotts and Wingrave seem to think so as you can see from the signs beside the A418. The writers of the pantomime must be psychic or have a hotline to Bucks Highways since all these roadworks and closures formed a major part of the production. Speaking of roads, Highways England have ‘paused’ the plans for the Oxford to Cambridge Expressway, they say that they will ‘undertake further work on other potential road projects’ between the two university cities instead. This is good news since the planned road could go south of Winslow, cutting a swathe through some delightful countryside quite close to Cublington. Is it not better for the environment to concentrate on completing the East-West rail link? We have deliberately omitted any mention of the coronavirus which has thwarted so many holiday plans, including ours, and emptied the shelves in local supermarkets. Keep washing your hands!! On a brighter note, Easter is on the way with the promise of lots of chocolate. Elsewhere in The Crier there is a competition to design an Easter bonnet for one of our hens (Easter egg for the winner). So, wishing everyone a happy and healthy Easter.

CORONAVIRUS

INFORMATION

Take heed... Stay Safe Also beware of petrol pump handles, self service tills at the shops and ATMs - all high risk areas for cross infection.

Full list of those falling into the extremely vulnerable group: Solid organ transplant recipients People with specific cancers People with cancer who are undergoing active chemotherapy or radical radiotherapy for lung cancer People with cancers of the blood or bone marrow such as leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma who are at any stage of treatment People having immunotherapy or other continuing antibody treatments for cancer People having other targeted cancer treatments which can affect the immune system, such as protein kinase inhibitors or PARP inhibitors. People who have had bone marrow or stem cell transplants in the last 6 months, or who are still taking immunosuppression drugs. People with severe respiratory conditions including all cystic fibrosis, severe asthma and severe COPD People with rare diseases and inborn errors of metabolism that significantly increase the risk of infections (such as SCID, homozygous sickle cell disease) People on immunosuppression therapies sufficient to significantly increase risk of infection Women who are pregnant and who also have significant heart disease, congenital or acquired

The guidance for people at the highest risk is: Strictly avoid contact with someone who is displaying symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19). These symptoms include high temperature and/or new and continuous cough; Do not leave your house for at least 12 weeks starting on Monday 22 March. Do not attend any gatherings. This includes gatherings of friends and families in private spaces e.g. family homes, weddings, parties and religious services. Do not go out for shopping, leisure or travel and, when arranging food or medication deliveries, these should be left at the door to minimise contact. Keep in touch using remote technology such as phone, internet, and social media. Do use telephone or online services to contact your GP practice or other essential services as and when you need.

Major new measures to protect people at highest risk from Coronavirus A raft of new measures, including a helpline for the most in need of support, have been set out for those considered to be extremely vulnerable. Government urges up to 1.5 million people in England who face the highest risk of being hospitalised by the virus to shield themselves and stay at home People with specific underlying health conditions, including some being treated for cancer, will be contacted by the NHS this week Plans also unveiled to deliver groceries and medicines for those most at risk from the virus where needed Up to 1.5 million people in England identified by the NHS as being at higher risk of severe illness if they contract coronavirus should stay at home to protect themselves, the Government urged today (Sunday 22 March). They will receive communication shortly with detailed advice on behalf of their GP practice or specialist on how best to protect themselves. A raft of new measures, including a helpline for the most in need of support, have been set out for those considered to be extremely vulnerable due to their medical conditions, so people know exactly how to care for themselves and others in the coming months. It was also announced that a new Local Support System will make sure those individuals self-isolating at home and who are without a support network of friends and family will receive basic groceries. Community pharmacies will support those who need help getting their medicines delivered. The Government is working with a partnership of the groceries industry, local government, local resilience and emergency partners, and voluntary groups, to ensure that essential items can start to be delivered as soon as possible to those who need it. The people identified as the most vulnerable in their communities will be contacted directly – including in person where necessary - as a priority. Members of the armed forces, already in local communities helping Local Resilience Forums and local councils on their coronavirus response plans, will support this effort and are at the heart of local planning in response to this crisis. Communities Secretary Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP said: “Public safety and making sure that those most at risk from the virus continue to get the support they need throughout this period is the Government’s top priority. People should stay at home, protect our NHS and save lives”. “This will be an especially worrying time for those with serious underlying health conditions and that is why we are urgently acting to ensure extremely vulnerable individuals are taking extra steps to shield themselves, and that the essential items they need are supplied to them. We will ensure that vulnerable and older people in our society are left in no doubt of their importance to us and our determination to protect them as best we can. More people will be required to be by themselves at home. While they are on their own, let’s guarantee that they are never alone.

Orchard Ground While you’re stuck at home... Following the OGC meeting last month it was decided that the committee would like to have artwork representing the groups using the Biggs Pavilion decorating the building. So villagers... this is your chance to show your creativity. While you are all self-isolating, here is something for you to think about. What do you think best represents the following: Cricket club, Tennis Club, Table Tennis Club, Allotments? Maybe even your children can submit drawings and ideas as a project. Please send your ideas and scans? Photos of drawings to me here at the Crier and I’ll make sure they will be considered. Orchard Ground Committee

Anyone fancy doing a Spring Advent Window, to give us all something to look for as we walk around the village in splendid Social Isolation...A rainbow in the corner (another initiative for children) can be included, or not. Whatever you fancy.

PLEASE

SPOTTED! Spotted - The useless editor yet again put the wrong Who Am I answer in the last issue... if you are still intrigued enough to go back and read it... the mystery person was Simon Morgan. I promise to try and do better...

Spotted - A new temporary fence situated down

the end of the fenced alleyway footpath from the Nob, there to protect the young yews from dog pee damage, pinched. Seriously !!! What on earth were you thinking?!! Ed

Spotted - Brilliant new sign on the gate at Orchard

Ground. C’mon dogwalkers... you know what to do. There’s a £500 fine that could be enforced! Please do the right thing and pick it up!

keep your eyes peeled ... If you spot anything, and we really do mean anything of interest (silly or serious or slightly interesting) in the village - please let us know.

Spotted - Just your luck I saw it. Ed!

Young Brian Knights out on his motor scooter on his L plates. Good for you Brian.

Spotted - Several villagers self -isolating on the golf course. Probably a very safe place to be!

Spotted - The lovely barn owls hunting over the old village during the day. Obviously building up strength for the potential new arrivals. No eggs yet in 2020.

Also spotted, Leighton, the Buzzard, who has

started hunting in the field and sitting in the trees at the bottom of our garden! He got counted on the Big Garden BirdWatch, not many can include a buzzard!

Spotted & Thanks to Chris Brandon and

Graham Dunn for helping me putting the five new lights up in the Pavilion (Bob)

Spotted - We spotted Sarah with her basket

gathering flowers from her garden for these lovely Mothering Sunday posies distributed to every home in Cublington. Incredibly generous and hopefully now creating hope in households throughout the village. Thank you to her and her helpers who delivered them.

Spotted - Disgraceful scenes repeated at many local supermarkets. How can people be so selfish in these trying times.?!!

Spotted - A very useful system for making sure

our people are safe. A green piece of card in the window means all OK - A red card in the window - means Help! What a great idea. Well done.

CORONAVIRUS Written by Kate Woods my sister-in-law (a blogger) in Glastonbury. Ed

Virus musings day 5: This virus is all about the lungs. I can feel the pressure, like a baby elephant sitting on my chest. Breathing itself seems to be on the ’to do’ list and the lungs don’t seem to be that fussed about organically filling. It is an effort. Whole sentences are off the table now, as the air is needed for more basic things. I communicate with hand raises, nods and few words. I can now feel the glue-like substance at the bottom of my lungs. So this is what she’s made of, hello Ms.Corona: she’s a sticky, thick, unmoving mass which fills pockets up in the lungs that should have air in. Will enough pockets retain enough air, or not? It’s an interesting place in which to sit. The not knowing. I have highly scarred lungs from pneumonia as a baby and a diagnosed asthmatic, so I’m vulnerable. Recording this pandemic somewhere (might as well be here) feels important to me, to try and make some sense of the landslide that contains our former understanding of life, as it slips away. To attempt to document the passage of time as these ‘panic-buy-to-ghost-town’ days descend. And to attempt to capture this, a birds eye view, while gasping through the glue that is Corona, feels apt. I’m not sitting on the sidelines or dancing in the kitchen at an isolation party. I can’t. But I can write. The deeper medicine which I feel arising through this personal and global experience, seems to be about grief. The lungs have long been associated with grief and Ms.Corona invites, no, demands, us to sit very still indeed (even walking across the room is like scaling a mountain) and try to breathe through the ‘pollution’ deep in the lungs. Like sitting in a forest fire, trying to grab some oxygen. Or a traffic jam. Ironically now and only now, the lungs of the world are beginning to fill, as the skies and the roads, the rivers and the seas clear of our rushing about. Somehow, the tables have entirely turned. The earth takes a nice deep breath and we’re now flapping about, gasping and flailing, like fish on the shore. This is a pivotal moment. It’s not a world war, where we would still have ‘sides’, it is a whole world experience. My prayer/hope, on my personal day 5, is that we might come through this with a new respect for the planet and for one another as a global family, bringing about a new balance. That we might begin to work WITH nature and find, collectively, as a people, ways to harness this bounty without the ‘rape and pillage’ approach. To give as much as we take, globally, country to country and person to person. To prioritise real time with our loved ones, to turn inwards towards our elderly, our children, our communities. To slow the f*** down. But first, we need to grieve. We are being frogmarched by Ms.Corona to the very place within our own bodies which holds all our grief. Can you sit quietly and grieve? She might be coming to your house and then you’ll have to. The speed of our lives, the demand we had put on the planet, ourselves, one another. It wasn’t sustainable was it? And it’s time to grieve it. To acknowledge the landslide. Our collective and individual mistakes. Where we went so utterly and completely wrong. Perhaps before the reinventing of your small business, collating materials to relaunch, perhaps even before you rush into rescuing, slow down. Stop. Be bewildered. Feel the fear, the grief. Be empty. Am I going to survive this? Are you? We don’t know yet. That uncertainty makes us transparent to one another. We are all emotionally naked now and are embarking upon the most unprecedented voyage of several generations, together. One people, trying to simply breathe. (I’m doing deep breathing exercise, taking massive dosCommunities Secretary Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP said:

Answer somewhere in the Crier.

Good Fences Make Good Neighbours After all the winds and rain, now is the time to check on your trees and repair those boundary fences. Trees look great when they are upright and absorb lots of CO2 but are less appealing when they crash down. As Robert Frost says, ‘good fences make good neighbours - so get pruning and trimming.

Church & Covid 19 ALL SERVICES ARE CANCELLED until further notice, but the church will be open for prayer 9 - 10am each Sunday, please ensure social distancing, we will disinfect before and after.

If we find that clergy are unavailable, we shall still have the church open for some form of Open Church prayer, at 9am each Sunday. First Sundays may be lacking on the Breakfasts, and Croissants will be withdrawn for the next few weeks, but the supply of tea and coffee will be kept up . Sunrise service WILL OCCUR on Easter Sunday at 6am, we will have coffee and tea, but no Early Breakfast this year. Location: The Alexander’s Sheep Shed. We hope that we may have lambs by then! Trees: several branches have come down from 2 of the large, ancient Oak trees, north-west of the church. This is due, in part, to the heavy limbs and branches and central decay in the trunks. We hope to arrange for some crown reduction to help preserve these valuable trees and the habitats they support, so that their presence in our village can be retained.

In light of the developing situation regarding the coronavirus outbreak and Government advice on how to respond to it,

we have postponed our planned Midnight Walk from June until 3rd October 2020.

Grateful

It was March 2020 ... The streets were empty, the shops closed, people couldn't get out. But spring did not know, and the flowers began to bloom, the sun shone, the birds sang, the swallows would soon arrive, the sky was blue, the morning arrived early. It was March 2020 ... Young people had to study online, and find occupations at home, people could no longer go shopping, or go to the hairdresser. Soon there would be no more room in hospitals, and people continued to get sick. But spring did not know, the time to go to the garden arrived, the grass greened. It was March 2020 ... People have been put in lockdown. to protect grandparents, families and children. No more meetings or meals, family celebrations. The fear became real and the days were therefore similar. But spring did not know, apples, cherry trees and others bloomed, the leaves grew. People started reading, playing with their families, learning a language, singing on the balcony inviting neighbors to do the same, being supportive and focusing on other values. People realized the importance of health, of suffering, of this world that had stopped, of the economy that has plummeted. But spring didn't know. the flowers gave way to the fruit, the birds made their nest, the swallows had arrived. Then the day of liberation came, people found out on TV, the virus had lost, people took to the streets, sang, cried, kissed their neighbours, without masks or gloves. And that's when summer came, because spring didn't know. He continued to be there despite everything, despite the virus, fear and death. Because spring didn't know, he taught people the power of life. Everything's gonna be fine, stay home, protect yourself, and enjoy life. Read This, spread it by copying/pasting this text, but mainly remain confident and keep smiling!

A message from

Cublington Cricket Club The impact of the Covid 19 virus Following the Government’s latest advice around social distancing, it is with sadness and reluctance that the English Cricket Board, Bucks Cricket Board and the Four Counties Cricket League have suspended all forms of recreational cricket. This extends to training, pre-season friendlies and any associated cricket activities. Whilst this decision will be reviewed periodically, this means until further notice the following for Cublington Cricket Club and our members:

- winter nets have been cancelled; - no outdoor training will take place; - all junior cricket is postponed - this includes training, leagues, All Stars and Dynamo junior cricket festivals; - all senior cricket (men and ladies) is postponed - this includes CCC's participation in the FCCL league, Bucks competitions and Sunday cricket.

Groundforce Day on 4th April will still take place. Cublington Cricket Club members and friends are invited to come to the ground where we will do some preparation for a cricket season which may commence later in the summer? CCC will continue, at our cost, to cut the grass for the entire Orchard ground, enhance the overall space and maintain the cricket square to a minimum level allowing a ramp up if cricket is played at some stage. We will set up the outdoor nets to allow individuals use of the facility on the assumption that social distancing guidelines are followed. This situation will place a great financial strain on the Cricket Club - with membership subscriptions not being collected and with no match fees being paid. This has a direct affect on the Orchard Ground Committee, to whom the Cricket Club pay annual rental for use of the ground and facilities. If cricket is played later in the summer, membership subscription arrangements will be introduced to reflect a shorter season. However, we will survive. Sport plays an absolutely vital role in the nation’s mental and physical wellbeing, and it helps people find meaning where there is fear and uncertainty, so one of our goals in the coming weeks will be to explore ways that we can support some levels of physical activity in Cublington - particularly at junior level, during what could be a long and difficult summer. Yours sincerely Michael Reilly Chairman Cublington Cricket Club

16th Cublington Horticultural Show 2020 It looks like with us all in “lock down” we will be able to spend much more time in the garden and on the allotments so there’s absolutely no excuse not to be entering into the 16th fun Village Horticultural Show! It does not seem appropriate to be asking for sponsorship from businesses at this difficult time so we will not be doing this. All money raised does go towards the upkeep of our lovely church so if there are any villagers or families who would like to personally sponsor a category (£10, £20 or £30 - whatever you can afford) that would be absolutely fantastic! Here are all the categories so you can all start planning, practising and growing. Thank you.

Your council is changing

On 1 April your council will change. The new Buckinghamshire Council will replace all five of the district and county councils in Buckinghamshire, and over the coming weeks and months you’ll start to see some changes as you come across the new look council. What does the new council mean for me? • Th e same services, better together. For most people there will be no change to the day-to-day services you use. This includes bin collections, looking after our elderly and young people, libraries and parking. The focus for the future will be on improving these services as a new council together. • O ne council. Getting in touch with the council will be simpler because you’ll only need to contact one council for all the services currently provided by the county and district councils. •F ace-to-face advice, support and information from your council through a network of 17 local Council Access Points based at the heart of your local community – in current council offices and libraries across the county. The five council offices in Aylesbury (Walton Street and The Gateway), High Wycombe, Amersham and Denham will be ‘access plus’ points, geared up to handle more complex enquiries. • S tronger links with local communities. Buckinghamshire Council councillors will work closely with local people and community organisations to understand and respond to the key issues affecting their local area through 16 Community Boards. Who will be my local councillor on the new council? There will be 147 councillors elected to Buckinghamshire Council. Elections for the new council will take place on 7 May 2020. Until these newly elected councillors take up their posts, your current elected members from the five existing councils will continue to serve your communities. How can I find out more? For regular news and updates, follow us on Twitter and Facebook @BucksCouncil or find out more on our website at www.buckinghamshire.gov.uk.

Make your own houmous - so simple and cheap! Harissa spiked houmous

Serves 4-6 Homemade houmous is so easy to make and is much lower in fat than the shop-bought version-(7g fat, 111 kcals) 1 x 400g can chickpeas, rinsed and drained 2-3 tablespoons olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed Lemon juice , to taste 1-tablespoon harissa paste (if possible try and get the Belazu Rose harissa in a jar, it is milder than some of the other brands) 1-tablespoon tomato puree •P ut ¾ of the chickpeas in a food processor with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, garlic and half a cup of water •B litz until smooth, adding a little more water if necessary to make a thick cream consistency •A dd the rest of the chickpeas, then whizz again for a few seconds but don’t break them down completely • Season with salt and a good squeeze of lemon juice • Mix together the harissa and tomato puree with the rest of the olive oil • Drizzle over the houmous to serve with pitta chips

Pitta chips

Barn Owl update...

We have had news that one of the chicks that fledged last year was killed on the road, up near Lillingstone Lovell, in February, sad loss, but shows how far they have moved out of the area. On a brighter note, we saw one of the adults hunting over our marsh, a few days ago. Jane A

Nutty oat shortbread (cuts into 8 slices)

These are absolutely delicious!

50g plain flour 50g rolled porridge oats 75g butter (block butter cold from the fridge) 35g light brown muscovado sugar 25g of either chopped roasted hazelnuts ( you can buy these in a packet) or 25g desiccated coconut or add in anything you like... dried fruit, berries, different nuts, golden syrup. Experiment - it’s fun and nutritious. · · · · · · · · ·

Place the flour, oats and sugar in to a bowl Cut the butter up into small pieces and add to the flour Rub the butter into the flour mixture till it resembles breadcrumbs Add the nuts or coconut and mix in well Tip the mixture into a round 16 cm shallow tin (something like a sponge cake tin works well) Use your fingers to press into an even, compact layer Prick it all over with a fork Bake for about 25/30 minutes until golden brown in a 180 c oven. Cut into fingers when it comes out of the oven and then allow to cool in the tin.

Plantar fascial pain Plantar fascial pain affects around 1 in 10 people in the UK and is pain running along the sole of the foot or from the underside of the heel bone (calcaneus). It is most common between the ages of 40 and 60 and affects twice as many women as men. If symptoms persist for more than 4-6 weeks, you should consider seeing a physiotherapist for a more comprehensive assessment to get to the root of your problem. A Podiatrist opinion and assessment of your foot posture on whether you would benefit from orthotic innersoles may also be beneficial. Here are some simple tips that might help to manage plantar fascial pain: Avoid walking, running or high impact exercise - focus on lower impact alternatives such as cycling, cross training or swimming. Calf exercises and stretches/massage are important - a stronger calf muscle will help to offload the plantar fascia. Reducing calf tension from the calf muscle with stretching or self-massage (using a foam roller or tennis ball) will reduce the strain from the Achilles tendon into the plantar fascia. Taping and compression can be useful - a Strassburg sock night time splint or taping of the plantar fascia can reduce symptoms and allow you to exercise more. Gel heel supports - can help cushion or reduce the shock from walking by reducing the forces transmitted through the heel of your foot. St Judes have an experienced team of Physiotherapists and Podiatrists and are located near Morrison’s.
