Joyce & Vernon Haan Joyce and Vernon Haan of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin will celebrate their sixty-third wedding anniversary on the second of September and they have spent most of that time together satisfying their passion for collecting. It's serendipitous that just eleven days later on September 13th, the Haan family will commemorate the occasion again when Garth’s sells the Haan 40 Year Collection of Glass and Ceramics in a live online, virtual auction.

Originally from Grand Rapids, MI, the Haans were first relocated to Baltimore, MD, where Vernon graduated from Baltimore University, summa cum laude, with a degree in transportation. Vernon went on to teach transportation at the University and also began working for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. It was in Baltimore that the couple began visiting the cities home & garden tours over the weekends and quickly fell in love with the Colonial period. The pair first started collecting glass and quickly expanded their collecting to included English pottery and porcelain. The real collecting bug bit when they purchased a piece of blue historical Staffordshire for $8.00. They had no idea what is was but after doing a little research they realized.

Vernon went on to work for Martin Marietta for a time and eventually transferred to International Minerals & Chemicals where he worked until his retirement in 1990. This position moved their family, which now included three sons, to Lake Bluff, Ill. The large family moved into and restored a wonderful home built in 1848 in Lake Bluff’s historic district.

In 1976, the couple purchased a second home on Mackinac Island, located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. On a trip to Britain to visit the pottery mills of England, the couple choose to stay in several B&Bs’ over the course of their vacation. The Haan's realized on this trip that their beloved Mackinac home would make an ideal bed and breakfast.

Now known as the Haan's 1830 Inn, the Inn is the oldest Greek Revival in the Northwest and was once the private residence of Colonel Preston, one of the last officers at Fort Mackinac and first mayor of the island at the turn of the century. The Inn has been completely restored and invites guests year round to enjoy the island.

The Haan Collection is comprised of over 200 lots of Gaudy Welsh, Gaudy pearlware, English transferware, early American blown lamps, fluid and whale oil pressed and pattern glass lamps, pattern glass candlesticks, Sandwich glass lamps, Bohemian glass, lacy glass cup plates & dishes, Rockingham, Bennington pottery, yellowware, redware, stoneware ink bottles, Bargeware, Pittsburgh tumblers and tasters, and more.

While the dispersal of a beloved collection is always a tough process, Joyce Haan stated “We knew we could trust Garth’s to sell our treasured collection.” Garth’s is honored to offer this fine collection on behalf of the Haan family.
